Slow magnetic relaxation and luminescence properties in lanthanide(iii)/anil complexes

Combined experimental and theoretical studies on a series of mononuclear LnIII single-molecule magnets: dramatic influence of remote substitution on the magnetic dynamics in Dy analogues

A series of Ln^III complexes of general formula [Ln(H₂L¹)₂(NO₃)₂(H₂O)](NO₃) (1-5) [Ln = Dy (1), Tb (2) Ho (3), Er (4), and Yb (5)] and an analogous Dy^III complex with ligand H₂L², [Dy(H₂L²)₂(NO₃)₃(H₂O)](NO₃) (6), where H₂L¹ and H₂L² stand for (E)-2-[(2-hydroxyphenyl)iminomethyl]-6-methoxy-4-methylphenol and (E)-2-[(2-hydroxy-5-methylphenyl)iminomethyl]-6-methoxy-4-methylphenol, respectively, have been synthesized and magneto-structurally characterized. All these complexes are isostructural and isomorphous, in which the zwitterionic form of the ligands predominantly coordinate the metal centers. The magnetic study revealed that complex 3 displays negligible SMM behaviour, while 1 and 6 are zero field SMMs, the performance of which can largely be improved in the presence of an applied dc field by lowering under barrier relaxation processes, and finally 2, 4, and 5 are field-induced SMMs. The most remarkable observation in the present study is the dramatically-enhanced SMM performance in 6 compared to 1, achieved by only a remote methyl substitution at the ligand framework to increase the intermolecular separation. Although SINGLE_ANISO ab initio calculations for 1 and 6 are very similar, the POLY_ANISO module revealed weak dipolar interactions in both the compounds but significant antiferromagnetic interaction in 1, thereby justifying the experimental fact. The present work discloses that even a small substitution such as a methyl group can adequately increase the intermolecular separation, leading to several-fold enhanced effective energy barrier.

Four mononuclear dysprosium complexes with neutral Schiff-base ligands: syntheses, crystal structures and slow magnetic relaxation behavior

Four mononuclear 9-coordinate Dy-based complexes, [Dy(HL¹)₂(NO₃)₃(CH₃OH)] (1Dy), [Dy(HL²)₂(NO₃)₃(H₂O)] (2Dy), [Dy(HL³)₃(NO₃)₃]·CH₃CN (3Dy), and [Dy(HL⁴)₃(NO₃)₃] (4Dy), have been constructed by neutral Schiff-base ligands (1-[N-(4-R)aminomethylidene-2(1H)-naphthalenone, R = -Cl (HL¹), -NO₂ (HL²), -OCH₃ (HL³), -I (HL⁴)). By tuning the terminal substituent group of HL ligands, the number of HL ligands coordinated to the central Dy³⁺ ion unexpectedly varies from 2 to 3, and the local symmetry around the Dy³⁺ ion reduces from D_3h to C_s. Magnetic measurements reveal that 2Dy can display single-ion magnet (SIM) behavior in zero dc field, while 1Dy, 3Dy and 4Dy show field-induced slow magnetic relaxation. Ab initio calculations were employed to elucidate magnetic anisotropy in the complexes, including g-tensors, averaged transition magnetic moments and magnetic easy axes. The difference in magnetic behaviors of the four complexes can be ascribed to the terminal substituent effect of neutral Schiff-base ligands.

Dinuclear Lanthanide(III) Complexes from the Use of Methyl 2-Pyridyl Ketoxime: Synthetic, Structural, and Physical Studies

The first use of methyl 2-pyridyl ketoxime (mepaoH) in homometallic lanthanide(III) [Ln(III)] chemistry is described. The 1:2 reactions of Ln(NO3)3·nH2O (Ln = Nd, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy; n = 5, 6) and mepaoH in MeCN have provided access to complexes [Ln2(O2CMe)4(NO3)2(mepaoH)2] (Ln = Nd, 1; Ln = Eu, 2; Ln = Gd, 3; Ln = Tb, 4; Ln = Dy, 5); the acetato ligands derive from the LnIII-mediated hydrolysis of MeCN. The 1:1 and 1:2 reactions between Dy(O2CMe)3·4H2O and mepaoH in MeOH/MeCN led to the all-acetato complex [Dy2(O2CMe)6(mepaoH)2] (6). Treatment of 6 with one equivalent of HNO3 gave 5. The structures of 1, 5, and 6 were solved by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Elemental analyses and IR spectroscopy provide strong evidence that 2-4 display similar structural characteristics with 1 and 5. The structures of 1-5 consist of dinuclear molecules in which the two LnIII centers are bridged by two bidentate bridging (η1:η1:μ2) and two chelating-bridging (η1:η2:μ2) acetate groups. The LnIII atoms are each chelated by a N,N'-bidentate mepaoH ligand and a near-symmetrical bidentate nitrato group. The molecular structure of 6 is similar to that of 5, the main difference being the presence of two chelating acetato groups in the former instead of the two chelating nitrato groups in the latter. The geometry of the 9-coordinate LnIII centers in 1, 5 and 6 can be best described as a muffin-type (MFF-9). The 3D lattices of the isomorphous 1 and 5 are built through H-bonding, π⋯π stacking and C-H⋯π interactions, while the 3D architecture of 6 is stabilized by H bonds. The IR spectra of the complexes are discussed in terms of the coordination modes of the organic and inorganic ligands involved. The Eu(III) complex 2 displays a red, metal-ion centered emission in the solid state; the TbIII atom in solid 4 emits light in the same region with the ligand. Magnetic susceptibility studies in the 2.0-300 K range reveal weak antiferromagnetic intramolecular GdIII…GdIII exchange interactions in 3; the J value is -0.09(1) cm-1 based on the spin Hamiltonian Ĥ = -J(ŜGd1·ŜGd2).

