Origin of Reactivity Trends of an Elusive Metathesis Intermediate from NMR Chemical Shift Analysis of Surrogate Analogues

Olefin metathesis has become an efficient tool in synthetic organic chemistry to build carbon-carbon bonds, thanks to the development of Grubbs- and Schrock-type catalysts. Olefin coordination, a key and often rate-determining elementary step for d0 Schrock-type catalysts, has been rarely explored due to the lack of accessible relevant molecular analogues. Herein, we present a fully characterized surrogate of this key olefin-coordination intermediate, namely, a cationic d0 tungsten oxo-methylidene complex bearing two N-heterocyclic carbene ligands─[WO(CH2)Cl(IMes)2](OTf) (1) (IMes = 1,3-dimesitylimidazole-2-ylidene, OTf-triflate counteranion), resulting in a trigonal bipyramidal (TBP) geometry, along with its neutral octahedral analogue [WO(CH2)Cl2(IMes)2] (2)─and an isostructural oxo-methylidyne derivative [WO(CH)Cl(IMes)2] (3). The analysis of their solid-state 13C and 183W MAS NMR signatures, along with computed 17O NMR parameters, helps to correlate their electronic structures with NMR patterns and evidences the importance of the competition among the three equatorial ligands in the TBP complexes. Anchored on experimentally obtained NMR parameters for 1, computational analysis of a series of olefin coordination intermediates highlights the interplay between σ- and π-donating ligands in modulating their stability and further paralleling their reactivity. NMR spectroscopy descriptors reveal the origin for the advantage of the dissymmetry in σ-donating abilities of ancillary ligands in Schrock-type catalysts: weak σ-donors avoid the orbital-competition with the oxo ligand upon formation of a TBP olefin-coordination intermediate, while stronger σ-donors compromise M≡O triple bonding and thus render olefin coordination step energy demanding.

Structure and bonding in rhodium coordination compounds: a 103Rh solid-state NMR and relativistic DFT study

This study demonstrates the application of 103Rh solid-state NMR (SSNMR) spectroscopy to inorganic and organometallic coordination compounds, in combination with relativistic density functional theory (DFT) calculations of 103Rh chemical shift tensors and their analysis with natural bond orbital (NBO) and natural localized molecular orbital (NLMO) protocols, to develop correlations between 103Rh chemical shift tensors, molecular structure, and Rh-ligand bonding. 103Rh is one of the least receptive NMR nuclides, and consequently, there are very few reports in the literature. We introduce robust 103Rh SSNMR protocols for stationary samples, which use the broadband adiabatic inversion-cross polarization (BRAIN-CP) pulse sequence and wideband uniform-rate smooth-truncation (WURST) pulses for excitation, refocusing, and polarization transfer, and demonstrate the acquisition of 103Rh SSNMR spectra of unprecedented signal-to-noise and uniformity. The 103Rh chemical shift tensors determined from these spectra are complemented by NBO/NLMO analyses of contributions of individual orbitals to the 103Rh magnetic shielding tensors to understand their relationship to structure and bonding. Finally, we discuss the potential for these experimental and theoretical protocols for investigating a wide range of materials containing the platinum group elements.

Systematic assessment of DFT methods for geometry optimization of mononuclear platinum-containing complexes

Platinum is used extensively as a catalyst for a wide variety of chemical reactions, though its scarcity and price present limitations to expansions of its use. To understand the origin of platinum's versatility-with the goals of both improving the efficiency of existing catalysts and mimicking its reactivity with more abundant metals-the mechanisms of platinum-catalyzed chemical reactions must be understood via structural and spectroscopic characterization of these catalysts under operando conditions. Such data, typically consisting of complex mixtures of species, often prove challenging to interpret, inviting the aid of chemical theory. DFT calculations in particular have proven successful at predicting structural and spectroscopic parameters of transition metal species, though a thorough investigation of how these methods perform for platinum-based complexes has yet to be undertaken. Herein, we evaluated the performance of geometry optimization for five commonly used functionals (BP86, PBE, B3LYP, PBE0, and TPSSh) in combination with various ligand basis sets, relativistic approximations, and solvation and dispersion models. We applied these DFT methods to a training set of 14 platinum-containing complexes with varying sizes, oxidation states, and number and type of ligands and determined that the best-performing method was the PBE0 functional together with the def2-TZVP basis set for the ligand atoms, the ZORA relativistic approximation, and solvation and dispersion corrections. The ability of this DFT methodology to accurately predict metrical parameters was confirmed using two case studies, most notably by comparing the DFT optimized geometry of a previously uncharacterized complex to newly collected EXAFS data, which showed excellent agreement.

