Structure and IR Spectroscopic Properties of HNCO Complexes with SO2 Isolated in Solid Argon

FTIR spectroscopy was combined with the matrix isolation technique and quantum chemical calculations with the aim of studying complexes of isocyanic acid with sulfur dioxide. The structures of the HNCO⋯SO₂ complexes of 1:1, 1:2 and 2:1 stoichiometry were optimized at the MP2, B3LYPD3, B2PLYPD3 levels of theory with the 6-311++G(3df,3pd) basis set. Five stable 1:1 HNCO⋯SO₂ complexes were found. Three of them contain a weak N-H⋯O hydrogen bond, whereas two other structures are stabilized by van der Waals interactions. The analysis of the HNCO/SO₂/Ar spectra after deposition indicates that mostly the 1:1 hydrogen-bonded complexes are present in argon matrices, with a small amount of the van der Waals structures. Upon annealing, complexes of the 1:2 stoichiometry were detected, as well.

How to VPT2: Accurate and Intuitive Simulations of CH Stretching Infrared Spectra Using VPT2+K with Large Effective Hamiltonian Resonance Treatments

This article primarily discusses the utility of vibrational perturbation theory for the prediction of X-H stretching vibrations with particular focus on the specific variant, second-order vibrational perturbation theory with resonances (VPT2+K). It is written as a tutorial, reprinting most important formulas and providing numerous simple examples. It discusses the philosophy and practical considerations behind vibrational simulations with VPT2+K, including but not limited to computational method selection, cost-saving approximations, approaches to evaluating intensity, resonance identification, and effective Hamiltonian structure. Particular attention is given to resonance treatments, beginning with simple Fermi dyads and gradually progressing to arbitrarily large polyads that describe both Fermi and Darling-Dennison resonances. VPT2+K combined with large effective Hamiltonians is shown to be a reliable framework for modeling the complicated CH stretching spectra of alkenes. An error is also corrected in the published analytic formula for the VPT2 transition moment between the vibrational ground state and triply excited states.

Ab initio potential energy surface and microwave spectrum of the NH3-N2 van der Waals complex

We present a five-dimensional intermolecular potential energy surface (PES) of the NH₃-N₂ complex, bound state calculations, and new microwave (MW) measurements that provide information on the structure of this complex and a critical test of the potential. Ab initio calculations were carried out using the explicitly correlated coupled cluster [CCSD(T)-F12a] approach with the augmented correlation-consistent aug-cc-pVTZ basis set. The global minimum of the PES corresponds to a configuration in which the angle between the NH₃ symmetry axis and the intermolecular axis is 58.7° with the N atom of the NH₃ unit closest to the N₂ unit, which is nearly parallel to the NH₃ symmetry axis. The intermolecular distance is 7.01 a₀, and the binding energy D_e is 250.6 cm^-1. The bound rovibrational levels of the four nuclear spin isomers of the complex, which are formed when ortho/para (o/p)-NH₃ combines with (o/p)-N₂, were calculated on this intermolecular potential surface. The computed dissociation energies D₀ are 144.91 cm^-1, 146.50 cm^-1, 152.29 cm^-1, and 154.64 cm^-1 for (o)-NH₃-(o)-N₂, (o)-NH₃-(p)-N₂, (p)-NH₃-(o)-N₂, and (p)-NH₃-(p)-N₂, respectively. Guided by these calculations, the pure rotational transitions of the NH₃-N₂ van der Waals complex were observed in the frequency range of 13-27 GHz using the chirped-pulse Fourier-transform MW technique. A complicated hyperfine structure due to three quadrupole ¹⁴N nuclei was partly resolved and examined for all four nuclear spin isomers of the complex. Newly obtained data definitively established the K values (the projection of the angular momentum J on the intermolecular axis) for the lowest states of the different NH₃-N₂ nuclear spin isomers.

Complexes of Glycolic Acid with Nitrogen Isolated in Argon Matrices. I. Structures and Thermal Effects

Molecular complexes between glycolic acid and nitrogen were studied in a low-temperature argon matrix with FTIR spectroscopy, and supported by MP2 and BLYPD3 calculations. The calculations indicate 11 and 10 stable complex structures at the MP2 and BLYPD3 levels of theories, respectively. However, only one hydrogen-bonded complex structure involving the most stable SSC conformer of glycolic acid was found experimentally, where the nitrogen molecule is bound with the carboxylic OH group of the SSC conformer. The complex shows a rich site structure variation upon deposition of the matrix in different temperatures and upon annealing experiments, which provide interesting prospects for site-selective chemistry.

Complexes of Glycolic Acid with Nitrogen Isolated in Argon Matrices. II. Vibrational Overtone Excitations

Structural changes of glycolic acid (GA) complex with nitrogen induced by selective overtone excitation of the νOH mode were followed in argon matrices using FTIR spectroscopy. For the most stable SSC1 complex present in different trapping sites directly upon deposition site, selective changes in the νOH region were achieved upon near-infrared irradiation. Simultaneously, new conformers of the GA…N₂ complex were formed, giving rise to several sets of bands in the νOH and νC=O regions of the spectra. Both position and intensity of new absorptions appeared to be highly sensitive on the wavelength of radiation used, as well as on the annealing of the matrix. Based on theoretical calculations at different levels of theory, an assignment of the observed bands is proposed and discussed.

Single-Hessian thawed Gaussian approximation

To alleviate the computational cost associated with on-the-fly ab initio semiclassical calculations of molecular spectra, we propose the single-Hessian thawed Gaussian approximation in which the Hessian of the potential energy at all points along an anharmonic classical trajectory is approximated by a constant matrix. The spectra obtained with this approximation are compared with the exact quantum spectra of a one-dimensional Morse potential and with the experimental spectra of ammonia and quinquethiophene. In all cases, the single-Hessian version performs almost as well as the much more expensive on-the-fly ab initio thawed Gaussian approximation and significantly better than the global harmonic schemes. Remarkably, unlike the thawed Gaussian approximation, the proposed method conserves energy exactly, despite the time dependence of the corresponding effective Hamiltonian, and, in addition, can be mapped to a higher-dimensional time-independent classical Hamiltonian system. We also provide a detailed comparison with several related approximations used for accelerating prefactor calculations in semiclassical simulations.