Asymmetric Dinuclear Lanthanide(III) Complexes from the Use of a Ligand Derived from 2-Acetylpyridine and Picolinoylhydrazide: Synthetic, Structural and Magnetic Studies

A family of four Ln(III) complexes has been synthesized with the general formula [Ln₂(NO₃)₄(L)₂(S)] (Ln = Gd, Tb, Er, and S = H₂O; 1, 2 and 4, respectively/Ln = Dy, S = MeOH, complex 3), where HL is the flexible ditopic ligand N’-(1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethylidene)pyridine-2-carbohydrazide. The structures of isostructural MeOH/H₂O solvates of these complexes were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The two Ln^III ions are doubly bridged by the deprotonated oxygen atoms of two “head-to-head” 2.21011 (Harris notation) L¯ ligands, forming a central, nearly rhombic {Ln^III₂(μ-OR)₂}⁴⁺ core. Two bidentate chelating nitrato groups complete a sphenocoronal 10-coordination at one metal ion, while two bidentate chelating nitrato groups and one solvent molecule (H₂O or MeOH) complete a spherical capped square antiprismatic 9-coordination at the other. The structures are critically compared with those of other, previously reported metal complexes of HL or L¯. The IR spectra of 1–4 are discussed in terms of the coordination modes of the organic and inorganic ligands involved. The f-f transitions in the solid-state (diffuse reflectance) spectra of the Tb(III), Dy(III), and Er(III) complexes have been fully assigned in the UV/Vis and near-IR regions. Magnetic susceptibility studies in the 1.85–300 K range reveal the presence of weak, intramolecular Gd^III∙∙∙Gd^III antiferromagnetic exchange interactions in 1 [J/k_B = −0.020(6) K based on the spin Hamiltonian Ĥ = −2J(Ŝ_Gd1∙ Ŝ_Gd2)] and probably weak antiferromagnetic Ln^III∙∙∙Ln^III exchange interactions in 2–4. Ac susceptibility measurements in zero dc field do not show frequency dependent out-of-phase signals, and this experimental fact is discussed for 3 in terms of the magnetic anisotropy axis for each Dy^III center and the oblate electron density of this metal ion. Complexes 3 and 4 are Single-Molecule Magnets (SMMs) and this behavior is optimally observed under external dc fields of 600 and 1000 Oe, respectively. The magnetization relaxation pathways are discussed and a satisfactory fit of the temperature and field dependencies of the relaxation time τ was achieved considering a model that employs Raman, direct, and Orbach relaxation mechanisms.

Tetranuclear oxido-bridged thorium(iv) clusters obtained using tridentate Schiff bases

Thorium(iv) complexes are currently attracting intense attention from inorganic chemists due to the development of liquid-fluoride thorium reactors and the fact that thorium(iv) is often used as a model system for the study of the more radioactive Np(iv) and Pu(iv). Schiff-base complexes of tetravalent actinides are useful for the development of new separation strategies in nuclear fuel processing and nuclear waste management. Thorium(iv)-Schiff base complexes find applications in the colorimetric detection of this toxic metal ion and the construction of fluorescent on/off sensors for Th(iv) exploiting the ligand-based light emission of its complexes. Clusters of Th(iv) with hydroxide, oxide or peroxide bridges are also relevant to the environmental and geological chemistry of this metal ion. The reactions between Th(NO₃)₄·5H₂O and N-salicylidene-o-aminophenol (LH₂) and N-salicylidene-o-amino-4-methylphenol (L'H₂) in MeCN have provided access to complexes [Th₄O(NO₃)₂(LH)₂(L)₅] (1) and [Th₄O(NO₃)₂(L'H)₂(L')₅] (2) in moderate yields. The structures of 1·4MeCN and 2·2.4 MeCN have been determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The complexes have similar molecular structures possessing the {Th₄(μ₄-O)(μ-OR')₈} core that contains the extremely rare {Th₄(μ₄-O)} unit. The four Th^IV atoms are arranged at the vertexes of a distorted tetrahedron with a central μ₄-O^2- ion bonded to each metal ion. The H atom of one of the acidic -OH groups of each 3.21 LH^- or L'H^- ligand is located on the imine nitrogen atom, thus blocking its coordination. The Th^IV centres are also held together by one 3.221 L^2- or (L')^2- group and four 2.211 L^2- or (L')^2- ligands. The metal ions adopt three different coordination numbers (8, 9, and 10) with a total of four coordination geometries (triangular dodecahedral, muffin, biaugmented trigonal prismatic, and sphenocorona). A variety of H-bonding interactions create 1D chains and 2D layers in the crystal structures of 1·4 MeCN and 2·2.4 MeCN, respectively. The structures of the complexes are compared with those of the uranyl complexes with the same or similar ligands. Solid-state and IR data are discussed in terms of the coordination mode of the organic ligands and the nitrato groups. ¹H NMR data suggest that solid-state structures are not retained in DMSO. The solid complexes emit green light at room temperature upon excitation at 400 nm, the emission being ligand-centered.

