Unveiling the influence of hydrophobicity on inhibiting hydrogen dissociation for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution of covalent organic frameworks

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have gained considerable interest as candidate photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution. In this work, we synthesized β-keto-enamine-based COFs (TpPa-X, TpDB, and TpDTP) to explore the relations between structures and photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. COFs were divided into two groups: (1) TpPa-X with different substituents attached to the TpPa backbone and (2) COFs featuring diamine linkers of varied lengths (TpDB and TpDTP). Experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that moderate hydrophobicity is favorable for the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution process, and acceptable contact angles are anticipated to range from 65° to 80°. Naturally, there are comprehensive factors that affect photocatalytic reactions, and the regulation of different backbones and substituents can considerably affect the performance of COFs for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution in terms of electronic structure, specific surface area, surface wettability, carrier separation efficiency, and hydrogen dissociation energy. Results show that TpPa-Cl2 (TpPa-X, X  = Cl2) demonstrates the highest photocatalytic activity, approximately 14.51 mmol g-1h-1, with an apparent quantum efficiency of 4.62 % at 420 nm. This work provides guidance for designing efficient COF-based photocatalysts.

High-Resolution X-ray Absorption and Emission Spectroscopy for Detailed Analysis of New CO2 Methanation Catalysts

A new approach for the characterization of CO2 methanation catalysts prepared by thermal decomposition of a nickel MOF by hard X-ray photon-in/photon-out spectroscopy in form of high energy resolution fluorescence detected X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy (HERFD-XANES) and valence-to-core X-ray emission (VtC-XES) is presented. In contrast to conventional X-ray absorption spectroscopy, the increased resolution of both methods allows a more precise phase determination of the final catalyst, which is influenced by the conditions during MOF decomposition.

Advancements in visible light responsive MOF composites for photocatalytic decontamination of textile wastewater: A review

Heterogeneous photocatalysis using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is expected to provide a pivotal solution for the remediation of toxic dyes and heavy metals from textile wastewater. However, MOFs often suffer from a low removal efficiency, due to the rapid recombination between holes and electrons, generated upon photoexcitation. Additionally, the MOFs exhibit poor water stability, which restricts their large-scale application. In this regard, various approaches (i.e. doping of metal nanoparticle, semiconductor, quantum dot, and ligand functionalization) have been adopted for the formation of multifunctional composites. The MOF-composites possess suitable photochemical, surface, optical, and electronic properties, resulting in enhanced water stability, visible light absorption, and reduced recombination between photogenerated species. This comprehensive review targets to provide an insight into the synthesis and subsequent application of various MOF composites for photocatalytic removal of organic contaminants (dyes) and inorganic (Cr(VI)) contaminants from water. MOFs/graphene oxide composites possess improved surface area and reusability whereas noble metal incorporated MOFs composites suffer from photocorrosion and are relatively costly. Zr and Ti based MOFs exhibit tuning from UV to visible light response and surpass the poor water stability upon binary/ternary composite formation. The role of the dopants in enhancing the efficiency of the composites; the effect of influencing factors such as solution pH, pollutant concentration; the mechanism, and the kinetics of reactions have been outlined. In spite of many advancements, the article also summarizes some roadblocks that need to be unraveled to achieve the energy-water-environment nexus and scope for future breakthrough research in this field.

Synthesis of MOFs for RhB Adsorption from Wastewater

Fe-MOFs were prepared using a solvothermal method, and were characterized by scanning electron microscopy. We explored the application of Fe-MOFs as an adsorbing material for the removal of Rhodamine B (RhB) from aqueous solutions. The experimental data were simulated by dynamics and the results showed that the pseudo–second-order kinetics model was appropriate for analysis of RhB removal. We studied the adsorption capacity of MOF materials under different masses, concentrations, and pH conditions. When the pH was 6, the maximum adsorption capacity within 4 h was 135 mg/g. In summation, the removal of RhB from wastewater using MOFs is feasible, inexpensive, and effective. Hence, our findings indicate that MOFs have a broad application in the purification of wastewater.

