A porous cobalt(II)-organic framework exhibiting high room temperature proton conductivity and field-induced slow magnetic relaxation

A two-dimensional (2D) cobalt(II) metal-organic framework (MOF) constructed by a ditopic organic ligand, formulated as {[Co(Hbic)(H₂O)]·4H₂O}_n (1) (H₂bic = 1H-benzimidazole-5-carboxylic acid), was hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction shows that the distorted octahedral Co²⁺ ions, as coordination nodes, are bridged to form 2D honeycomb networks, which are further organized into a 3D supramolecular porous framework through multiple hydrogen bonds and interlayer π-π interactions. Dynamic crystallography experiments reveal the anisotropic thermal expansion behavior of the lattice, suggesting a flexible hydrogen-bonded 3D framework. Interestingly, hydrogen-bonded (H₂O)₄ tetramers were found to be located in porous channels, yielding 1D proton transport pathways. As a result, the compound exhibited a high room-temperature proton conductivity of 1.6 × 10^-4 S cm^-1 under a relative humidity of 95% through a Grotthuss mechanism. Magnetic investigations combined with theoretical calculations reveal giant easy-plane magnetic anisotropy of the distorted octahedral Co²⁺ ions with the experimental and computed D values being 87.1 and 109.3 cm^-1, respectively. In addition, the compound exhibits field-induced slow magnetic relaxation behavior at low temperatures with an effective energy barrier of U_eff = 45.2 cm^-1. Thus, the observed electrical and magnetic properties indicate a rare proton conducting SIM-MOF. The foregoing results provide a unique bifunctional cobalt(II) framework material and suggest a promising way to achieve magnetic and electrical properties using a supramolecular framework platform.

Self-assembly of fish-bone and grid-like CoII-based single-molecule magnets using dihydrazone ligands with NNN and NNO pockets

Three Co^II complexes, [Co₂(H₂L¹)₂](ClO₄)₄·4CH₃OH (1), [Co₂(H₄L²)₂](ClO₄)₄ (2) and [Co₄(H₄L²)₄](ClO₄)₈ (3), were constructed by the self-assembly of the symmetrical dihydrazone ligands H2L1 and H4L2 with Co^II ions under different synthetic conditions. The fish-bone-like complex 1 was obtained using the ligand H2L1 in methanol via the solvothermal method, while the self-assembly of H4L2 with Co^II ions is solvent-dependent, producing the fish-bone-like complex 2 and [2 × 2] grid-like complex 3. Magnetic susceptibility measurements and theoretical calculations reveal that the large negative D values for the three complexes stem from their easy-axis magnetic anisotropy. Ac magnetic susceptibility measurements disclosed field-induced slow magnetic relaxation behaviors and the presence of Raman and/or direct processes of the three complexes at various applied dc fields.

Field-Induced Single Molecule Magnetic Behavior of Mononuclear Cobalt(II) Schiff Base Complex Derived from 5-Bromo Vanillin

A mononuclear Co(II) complex of a Schiff base ligand derived from 5-Bromo-vanillin and 4-aminoantipyrine, that has a compressed tetragonal bipyramidal geometry and exhibiting field-induced slow magnetic relaxation, has been synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis and molecular spectroscopy. In the crystal packing, a hydrogen-bonded dimer structural topology has been observed with two distinct metal centers having slightly different bond parameters. The complex has been further investigated for its magnetic nature on a SQUID magnetometer. The DC magnetic data confirm that the complex behaves as a typical S = 3/2 spin system with a sizable axial zero-field splitting parameter D/hc = 38 cm−1. The AC susceptibility data reveal that the relaxation time for the single-mode relaxation process is τ = 0.16(1) ms at T = 2.0 K and BDC = 0.12 T.

Effect of Ligand Chain Length for Tuning of Molecular Dimensionality and Magnetic Relaxation in Redox Active Cobalt(II) EDOT Complexes (EDOT = 3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene)

