A metal-organic framework based on a custom-designed diisophthalate ligand exhibiting excellent hydrostability and highly selective adsorption of C2H2 and CO2 over CH4

Improved structure of Zr-BTC metal organic framework using NH2 to enhance CO2 adsorption performance

Modified mesoporous NH2-Zr-BTC mixed ligand MOF nanocomposites were synthesized via the hydrothermal method as a novel adsorbent for CO2 capture. The newly modified MOF-808 with NH2 demonstrated a similar mesoporous morphology as MOF-808, whereas the specific surface area, pore volume, and average particle size, respectively, increased by 15%, 6%, and 46% compared to those of MOF-808. The characterization analyses exhibited the formation of more active groups on the adsorbent surface after modification. In addition, a laboratory adsorption setup was used to evaluate the effect of temperature, pressure, and NH2 content on the CO2 adsorption capacity in the range of 25-65 °C, 1-9 bar, and 0-20 wt%, respectively. An increase in pressure and a decrease in temperature enhanced the adsorption capacity. The highest equilibrium adsorption capacity of 369.11 mg/g was achieved at 25 °C, 9 bar, and 20 wt% NH2. By adding 20 wt% NH2, the maximum adsorption capacity calculated by the Langmuir model increased by about 4% compared to that of pure MOF-808. Moreover, Ritchie second-order and Sips models were the best-fitted models to predict the kinetics and isotherm data of CO2 adsorption capacity with the high correlation coefficient (R2 > 0.99) and AARE% of less than 0.1. The ΔH°, ΔS°, and ΔG° values were - 17.360 kJ/mol, - 0.028 kJ/mol K, and - 8.975 kJ/mol, respectively, demonstrating a spontaneous, exothermic, and physical adsorption process. Furthermore, the capacity of MH-20% sample decreased from 279.05 to 257.56 mg/g after 15 cycles, verifying excellent stability of the prepared mix-ligand MOF sorbent.

A Microporous MOF Constructed by Cross-Linking Helical Chains for Efficient Purification of Natural Gas and Ethylene

Natural gas (NG) and ethylene (C₂H₄) are two raw materials of significant value for manufacturing versatile fine chemicals and/or polymers, and thus the development of solid adsorbing agents such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) applied to their depuration is very crucial but remains highly challenging. In this research, we designed and synthesized a ligand containing mixed N and O coordination donors, which was solvothermally assembled with Cu(II) ions to generate a microporous MOF. X-ray crystallography revealed that the title MOF incorporates one-dimensional (1D) homochiral helical chains that are datively cross-linked to form open channels in the three-periodic coordination framework. Furthermore, the behaviors of C₁-C₂ hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide (CO₂) adsorbed in the title MOF were systematically investigated, revealing its promising potential for the purification of both NG and C₂H₄. At 109 kPa and 298 K, the C₂/methane (CH₄), CO₂/CH₄, and acetylene (C₂H₂)/C₂H₄ adsorption selectivities are impressive, reaching as high as 62.9, 28.6, and 3.5, respectively. This work represents a unique MOF based on cross-linked homochiral helical chains exhibiting dual-function separation potentials for NG and C₂H₄ purifications.

Ligand Bent-Angle Engineering for Tuning Topological Structures and Acetylene Purification Performances of Copper-Diisophthalate Frameworks

To enrich structural chemistry and widen the application prospects of MOFs (metal-organic frameworks), the development of a synthetic strategy to realize structural and functional modulation is highly demanded. By implementation of the linker bent-angle engineering strategy, three banana-like diisophthalate linkers with distinct bent angles were designed and synthesized. The inclusion of the targeted linkers into MOFs through solvothermal assembly with CuCl₂·2H₂O under identical conditions yielded three crystalline solids featuring diversified topological structures as revealed by X-ray crystallographic studies. Furthermore, functional explorations indicated that they are promising solid adsorbents for acetylene (C₂H₂) purification application with structurally dependent separation potentials. The results reported in this study illustrated a rare example of modulating the topological structures and separation efficiencies of MOFs by engineering the ligand bent angles.

Water and Metal-Organic Frameworks: From Interaction toward Utilization

The steep stepwise uptake of water vapor and easy release at low relative pressures and moderate temperatures together with high working capacities make metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) attractive, promising materials for energy efficient applications in adsorption devices for humidity control (evaporation and condensation processes) and heat reallocation (heating and cooling) by utilizing water as benign sorptive and low-grade renewable or waste heat. Emerging MOF-based process applications covered are desiccation, heat pumps/chillers, water harvesting, air conditioning, and desalination. Governing parameters of the intrinsic sorption properties and stability under humid conditions and cyclic operation are identified. Transport of mass and heat in MOF structures, at least as important, is still an underexposed topic. Essential engineering elements of operation and implementation are presented. An update on stability of MOFs in water vapor and liquid systems is provided, and a suite of 18 MOFs are identified for selective use in heat pumps and chillers, while several can be used for air conditioning, water harvesting, and desalination. Most applications with MOFs are still in an exploratory state. An outlook is given for further R&D to realize these applications, providing essential kinetic parameters, performing smart engineering in the design of systems, and conceptual process designs to benchmark them against existing technologies. A concerted effort bridging chemistry, materials science, and engineering is required.

Two ultramicroporous metal-organic frameworks assembled from binuclear secondary building units for highly selective CO2/N2 separation

Two novel metal-organic frameworks [Ni₂(μ₂-Cl)(BTBA)₂·DMF]·Cl·3DMF (JLU-MOF56, BTBA = 3,5-bis(triazol-1-yl)benzoic acid) and [Co₂(μ₂-Cl)(BTBA)₂·DMF]·Cl·3DMF (JLU-MOF57) have been successfully synthesized under solvothermal conditions. Crystallographic analysis indicates that the two compounds with different metal ions are isoreticular and both are constructed from binuclear [M₂(μ₂-Cl)(COO)₂N₄] (M = Co, Ni) and a 3-connected hetero-N,O donor ligand. The overall framework possesses a (3,6)-connected dag topology. Furthermore, both of them feature ultramicroporous channels of 3.5 Å× 3.4 Å, which are suitable for adsorbing smaller carbon dioxide (CO₂) gas molecules but not larger nitrogen (N₂) gas molecules. Therefore, JLU-MOF56 and JLU-MOF57 exhibit good performance for CO₂/N₂ separation, and are promising materials for gas adsorption and purification.