Multifunctionality in Two Families of Dinuclear Lanthanide(III) Complexes with a Tridentate Schiff-Base Ligand

The employment of N-(2-carboxyphenyl)salicylideneimine in 4f metal chemistry has led to two families of dinuclear complexes depending on the lanthanide(III) used. Representative members exhibit interesting magnetic, optical, and catalytic properties.

Mononuclear Lanthanide(III)-Salicylideneaniline Complexes: Synthetic, Structural, Spectroscopic, and Magnetic Studies

The reactions of hydrated lanthanide(III) [Ln(III)] nitrates and salicylideneaniline (salanH) have provided access to two families of mononuclear complexes depending on the reaction solvent used. In MeCN, the products are [Ln(NO3)3(salanH)2(H2O)]·MeCN, and, in MeOH, the products are [Ln(NO3)3(salanH)2(MeOH)]·(salanH). The complexes within each family are proven to be isomorphous. The structures of complexes [Ln(NO3)3(salanH)2(H2O)]·MeCN (Ln = Eu, 4·MeCN_Eu, Ln = Dy, 7·MeCN_Dy; Ln = Yb, 10·MeCN_Yb) and [Ln(NO3)3(salanH)2(MeOH)]·(salanH) (Ln = Tb, 17_Tb; Ln = Dy, 18_Dy) have been solved by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. In the five complexes, the LnIII center is bound to six oxygen atoms from the three bidentate chelating nitrato groups, two oxygen atoms from the two monodentate zwitterionic salanH ligands, and one oxygen atom from the coordinated H2O or MeOH group. The salanH ligands are mutually “cis” in 4·MeCN_Eu, 7·MeCN_Dy and 10·MeCN_Yb while they are “trans” in 17_Tb and 18_Dy. The lattice salanH molecule in 17_Tb and 18_Dy is also in its zwitterionic form with the acidic H atom being clearly located on the imine nitrogen atom. The coordination polyhedra defined by the nine oxygen donor atoms can be described as spherical tricapped trigonal prisms in 4·MeCN_Eu, 7·MeCN_Dy, and 10·MeCN_Yb and as spherical capped square antiprisms in 17_Tb and 18_Dy. Various intermolecular interactions build the crystal structures, which are completely different in the members of the two families. Solid-state IR data of the complexes are discussed in terms of their structural features. 1H NMR data for the diamagnetic Y(III) complexes provide strong evidence that the compounds decompose in DMSO by releasing the coordinated salanH ligands. The solid complexes emit green light upon excitation at 360 nm (room temperature) or 405 nm (room temperature). The emission is ligand-based. The solid Pr(III), Nd(III), Sm(III), Er(III), and Yb(III) complexes of both families exhibit LnIII-centered emission in the near-IR region of the electromagnetic spectrum, but there is probably no efficient salanH→LnIII energy transfer responsible for this emission. Detailed magnetic studies reveal that complexes 7·MeCN_Dy, 17_Tb and 18_Dy show field-induced slow magnetic relaxation while complex [Tb(NO3)3(salanH)2(H2O)]·MeCN (6·MeCN_Tb) does not display such properties. The values of the effective energy barrier for magnetization reversal are 13.1 cm−1 for 7·MeCN_Dy, 14.8 cm−1 for 17_Tb, and 31.0 cm−1 for 18_Dy. The enhanced/improved properties of 17_Tb and 18_Dy, compared to those of 6_Tb and 7_Dy, have been correlated with the different supramolecular structural features of the two families. The molecules [Ln(NO3)3(salanH)2(MeOH)] of complexes 17_Tb and 18_Dy are by far better isolated (allowing for better slow magnetic relaxation properties) than the molecules [Ln(NO3)3(salanH)2(H2O)] in 6·MeCN_Tb and 7·MeCN_Dy. The perspectives of the present initial studies in the Ln(III)/salanH chemistry are discussed.
