Dual-Responsive and Reusable Optical Sensors Based on 2,3-Diaminoquinoxalines for Acidity Measurements in Low-pH Aqueous Solutions

This work is focused on the age-old challenge of developing optical sensors for acidity measurements in low-pH aqueous solutions (pH < 5). We prepared halochromic (3-aminopropyl)amino-substituted quinoxalines QC1 and QC8 possessing different hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) and investigated them as molecular components of pH sensors. Embedding the hydrophilic quinoxaline QC1 into the agarose matrix by sol-gel process allows for fabrication of pH responsive polymers and paper test strips. The emissive films thus obtained can be used for a semi-quantitative dual-color visualization of pH in aqueous solution. Being exposed to acidic solutions with pH in the range of 1-5, they rapidly give different color changes when the analysis is performed in daylight or under irradiation at 365 nm. Compared with classical non-emissive pH indicators, these dual-responsive pH sensors allow for an increase in the accuracy of pH measurements, particularly in complex environmental samples. pH indicators for quantitative analysis can be prepared by the immobilization of amphiphilic quinoxaline QC8 using Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) and Langmuir-Schäfer (LS) techniques. Compound QC8 possessing two long alkyl chains (n-C₈H₁₇) forms stable Langmuir monolayers at the air-water interface, and these monolayers can be successfully transferred onto hydrophilic quartz and hydrophobic polyvinylchlorid (PVC) substrates using LB and LS techniques, respectively. The 30-layer films thus obtained are emissive, reveal excellent stability, and can be used as dual-responsive pH indicators for quantitative measurements in real-world samples with pH in the range of 1-3. The films can be regenerated by immersing them in basic aqueous solution (pH = 11) and can be reused at least five times.

Turn on Fluorescence Sensing of Zn2+ Based on Fused Isoindole-Imidazole Scaffold

Optical chemosensors caused a revolution in the field of sensing due to their high specificity, sensitivity, and fast detection features. Imidazole derivatives have offered promising features in the literature as they bear suitable donor/acceptor groups for the selective analytes in the skeleton. In this work, an isoindole-imidazole containing a Schiff base chemosensor (1-{3-[(2-Diethylamino-ethylimino)-methyl]-2-hydroxy-5-methyl-phenyl}-2H-imidazo[5,1-a]isoindole-3,5-dione) was designed and synthesized. The complete sensing phenomena have been investigated by means of UV-Vis, fluorescence, lifetime measurement, FT-IR, NMR and ESI-MS spectroscopic techniques. The optical properties of the synthesized ligand were investigated in 3:7 HEPES buffer:DMSO medium and found to be highly selective and sensitive toward Zn²⁺ ion through a fluorescence turn-on response with detection limit of 0.073 μm. Furthermore, this response is effective in gel form also. The competition studies reveal that the response of the probe for Zn²⁺ ion is unaffected by other relevant metal ions. The stoichiometric binding study was performed utilizing Job’s method which indicated a 1:1 sensor–Zn²⁺ ensemble. Computational calculations were performed to pinpoint the mechanism of sensing.

Reusable Cavitand-Based Electrospun Membranes for the Removal of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons from Water

The removal of toxic and carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from water is one of the most intractable environmental problems nowadays, because of their resistance to remediation. This work introduces a highly efficient, regenerable membrane for the removal of PAHs from water, featuring excellent filter performance and pH-driven release, thanks to the integration of a cavitand receptor in electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers. The role of the cavitand receptor is to act as molecular gripper for the uptake/release of PAHs. To this purpose, the deep cavity cavitand BenzoQxCav is designed and synthetized and its molecular structure is elucidated via X-Ray diffraction. The removal efficiency of the new adsorbent material toward the 16 priority PAHs is demonstrated via GC-MS analyses at ng L^-1 concentration. A removal efficiency in the 32%, to 99% range is obtained. The regeneration of the membrane is performed by exploiting the pH-driven conformational switching of the cavitand between the vase form, where the PAHs uptake takes place, to the kite one, where the PAHs release occurs. The absorbance and regeneration capability of the membrane are successfully tested in four uptake/release cycles and the morphological stability.

