Evaluating Different TiO2 Nanoflower-Based Composites for Humidity Detection

Unique three-dimensional (3D) titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanoflowers (TFNA) have shown great potential for humidity sensing applications, due to their large surface area-to-volume ratio and high hydrophilicity. The formation of a composite with other materials could further enhance the performance of this material. In this work, the effect of different types of composites on the performance of a TNFA-based humidity sensor was examined. NiO, ZnO, rGO, and PVDF have been explored as possible composite pairing candidates with TiO₂ nanoflowers, which were prepared via a modified solution immersion method. The properties of the composites were examined using field emission electron spectroscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), current-voltage (I-V) analysis, Hall effect measurement, and contact angle measurement. The performance of the humidity sensor was assessed using a humidity sensor measurement system inside a humidity-controlled chamber. Based on the result, the combination of TiO₂ with rGO produced the highest sensor response at 39,590%. The achievement is attributed to the increase in the electrical conductivity, hydrophilicity, and specific surface area of the composite.

Critical review and recent advances of 2D materials-Based gas sensors for food spoilage detection

Many people around the world are concerned about meat safety and quality, which has resulted in the ongoing advancement of packaged food technology. Since the emergence of graphene in 2004, the number of studies on layered two-dimensional materials (2DMs) for applications ranging from food packaging to meat quality monitoring has been expanding quickly. Recently, scientists have been working hard to develop a novel class of 2DMs that keep the good things about graphene but don't have zero bandgaps at room temperature. Much work has been done on layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) like different metal sulfides and selenides for meat spoilage gas sensors. This review looks at (i) the main indicators of meat spoilage and (ii) the detection methods that can be used to find out if meat has been spoiled, such as chemiresistive, electrochemical, and optical methods. (iii) the role of 2DMs in meat spoilage detection and (iv) the emergence of advanced methods for selective classification of target analytes in meat/food spoilage detection in recent years. Thus, this review demonstrates the potential scope of 2DMs for developing intelligent sensor systems for food and meat spoilage detection with high viability, simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and other multipurpose tools.

Development of optical sensor for water in acetonitrile based on propeller-structured BODIPY-type pyridine-boron trifluoride complex

A propeller-structured 3,5,8-trithienyl-BODIPY-type pyridine–boron trifluoride complex, ST-3-BF₃, which has three units of 2-(pyridin-4-yl)-3-(thiophen-2-yl)acrylonitrile at the 3-, 5-, and 8-positions on the BODIPY skeleton, was designed and developed as an intramolecular charge transfer (ICT)-type optical sensor for the detection of a trace amount of water in acetonitrile. The characterization of ST-3-BF₃ was successfully determined by FTIR, ¹H and ¹¹B NMR measurements, high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) analysis, thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), photoabsorption and fluorescence spectral measurements, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. ST-3-BF₃ showed a broad photoabsorption band in the range of 600 to 800 nm, which is assigned to the S₀ → S₁ transition of the BODIPY skeleton with the expanded π-conjugated system over the 2-(pyridin-4-yl)-3-(thiophen-2-yl)acrylonitrile units at the 3-, 5-, and 8-positions onto the BODIPY core. In addition, a photoabsorption band was also observed in the range of 300 to 550 nm, which can be assigned to the ICT band between the 2-(pyridin-4-yl)-3-(thiophen-2-yl)acrylonitrile units at 3-, 5-, and 8-positions and the BODIPY core. ST-3-BF₃ exhibited a characteristic fluorescence band originating from the BODIPY skeleton at around 730 nm. It was found that by addition of a trace amount of water to the acetonitrile solution of ST-3-BF₃, the photoabsorption band at around 415 nm and the fluorescence band at around 730 nm increased linearly as a function of the water content below only 0.2 wt%, which could be ascribed to the change in the ICT characteristics due to the dissociation of ST-3-BF₃ into ST-3 by water molecules. Thus, this work demonstrated that the 3,5,8-trithienyl-BODIPY-type pyridine–boron trifluoride complex can act as a highly-sensitive optical sensor for the detection of a trace amount of water in acetonitrile.

Colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescence sensing of water based on 9-methyl pyrido[3,4-b]indole-boron trifluoride complex

In this work, 9-methyl pyrido[3,4-b]indole-boron trifluoride complex, 9-MP-BF3, was designed and developed as a colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent sensor for the detection of water in the low- and high-water-content regions in solvents. In the low-water-content region, a new photoabsorption band at around 360 nm and a fluorescence band at around 370 nm gradually appeared due to the dissociation of 9-MP-BF3 into 9-methyl pyrido[3,4-b]indole (9-MP) by water molecules with a simultaneous decrease in the photoabsorption band at around 390 nm and the fluorescence band at around 460 nm originating from 9-MP-BF3. In the moderate-water-content region, the photoabsorption band at around 360 nm and the fluorescence band at around 370 nm gradually shifted to a longer wavelength region with an increase in the fluorescence intensity, which could be ascribed to the formation of a hydrogen-bonded complex (9-MP-H2O) with water molecules. Furthermore, in the high-water-content region, two photoabsorption bands at around 305 nm and 390 nm and one fluorescence band at around 460 nm gradually reappeared with simultaneous decrease in the photoabsorption band at around 290 nm and the fluorescence band at around 370 nm, which was attributed to the formation of a hydrogen-bonded proton transfer complex (9-MP-H+) with water molecules. Thus, this work revealed the mechanism of a colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent sensor based on pyrido[3,4-b]indole-boron trifluoride complex for the detection of water over a wide range from low water content to high water content in solvents.

Ultrafast removal of arsenic using solid solution of aero-gel based Ce1-XTixO2-Y oxide nanoparticles

An aero-gel based solid solution of titanium and cerium oxide nanoparticles have been used for the first time for ultra fast and trace level removal of arsenic from water. The interconnected long range ordered mesoporous structure was observed from TEM analysis which has been verified as an essential facet for the fast removal of arsenic in this study. The HR-XRD spectra indicated the face centred cubic structure with Fm3¯m space group. Le-Bail refinement and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the formation of single phase solid solution of Ce_1-XTi_xO_2-Y oxide nanoparticles. The HR-XPS and FT-IR study indicated the surface complexation and partial oxidation of As(III) to As(V) via electron transfer mechanism by reduction of Ce(IV) to Ce(III) and Ti(IV) to Ti(III) simultaneously during adsorption process. The kinetics study demonstrated 99% removal of As(III) within 10 min of initiating the adsorption process. The effect of pH and interfering ions confirmed the wide range of applicability for solid solution of titania and cerium oxide nanoparticles over the different environmental conditions for the removal of arsenic. The adsorption capacity for our best adsorbent (Ce_0.8Ti_0.2O_2-y) was found to be 2 × 10⁵ mg kg^-1 while the lowest concentration of water body system was 7 μg L^-1 which is the minimum concentration of arsenic achieved by any metal oxide based adsorbent.

Au-TiO2-Loaded Cubic g-C3N4 Nanohybrids for Photocatalytic and Volatile Organic Amine Sensing Applications

A green and efficient approach for efficient nanohybrid photocatalysts in extending the light response to the visible spectrum is a hot research topic in sustainable energy technologies. In this work, novel Au-TiO₂@m-CN nanocomposite was synthesized using hard template of cubic ordered mesoporous KIT-6 via the nanocasting process. The as-prepared Au-TiO₂@m-CN nanohybrids exhibit enhanced photocatalytic activities with improved stability and reusability using methyl orange dye. The enhanced photocatalytic performance is a result of the conjugated effect of catalytic active Au and TiO₂ nanoparticles supported on highly efficient visible light sensitizer, graphitic carbon nitride (m-CN or g-C₃N₄), and ordered mesoporous morphology. Besides, the sensing performance of Au-TiO₂@m-CN nanohybrids was also tested for the detection of amine gases, wherein a significant response was reported for triethylamine at low operating temperatures. This study reveals a simple and scalable methodology to design and develop next generation of layered mesoporous materials for multifunctional applications.
