Electronic spectroscopy and nanocalorimetry of hydrated magnesium ions [Mg(H2O)n]+, n = 20-70: spontaneous formation of a hydrated electron?

The Back Door to the Surface Hydrated Electron

We use a Mg+ metal to extend the size regime of aqueous clusters to extrapolate to the bulk limit of the vertical detachment energy (VDE) of the solvated electron to >3,200, a value between 1 to over 2 orders of magnitude larger than the one previously measured experimentally or computed theoretically. We relate the VDE to the energy difference between the Mg+(H2O)n and Mg2+(H2O)n systems and the metal's second ionization potential. The extrapolated bulk VDEs of the localized surface electron, which moves away from the metal as n increases, are 1.89 ± 0.01 eV for semiempirical (n ∼ 3,200; PM6-D3H4) and 1.73 ± 0.03 eV (n ∼ 150; HF) and 1.83 ± 0.02 eV (n ∼ 150; MP2) for ab initio, in excellent agreement with the 1.6-1.8 eV range of experimental results. The VDEs converge from above (larger values) to the bulk limit, in a manner that is qualitatively opposite from previous studies and experiments lacking a charged metal, a fact justifying the "back door" approach to the solvated electron.

Thermally Activated vs. Photochemical Hydrogen Evolution Reactions-A Tale of Three Metals

Molecular processes behind hydrogen evolution reactions can be quite complex. In macroscopic electrochemical cells, it is extremely difficult to elucidate and understand their mechanism. Gas phase models, consisting of a metal ion and a small number of water molecules, provide unique opportunities to understand the reaction pathways in great detail. Hydrogen evolution in clusters consisting of a singly charged metal ion and one to on the order of 50 water molecules has been studied extensively for magnesium, aluminum and vanadium. Such clusters with around 10-20 water molecules are known to eliminate atomic or molecular hydrogen upon mild activation by room temperature black-body radiation. Irradiation with ultraviolet light, by contrast, enables hydrogen evolution already with a single water molecule. Here, we analyze and compare the reaction mechanisms for hydrogen evolution on the ground state as well as excited state potential energy surfaces. Five distinct mechanisms for evolution of atomic or molecular hydrogen are identified and characterized.

Surface or Internal Hydration - Does It Really Matter?

The precise location of an ion or electron, whether it is internally solvated or residing on the surface of a water cluster, remains an intriguing question. Subtle differences in the hydrogen bonding network may lead to a preference for one or the other. Here we discuss spectroscopic probes of the structure of gas-phase hydrated ions in combination with quantum chemistry, as well as H/D exchange as a means of structure elucidation. With the help of nanocalorimetry, we look for thermochemical signatures of surface vs internal solvation. Examples of strongly size-dependent reactivity are reviewed which illustrate the influence of surface vs internal solvation on unimolecular rearrangements of the cluster, as well as on the rate and product distribution of ion-molecule reactions.

The bond strength and photodissociation dynamics of MgI⁺ are determined by a combination of theory, photodissociation spectroscopy, and photofragment velocity map imaging. From 17 000 to 21 500 cm^-1, the photodissociation spectrum of MgI⁺ is broad and unstructured; photofragment images in this region show perpendicular anisotropy, which is consistent with absorption to the repulsive wall of the (1) Ω = 1 or (2) Ω = 1 states followed by direct dissociation to ground state products Mg⁺ (²S) + I (²P_3/2). Analysis of photofragment images taken at photon energies near the threshold gives a bond dissociation energy D₀(Mg⁺-I) = 203.0 ± 1.8 kJ/mol (2.10 ± 0.02 eV; 17 000 ± 150 cm^-1). At photon energies of 33 000-41 000 cm^-1, exclusively I⁺ fragments are formed. Over most of this region, the formation of I⁺ is not energetically allowed via one-photon absorption from the ground state of MgI⁺. Images show the observed product is due to resonance enhanced two-photon dissociation. The photodissociation spectrum from 33 000 to 38 500 cm^-1 shows vibrational structure, giving an average excited state vibrational spacing of 227 cm^-1. This is consistent with absorption to the (3) Ω = 0⁺ state from ν = 0, 1 of the (1) Ω = 0⁺ ground state; from the (3) Ω = 0⁺ state, absorption of a second photon results in dissociation to Mg* (³P^° _J) + I⁺ (³P_J). From 38 500 to 41 000 cm^-1, the spectrum is broad and unstructured. We attribute this region of the spectrum to one-photon dissociation of vibrationally hot MgI⁺ at low energy and ground state MgI⁺ at higher energy to form Mg (¹S) + I⁺ (³P_J) products.