Strategic Substitution of -OH/-NR2 (R=Et, Me) Imparts Colorimetric Switching between F- and Hg2+ by Salicyaldehyde/Benzaldehyde-Quinoxaline Conjugates

We herein report two salicyaldehyde-quinoxaline (HQS and HQSN) conjugates and a benzaldehyde-quinoxaline (QBN) conjugate to fabricate selective chemosensors for F^- and Hg²⁺ in the micromolar range. This work demonstrates how sensing outcomes are affected by modulating proton acidity by introducing an electron donating group, -NEt₂ , in the probe backbone. Interestingly, the un-substituted probe HQS can selectively detect F^- , whereas HQSN and QBN are selective for Hg²⁺ . In order to gain insights into the mechanism of sensing, geometry optimizations have been carried out on QS^(-1) , QS^(-1) ⋅⋅⋅HF, QSN^(-1) and QSN^(-1) ⋅⋅⋅HF and the experimental data are validated in terms of free energy and pK_a values. Detailed DFT and TD-DFT analyses provide ample support towards the mechanism of sensing of the analytes.

A quinoxaline-diaminomaleonitrile conjugate system for colorimetric detection of Cu2+ in 100% aqueous medium: observation of aldehyde to acid transformation

In this work, we have strategically incorporated a quinoxaline derivative and a diaminomaleonitrile moiety to construct a chemosensor, 2-amino-3-[(quinoxalin-2-ylmethylene)-amino]-but-2-enedinitrile (H2qm). The notable feature of this strategy is to generate a highly conjugated Schiff base platform with interesting binding properties. Remarkably, H2qm exhibited a visual sensing ability towards Cu2+ in 100% aqueous medium. The effectiveness of the chemosensor has been demonstrated by utilizing it to determine the Cu2+ concentration in real samples. Interestingly, the reaction between H2qm and Cu(ClO4)2·6H2O in DMSO yielded a quinoxaline-2-carboxylic acid based compound and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis unveiled the resulting structure as [(qa)2Cu(H2O)2] (Hqa = quinoxaline-2-carboxylic acid).

Visual detection of fluoride ion based on ICT mechanism

A novel chemosensor (H₃NTS) has been designed for a fast and accurate detection of F^- in acetonitrile medium. The UV-Vis, ¹H, ¹³C NMR experiments and computational calculations demonstrate that H₃NTS probe offers a potential colorimetric sensor for discriminating F^- among other relevant anions. The detection limit is as low as 6 μM and a reversible colorimetric switch could be devised by sequential addition of F^-/Ca²⁺. The promising application of H₃NTS is also confirmed in real examples where the concentration of F^- is a critical parameter, e.g., commercial toothpaste, paper strip and gel form analysis of samples.

Solvatochromism and pH effect on the emission of a triphenylimidazole-phenylacrylonitrile derivative: experimental and DFT studies

In this work, a study of the photophysical properties in different solvents and at different pH values of a luminogenic compound with a donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) structure was carried out. The compound (Z)-3-(4-(4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)phenyl)-2-phenylacrylonitrile (2) was synthesized and characterized by SCXRD, FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, EIMS, UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence. The SCXRD characterization reveals a monoclinic system, P21/c, with Z = 4 and an imidazole core having hydrogen bonding with respect to water molecules present in the asymmetric unit. It leads to a strong π-π-interaction in the solid state. The fluorescence λ max emission of the powder and thin film was observed at 563 nm and 540 nm respectively. Several degrees of positive solvatochromic fluorescence were observed due to different molecular conformations in various solvents. When the pH of the compound was changed with HCl or NaOH, a shift in the wavelength of emission was observed in a reversible manner. At pH 2, the λ max of emission was at 541 nm whereas at pH 14 there were two emissions at 561 nm and 671 nm. Due to their good emission in the solid state, compound 2 was tested as an emitting layer in OLEDs; the devices showed an acceptable performance with a luminance average of 450 cd m-2. The band gap was analyzed by optical absorption, cyclic voltammetry measurement and DFT calculations.

We herein reported the synthesis and pH sensing property of a novel gallium corrole derivatives based on 8-hydroxyquinoline. Ga-corrole derivative showed good fluorescent response upon changing the pH values in the wide region of pH 1 to 12.