Insights into the Stability and Activity of MIL-53(Fe) in Solar Photocatalytic Oxidation Processes in Water

MIL-53(Fe) is a metal organic framework that has been recently considered a heterogeneous photocatalyst candidate for the degradation of water pollutants under visible or solar radiation, though stability studies are rather scarce in the literature. In this work, MIL-53(Fe) was successfully synthesized by a solvothermal method and fully characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), N2 adsorption–desorption isotherm, Thermogravimetric analysis coupled with mass spectrometry (TGA-MS), UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), elemental analysis and wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WDXRF). The effects of pH, temperature, solar radiation and the presence of oxidants (i.e., electron acceptors) such as ozone, persulfate and hydrogen peroxide on the stability of MIL-53(Fe) in water were investigated. The as-synthetized MIL-53(Fe) exhibited relatively good stability in water at pH 4 but suffered fast hydrolysis at alkaline conditions. At pH 4–5, temperature, radiation (solar and visible radiation) and oxidants exerted negative effect on the stability of the metal–organic framework (MOF) in water, resulting in non-negligible amounts of metal (iron) and linker (terephthalic acid, H2BDC) leached out from MIL-53(Fe). The photocatalytic activity of MIL-53(Fe) under simulated solar radiation was studied using phenol and metoprolol as target pollutants. MIL-53(Fe) on its own removed less than 10% of the pollutants after 3 h of irradiation, while in the presence of ozone, persulfate or hydrogen peroxide, complete elimination of pollutants was achieved within 2 h of exposure to radiation. However, the presence of oxidants and the formation of some reaction intermediates (e.g., short-chain carboxylic acids) accelerated MIL-53(Fe) decarboxylation. The findings of this work suggest that MIL-53(Fe) should not be recommended as a heterogeneous photocatalyst for water treatment before carrying out a careful evaluation of its stability under actual reaction conditions.

CdS/Ag2S/g-C3N4 ternary composites with superior photocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution under visible light irradiation

CdS/Ag2S/g-C3N4 ternary composites as photocatalysts with different amounts of Ag2S were successfully synthesized through a simple chemical deposition method. These photocatalysts were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) mapping and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to obtain the information of the structure and composition. Compared with the pure samples and binary composites, CdS/Ag2S/g-C3N4 ternary composites showed enhanced hydrogen production activities, and the maximum hydrogen production rate of CdS/Ag2S(2%)/CN is about 1020.54 μmol g-1 h-1 in Na2S-Na2SO3 solution. Based on the photoluminescence and electrochemical results, the improved photocatalytic activity could be attributed not only to the synergic effect of ternary components in the composite, but also to the introduction of Ag2S that provided abundant active sites for H2 production. A possible mechanism was investigated in detail.

Synthesis of Metal Organic Frameworks by Ball-Milling

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been used in adsorption, separation, catalysis, sensing, photo/electro/magnetics, and biomedical fields because of their unique periodic pore structure and excellent properties and have become a hot research topic in recent years. Ball milling is a method of small pollution, short time-consumption, and large-scale synthesis of MOFs. In recent years, many important advances have been made. In this paper, the influencing factors of MOFs synthesized by grinding were reviewed systematically from four aspects: auxiliary additives, metal sources, organic linkers, and reaction specific conditions (such as frequency, reaction time, and mass ratio of ball and raw materials). The prospect for the future development of the synthesis of MOFs by grinding was proposed.

Recent advances in MOF-based photocatalysis: environmental remediation under visible light

Highly photoactive MOFs can be engineered via various strategies for the purpose of extended visible light absorption, more efficient generation, separation and transfer of charge carriers, as well as good recyclability.

Enhancement of Photocatalytic Activity under Visible Light Irradiation via the AgI@TCNQ Core-Shell Structure

In this paper, a AgI@TCNQ photocatalyst with a core-shell structure was reported. A two-dimensional TCNQ (7,7,8,8-Tetracyanoquinodimethane) nanosheet, with a π-π conjugate structure, was used as a shell layer to realize the flexible coating on the surface of AgI nanoparticles. These special core-shell structure composites solve the key problems of the small interface of the bulk composites and the lesser charge transfer paths, which could accelerate the migration of photogenerated carriers. Thus, the AgI@TCNQ photocatalysts showed the better photodegradation performance for the methylene blue (MB) solution, and the degradation rate of AgI@TCNQ (1 wt.%) composite was 1.8 times than AgI under irradiation. The reactive species trapping experiments demonstrated that ·O2-, h+, and ·OH all participated in the MB degradation process. The photocatalytic mechanism of AgI@TCNQ composites could be rationally explained by considering the Z-scheme structure, resulting in a higher redox potential and more efficient separation of charge carriers. At the same time, the unique core-shell structure provides a larger contact area, expands the charge transport channel, and increases the surface active sites, which are beneficial for improving photocatalytic performance.
