Improved catalytic performance in gas-phase dimethyl ether carbonylation over facile NH4F etched ferrierite

Gas-phase dimethyl ether (DME) carbonylation to methyl acetate (MA) initiates a promising route for producing ethanol from syngas. Ferrierite (FER, ZSM-35) has received considerable attention as it displays excellent stability in the carbonylation reaction and its modification strategy is to improve its catalytic activity on the premise of maintaining its stability as much as possible. However, conventional post-treatment methods such as dealumination and desilication usually selectively remove framework Al or Si atoms, ultimately altering the intrinsic composition, crystallinity, and acidity of zeolites inevitably. In this study, we successfully prepared a series of hierarchical ZSM-35 materials through post-treatment with NH4F etching, which dissolved framework Al and Si at similar rates and preferentially attacked the defective sites. Interestingly, the produced pore systems effectively penetrated the [100] plane, offering elevated access to both the 8-membered ring (8-MR) and 10-membered ring (10-MR) channels. The physicochemical and acid properties of the pristine and NH4F etched ZSM-35 samples were comprehensively characterized using various techniques, including XRD, XRF, FESEM, HRTEM, Nitrogen adsorption-desorption, NH3-TPD, Py-IR, 27Al MAS NMR, and 29Si MAS NMR. Under moderate treatment conditions, the intrinsic microporous structure, acid properties, and crystallinity of zeolite were retained, leading to superior catalytic activity and stability with respect to the pristine sample. Nonetheless, severe NH4F etching disrupted the crystalline framework and created additional defective sites, bringing about faster deposition of coke precursors on the interior Brønsted acid sites (BAS) and decreased catalytic performance. This technique provides a novel and efficient method to slightly enhance the micropore and mesopore volume of industrially pertinent zeolites through a straightforward post-treatment, thus elevating the catalytic performance of these zeolites.

Template-induced Al distribution in MOR and enhanced activity in dimethyl ether carbonylation

As the activity of dimethyl ether (DME) carbonylation over mordenite proportionally correlates with the Brønsted acid sites (BAS) in 8-membered ring (8-MR), enhancing the concentration of BAS in the 8-MR of MOR is important to improve the efficiency of the reaction. Herein, we report that the distribution of the BAS in the zeolite catalyst H-MOR can be altered by the synthesis of H-MOR with different cyclic amine structure-directing templates, several of which have not been reported previously for MOR synthesis. By combining FTIR, ICP, TG analysis and DFT calculations, it is verified that the strength of the interaction between amine or sodium cations and [AlO₄]^- in the zeolite framework plays a decisive role in Al distribution, owing to the competitive effect between Na⁺ and the cyclic amine compensating negative charges from the framework [AlO₄]^-. Quantitative analysis of the BAS in the 12-MR and 8-MR identifies the optimum template for maximizing the BAS in the 8-MR. It is shown that the enhanced activity of the H-MOR for the DME carbonylation to methyl acetate correlates with the increase in the BAS in the 8-MR. Our finding thus provides a facile strategy to direct Al location within different channels of the zeolite, which must benefit spatially confined reaction systems.

Single-pass transformation of syngas into ethanol with high selectivity by triple tandem catalysis

Synthesis of ethanol from non-petroleum carbon resources via syngas (a mixture of H₂ and CO) is an important but challenging research target. The current conversion of syngas to ethanol suffers from low selectivity or multiple processes with high energy consumption. Here, we report a high-selective conversion of syngas into ethanol by a triple tandem catalysis. An efficient trifunctional tandem system composed of potassium-modified ZnO–ZrO₂, modified zeolite mordenite and Pt–Sn/SiC working compatibly in syngas stream in one reactor can afford ethanol with a selectivity of 90%. We demonstrate that the K⁺–ZnO–ZrO₂ catalyses syngas conversion to methanol and the mordenite with eight-membered ring channels functions for methanol carbonylation to acetic acid, which is then hydrogenated to ethanol over the Pt–Sn/SiC catalyst. The present work offers an effective methodology leading to high selective conversion by decoupling a single-catalyst-based complicated and uncontrollable reaction into well-controlled multi-steps in tandem in one reactor.