Four cobalt(II) complexes, [Co(L1)2(NCX)2(MeOH)2] (X = S (1), Se (2)) and {[Co(L2)2(NCX)2]}n (X = S (3), Se (4)) (L1 = 2,5dipyridyl-3,4,-ethylenedioxylthiophene and L2 = 2,5diethynylpyridinyl-3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), were synthesized by incorporating ethylenedioxythiophene based redox-active luminescence ligands. All these complexes have been well characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, spectroscopic and magnetic investigations. Magneto-structural studies showed that 1 and 2 adopt a mononuclear structure with CoN4O2 octahedral coordination geometry while 3 and 4 have a 2D [4 x 4] rhombic grid coordination networks (CNs) where each cobalt(II) center is in a CoN6 octahedral coordination environment. Static magnetic measurements reveal that all four complexes displayed a high spin (HS) (S = 3/2) state between 2 and 280 K which was further confirmed by X-band and Q-band EPR studies. Remarkably, along with the molecular dimensionality (0D and 2D) the modification in the axial coligands lead to a significant difference in the dynamic magnetic properties of the monomers and CNs at low temperatures. All complexes display slow magnetic relaxation behavior under an external dc magnetic field. For the complexes with NCS- as coligand observed higher energy barrier for spin reversal in comparison to the complexes with NCSe- as coligand, while mononuclear complex 1 exhibited a higher energy barrier than that of CN 3. Theoretical calculations at the DFT and CASSCF level of theory have been performed to get more insight into the electronic structure and magnetic properties of all four complexes.

Trigonally Distorted Hexacoordinate Co(II) Single-Ion Magnets

By simple reactions involving various cobalt(II) carboxylates (acetate and in situ prepared pivalate and 4-hydroxybenzoate salts) and neocuproine (neo), we were able to prepare three different carboxylate complexes with the general formula [Co(neo)(RCOO)₂] (R = –CH₃ for 1, (CH₃)₃C– for 2, and 4OH-C₄H₆– for 3). The [Co(neo)(RCOO)₂] molecules in the crystal structures of 1–3 adopt a rather distorted coordination environment, with the largest trigonal distortion observed for 1, whereas 2 and 3 are similarly distorted from ideal octahedral geometry. The combined theoretical and experimental investigations of magnetic properties revealed that the spin Hamiltonian formalism was not a valid approach and the L-S Hamiltonian had to be used to reveal very large magnetic anisotropies for 1–3. The measurements of AC susceptibility showed that all three compounds exhibited slow-relaxation of magnetization in a weak external static magnetic field, and thus can be classified as field-induced single-ion magnets. It is noteworthy that 1 also exhibits a weak AC signal in a zero-external magnetic field.

Field-induced single ion magnet behaviour of discrete and one-dimensional complexes containing [bis(1-methylimidazol-2-yl)ketone]-cobalt(II) building units

We describe herein the first examples of six-coordinate Co^II single-ion magnets (SIMs) based on the β-diimine ^Mebik ligand [^Mebik = bis(1-methylimidazol-2-yl)ketone]: two mononuclear [Co^II(^Rbik)₂L₂] complexes and one mixed-valence {CoIII2Co^II}_n chain of formulas [Co^II(^Mebik)(H₂O)(dmso)(μ-NC)₂CoIII2(μ-2,5-dpp)(CN)₆]_n·1.4nH₂O (3) [L = NCS (1), NCSe (2) and 2,5-dpp = 2,5-bis(2-pyridyl)pyrazine (3)]. Two bidentate ^Mebik molecules plus two monodentate N-coordinated pseudohalide groups in cis positions build somewhat distorted octahedral surroundings around the high-spin cobalt(II) ions in 1 and 2. The diamagnetic [CoIII2(μ-2,5-dpp)(CN)₈]^2- metalloligand coordinates the paramagnetic [Co^II(^Mebik)(H₂O)(dmso)]²⁺ complex cations in a bis-monodentate fashion to afford neutral zigzag heterobimetallic chains in 3. Ab initio calculations, and cryomagnetic dc (2.0-300 K) and ac (2.0-12 K) measurements as well as EPR spectroscopy for 1-3 show the existence of magnetically isolated high-spin cobalt(II) ions with D values of 59.84-89.90 (1), 66.32-93.90 (2) and 70.40-127.20 cm^-1 (3) and field-induced slow relaxation of the magnetization, being thus new examples of SIMs with transversal magnetic anisotropy. The analysis of their relaxation dynamics reveals that the relaxation of the magnetization occurs by the Raman (with values of the n parameter covering the range 6.0-6.8) and direct spin-phonon processes.

