Architecture of yolk-shell structured mesoporous silica nanospheres for catalytic applications

Tunability of Interactions between the Core and Shell in Rattle-Type Particles Studied with Liquid-Cell Electron Microscopy

Yolk-shell or rattle-type particles consist of a core particle that is free to move inside a thin shell. A stable core with a fully accessible surface is of interest in fields such as catalysis and sensing. However, the stability of a charged nanoparticle core within the cavity of a charged thin shell remains largely unexplored. Liquid-cell (scanning) transmission electron microscopy is an ideal technique to probe the core-shell interactions at nanometer spatial resolution. Here, we show by means of calculations and experiments that these interactions are highly tunable. We found that in dilute solutions adding a monovalent salt led to stronger confinement of the core to the middle of the geometry. In deionized water, the Debye length κ-1 becomes comparable to the shell radius Rshell, leading to a less steep electric potential gradient and a reduced core-shell interaction, which can be detrimental to the stability of nanorattles. For a salt concentration range of 0.5-250 mM, the repulsion was relatively long-ranged due to the concave geometry of the shell. At salt concentrations of 100 and 250 mM, the core was found to move almost exclusively near the shell wall, which can be due to hydrodynamics, a secondary minimum in the interaction potential, or a combination of both. The possibility of imaging nanoparticles inside shells at high spatial resolution with liquid-cell electron microscopy makes rattle particles a powerful experimental model system to learn about nanoparticle interactions. Additionally, our results highlight the possibilities for manipulating the interactions between core and shell that could be used in future applications.

Recent Trends in Morphology-Controlled Synthesis and Application of Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles

The outstanding journey towards the investigation of mesoporous materials commences with the discovery of high surface area porous silica materials, named MCM-41 (Mobil Composition of Matter-41) according to the inventors' name Mobile scientists in the United States. Based on a self-assembled supramolecular templating mechanism, the synthesis of mesoporous silica has extended to wide varieties of silica categories along with versatile applications of all these types in many fields. These silica families have some extraordinary structural features, like highly tunable nanoscale sized pore diameter, good Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface areas, good flexibility to accommodate different organic and inorganic functional groups, metals etc., onto their surface. As a consequence, thousands of scientists and researchers throughout the world have reported numerous silica materials in the form of published articles, communication, reviews, etc. Beside this, attention is also given to the morphology-oriented synthesis of silica nanoparticles and their significant effects on the emerging fields of study like catalysis, energy applications, sensing, environmental, and biomedical research. This review highlights a consolidated overview of those morphology-based mesoporous silica particles, emphasizing their syntheses and potential role in many promising fields of research.

A facile route to prepare mixed transition metal oxide yolk-shell microspheres for enhanced lithium storage

A coordination co-precipitation route followed by a calcination process was developed to prepare mixed transition metal oxide microspheres with a yolk-shell structure. ZnCo2O4, NiCo2O4, MnCo2O4, ZnMn2O4 and CoMn2O4 have been successfully fabricated, which demonstrates the universality of this route. As a promising anode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), ZnCo2O4 was investigated as a typical example, which showed a remarkable reversible capacity of 1063 mA h g-1 after 50 cycles at a current density of 200 mA g-1 and a good rate capability of 839 mA h g-1 after 200 cycles at a large current density of 900 mA g-1. This work shows the extensive potential of a general route for the synthesis of yolk-shell microspheres for next-generation energy conversion and storage devices.