Size-dependent H and H2 formation by infrared multiple photon dissociation spectroscopy of hydrated vanadium cations, V+(H2O)n, n = 3-51

Infrared spectra of the hydrated vanadium cation (V⁺(H₂O)_n; n = 3–51) were measured in the O–H stretching region employing infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy. Spectral fingerprints, along with size-dependent fragmentation channels, were observed and rationalized by comparing to spectra simulated using density functional theory. Photodissociation leading to water loss was found for cluster sizes n = 3–7, consistent with isomers featuring intact water ligands. Loss of molecular hydrogen was observed as a weak channel starting at n = 8, indicating the advent of inserted isomers, HVOH⁺(H₂O)_n−1. The majority of ions for n = 8, however, are composed of two-dimensional intact isomers, concordant with previous infrared studies on hydrated vanadium. A third channel, loss of atomic hydrogen, is observed weakly for n = 9–11, coinciding with the point at which the H and H₂O calculated binding energies become energetically competitive for intact isomers. A clear and sudden spectral pattern and fragmentation channel intensity at n = 12 suggest a structural change to inserted isomers. The H₂ channel intensity decreases sharply and is not observed for n = 20 and 25–51. IRMPD spectra for clusters sizes n = 15–51 are qualitatively similar indicating no significant structural changes, and are thought to be composed of inserted isomers, consistent with recent electronic spectroscopy experiments.

Infrared multiple photon dissociation spectra of V⁺(H₂O)_n depend on experiment conditions, with strong kinetic shift effects for large clusters.

Infrared Multiple Photon Dissociation Spectroscopy Confirms Reversible Water Activation in Mn+(H2O)n, n ≤ 8

Controlled activation of water molecules is the key to efficient water splitting. Hydrated singly charged manganese ions Mn⁺(H₂O)_n exhibit a size-dependent insertion reaction, which is probed by infrared multiple photon dissociation spectroscopy (IRMPD) and FT-ICR mass spectrometry. The noninserted isomer of Mn⁺(H₂O)₄ is formed directly in the laser vaporization ion source, while its inserted counterpart HMnOH⁺(H₂O)₃ is selectively prepared by gentle removal of water molecules from larger clusters. The IRMPD spectra in the O-H stretch region of both systems are markedly different, and correlate very well with quantum chemical calculations of the respective species at the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVDZ//BHandHLYP/aug-cc-pVDZ level of theory. The calculated potential energy surface for water loss from HMnOH⁺(H₂O)₃ shows that this cluster ion is metastable. During IRMPD, the system rearranges back to the noninserted Mn⁺(H₂O)₃ structure, indicating that the inserted structure requires stabilization by hydration. The studied system serves as an atomically defined single-atom redox-center for reversible metal insertion into the O-H bond, a key step in metal-centered water activation.

Photochemical Hydrogen Evolution at Metal Centers Probed with Hydrated Aluminium Cations, Al+ (H2 O)n , n=1-10

Hydrated aluminium cations have been investigated as a photochemical model system with up to ten water molecules by UV action spectroscopy in a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometer. Intense photodissociation was observed starting at 4.5 eV for two to eight water molecules with loss of atomic hydrogen, molecular hydrogen and water molecules. Quantum chemical calculations for n=2 reveal that solvation shifts the intense 3s-3p excitations of Al+ into the investigated photon energy range below 5.5 eV. During the photochemical relaxation, internal conversion from S1 to T2 takes place, and photochemical hydrogen formation starts on the T2 surface, which passes through a conical intersection, changing to T1 . On this triplet surface, the electron that was excited to the Al 3p orbital is transferred to a coordinated water molecule, which dissociates into a hydroxide ion and a hydrogen atom. If the system remains in the triplet state, this hydrogen radical is lost directly. If the system returns to singlet multiplicity, the reaction may be reversed, with recombination with the hydroxide moiety and electron transfer back to aluminium, resulting in water evaporation. Alternatively, the hydrogen radical can attack the intact water molecule, forming molecular hydrogen and aluminium dihydroxide. Photodissociation is observed for up to n=8. Clusters with n=9 or 10 occur exclusively as HAlOH+ (H2 O)n-1 and are transparent in the investigated energy range. For n=4-8, a mixture of Al+ (H2 O)n and HAlOH+ (H2 O)n-1 is present in the experiment.

