A direct Z-scheme mechanism for selective hydrogenation of aromatic nitro compounds over a hybrid photocatalyst composed of ZnIn2S4 and WO3 nanorods

A direct Z-scheme mechanism photocatalyst constructed from ZnIn₂S₄ and WO₃ is a versatile photoredox platform for selective hydrogenation and environmental remediation.

Photodecomposition of ibuprofen over g-C3N4/Bi2WO6/rGO heterostructured composites under visible/solar light

A microwave-assisted hydrothermal preparation of heterostructured graphitic carbon nitride/bismuth tungsten oxide/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposites (denoted as GBR-T, T = microwave irradiation time) is performed. The prepared GBR-T photocatalysts are identified by employing X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms. The photocatalytic performance of these GBR-T is evaluated by the photocatalytic degradation of ibuprofen (IBP) under the visible light (λ > 420 nm) and solar light irradiation. Among all prepared photocatalysts, ca. 93% of IBP photodegradation can be achieved with a degradation rate constant (k) of 0.011 min^-1 under visible-light irradiation upon the optimal microwave-assisted reaction time of 60 min. The improvement is primarily attributable to the higher crystallization degree, specific surface area and increased charge transfer efficiency as verified by XRD, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms and TRPL, respectively. The photocatalytic performance of this catalyst is further enhanced in the photodecomposition of IBP (ca. 98.6%) under sun light irradiation. The electron spin resonance (ESR) and liquid chromatography-mass/mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) studies show that the superoxide radicals and hydroxyl radicals are the dominant active species in the photocomposition of IBP and degradation intermediates are formed through three probable photodegradation pathways. This investigation provides a simple way to prepare triple 2D heterojuction photocatalysts which could be effectively used in the advanced oxidation process for removal of emerging contaminants in wastewater by using renewable energy.

Highly Selective Detection of Metronidazole by Self-Assembly via 0D/2D N-C QDs/g-C3N4 Nanocomposites Through FRET Mechanism

A 0D/2D (0-dimensional/2-dimensional) nanostructure was designed by self-assembly of N-C QDs and carboxylated g-C3N4 nanosheets and used as a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) fluorescent sensor. The N-C QDs/g-C3N4 nanosheets were synthesized via the amino group on the N-C QD surface and the -COOH of the carboxylated g-C3N4 nanosheets. The mechanism of detection of metronidazole (MNZ) by N-C QDs/g-C3N4 nanocomposites is based on FRET between negatively charged N-QDs and positively charged carboxylated g-C3N4 nanoparticles. N-C QDs/g-C3N4 nanostructures displayed good responses for the detection of MNZ at normal temperature and pressure. The decrease in the fluorescence intensity showed a good linear relationship to MNZ concentration within 0-2.6 × 10-5 mol/L, and the detection limit was 0.66 μM. The novel FRET sensor will have a great potential in clinical analysis and biological studies.

Embedded carbon in a carbon nitride hollow sphere for enhanced charge separation and photocatalytic water splitting

Surface modification and morphological engineering are two important approaches to improve photocatalysis through enhancing photoabsorption and retarding charge recombination. Herein, a graphitic carbon integrated graphitic carbon nitride (C3N4) hollow sphere has been prepared via the modified shape-selective templating method in order to enchance light absorption and promote charge seperation under visible-light irradiation. MCM-41 that underwent carbonization at different temperatures in an inert atmosphere but not the conventional soft-template elimination was utilized as the sacrificial template. The resultant materials achieved an excellent photocatalytic performance with their hydrogen evolution rate reaching 718.1 μmol g-1 h-1, approximately 15 times higher than that of the bulk graphitic C3N4, resulting in 1.54% apparent quantum yield at 420 nm. The efficient photocatalysis was mainly attributed to the synergy of the vesicle morphology and carbon modification. The advantageous vesicle structure enhanced photoabsorption via the light scattering effect, while further carbon modification provided an efficient pathway to promote charge speration and transfer, which demonstrated that the carbon derived from the organic template residues (hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide) was a facile yet effective medium to optimize the photocatalysis of C3N4.

Nanoscale Photoinduced Charge Transfer with Individual Quantum Dots: Tunability through Synthesis, Interface Design, and Interaction with Charge Traps

Semiconducting colloidal quantum dots (QDs) provide an excellent platform for nanoscale charge-transfer studies. Because of their size-dependent optoelectronic properties, which can be tuned via chemical synthesis and of their versatility in surface ligand exchange, QDs can be coupled with various types of acceptors to create hybrids with controlled type (electron or hole), direction, and rate of charge flow, depending on the foreseen application, either solar harvesting, light emitting, or biosensing. This perspective highlights several examples of QD-based hybrids with controllable (tunable) rate of charge transfer obtained by various approaches, including by changing the QD core size and shell thickness by colloidal synthesis, by the insertion of molecular linkers or dielectric spacers between donor and acceptor components. We also show that subjecting QDs to external factors such as electric fields and alternate optical excitation energy is another approach to bias the internal charge transfer between charges photogenerated in the QD core and QD's surface charge traps. The perspective also provides the reader with various examples of how single nanoparticle spectroscopic studies can help in understanding and quantifying nanoscale charge transfer with QDs.
