Push-pull D-π-Ru-π-A chromophores: synthesis and electrochemical, photophysical and second-order nonlinear optical properties

Synthesis and luminescent properties of a linear difluorene pyrazine (D-A-D) derivative as a selective indicator for a reversible acid-base vapour sensor

We have synthesized a structure in which pyrazine is the core structure and fluorene derivatives are attached to both sides. Photo physical investigations such as aprotic solvents (Hexane to DMF) were carried out. A redshift was revealed from non-polar aprotic solvents to polar aprotic solvents. The luminescence intensity was gradually decreased, which is incredibly more complex towards changes in the solvent polarization than their UV/Vis absorption spectra. The compound showed a redshift from 445 nm to 473 nm when slowly increasing the water fraction (fw) from 0 to 30 %. Also, rising water fraction (fw > 40-90 %) effectively attenuated the instantaneous emission intensity was observed. At the same time, the intensity of the emission peak was reduced due to the TICT effect on fluorene and pyrazine rings due to enhanced solvent polarity. In addition, optically reversible acidofluorochromic properties were performed experimentally in both solvent and solid phases. For the acidic substances TFA and HF, which contain fluorine, new redshift peaks from 425 nm and 503 nm were observed upon reaction with the PDF solution, and the emission intensity was extinguished by more than 90 % and 60 %, respectively. Upon addition of TFA up to 1500 equal, the PDF mixture suffered from 50 % lower energy absorption intensity. The 1H NMR spectrum confirmed the proposed mechanism (TFA/TEA, ON-OFF-ON). Therefore, the present work presents a novel approach to fabricating ON-OFF-ON active-pull pyrazine scaffolds that can be used in DSEgens, referred to as "ON-OFF-ON" fluorescent sensors, for multifunctional applications.

Styrylpyrimidine chromophores with bulky electron-donating substituents: experimental and theoretical investigation

Styrylpyrimidines with bulky 9,9-dimethylacridan, phenoxazine and phenothiazine electron-donating fragments were designed. Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) properties were expected for these structures. These chromophores exhibit peculiar emission properties. For 9,9-dimethylacridan and phenoxazine derivatives, a single emission highly sensitive to the polarity is observed in solution whereas for phenothiazine derivative a dual emission is observed in solution and is attributed to the coexistence of quasi-axial (Qax) and quasi-equatorial (Qeq) conformers. This study intends to understand through theoretical and experimental works, why the studied chromophores do not exhibit TADF properties, contrary to what was expected. The absence of phosphorescence both at room temperature and 77 K tends to indicate the impossibility to harvest triplet states in these systems. Wave-function based calculations show that for both conformers of the three chromophores the S1-T1 splitting is significantly larger than 0.2 eV. The second triplet state T2 of Qeq conformers is found very close in energy to the singlet S1 state, but S1 and T2 states possess similar charge transfer characters. This prevents efficient spin-orbit coupling between the states, which is consistent with the absence of TADF.

Electric-field induced second harmonic generation responses of push-pull polyenic dyes: experimental and theoretical characterizations

The second-order nonlinear optical properties of four series of amphiphilic cationic chromophores involving different push-pull extremities and increasingly large polyenic bridges have been investigated both experimentally, by means of electric field induced second harmonic (EFISH) generation, and theoretically, using a computational approach combining classical molecular dynamics (MD) and quantum chemical (QM) calculations. This theoretical methodology allows to describe the effects of structural fluctuations on the EFISH properties of the complexes formed by the dye and its iodine counterion, and provides a rationale to EFISH measurements. The good agreement between experimental and theoretical results proves that this MD + QM scheme constitutes a useful tool for a rational, computer-aided, design of SHG dyes.