Photochemistry and UV/vis spectroscopy of hydrated vanadium cations, V+(H2O)n, n = 1-41, a model system for photochemical hydrogen evolution

Photochemical hydrogen evolution provides fascinating perspectives for light harvesting. Hydrated metal ions in the gas phase are ideal model systems to study elementary steps of this reaction on a molecular level. Here we investigate mass-selected hydrated monovalent vanadium ions, with a hydration shell ranging from 1 to 41 water molecules, by photodissociation spectroscopy. The most intense absorption bands correspond to 3d-4p transitions, which shift to the red from n = 1 to n = 4, corresponding to the evolution of a square-planar complex. Additional water molecules no longer interact directly with the metal center, and no strong systematic shift is observed in larger clusters. Evolution of atomic and molecular hydrogen competes with loss of water molecules for all V+(H2O)n, n ≤ 12. For n ≥ 15, no absorptions are observed, which indicates that the cluster ensemble is fully converted to HVOH+(H2O)n-1. For the smallest clusters, the electronic transitions are modeled using multireference methods with spin-orbit coupling. A large number of quintet and triplet states is accessible, which explains the broad features observed in the experiment. Water loss most likely occurs after a series of intersystem crossings and internal conversions to the electronic ground state or a low-lying quintet state, while hydrogen evolution is favored in low lying triplet states.

Asymmetric Solvation of the Zinc Dimer Cation Revealed by Infrared Multiple Photon Dissociation Spectroscopy of Zn2+(H2O)n (n = 1-20)

Investigating metal-ion solvation—in particular, the fundamental binding interactions—enhances the understanding of many processes, including hydrogen production via catalysis at metal centers and metal corrosion. Infrared spectra of the hydrated zinc dimer (Zn₂⁺(H₂O)_n; n = 1–20) were measured in the O–H stretching region, using infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy. These spectra were then compared with those calculated by using density functional theory. For all cluster sizes, calculated structures adopting asymmetric solvation to one Zn atom in the dimer were found to lie lower in energy than structures adopting symmetric solvation to both Zn atoms. Combining experiment and theory, the spectra show that water molecules preferentially bind to one Zn atom, adopting water binding motifs similar to the Zn⁺(H₂O)_n complexes studied previously. A lower coordination number of 2 was observed for Zn₂⁺(H₂O)₃, evident from the highly red-shifted band in the hydrogen bonding region. Photodissociation leading to loss of a neutral Zn atom was observed only for n = 3, attributed to a particularly low calculated Zn binding energy for this cluster size.

Spectroscopy and photochemistry of copper nitrate clusters

The investigation of copper nitrate cluster anions Cu(ii)n(NO3)2n+1-, n ≤ 4, in the gas phase using ultraviolet/visible/near-infrared (UV/vis/NIR) spectroscopy provides detailed insight into the electronic structure of the copper salt and its intriguing photochemistry. In the experimentally studied region up to 5.5 eV, the spectra of copper(ii) nitrate exhibit a 3d-3d band in the vis/NIR and well-separated bands in the UV. The latter bands originate from Ligand-to-Metal Charge Transfer (LMCT) as well as n-π* transitions in the nitrate ligands. The clusters predominantly decompose by loss of neutral copper nitrate in the electronic ground state after internal conversion or via the photochemical loss of a neutral NO3 ligand after a LMCT. These two decomposition channels are in direct competition on the ground state potential energy surface for the smallest copper nitrate cluster, Cu(ii)(NO3)3-. Here, copper nitrate evaporation is thermochemically less favorable. Population of π* orbitals in the nitrate ligands may lead to N-O bond photolysis. This is observed in the UV region with a small quantum efficiency, with photochemical loss of either nitrogen dioxide or an oxygen atom.

