Abstract
A new ratiometric fluorescent sensor (LP) based on bicarboxaminoquinoline was designed and synthesized for sequentially recognizing Zn2+ and PPi. In aqueous solution, LP exhibited the ratiometric fluorescence response towards Zn2+, along with the about 4-folds enhancement of fluorescence quantum yield. Subsequently, the LP-Zn2+ complex displayed the fluorescence recovery upon adding PPi through the displacement strategy. And the LODs of LP and its Zn2+ complex for sensing Zn2+ and PPi were found to be 15 nM and 5.5 nM, respectively. Notably, the reversibility of LP for sequentially sensing Zn2+ and PPi had been employed to construct the INHIBIT logic gate. Moreover, LP and its Zn2+ complex had been successfully utilized for the detection of Zn2+ and PPi in two real water samples and cells imaging.

Abstract
A new quinoline-based COF (covalent organic framework), obtained by Povarov reaction, containing 2,6-diisopropylphenyl moieties as substituents over the heterocyclic ring is described for detecting Zn2+ in aqueous solution. The introduction of the mentioned bulky phenyl rings into the network favors an increase of the distance between the reticular sheets and their arrangement, obtaining a new material with an alternating AB type stacking. The new material exhibits good selectivity to detect Zn2+ by fluorescence emission in aqueous solutions up to a concentration of 1.2 × 10-4 m of the metal ion. In order to have a deeper insight into the interaction between the COF and the zinc cation, a thorough spectroscopical, microscopical, and theoretical study is also presented and discussed in this communication.

Abstract
A new cyclometalated Ir(III) complex of a methylene-bridged benzimidazole-substituted 1,2,3-triazole methanol ligand has been synthesized for the photoluminescent detection of pyrophosphate (H2P2O72-) anions. The solution structure of 1[PF6] was fully characterized by 1D (1H, 13C) and 2D (1H-1H COSY, 1H-13C HSQC, and 1H-13C HMBC) NMR spectroscopy, and ESI-HRMS. The 1[PF6] acted as a highly selective luminescent sensor for H2P2O72- in CH3CN over other competitive ions, including H2PO4-, ATP, ADP and AMP. The PL titration of 1[PF6] with H2P2O72- in CH3CN furnished the association constant Ka = 8.6 × 107 M-1 and a low detection limit of ∼127 nM. The structure of the analyte interacting ligand renders the Ir(III) complex-based probe highly selective for H2P2O72- ions. The PL enhancement with H2P2O72- is due to the hydrogen bonding interaction of H2P2O72- with the triazole C-H, imidazole N-H, methylene hydrogen and hydroxyl groups of the ligand that has been supported by 1H NMR titration. Further, the PL enhancement of 1·H2P2O72- adducts was supported by triplet-state TDDFT calculations. In 1·H2P2O72-, the 3MLCT-3MC energy gap is increased, and the 1·H2P2O72- emits efficiently from the 3MLCT and 3ILCT excited states. Finally, a cytotoxicity study and live-cell imaging were performed. The probe showed low cytotoxicity against HeLa cells and was suitable for intracellular pyrophosphate imaging.

Abstract
Efficient detection of arsenate (AsO43-) from contaminated drinking water extracted from underground has become a matter of utmost necessity and an exquisite challenge owing to the growing public health issue due to arsenicosis. In order to combat this we planned to detect arsenate with the naked eye under UV light using a novel chemosensor material whose structure and functioning as a sensor could be certified mechanistically. Hence we were encouraged to synthesize two differently O-substituted imidazole based homologous ligands: C1 (HL1 = 2-((E)-(3-(1H-imidazole-1-yl)propylimino)methyl)-6-ethoxyphenol) and C2 (HL2 = 2-((E)-(3-(1H-imidazole-1-yl)propylimino)methyl)-6-methoxyphenol). To accomplish the purposeful exploration of the luminescent sensor, we considered Chelation Enhanced Fluorescence (CHEF) and kept on searching for a metal cation that would be able to turn on the fluorescence of the ligands. Considering Zn(II) as the most suitable candidate, luminescent complexes D1 and D2 ({[Zn2(L1)2(I)2](DMF)} and [Zn2(L2)2(I)2](DMF), respectively) were synthesized and characterized by SXRD, UV-Vis, FT-IR, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. In spite of the resemblance in the solid state structures of D1 and D2, the selective response of D1 towards arsenate with high quenching constants (2.13 × 106), unlike D2, has been demonstrated mechanistically with steady state and time resolved fluorescence titration, solution phase ESI-MS spectral analysis and DFT studies. The selectivity and sensitivity of the sensor D1 explicitly make this material a potent candidate for arsenate detection due to its very low detection limit (8.2 ppb), low cost and user friendly characteristics. Real life implementation of this work in a test strip is expected to prove beneficial for public health to identify arsenate polluted water.