A systematic study of the influence of ligand field on the slow magnetic dynamics of Co(ii)-diimine compounds

Herein we report heteroleptic Co(ii) diimine complexes [Co(H₂bip)₂Cl₂] (1), [Co(H₂bip)₂Br₂] (2), [Co(H₂bip)₃]Br₂·1MeOH (3) and [Co(H₂bip)₂(Me₂bpy)]Br₂·(MeCN)_0.5·(H₂O)_0.25 (4) (H₂bip = 2,2'-bi-1,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidine, bpy = 2,2'-dipyridyl, Me₂bpy = 4,4'-Me-2,2'-dipyridyl), purposefully prepared to enable a systematic study of magnetic property changes arising from the increase of overall ligand field from σ/π-donor chlorido (1) to π-acceptor 4,4'Me-2,2'bpy (4). The presence of axial and rhombic anisotropy (D and E) of these compounds is sufficient to allow 1-4 to show field-induced slow relaxation of magnetization. Interestingly, we found as the effective ligand field is increased in the series, rhombicity (E/D) decreases, and the magnetic relaxation profile changes significantly, where relaxation of magnetization at a specific temperature becomes gradually faster. We performed mechanistic analyses of the temperature dependence of magnetic relaxation times considering Orbach relaxation processes, Raman-like relaxation and quantum tunnelling of magnetization (QTM). The effective energy barrier of the Orbach relaxation process (U_eff) is largest in compound 1 (19.2 cm^-1) and gradually decreases in the order 1 > 2 > 3 > 4 giving a minimum value in compound 4 (8.3 cm^-1), where the Raman-like mechanism showed the possibility of different types of phonon activity below and above ∼2.5 K. As a precursor of 1, the tetrahedral complex [Co(H₂bip)Cl₂] (1a) was also synthesized and structurally and magnetically characterized: this compound exhibits slow relaxation of magnetization under an applied dc field (1800 Oe) with a record slow relaxation time of 3.39 s at 1.8 K.

Alignment of axial anisotropy of a mononuclear hexa-coordinated Co(ii) complex in a lattice shows improved single molecule magnetic behavior over a 2D coordination polymer having a similar ligand field

The parallel orientation of the anisotropic axes minimizes the transverse component and slow down the relaxation process and results in a higher energy barrier in 0D complex as compared to 2D framework where anisotropic axes are randomly oriented.

Single molecule magnets of cobalt and zinc homo- and heterometallic coordination polymers prepared by a one-step synthetic procedure

The synthesis of 1D cobalt and zinc monometallic and heterometallic coordination polymers (CPs) was carried out applying one-pot synthetic methods by using either supercritical carbon dioxide or ethanol as the solvent. A collection of four 1D CPs were thus obtained by the combination of a metal (or a mixture of metals) with the linker 1,4-bis(4-pyridylmethyl)benzene. The used metallic complexes were zinc and cobalt hexafluoroacetylacetonate, which can easily incorporate pyridine ligands in the coordination sphere of the metal centre. Independently of the used solvent, the precipitated phases involving Zn(ii), i.e., homometallic CP of Zn(ii) and bimetallic CP of Zn(ii)/Co(ii), were isostructural. Contrarily, homometallic CPs of Co(ii) were precipitated as an isostructural phase of Zn(ii) or with a different structure, depending on the used solvent. All the structures were resolved by XRD using synchrotron radiation. In addition, the magnetic properties of the new CPs involving Co(ii) were studied. Remarkably, at low temperatures with the application of an external field, they acted as field-induced single molecule magnets.

One-pot synthesis of heterometallic (Zn(ii)/Co(ii)) nodes directing CP magnetic behaviour to single molecule magnets.

X-ray Structure and Magnetic Properties of Heterobimetallic Chains Based on the Use of an Octacyanidodicobalt(III) Complex as Metalloligand

The assembly of [Co2III(μ-2,5-dpp)(CN)8]2− anions and [MII(CH3OH)2(DMSO)2]2+ cations resulted into the formation of two heterobimetallic 1D coordination polymers of formula [MII(CH3OH)2(DMSO)2(μ-NC)2Co2III(μ-2,5-dpp)(CN)6]n·4nCH3OH [M = CoII (1)/FeII (2) and 2,5-dpp = 2,5-bis(2-pyridyl)pyrazine. The [Co2III(μ-2,5-dpp)(CN)8]2− metalloligand coordinates the paramagnetic [MII(CH3OH)2(DMSO)2]2+ complex cations, in a bis-monodentate fashion, to give rise to neutral heterobimetallic chains. Cryomagnetic dc (1.9–300 K) and ac (2.0–13 K) magnetic measurements for 1 and 2 show the presence of Co(II)HS (1) and Fe(II)HS (2) ions (HS – high-spin), respectively, with D values of +53.7(5) (1) and −5.1(3) cm−1 (2) and slow magnetic relaxation for 1, this compound being a new example of SIM with transversal magnetic anisotropy. Low-temperature Q-band EPR study of 1 confirms that D value is positive, which reveals the occurrence of a strong asymmetry in the g-tensors and allows a rough estimation of the E/D ratio, whereas 2 is EPR silent. Theoretical calculations by CASSCF/NEVPT2 on 1 and 2 support the results from magnetometry and EPR. The analysis of the ac magnetic measurements of 1 shows that the relaxation of M takes place in the ground state under external magnetic dc fields through dominant Raman and direct spin-phonon processes.

