Enhancing the single-molecule magnetic performance of β-diketonate Dy(III) complexes by modulating the coordination microenvironment and magnetic interaction: from a mononuclear to a dinuclear structure

Based on a β-diketonate ligand, a mononuclear Dy(III) complex, [Dy(dmpd)3(bpy)] (1) (dmpd = 4,4-dimethyl-1-phenylpentane-1,3-dione, bpy = 2,2'-dipyridyl), of [DyN2O6] type has been synthesized with a capping nitrogen-containing coligand. Then, a dual capping coligand 2,2'-bipyrimidine (bmp) is introduced to be a bridge to link two β-diketonate-Dy(III) motifs, leading to a new dinuclear Dy(III) complex, [Dy2(dmpd)6(bmp)] (2). Dy(III) centers in both complexes feature an N2O6 octacoordinated environment with an approximate square-antiprism geometry (D4d). Without a dc field, the SMM behaviour is absent in complex 1, but can be clearly observed in dinuclear 2 with a Ueff of 87.29 K. The significantly improved magnetism arising in 2 is mainly due to the modulation of the coordination environment around the Dy(III) ions and the superexchange magnetic interactions inside the dinuclear units, thus allowing for the effective inhibition of the quantum tunneling of magnetization at low temperatures and promotion of the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. For 1, a diamagnetic Y(III) analogue [Y(dmpd)3(bpy)] (3) and diluted sample 1@Y were constructed to further perform the dilution experiment, coupled with theoretical calculations further supporting that the synergetic contributions of intermolecular dipole-dipole interactions, intramolecular coupling and uniaxial magnetic anisotropy cause the enhancement of dynamic magnetic relaxation.

Magnetic behavior and ground spin states for coordination {L·[MII(Hal)2]3}3- assemblies (Hal = Cl or I) of radical trianion hexacyanohexaazatriphenylenes (L) with three coordinated high-spin FeII (S = 2) or CoII (S = 3/2) centers

A series of trianion assemblies of hexaazatriphenylenehexacarbonitrile {HAT(CN)6} and hexaazatrinaphthylenehexacarbonitrile {HATNA(CN)6} with three Fe(II) or Co(II) ions: {cryptand(K+)}3·{HATNA(CN)6·(FeIII2)3}3-·2C6H4Cl2 (1), {cryptand(K+)}3·{HATNA(CN)6·(CoIII2)3}3-·2C6H4Cl2 (2), and (CV+)3·{HAT(CN)6·(CoIICl2)3}3-·0.5(CVCl)·2.5C6H4Cl2 (3) are synthesized (CVCl = crystal violet). Salt 1 has a χMT value of 9.80 emu K mol-1 at 300 K, indicating a contribution of three high-spin FeII (S = 2) and one S = 1/2 of HATNA(CN)6˙3-. The χMT value increases with cooling up to 12.92 emu K mol-1 at 28 K, providing a positive Weiss temperature of +20 K. Such behavior is described using a strong antiferromagnetic coupling between S = 2 and S = 1/2 with J1 = -82.1 cm-1 and a weaker FeII-FeII antiferromagnetic coupling with J2 = -7.0 cm-1. As a result, the spins of three Fe(II) ions (S = 2) align parallel to each other forming a high-spin S = 11/2 system. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations support a high-spin state of CoII (S = 3/2) for 2 and 3. However, the χMT value of 2 and 3 is 2.25 emu K mol-1 at 300 K, which is smaller than 6 emu K mol-1 calculated for the system with three independent S = 3/2 and one S = 1/2 spins. In contrast to 1, the χMT values decrease with cooling to 0.13-0.36 emu K mol-1 at 1.9 K, indicating that spins of cobalt atoms align antiparallel to each other. Data fitting using PHI software for the model consisting of three high-spin Co(II) ions and an S = 1/2 radical ligand shows very large CoII-L˙3- coupling for 2 and 3 with J1 values of -442 and -349 cm-1. The CoII-CoII coupling via the ligand (J2) is also large, being -100 and -84 cm-1, respectively, which is more than 10 times larger than that of 1. One of the reasons for the J2 increase may be the shortening of the Co-N(L) bonds in 3 and 2 to 2.02(2) and 1.993(12) Å. DFT calculations support the population of the quartet state for the Co3 system, whereas the high-spin decet (S = 9/2) state is positioned higher by 680 cm-1 and is not populated at 300 K. This is explained by the large CoII-CoII coupling. Thus, a balance between J1 and J2 couplings provides parallel or antiparallel alignment of the FeII and CoII spins, leading to high- or low-spin ground states of {L·[MII(Hal)2]3}3-.