Assessing the Intrinsic Strengths of Ion–Solvent and Solvent–Solvent Interactions for Hydrated Mg2+ Clusters

Information resulting from a comprehensive investigation into the intrinsic strengths of hydrated divalent magnesium clusters is useful for elucidating the role of aqueous solvents on the Mg2+ ion, which can be related to those in bulk aqueous solution. However, the intrinsic Mg–O and intermolecular hydrogen bond interactions of hydrated magnesium ion clusters have yet to be quantitatively measured. In this work, we investigated a set of 17 hydrated divalent magnesium clusters by means of local vibrational mode force constants calculated at the ωB97X-D/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory, where the nature of the ion–solvent and solvent–solvent interactions were interpreted from topological electron density analysis and natural population analysis. We found the intrinsic strength of inner shell Mg–O interactions for [Mg(H2O)n]2+ (n = 1–6) clusters to relate to the electron density at the bond critical point in Mg–O bonds. From the application of a secondary hydration shell to [Mg(H2O)n]2+ (n = 5–6) clusters, stronger Mg–O interactions were observed to correspond to larger instances of charge transfer between the lp(O) orbitals of the inner hydration shell and the unfilled valence shell of Mg. As the charge transfer between water molecules of the first and second solvent shell increased, so did the strength of their intermolecular hydrogen bonds (HBs). Cumulative local vibrational mode force constants of explicitly solvated Mg2+, having an outer hydration shell, reveal a CN of 5, rather than a CN of 6, to yield slightly more stable configurations in some instances. However, the cumulative local mode stretching force constants of implicitly solvated Mg2+ show the six-coordinated cluster to be the most stable. These results show that such intrinsic bond strength measures for Mg–O and HBs offer an effective way for determining the coordination number of hydrated magnesium ion clusters.

Microsolvation of Zn cations: infrared multiple photon dissociation spectroscopy of Zn+(H2O)n (n = 2-35)

The structures, along with solvation evolution, of size-selected Zn⁺(H₂O)_n (n = 2-35) complexes have been determined by combining infrared multiple photon photodissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy and density functional theory. The infrared spectra were recorded in the O-H stretching region, revealing varying shifts in band position due to different water binding motifs. Concordant with previous studies, a coordination number of 3 is observed, determined by the sudden appearance of a broad, red-shifted band in the hydrogen bonding region for clusters n > 3. The coordination number of 3 seems to be retained even for the larger clusters, due to incoming ligands experiencing significant repulsion from the Zn⁺ valence 4s electron. Evidence of spectrally distinct single- and double-acceptor sites are presented for medium-sized clusters, 4 ≤n≤ 7, however for larger clusters, n≥ 8, the hydrogen bonding region is dominated by a broad, unresolved band, indicative of the increased number of second and third coordination sphere ligands. No evidence of a solvated, six-fold coordinated Zn²⁺ ion/solvated electron pair is present in the spectra.

Photochemical activation of carbon dioxide in Mg+(CO2)(H2O)0,1

We combine multi-reference ab initio calculations with UV-VIS action spectroscopy to study photochemical activation of CO2 on a singly charged magnesium ion, [MgCO2(H2O)0,1]+, as a model system for the metal/ligand interactions relevant in CO2 photochemistry. For the non-hydrated species, two separated Mg+ 3s-3p bands are observed within 5.0 eV. The low-energy band splits upon hydration with one water molecule. [Mg(CO2)]+ decomposes highly state-selectively, predominantly via multiphoton processes. Within the low-energy band, CO2 is exclusively lost within the excited state manifold. For the high-energy band, an additional pathway becomes accessible: the CO2 ligand is activated via a charge transfer, with photochemistry taking place on the CO2 - moiety eventually leading to a loss of CO after absorption of a second photon. Upon hydration, already excitation into the first and second excited state leads to CO2 activation in the excited state minimum; however, CO2 predominantly evaporates upon fluorescence or absorption of another photon.

Carbon Dioxide Activation at Metal Centers: Evolution of Charge Transfer from Mg .+ to CO2 in [MgCO2 (H2 O)n ].+ , n=0-8

We investigate activation of carbon dioxide by singly charged hydrated magnesium cations Mg ^.+(H₂O)_n, through infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy combined with quantum chemical calculations. The spectra of [MgCO₂(H₂O)_n]^.+ in the 1250–4000 cm⁻¹ region show a sharp transition from n=2 to n=3 for the position of the CO₂ antisymmetric stretching mode. This is evidence for the activation of CO₂ via charge transfer from Mg ^.+ to CO₂ for n≥3, while smaller clusters feature linear CO₂ coordinated end‐on to the metal center. Starting with n=5, we see a further conformational change, with CO₂^.− coordination to Mg²⁺ gradually shifting from bidentate to monodentate, consistent with preferential hexa‐coordination of Mg²⁺. Our results reveal in detail how hydration promotes CO₂ activation by charge transfer at metal centers.