Homoleptic Alkynylphosphonium Au(I) Complexes as Push-Pull Phosphorescent Emitters

A series of compounds P1-P4 bearing terminal alkynyl sites connected with a phosphonium group via different π-conjugated linkers have been synthesized. The compounds themselves are efficient push-pull emitters and exhibit bright fluorescence in blue and near-UV regions. P1-P4 were used as alkynyl ligands to obtain a series of homoleptic bis-alkynyl Au(I) complexes 1-4. The complexes demonstrate bright phosphorescence and dual emission with dominating phosphorescence (2-4). Terphenyl derivative complex 3 exhibits warm white emission in DMSO solution and pure white emission in PMMA films. Time-dependent density functional theory calculations have shown that the T₁ excited state has a hybrid MLCT/ILCT nature with a dominant contribution of charge transfer across a ligand-centered "D-π-A" system. The variation of linker allows tuning the effect of intermolecular charge transfer and thus changing the electronic and photophysical properties of the organogold "D-π-A" system. The results presented unambiguously display the advances of the conception of organometallic "D-π-A" construction.

The arylvinylpyrimidine scaffold: a tunable platform for luminescent and optical materials

The incorporation of electron-withdrawing pyrimidine rings within π-extended systems allows access to a wide variety of fluorescent push-pull molecules that display emission properties highly sensitive to external stimuli. A suitable design of these compounds leads to interesting materials for a variety of optoelectronic applications. In this context, a vast number of arylvinylpyrimidine-based chromophores have been extensively studied during the last two decades. Along with the main synthetic pathways, this review summarizes the photophysical features of these active compounds having great potential and their most important applications as sensors and luminescence materials.

Investigation of the corrosion inhibition potentials of some 2-(4-(substituted)arylidene)-1H-indene-1,3-dione derivatives: density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulation

Background

Corrosion is a threat to material strength and durability. Electron-rich organic inhibitor may offer good corrosion mitigation potentials. In this work, anti-corrosion potentials of nine derivatives of 1H-indene-1,3-dione have been investigated using density functional theory (DFT) approach and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. Chemical reactivity descriptors like energies of lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (ELUMO), highest occupied molecular orbital (EHOMO), electron affinity (A), ionization potential (I), energy gap (ΔEgap), global hardness (η), global softness (σ), electronegativity (χ), electrophilicity (ω), number of transferred electrons (ΔN) and back-donation (ΔEback-donation) were computed at DFT/B3LYP/6-31G(d) theoretical level. The local reactive sites and the charge partitioning on the compounds were studied using Fukui indices and molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) surface analysis. The adsorption behavior and the binding energy of the inhibitors on Fe (110) surface in hydrochloric acid solution were investigated using MD simulation.

Results

The high chemical reactivity, kinetic instability and good corrosion inhibition potentials demonstrated by the inhibitors are rationalized based on their high EHOMO, A, σ, ΔN, ΔEback-donation, and low ΔEgap, ELUMO, I and η. A wide difference of approximately 2.4–3.2 eV between the electronegativities of iron and the 1H-inden-1,3-diones suggests good charge transfer tendency from the latter to the low-lying vacant d-orbitals of iron. The heteroatoms (O and N) and the aromatic moieties are the nucleophilic sites on the inhibitors for effective adsorption on the metal surface as shown by condensed Fukui dual functions and MEP analysis. The MD simulation shows good interaction and strong binding energy between the inhibitor and Fe (110) surface.

Conclusions

Effective surface coverage and displacement of H3O+, Cl− and water molecules from Fe (110) surface by the inhibitors indicate good corrosion inhibition properties of the inden-1,3-diones. 2-((4,7-dimethylnaphthalen-1-yl)methylene)-1H-indene-1,3(2H)-dione display low energy gap, strongest binding interaction and most stabilized iron-inhibitor configuration, hence, the best anti-corrosion potential.

V-Shaped Methylpyrimidinium Chromophores for Nonlinear Optics

A series of four V-shaped methylpyrimidinium salts bearing diphenylamino-electron-donating groups appended at various pyrimidine positions were designed. These chromophores were obtained by regioselective N(1) monomethylation by methyl methanesulfonate of the pyrimidine core. Linear optical properties were studied experimentally and electronic properties were further completed by (TD)-DFT calculations. The second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties were also studied using electric field induced second harmonic generation (EFISH) method in chloroform, and all pyrimidinium salts exhibited μβ₀ >1000×10^-48  esu. The 2,4-disubstituted pyrimidinium core is preferred over 4,6-disubstitution as it enhances the NLO response and increases the dipole moment. (E,E)-2,4-Bis[4-(diphenylamino)styryl]-1-methylpyrimidin-1-ium methanesulfonate appears to be the best NLO-phore in chloroform in the series (μβ₀ =2500×10^-48  esu) and a figure of merit μβ₀ /MW=3.4 10^-48  esu mol g^-1 .

