Matrix-filler interactions and solvent sorption features of nanohydroxyapatite (nHA) embedded ethylene-co-vinyl acetate (EVA)-millable polyurethane (MPU) blends

We report the solvent sorption features and matrix filler interactions of nanohydroxyapatite (nHA) embedded ethylene-co-vinyl acetate (EVA)-millable polyurethane (MPU) blends, using toluene, xylene, and t-butylacetate as probe molecules. The EVA/MPU blends were initially loaded with different quantities of n-HA, and the interfacial interactions were evaluated through FTIR and XRD techniques. The modulation of solvent resistance was subsequently examined in terms of filler loading, temperature and molar volume of the probes. With an increase in the amount of nHA, the solvent resistance of the matrix has been found to be enhanced, with the mechanism of transport regularly deviating from the conventional Fickian mode normally followed by elastomer matrices. The Flory-Rehner equation was employed to compute the molecular mass between crosslinks (M_c) and the crosslink density (γ). The observed enhancement in the crosslink density and the degree of reinforcement has been attributed to the increased polar-polar interactions after nHA loading into the matrix. The experimentally obtained values of M_c have been compared with phantom and affine models, to identify the type of deformation happening under solvent stress. The reinforcement effect within the matrix, as a function of filler loading, has been verified by using the Kraus equation. The swelling resistance of the composites has also been verified in biological fluids in view of the possible biofield applications of the composites.

Highly Conformable, Transparent Electrodes for Epidermal Electronics

We present a highly conformable, stretchable, and transparent electrode for application in epidermal electronics based on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and Ag nanowire (AgNW) networks. With the addition of a small amount of a commercially available nonionic surfactant, Triton X, PDMS became highly adhesive and mechanically compliant, key factors for the development of conformable and stretchable substrates. The polar functional groups present in Triton X interacted with the Pt catalyst present in the PDMS curing agent, thereby hindering the cross-linking reaction of PDMS and modulating the mechanical properties of the polymer. Due to the strong interactions that occur between the polar functional groups of Triton X and AgNWs, AgNWs were effectively embedded in the adhesive PDMS (a-PDMS) matrix, and the highly enhanced conformability, mechanical stretchability, and transparency of the a-PDMS matrix were maintained in the resulting AgNW-embedded a-PDMS matrix. Finally, wearable strain and electrocardiogram (ECG) sensors were fabricated from the AgNW-embedded a-PDMS. The a-PDMS-based strain and ECG sensors exhibited significantly improved sensing performances compared with those of the bare PDMS-based sensors because of the better stretchability and conformability to the skin of the former sensors.

Dielectric and relaxation properties of composites of epoxy resin and hyperbranched-polyester-treated nanosilica

Hyperbranched polyester is effective for enhancing molecular bond strength and improving the mechanical behavior of nanofilled polymers. This study examines the dielectric and polarization relaxation characteristics of epoxy resin composites filled with nanosilica 30 nm in diameter, which is treated by terminal carboxyl hyperbranched polyester. TEM and SEM analysis indicate that the nanosilica surface is grafted with a functional polymer layer ranging in thickness from several to tens of nanometers, and the nanosilica agglomeration in epoxy resin is remarkably inhibited. Measurements of thermally stimulated depolarization current and differential scanning calorimetry show that, deep traps with an energy of 1.09 eV are present in the nanocomposites, and the glass transition temperature (T_g) is increased by 11 °C at most at filler concentrations from 1 to 7 wt%. Moreover, the room-temperature relative permittivity and dielectric loss factor of the composites at 50 Hz are decreased by 0.22 and 1.3‰, respectively. Conductivity at 10 mHz to 1 kHz and dc conductivity are also significantly decreased when the operating temperature is below T_g. The polarization relaxation process of the nanocomposite is dominated by regional carrier migration, interfacial and dipole polarization. The relaxation frequency of dipole polarization at high temperature (>T_g) is transformed to satisfy the Vogel–Tammann–Fulcher law. This research suggests that both the dielectric and the polarization relaxation properties of the epoxy resin composites can be modified by filling hyperbranched-polyester-treated nanosilica, because it enhances the bond strength of the inorganic–organic interface and enlarges the molecular scale of the composites via cross-linking reactions.
