Tris-{Hydridotris(1-pyrazolyl)borato}lanthanide Complexes: Synthesis, Spectroscopy, Crystal Structure and Bonding Properties

Complexes of trivalent lanthanides (Ln) with the hydridotris(1-pyrazolyl)borato (Tp) ligand Ln[η3-HB(N2C3H3)3]3 (LnTp3) were subjected to a joint experimental–theoretical analysis. X-ray diffraction experiments have been performed on CeTp3, NdTp3, SmTp3, GdTp3, and TbTp3 in the nine-fold coordination and on DyTp3, HoTp3, ErTp3, TmTp3, YbTp3, and LuTp3 in the eight-fold coordination form. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out for all 15 LnTp3 complexes. They extended the X-ray diffraction data available on the LnTp3 compounds and facilitated a straightforward interpretation of trends in the structural parameters. As a result of the joint analysis, significant steric strain in the equatorial coordination sites of the nine-coordinate structures was recognized. Trends in the bonding properties were elucidated by energy decomposition and quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analysis of the electron density distribution. These results revealed the major electrostatic character of the Ln…Tp bonding and fine variation of charge transfer effects across the Ln row.

Electronic structures and bonding of the actinide halides An(TRENTIPS)X (An = Th-Pu; X = F-I): a theoretical perspective

To evaluate how halogen and actinide atoms affect the electronic structures and bonding nature, we have theoretically investigated a series of the actinide halides An(TRENTIPS)X (An = Th-Pu; X = F-I); several of them have been synthesized by Liddle's group. The An-X bond distances decrease from An = Th to Pu for the same halides, and the harmonic vibrational frequencies for the An-X bonds are more susceptible to being affected by the halogen atoms. The analyses of bonding nature reveal that the An-X bonds have a certain covalency with a polarized character, and the σ-bonding component in the total orbital contribution is greatly larger than the corresponding π-bonding ones based on the analysis of the NOCVs (the natural orbitals for chemical valence). Furthermore, the electronic structures of the thorium complexes are obviously different from those of the uranium and transuranic analogues due to more valence electrons in Th 6d orbitals. In addition, thermodynamic results suggest that the U(TRENTIPS)Br complex is the most stable and U(TRENTIPS)Cl has the highest reactivity based on the halide exchange reaction of U(TRENTIPS)X complexes using Me3SiX. The reduction ability of the tetravalent An(TRENTIPS)X is sensitive to halogen atoms according to the calculated electron affinity of the An(TRENTIPS)X and the reactions An(TRENTIPS)X + K → An(TRENTIPS) + KX. This work presents the effect of the halogen and the actinide atoms on the structures, bonding nature and redox ability of a series of the tetravalent actinide halides with TREN ligand and facilitates our in-depth understanding of f-block elements, which could provide theoretical guidance for experimental work on actinide halides, especially for the synthetic chemistry of transuranic halides.

Series of Tetravalent Actinide Amidinates: Structure Determination and Bonding Analysis

Two series of isostructural tetravalent actinide amidinates [AnX((S)-PEBA)₃] (An = Th, U, Np; X = Cl, N₃) bearing the chiral (S,S)-N,N'-bis(1-phenylethyl)benzamidinate ((S)-PEBA) ligand have been synthesized and thoroughly characterized in solid and in solution. This study expands the already reported tetravalent neptunium complexes to the lighter actinides thorium and uranium. Furthermore, a rare Ce(IV) amidinate [CeCl((S)-PEBA)₃] was synthesized to compare its properties to those of the analogous tetravalent actinide complexes. All compounds were characterized in the solid state using single-crystal XRD and infrared spectroscopy and in solution using NMR spectroscopy. Quantum chemical bonding analysis including also the isostructural Pa and Pu complexes was used to characterize the covalent contributions to any bond involving the metal cation. Th shows the least covalent character throughout the series, even substantially smaller than for the Ce complex. For U, Np, and Pu, similar covalent bonding contributions are found, but a natural population analysis reveals different origins. The 6d participation is the highest for U and decreases afterward, whereas the 5f participation increases continuously from Pa to Pu.

Theoretical Study of Actinide Complexes with Macropa

The complex formation of actinium (Ac³⁺) and californium (Cf³⁺) ions with macropa (a promising ligand for medical applications, e.g., in targeted α therapy) has been studied by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work is focused on the structural and bonding properties, the latter on the basis of charge transfer data and topological properties of the electron density distribution. The effect of water solvent on the energetics has been investigated using the SMD model. A comparative analysis with the related properties of two representative lanthanide (La, Lu) complexes has been performed.

The isostructural compounds of the trivalent actinides uranium, neptunium, plutonium, americium, and curium with the hydridotris(1-pyrazolyl)borato (Tp) ligand An[η3 -HB(N2 C3 H3 )3 ]3 (AnTp3 ) have been obtained through several synthetic routes. Structural, spectroscopic (absorption, infrared, laser fluorescence) and magnetic characterisation of the compounds were performed in combination with crystal field, density functional theory (DFT) and relativistic multiconfigurational calculations. The covalent bonding interactions were analysed in terms of the natural bond orbital (NBO) and quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) models.

Multiple Bonding in Lanthanides and Actinides: Direct Comparison of Covalency in Thorium(IV)- and Cerium(IV)-Imido Complexes

A series of thorium(IV)-imido complexes was synthesized and characterized. Extensive experimental and computational comparisons with the isostructural cerium(IV)-imido complexes revealed a notably more covalent bonding arrangement for the Ce═N bond compared with the more ionic Th═N bond. The thorium-imido moieties were observed to be 3 orders of magnitude more basic than their cerium congeners. More generally, these results provide unique experimental evidence for the larger covalent character of 4f⁰5d⁰ Ce(IV) multiple bonds compared to its 5f⁰6d⁰ Th(IV) actinide congener.

Emergence of the structure-directing role of f-orbital overlap-driven covalency

FEUDAL (f’s essentially unaffected, d’s accommodate ligands) is a longstanding bonding model in actinide chemistry, in which metal-ligand binding uses 6d-orbitals, with the 5f remaining non-bonding. The inverse-trans-influence (ITI) is a case where the model may break down, and it has been suggested that ionic and covalent effects work synergistically in the ITI. Here, we report an experimentally grounded computational study that quantitatively explores the ITI, and in particular the structure-directing role of f-orbital covalency. Strong donor ligands generate a cis-ligand-directing electrostatic potential (ESP) at the metal centre. When f-orbital participation, via overlap-driven covalency, becomes dominant via short actinide-element distances, this ionic ESP effect is overcome, favouring a trans-ligand-directed geometry. This study contradicts the accepted ITI paradigm in that here ionic and covalent effects work against each other, and suggests a clearly non-FEUDAL, structure-directing role for the f-orbitals.

In actinide chemistry, a longstanding bonding model describes metal-ligand binding using 6d-orbitals, with the 5f-orbitals remaining non-bonding. Here the authors explore the inverse-trans-influence — a case where the model breaks down — finding that the f-orbitals play a crucial role in dictating a trans-ligand-directed geometry.

Binding affinity of pyridines with AmIII/CmIII elucidated by density functional theory calculations

In recent decades, N-heterocyclic ligands have been extensively used in the separation of lanthanides/actinides, whereas the selective extraction of amercium or curium has been very challenging. Using density functional theory calculations, this study is devoted to the investigation of the binding affinity of a series of modelling pyridine ligands with Am^III and Cm^III. The structure-property correlations between the amercium and curium systems and the binding affinity were obtained, and promising strategies for efficient separation of Am^III/Cm^III were proposed.
