Template Imprinting Versus Porogen Imprinting of Small Molecules: A Review of Molecularly Imprinted Polymers in Gas Sensing

The selective sensing of gaseous target molecules is a challenge to analytical chemistry. Selectivity may be achieved in liquids by several different methods, but many of these are not suitable for gas-phase analysis. In this review, we will focus on molecular imprinting and its application in selective binding of volatile organic compounds and atmospheric pollutants in the gas phase. The vast majority of indexed publications describing molecularly imprinted polymers for gas sensors and vapour monitors have been analysed and categorised. Specific attention was then given to sensitivity, selectivity, and the challenges of imprinting these small volatile compounds. A distinction was made between porogen (solvent) imprinting and template imprinting for the discussion of different synthetic techniques, and the suitability of each to different applications. We conclude that porogen imprinting, synthesis in an excess of template, has great potential in gas capture technology and possibly in tandem with more typical template imprinting, but that the latter generally remains preferable for selective and sensitive detection of gaseous molecules. More generally, it is concluded that gas-phase applications of MIPs are an established science, capable of great selectivity and parts-per-trillion sensitivity. Improvements in the fields are likely to emerge by deviating from standards developed for MIP in liquids, but original methodologies generating exceptional results are already present in the literature.

Understanding the Effect of Water on CO2 Adsorption

Carbon capture from large sources and ambient air is one of the most promising strategies to curb the deleterious effect of greenhouse gases. Among different technologies, CO₂ adsorption has drawn widespread attention mostly because of its low energy requirements. Considering that water vapor is a ubiquitous component in air and almost all CO₂-rich industrial gas streams, understanding its impact on CO₂ adsorption is of critical importance. Owing to the large diversity of adsorbents, water plays many different roles from a severe inhibitor of CO₂ adsorption to an excellent promoter. Water may also increase the rate of CO₂ capture or have the opposite effect. In the presence of amine-containing adsorbents, water is even necessary for their long-term stability. The current contribution is a comprehensive review of the effects of water whether in the gas feed or as adsorbent moisture on CO₂ adsorption. For convenience, we discuss the effect of water vapor on CO₂ adsorption over four broadly defined groups of materials separately, namely (i) physical adsorbents, including carbons, zeolites and MOFs, (ii) amine-functionalized adsorbents, and (iii) reactive adsorbents, including metal carbonates and oxides. For each category, the effects of humidity level on CO₂ uptake, selectivity, and adsorption kinetics under different operational conditions are discussed. Whenever possible, findings from different sources are compared, paying particular attention to both similarities and inconsistencies. For completeness, the effect of water on membrane CO₂ separation is also discussed, albeit briefly.

Synthesis of ammonia molecularly imprinted adsorbents and ammonia adsorption separation during sludge aerobic composting

Ammonia (NH₃) is the predominant harmful odor emitted from sludge aerobic composting plants, however, this NH₃ could be recycled and used as energy or nitrogen fertilizer. Therefore, the aim of this study was to use molecular imprinting technology to prepare an adsorbent that could separate NH₃ from mixed gases. An NH₃ molecular imprinted polymer (NH₃-MIP) was prepared by precipitation polymerization and optimal synthesis was determined by testing several different ratios of reaction components. NH₃ adsorption capacity of the optimal NH₃-MIP was 1.62 times that of non-imprinted material. NH₃ separation factors increased from 154 (dimethyl sulfides) and 217 (dimethyl disulfides) for non-imprinted material, to 213 (dimethyl sulfides) and 302 (dimethyl disulfides) for the NH₃-MIP. The adsorption mechanism was identified as physical adsorption and hydrogen bonding between H-O on the -COOH in NH₃-MIP and the nitrogen in NH₃. Effective desorption at 150 °C with vacuum maintained over 95% of the NH₃ adsorption capacity.

Adsorptive recovery of Au(III) from aqueous solution using crosslinked polyethyleneimine resins

Resin adsorption is considered as a promising method to recover gold ions from wastewater, but further reduction reaction is required to convert gold ions into particles. In this study, a crosslinked polyethyleneimine resin (CPEIR) was developed via a suspension polymerization of polyethyleneimine (PEI) and ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDE) for gold recovery. The Au(III) adsorption capacities of CPEIR were significantly impacted by solution pH and initial Au(III) concentrations but unaffected by co-existing metal ions. Compared with commercial anion-exchange resin IRA400, the CPEIR exhibited higher sorption amount and selectivity for Au(III) due to its high density of amine and hydroxyl groups on the surfaces. The adsorption isotherm of Au(III) on CPEIR was well described by the Langmuir equation, and the maximum uptake amount of Au(III) was high up to 943.5 mg/g, much higher than the reported sorbents. The adsorption kinetic data on the CPEIR were fitted well by the Pseudo-second-order equation, and the intraparticle diffusion was found to be the rate-controlling process of Au(III) adsorption. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed that Au(III) ions were adsorbed on the CPEIR via electrostatic attraction and chelating interaction, and subsequently the partial loaded Au(III) ions were reduced to elemental gold whereas the hydroxyl groups of CPEIR were oxidized to carbonyl groups.