Chlorine-35 Solid-State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy as an Indirect Probe of the Oxidation Number of Tin in Tin Chlorides

Ultrawideline ³⁵Cl solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) spectra of a series of 12 tin chlorides were recorded. The magnitude of the ³⁵Cl quadrupolar coupling constant (C_Q) was shown to consistently indicate the chemical state (oxidation number) of the bound Sn center. The chemical state of the Sn center was independently verified by tin Mössbauer spectroscopy. C_Q(³⁵Cl) values of >30 MHz correspond to Sn(IV), while C_Q(³⁵Cl) readings of <30 MHz indicate that Sn(II) is present. Tin-119 SSNMR experiments would seem to be the most direct and effective route to interrogating tin in these systems, yet we show that ambiguous results can emerge from this method, which may lead to an incorrect interpretation of the Sn oxidation number. The accumulated ³⁵Cl NMR data are used as a guide to assign the Sn oxidation number in the mixed-valent metal complex Ph₃PPd^ImSnCl₂. The synthesis and crystal structure of the related Ph₃PPt^ImSnCl₂ are reported, and ¹⁹⁵Pt and ³⁵Cl SSNMR experiments were also used to investigate its Pt-Sn bonding. Plane-wave DFT calculations of ³⁵Cl, ¹¹⁹Sn, and ¹⁹⁵Pt NMR parameters are used to model and interpret experimental data, supported by computed ¹¹⁹Sn and ¹⁹⁵Pt chemical shift tensor orientations. Given the ubiquity of directly bound Cl centers in organometallic and inorganic systems, there is tremendous potential for widespread usage of ³⁵Cl SSNMR parameters to provide a reliable indication of the chemical state in metal chlorides.

Recent advances in computational 31 P NMR: Part 1. Chemical shifts

This is the first part of two closely related reviews dealing with the computation of phosphorus-31 nuclear magnetic resonance chemical shifts in a wide series of organophosphorus compounds including complexes, clusters, and bioorganic phosphorus compounds. In particular, the analysis of the accuracy factors, such as substitution effects, solvent effects, vibrational corrections, and relativistic effects, is presented. This review is dedicated to the Full Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Professor Boris A. Trofimov in view of his invaluable contribution to the field of synthesis, nuclear magnetic resonance, and computation studies of organophosphorus compounds.

Computational NMR Spectroscopy of Ionic Liquids: [C4C1im]Cl/Water Mixtures

In this work, I have analyzed the structure of binary mixtures of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ionic liquid, [C₄C₁im]Cl, and water, using computational NMR spectroscopy. The structure of the complex fluid phase, where the ionic and hydrophobic nature of ionic liquids is further complicated by the addition of water, is first generated by classical Molecular Dynamics (MD) and then validated by calculating the NMR properties with DFT at the ONIOM(B3LYP/cc-pVTZ//B3LYP/3-21G) on clusters extracted during the MD trajectories. Three ionic liquid/water mixtures have been considered with the [C₄C₁im]Cl mole fraction of 1.00, 0.50, and 0.01, that is the pure ionic liquid [C₄C₁im]Cl, the equimolar [C₄C₁im]Cl/water mixture, and a diluted solution of [C₄C₁im]Cl in water. A good agreement is obtained with published experimental data that, at the same time, validates the structural features obtained from the MD and the force field used, and provides an example of the power of NMR spectroscopy applied to complex fluid phases.