Infrared Multiple Photon Dissociation Spectroscopy of Hydrated Cobalt Anions Doped with Carbon Dioxide CoCO2 (H2 O)n - , n=1-10, in the C-O Stretch Region

We investigate anionic [Co,CO2 ,nH2 O]- clusters as model systems for the electrochemical activation of CO2 by infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy in the range of 1250-2234 cm-1 using an FT-ICR mass spectrometer. We show that both CO2 and H2 O are activated in a significant fraction of the [Co,CO2 ,H2 O]- clusters since it dissociates by CO loss, and the IR spectrum exhibits the characteristic C-O stretching frequency. About 25 % of the ion population can be dissociated by pumping the C-O stretching mode. With the help of quantum chemical calculations, we assign the structure of this ion as Co(CO)(OH)2 - . However, calculations find Co(HCOO)(OH)- as the global minimum, which is stable against IRMPD under the conditions of our experiment. Weak features around 1590-1730 cm-1 are most likely due to higher lying isomers of the composition Co(HOCO)(OH)- . Upon additional hydration, all species [Co,CO2 ,nH2 O]- , n≥2, undergo IRMPD through loss of H2 O molecules as a relatively weakly bound messenger. The main spectral features are the C-O stretching mode of the CO ligand around 1900 cm-1 , the water bending mode mixed with the antisymmetric C-O stretching mode of the HCOO- ligand around 1580-1730 cm-1 , and the symmetric C-O stretching mode of the HCOO- ligand around 1300 cm-1 . A weak feature above 2000 cm-1 is assigned to water combination bands. The spectral assignment clearly indicates the presence of at least two distinct isomers for n ≥2.

Geometric and electronic structure analysis of calcium water complexes with one and two solvation shells

The stability of calcium water complexes is investigated quantum mechanically. Ground and excited electronic states are studied for hexa-, octa-, and octakaideca-coordinated complexes, where calcium valence electrons move to outer diffuse orbitals.

Ligation Kinetics as a Probe for Non-Covalent Electrostatic Bonding and Electron Solvation of Alkali and Alkaline Earth Cations with Ammonia

Mono-ligation kinetics were measured for ammonia reacting with atomic cations in the first two groups of the periodic table (K⁺, Rb⁺, Cs⁺ and Ca⁺, Sr⁺, Ba⁺). Also, mono-ligation energies were computed using density functional theory (DFT) in an attempt to assess the role of non-covalent electrostatic interactions in these chemical reactions. The measurements were performed at room temperature in helium bath gas at 0.35 Torr using an inductively coupled plasma/selected-ion flow tube (ICP/SIFT) tandem mass spectrometer. Rate coefficients are reported for ammonia addition, the only reaction channel that was observed with all these cations. A systematic decrease in the rate of addition of NH₃ was observed for both group 1 and 2 cations going down the periodic table. The computational studies predict a decrease in the adduct binding energy and an increase in the bond separation going down groups 1 and 2 of the periodic table and provide some insight into the role of the extra selectron in the group 2 radical cations in ligand bonding. A correlation is seen between the efficiency of ligation and the binding energy of the adduct ion and attributed to the lifetime of the intermediate encounter complex against back dissociation which is dependent on its well depth. Higher-order additions of ammonia were also observed. Remarkable differences in the extent and kinetics were seen between the group 1 and 2 cations, and these were attributed to the occurrence of ammonia solvation of the extra s electron in the higher-order adducts of the alkaline earth cations.

Superatomic nature of alkaline earth metal–water complexes: the cases of Be(H2O)0,+4 and Mg(H2O)0,+6

Beryllium– and magnesium–water complexes are shown to accommodate peripheral electrons around their Be²⁺(H₂O)₄ and Mg²⁺(H₂O)₆ cores in hydrogenic type orbitals.