Investigation of second-order nonlinear optical responses in a series of V-shaped binuclear platinum(ii) complexes

A series of four D-(π-Pt-π-A)₂ new V-shaped binuclear platinum(ii) complexes bearing a diphenylpyranylidene ligand as a pro-aromatic donor group (D) and various electron-attracting groups (A) separated by platinum bis-acetylide fragments have been synthesized, characterized and studied for their electrochemical, photophysical and second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. The nonlinear optical properties of these complexes have been determined by using the Electric-Field-Induced Second Harmonic (EFISH) generation technique, and their optical properties have been rationalized by Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) calculations relying on a range-separated hybrid. All complexes display positive μβ₀ values. In addition, the second-order NLO responses of the complexes could be easily modulated by incorporating various end-capped electron-attracting groups, namely malononitrile, indane-1,3-dione, pyrimidine and pyrimidinium. Remarkably, complex 7 bearing a pyrimidinium fragment displays the highest μβ₀ value among all the complexes of this series. Its NLO response is twice as high as that of the mononuclear analogue complex RD2, which has been confirmed both experimentally and theoretically.

Twisted One-Dimensional Charge Transfer and Related Y-Shaped Chromophores with a 4H-Pyranylidene Donor: Synthesis and Optical Properties

Three series of push–pull derivatives bearing 4H-pyranylidene as electron donor group and a variety of acceptors were designed. On one hand, one-dimensional chromophores with a thiophene ring (series 1H) or 5-dimethylaminothiophene moiety (series 1N) as an auxiliary donor, non-coplanar with the π-conjugated system, were synthesized. On the other hand, related two-dimensional (2D) Y-shaped chromophores (series 2) were also prepared to compare how the diverse architectures affect the electrochemical, linear, and second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. The presence of the 5-dimethylaminothiophene moiety in the exocyclic C=C bond of the pyranylidene unit gives rise to oxidation potentials rarely low, and the protonation (with an excess of trifluoroacetic acid) of its derivatives results in the apparition of a new blue-shifted band in the UV–visible spectra. The analysis of the properties of derivatives with and without the additional thiophene ring shows that this auxiliary donor leads to a higher NLO response, accompanied by an enhanced transparency. Y-shaped chromophores of series 2 present a blue-shifted absorption, higher molar extinction coefficients, and higher E_ox values compared to their linear twisted counterparts. As concerns NLO properties, 2D Y-shaped architecture gives rise to somewhat lower μβ values (except for thiobarbiturate derivatives).

Cyclometalated Ir(III) Complexes with Curcuminoid Ligands as Active Second-Order NLO Chromophores and Building Blocks for SHG Polymeric Films

The second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of iridium(III) complexes having two cyclometalated 2-phenylpyridines and curcumin or tetrahydrocurcumin as ancillary ligand have been investigated both in solution and as guest in a polymeric organic matrix. In solution, these complexes are characterized by a significant second-order NLO response, as determined by the Electric Field Induced Second Harmonic (EFISH) technique, like the related complex with acetylacetonate. Whereas the low second-harmonic generation response of a composite film of [Ir(2-phenylpyridine)2(acetylacetonate)] in polymethyl methacrylate was not stable and fell down to zero upon turning off the electric field. A good and stable response was obtained with a film based on the iridium(III) complex bearing two cyclometalated 2-phenylpyridines and curcumin.

Theoretical study on functionalized acrylonitrile compounds with a large second-order nonlinear optical response

The nonlinear optical properties of the studied compounds were studied with the help of DFT calculations.