Stable mixed-valence diphenylphosphanido bridged platinum(ii)-platinum(iv) complexes

The reaction between [NnBu4][(C6F5)2PtII(μ-PPh2)2PtIV(C^N)(I)2] (C^N = κ2-N,C-benzoquinolinate, 1) and (i) bidentate S^S, N^S and O^O anionic ligands or (ii) monodentate S- N- or O-based anionic ligands was studied in order to investigate the factors that may guarantee the stability of Pt(ii),Pt(iv) mixed-valence dinuclear phosphanido complexes. While reactions of 1 with S^S or N^S ligands afforded stable Pt(ii),Pt(iv) species of general formula [(C6F5)2PtII(μ-PPh2)2PtIV(C^N)(L^S)]x- [(L^S)(x-1) = 2-mercaptopyrimidinate (pymS-), 2-mercaptopyridinate (pyS-), dimethyldithiocarbamate (Me2NCS2-), ethyl xanthogenate (EtOCS2-) and 1,2-benzenedithiolate (PhS22-)], the reaction of 1 with the O^O ligand sodium acetylacetonate gave several products, and no pure Pt(ii),Pt(iv) complex could be isolated. The reaction of monodentate ligands such as PhS-, OH- or N3- with 1 led to a stable Pt(ii),Pt(iv) complex only in the case of N3-. The reaction with OH- afforded the Pt(ii),Pt(ii) complex [(C6F5)2PtII(μ-PPh2)(κ2-O,P-μ-O-PPh2)PtII(C^N)]- (8) deriving from reductive coupling of a diphenylphosphanide and an O-donor ligand coordinated to the Pt(iv) centre, while the reaction with PhS- produced the unstable Pt(ii),Pt(iv) complex [NnBu4][(C6F5)2PtII(μ-PPh2)2PtIV(C^N)(PhS)2] (11) that evolved in solution to the Pt(ii),Pt(ii) species [NnBu4][(C6F5)2PtII(μ-PPh2)2PtII(C^N)] (9) by elimination of diphenyldisulfide. Thus, the stability of mixed valence Pt(ii),Pt(iv) phosphanide complexes is affected by several concurrent factors, including the chelating effect of the ligands and the type of ligating atoms.

Double addition of phenylacetylene onto the mixed bridge phosphinito-phosphanido Pt(i) complex [(PHCy2)Pt(μ-PCy2){κ2P,O-μ-P(O)Cy2}Pt(PHCy2)](Pt-Pt)

The reaction of the dinuclear phosphinito bridged complex [(PHCy2)Pt(μ-PCy2){κ2P,O-μ-P(O)Cy2}Pt(PHCy2)](Pt-Pt) (1) with phenylacetylene affords the η1-alkenyl-μ,η1:η2-alkynyl complex [(η1-trans-(Ph)HC[double bond, length as m-dash]CH)(PHCy2)Pt(μ-PCy2)(μ,η1:η2-PhC[triple bond, length as m-dash]C)Pt{κP-P(O)Cy2}(PHCy2)] (4) displaying a σ-bonded 2-phenylethenyl ligand and an alkynyl (μ-κCα:η2) bridge between the platinum atoms. Complex 4 was shown to form in two steps: initially, the attack of the first molecule of phenylacetylene gives the σ-acetylide complex [(PHCy2)(η1-PhC[triple bond, length as m-dash]C)Pt1(μ-PCy2)Pt2(PHCy2){κP-P(OH)Cy2}](Pt-Pt) (5) featuring an intramolecular π-type hydrogen bond between the POH and the C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C triple bond; fast reaction of 5 with a second molecule of phenylacetylene results in the oxidative addition of the terminal C-H bond of the second alkyne to Pt1 that, after rearrangements, leads to 4. When left in solution for two weeks, complex 4 spontaneously isomerizes completely to [(PHCy2)(η1-trans-(Ph)HC[double bond, length as m-dash]CH)Pt(μ-PCy2){κ2P,O-μ-P(O)Cy2}Pt(η1-PhC[triple bond, length as m-dash]C)(PHCy2)] (7) displaying a 2-phenylethenyl ligand and a phenylethynyl group both σ-bonded to the metal. Density functional calculations at the B3LYP/LACV3P++**//DFT/LACVP* level were carried out to study the thermodynamics of the formation of all considered complexes and to trace the mechanism of formation of the observed products.