Abstract
In this work, new ethyl(E)-2-cyano-3-(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)acrylate appended C3-symmetric star-shape triaminoguanidine based Schiff base (LH3) was designed and synthesized from simple synthons. New probe, LH3 was completely analyzed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR and mass spectrum. In the present probe LH3, effective π-conjugated ethyl(E)-2-cyano-acrylate unit was introduced on the periphery of the pyrrole-triaminoquanidine conjugates by using carefully chosen building units. The probe LH3 shows high selectivity and sensitivity towards Zn2+ ion via colorimetric and fluorometric changes. The yellowish orange color of LH3 solution turned to wine red color upon addition of Zn2+ solution, along with red shifted absorption maxima from 450 nm to 550 nm, this indicates the formation of LH3-Zn2+ species. Job's plot and mass spectrum analysis confirms the formation of 1:3 stoichiometric complex between the LH3 and Zn2+ ions. Further this ensemble shows selective detection towards PPi anion over the other anions based on displacement metal ion approach. Hence, reversible colorimetric/emission response of LH3 towards Zn2+ and PPi ions via "on-off-on" manner could allow the construction of IMPLICATION logic gate functions. The practical efficacy of the probe LH3 was established by utilization of the probe for the detection of Zn2+ ions in real water sample analysis. Further, the significant noticeable colorimetric changes of the probe LH3 upon addition of Zn2+ ion have been successfully integrated with a smartphone app RGB color value to construct a real-time analysis of Zn2+ ions.

Abstract
A chemosensor DQ (2-(2-(quinolin-2-yl)hydrazinyl)-N-(quinolin-8-yl)acetamide), based on two quinoline moieties, has been synthesized. DQ could detect zinc ion through fluorescence turn-on in aqueous media. Limit of detection was calculated as 0.07 μM, far lower than the standard of WHO for zinc ion. The practicality of DQ was demonstrated via the successful results of reusability with EDTA, easy detection on the test strip, and precise quantification in real water samples. Additionally, sensor DQ could be applied to bioimaging of zinc ion in zebrafish. Sensing process of zinc ion by DQ was studied through fluorescence and UV-Vis spectroscopy, 1H NMR titration, and ESI-mass spectrometry.

Abstract
The design and construction of novel C3-symmetric triaminoguanidine-triphenylamine conjugate (L) has been demonstrated and it displays positive solvatochromic behaviour with an increase in solvent polarity. The probe L acts as a selective colorimetric sensor for Cu2+ ions over other metal ions. Further, it shows high selective and sensitive detection of Fe3+ ions through turn-on fluorescence response. Moreover, the detection limits for Cu2+ and Fe3+ ions were found to be within the allowable range of the World Health Organisation (30 μM). The real-time application of the probe was showed by paper strip experiments as well as detection of Fe3+ ions in pharmaceutical tablets.

Abstract
Chemosensing is one of the widest and powerful techniques for response to anions and cations in living systems serving as bio-probes. Meanwhile, copper(II) (Cu(II)) widely exists in the environment and the human body as a common trace element, which plays an necessary role in most physiological processes. Thus, it is extremely urgent to explore means for effective, rapid and convenient detection of Cu(II) in living cells. Herein, we introduce a novel strategy for designing triphenylamine (TS) and coumarin-based (CS) functional sensors for Cu(II) detection with fluorescence "OFF" switching mechanism by blocking intramolecular charge transfer (ICT). Based on this design strategy, we have demonstrated two kinds of fluorophores sensors with aunique new fluorescent dye and excellent photophysical properties, which have shown rapid recognition of Cu(II) via a stoichiometric ratio of 2:1 and the proposed binding mode was confirmed by the single-crystal structure of CS-Cu(II) complex. In addition, we have carried out density functional theory (DFT) calculation with the B3LYP exchange functional employing RB3LYP/6-31G basis sets to get insight into the mechanism of Cu(II)-sensors alongside their optical properties. Furthermore, the sensors were capable of bio-imaging Cu(II) in living cancer cells (HepG2, A549 and Hela) with low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility shown. Taken together, We expect that this novel strategy would provide new insight into the development of Cu(II) detection techniques and could be used more for biomedical applications.

Subtle structural variation in azine/imine derivatives controls Zn2+ sensitivity: ESIPT-CHEF combination for nano-molar detection of Zn2+ with DFT support. RSC Adv 2019; 9:21302-21310. Abstract
Excited-state intra-molecular proton transfer (ESIPT)-active imine and azine derivatives, structurally characterised by XRD, and denoted L1, L2, L3 and L4, possess weak fluorescence. The interaction of these probes with Zn2+ turns ON the fluorescence to allow its nano-molar detection. Among the four ESIPT-active molecules, L2, L3 and L4 are bis-imine derivatives while L1 is a mono-imine derivative. Among the three bis-imine derivatives, one is symmetric (L3) while L2 and L4 are unsymmetrical. The lowest detection limits (DL) of L1, L2, L3 and L4 for Zn2+ are 32.66 nM, 36.16 nM, 15.20 nM and 33.50 nM respectively. All the probes bind Zn2+ (105 M−1 order) strongly. Computational studies explore the orbital level interactions responsible for the associated photo-physical processes. Single crystal X-ray structurally characterised ESIPT-active weakly fluorescent imine and azine derivatives undergo Zn2+ assisted turn ON fluorescence.![]()