A dinuclear Co(iii)/Co(ii) complex based on the H2pmide ligand showing field-induced SMM behaviour

We report a combined computational and experimental study of the field-induced SMM behaviour of a Co(ii)/Co(iii) dinuclear complex with a pair-like H-bond intermolecular interaction.

Doublet-Singlet-Doublet Transition in a Single Organic Molecule Magnet On-Surface Constructed with up to 3 Aluminum Atoms

Starting from a long aza-starphene neutral and nonmagnetic organic molecule, a single-molecule magnet is on-surface constructed using up to 3 light nonmagnetic aluminum (Al) atoms. Seldom observed in solution with transition-metal atoms and going from 1 to 3 Al coordinated atoms, the doublet-singlet-doublet transition is easily on-surface accessible using the scanning tunneling microscope single-atom and single-molecule manipulations on a gold(111) surface. With 3 coordinated Al atoms, the lateral vibration modes of the Al3-aza-starphene molecule magnet are largely frozen. Using the Kondo states, this opens the observation of the in-phase Al vertical atom vibrations and out-of-phase central phenyl vibrations.

Co(II)-Based single-ion magnets with 1,1'-ferrocenediyl-bis(diphenylphosphine) metalloligands

Herein, we report on investigations of magnetic and spectroscopic properties of three heterobimetallic Fe(ii)-Co(ii) coordination compounds based on the tetracoordinate {CoP2X2} core encapsulated by dppf metalloligand, where X = Cl (1), Br (2), I (3), dppf = 1,1'-ferrocenediyl -bis(diphenylphosphine). The analysis of static magnetic data has revealed the presence of axial magnetic anisotropy in compounds (1) and (2) and this was further confirmed by high-frequency electron spin resonance (HF-ESR) spectroscopy. Dynamic magnetic data confirmed that (1) and (2) behave as field-induced Single-Ion Magnets (SIMs). Together with bulk studies, we have also tested the possibility of depositing (2) as thick films on Au(111), glass, and polymeric acetate by drop-casting as well as thermal sublimation, a key aspect for the development of future devices embedding these magnetic objects.

Acid Responsive Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks

A porous hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) responsive to acid was constructed from a hexaazatrinaphthylene derivative with carboxyphenyl groups (CPHATN). Precise structures of both 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene solvate [CPHATN-1(TCB)] and activated HOF with permanent porosity (CPHATN-1a) were successfully determined by single-crystalline X-ray diffraction analysis. Permanent porosity of CPHATN-1a was evaluated by gas sorption experiments at low temperature. CPHATN-1a also shows significant thermal stability up to 633 K. Its crystals exhibit a rich photochemistry thanks to intramolecular charge-transfer and interunit proton-transfer reactions. Femtosecond (fs) experiments on crystals demonstrate that these events occur in ≤200 fs and 1.2 ps, respectively. Moreover, single-crystal fluorescence microscopy reveals a shift of the emission spectra most probably as a result of defects and a high anisotropic behavior, reflecting an ordered crystalline structure with a preferential orientation of the molecular dipole moments. Remarkably, CPHATN-1a, as a result of the protonation of pyradyl nitrogen atoms embedded in its π-conjugated core, shows reversible vapor acid-induced color changes from yellow to reddish-brown, which can be also followed by an ON/OFF of its emission. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first HOF that exhibits acid-responsive color changes. The present work provides new findings for developing stimuli responsive HOFs.