Impact of the Subunit Arrangement on the Nonlinear Absorption Properties of Organometallic Complexes with Ruthenium(II) σ-Acetylide and Benzothiadiazole as Building Units §

In this paper, the nonlinear absorption properties of two complexes consisting of Ru(C≡CPh)(C≡C)(dppe)2 (dppe = Ph2PCH2CH2PPh2) as electron donor (D) and 4,7-di(2-thienyl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole as electron acceptor (A) units in two different arrangement, i.e., A–D–A and D–A–D, are presented. They were measured in solution by the femtosecond open-aperture Z-scan method. The complexes show moderate two-photon absorption cross-sections σ(2) of several hundred to one thousand GM (here 1 GM = 10−50 cm4 s molecule−1 photon−1). Although they are formed by the same building units, it was found that the two-photon absorption values of the D–A–D arrangement are six times higher than that of the A–D–A one. This difference can be explained by the number of metal cores (one or two ruthenium centers), the geometrical configurations of the complexes (more or less planar), and the resonance enhancement by lowering the intermediate state.

A mononuclear cobalt(II) salophen-type complex: Synthesis, theoretical and experimental electronic absorption and infrared spectra, crystal structure, and predicting of second- and third-order nonlinear optical properties

A tetradentate Schiff base ligand, (4-nitro-N,N'-o-phenylene-bis(5-methoxysalicylideneimine)) (H₂L), and its cobalt(II) complex (CoL•DMF) were synthesized. Elemental analysis, and FT-IR and ¹H NMR spectra were used to confirm the molecular structure of H₂L ligand. In addition, elemental analysis, molar conductance measurement, infrared and electronic absorption spectroscopies as well as single crystal X-ray diffraction were employed to distinguish the molecular structure of the complex that has a slightly distorted square-planar geometry around the cobalt(II) ion. The geometries of H₂L and CoL were optimized by means of the DFT/(U)PBE0/Def2-TZVP level of theory. Good agreement of the optimized geometric parameters of the complex with the corresponding experimental ones and successfully reproduction of the FT-IR spectra of the ligand and complex validated the applied method. Based on the optimized structure of CoL, its electronic absorption spectrum was reproduced by using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) at the same level. Its analysis was carried out to assign the observed electronic transitions and determine their characters. The computed nonlinear optical (NLO) parameters (β, γ and < γ > values) of H₂L and CoL by using TDDFT at the same level combined with the sum-over-states (SOS) method are considerable larger values than reference compound i.e. urea. The ligand and the complex in the absence of nitro and methoxy moieties referred to as H₂L' and CoL' respectively were optimized to elucidate the effect of these moieties on hyperpolarizabilities values.

Carbazole- and Triphenylamine-Substituted Pyrimidines: Synthesis and Photophysical Properties

A series of pyrimidine derivatives bearing one, two or three triphenylamine/9-ethylcarbazole substituents has been synthesized by Suzuki cross-coupling reaction. All compounds showed absorption bands in the UV region and the emission of violet-blue light upon irradiation. Protonation led to quenching of the fluorescence, although some derivatives remained luminescent with the appearance of a new red-shifted band in the spectra. Accurate control of the amount of acid enabled white photoluminescence to be obtained both in solution and in solid state.

Push-Pull Chromophores Based on the Naphthalene Scaffold: Potential Candidates for Optoelectronic Applications

A series of ten push-pull chromophores comprising 1H-cyclopenta[b]naphthalene-1,3(2H)-dione as the electron-withdrawing group have been designed, synthesized, and characterized by UV-visible absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and theoretical calculations. The solvatochromic behavior of the different dyes has been examined in 23 solvents and a positive solvatochromism has been found for all dyes using the Kamlet-Taft solvatochromic relationship, demonstrating the polar form to be stabilized in polar solvents. To establish the interest of this polyaromatic electron acceptor only synthesizable in a multistep procedure, a comparison with the analog series based on the benchmark indane-1,3-dione (1H-indene-1,3(2H)-dione) has been done. A significant red-shift of the intramolecular charge transfer band has been found for all dyes, at a comparable electron-donating group. Parallel to the examination of the photophysical properties of the different chromophores, a major improvement of the synthetic procedure giving access to 1H-cyclopenta[b]naphthalene-1,3(2H)-dione has been achieved.
