Discs to a 'Bright' Future: Exploring Discotic Liquid Crystals in Organic Light Emitting Diodes in the Era of New-Age Smart Materials

With the advent of a new decade and the paradigm shift of every sphere of urban life to virtual platforms, it has become imperative for the global researcher community to channelize efforts into upgradation of the existing display-technology. In this context, discotic liquid crystals (DLCs) are a class of self-assembling organic materials that are recently being explored in fabricating the emissive layers of organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). With their unique inherent structural and functional properties, they have the potential to challenge the currently prevailing OLED-emitters. Yet the applications of this promising class of materials in OLEDs have not been comprehensively reviewed in literature till now. In this account, we present an overview of the developments in the field of luminescent DLC-based emitters, supported by their associated photophysical phenomena and their performance parameters as emitters in fabricated OLED devices.

Synthesis of some new distyrylbenzene derivatives using immobilized Pd on an NHC-functionalized MIL-101(Cr) catalyst: photophysical property evaluation, DFT and TD-DFT calculations

In this study the catalytic application of a heterogeneous Pd-catalyst system based on metal organic framework [Pd-NHC-MIL-101(Cr)] was investigated in the synthesis of distyrylbenzene derivatives using the Heck reaction. The Pd-NHC-MIL-101(Cr) catalyst showed high efficiency in the synthesis of these π-conjugated materials and products were obtained in high yields with low Pd-contamination based on ICP analysis. The photophysical behaviors for some of the synthesized distyrylbenzene derivatives were evaluated. The DFT and TD-DFT methods were employed to determine the optimized molecular geometry, band gap energy, and the electronic absorption and emission wavelengths of the new synthesized donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) molecules in the gas phase and in various solvents using the chemical model B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) level of theory.

Aggregation-Induced Emission and Organogels with Chiral and Racemic Pyrene-Substituted Cyanostyrenes

The synthesis, photophysical investigations, and organogel formation of pyrene-phenyl acrylonitriles (1-6) bearing mono-, di-, and trichiral and racemic substitutions were studied. The molecules self-assemble in water and show remarkable emission wavelength and intensity changes associated with distinct color changes. Cryo-scanning electron microscopy (Cryo-SEM) images show the formation of uniform nanoaggregates for the monosubstituted derivatives and network-like structures for di- and trisubstituted derivatives. The favorable π-π stacking ability of the coplanar pyrene ring, steric restrictions due to the cyano group, and beneficial noncovalent interactions from the citronellol moiety allow the molecules to form excellent organogels with fibrous and twisted ribbon morphology for the racemic and chiral derivatives. The organogels based on small molecules could be of high relevance for potential investigations involving soft biological matter.

Substituent enhanced fluorescence properties of star α-cyanostilbenes and their application in bioimaging

Emission and Color Tuning of Cyanostilbenes and White Light Emission

White-light-emitting diodes are energy efficiency replacement of conventional lighting sources. Herein, we report the luminescent behavior of three simple cyanostilbenes with triphenylamine-donating groups bearing different electron-withdrawing groups (phenyl, pyridyl, and p-nitrophenyl) in a common donor (D)-π-acceptor (A) α-cyanostilbene construct along with their thermal and electrochemical properties. The density functional theory (DFT) studies reveal that aggregation-induced emission characteristic feature of the D-π-A dyes is inversely proportional to the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) effect, that is, phenyl-and pyridyl-substituted compounds show characteristic aggregation-induced emission in water, whereas the ICT effect is dominant for the nitro derivative. The extent of ICT and the solvatochromic emission shifts, from blue to red, depend on the strength of the electron-withdrawing group. White luminescence and tunable emission colors are obtained by careful admixtures of these cyanostilbenes bearing triphenylamines. The results rationalized through DFT and time-dependent DFT calculations follow a consistent trend with the energy levels measured from the electrochemical and optical studies. Thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry studies showed excellent thermal stability of the compounds. The scanning electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering measurements were performed to reveal the formation of aggregates. This strategy involving synthetically simple and structurally similar molecules with different emission properties has potential applications in the fabrication of multicolor and white-light-emitting materials.