Field-induced slow magnetic relaxation in mixed valence di- and tri-nuclear CoII-CoIII complexes

Two novel mixed valence Co^II-Co^III complexes, namely [Co^IICo^III(L1)(ab)(mb)₂(H₂O)]·dmf (1) and [CoCo^II(L2)₄(H₂O)₄]·2H₂O (2) [H₂L1 = (E)-2-((1-hydroxybutan-2-ylimino)methyl)-6-methoxyphenol, ab = 2-amino-butan-1-ol anion, mb = p-methyl benzoate, H₂L2 = 3-((2-hydroxy-3-methoxy-benzylidene)-amino)-propionic acid, and dmf = N,N-dimethyl-formamide], were synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction and magnetic studies at low temperature. The structure determination reveals that both complexes belong to the monoclinic system with P21/c (1) and I2/a (2) space groups. Complex 1 is a dinuclear Co^IIICo^II compound with distorted octahedral cobalt centers showing different coordination environments. In 2, a bent trinuclear CoCo^II complex, the coordination environments around the two terminal Co^III sites are alike, whereas they are different in the central Co^II ion. Alternating current/direct current (ac/dc) magnetic studies revealed that both complexes show field-induced slow magnetic relaxation. The dc magnetic susceptibility and magnetization data were analyzed with the following Hamiltonianwhere D and E are the axial and rhombic zero-field splitting (zfs) parameters, respectively, and a good agreement between experimental and simulated results was found using the parameters g_⊥ = 2.585, g_∥ = 2.437, D = +98.1 cm^-1, E/D = 0.008 and F = 8.2× 10^-5 for 1 and g_⊥ = 2.580, g_∥ = 2.580, D = +55.4 cm^-1, and E/D = 0.000 for 2.

Coordination polymers of a bis-isophthalate bridging ligand with single molecule magnet behaviour of the CoII analogue

A linear diamine-bisisophthalate bridging linker N,N'-bis(1,3-dicarboxyphenyl-5-methylene)-1,3-dimethylpropanediamine, designed to incorporate amine/ammonium functionalities in the core of the ligand, has been isolated as the pentahydrate of its dihydrochloride salt (H6L)Cl2·5H2O. Using this compound, four new coordination polymers have been formed, namely poly-[M(H2L)]·4.5H2O (1M, where M = Co, Zn, Cd) and poly-[Cd(H2L)(OH2)]·DMF·7H2O (2). Compounds 1M are isostructural 2D coordination polymers that contain 1D channels occupied by water molecules. In the case of 1Co these form a well ordered hydrogen-bonding network as determined by single crystal X-ray studies. Compound 2, synthesised under similar conditions, is a 1D coordination polymer in which the metal is partially solvated. DC and AC magnetic studies of 1Co, which posseses a mononuclear cobalt(ii) node, revealed single molecule magnet behaviour (SMM) with an effective barrier height Ueff of 37.7 K and τ0 = 1.02 × 10-9 s, among the highest reported for CoII coordination polymers.

Coligand Effects on the Field-Induced Double Slow Magnetic Relaxation in Six-Coordinate Cobalt(II) Single-Ion Magnets (SIMs) with Positive Magnetic Anisotropy

Two mononuclear cobalt(II) compounds of formula [Co(dmphen)₂(OOCPh)]ClO₄·1/2H₂O·1/2CH₃OH (1) and [Co(dmbipy)₂(OOCPh)]ClO₄ (2) (dmphen = 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline, dmbipy = 6,6'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine and HOOCPh = benzoic acid) are prepared and magnetostructurally investigated. Each cobalt(II) ion is six-coordinate with a distorted octahedral CoN₄O₂ environment. The complex cations are interlinked leading to supramolecular chains (1) and pairs (2) that grow along the crystallographic c-axis with racemic mixtures of (Δ,Λ)-Co units. FIRMS allowed us to directly measure the zero-field splitting between the two lowest Kramers doublets, which led to axial anisotropy values of 58.3 cm^-1 ≤ D < 60.7 cm^-1 (1) and 63.8 cm^-1 ≤ D < 64.1 cm^-1 (2). HFEPR spectra of polycrystalline samples of 1 and 2 at low temperatures confirm the positive sign of D and provide an estimate of the E/D quotient [0.147/0.187 (1) and 0.052 (2)]. Detailed ac and dc magnetic studies reveal that 1 and 2 are new examples of field-induced single-ion magnets (SIMs) with small transversal anisotropy. CASSCF/NEVPT2 calculations support these results. Two Orbach processes or one Orbach plus a direct relaxation mechanism provide similar agreements with the nonlinear experimental Arrhenius plots at H_dc = 500 and 2500 G for 1. Two independent relaxation processes occur in 2, but in contrast to 1, an observed linear dependence of ln(τ) vs 1/T substantiates Orbach processes against the most widely proposed Raman and direct mechanisms. The analysis of each relaxation process in 2 provided values for E_a and τ₀ that are very close to those found for 1, validating the predominant role of the Orbach relaxations in both compounds and, probably, also in other cobalt(II) SIMs. A mechanism based on a spin-phonon coupling is proposed to account for the SIM behavior in 1 and 2 with any Raman or direct processes being discarded.

Influence of the pyrazine substituent on the structure and magnetic properties of dicyanamide-bridged cobalt(ii) complexes

Substituted pyrazines were successfully used to prepare two new coordination polymers of formulas {[Co(dca)2(NH2pyz)2]·H2O}n (1) and [Co3(dca)6(HOpyz)5(H2O)2]n (2) [dca = dicyanamide, NH2pyz = 2-aminopyrazine and HOpyz = 2-hydroxypyrazine] whose structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The structure of 1 consists of a two-dimensional rhombus grid of cobalt(ii) ions where the dca ligand adopts the μ1,5 bridging mode with trans-positioned monodentate NH2pyz molecules completing the six-coordination around each metal ion. Compound 2 exhibits a stair-like two-dimensional structure where the intralayer connections are performed by the dca and HOpyz groups exhibiting μ1,5 and bis-monodentate coordination modes, respectively. The values of the cobalt-cobalt separation through the dca bridges are 8.2107(3) (1) and 8.4746(4) and 8.5249(4) Å (2) whereas the value through the hydroxypyrazine is 7.2052(6) Å (2). Solid-state direct-current magnetic susceptibility analyses in the temperature range of 1.9-300 K for 1 and 2 reveal the occurrence of magnetically isolated high-spin cobalt(ii) ions with a significant contribution to the magnetic moment (1 and 2), D = +95.4 (1) and +76.5 cm-1 (2) and the antiferromagnetically coupled pairs of cobalt(ii) centres through the bis-monodentate 2-hydroxypyrazine, J = -0.3 cm-1 (2). Both compounds exhibit frequency dependence of the out-of-phase alternating current (ac) magnetic susceptibility (χ''M) under non-zero applied dc fields, a feature which is characteristic of single-ion magnet behaviour (SIM). Q-band EPR studies on the polycrystalline samples of 1 and 2 at low temperatures confirm the positive sign of D and reveal the occurrence of a strong asymmetry in the g-tensors. Theoretical calculations by CASSCF/NEVPT2 support these results. An analysis of the dynamic behaviour of 1 and 2 suggests that the relaxation of the magnetization occurs in the ground state under applied fields through two Orbach processes possibly bound to low-lying vibrational modes in the high temperature range, and to the slowing down of the fast interconversion between the two contributions of the ground Kramers doublet at lower temperatures induced by the applied dc field.

Phosphine Oxide Ligand Based Tetrahedral CoII Complexes with Field-induced Slow Magnetic Relaxation Behavior Modified by Terminal Ligands

Two isostructural mononuclear Co^II complexes, [Co(xantpo)(NCE)₂ ] (E=S (1) and O (2); xantpo=9,9-dimethyl-4,5-bis(diphenylphosphoryl) xanthene), supported by a bidentate phosphine oxide ligand are reported. The cobalt complexes exhibit characteristic tetrahedral structures coordinated with two oxygen and two nitrogen atoms. Magnetic property measurements show their similar static magnetic behaviours but very different dynamic magnetic behaviours. Both complexes show field-induced slow magnetic relaxation behaviours, but the relaxation of 2 is much slower than that of 1. Fittings to the magnetic data and ab initio CASSCF calculations reveal significant changes in the zero field splitting (ZFS) parameters (D and E), which can be attributed to the small geometrical changes of the Co ions and the different ligand field strength of the two terminal ligands.

Dinuclear CoIIYIIIvs. tetranuclear CoII2YIII2 complexes: the effect of increasing molecular size on magnetic anisotropy and relaxation dynamics

The lower distortion of the Co^II ions in the new tetranuclear CoII2YIII2 complex leads to a larger magnetic anisotropy than in its Co^IIY^III counterparts, whereas its larger size and flexibility seem to promote a faster relaxation dynamic.
