Palladium(ii) and platinum(ii) complexes with ONN donor pincer ligand: synthesis, characterization and in vitro cytotoxicity study

New Pd(ii) and Pt(ii) complexes with ONN donor pincer ligand are synthesized. Antiproliferative activity of the complexes is explored towards HCT116, HepG2, MCF-7 and A549 cell lines.

A novel AIE-active camphor-based fluorescent probe for simultaneous detection of Al3+ and Zn2+ at dual channels in living cells and zebrafish

A novel dual-functional probe N'-(2-hydroxy-5-((4,7,7-trimethyl-3-oxobicyclo[2.2.1] heptan-2-ylidene)methyl) benzylidene)picolinohydrazide (PSH) was constructed from natural camphor. This probe showed strong yellow-green fluorescence at 535 nm due to its aggregation-induced emission (AIE) feature. Interestingly, the probe PSH displayed a significant turn-on fluorescence response towards Al³⁺ (green fluorescence at 500 nm) and Zn²⁺ (orange fluorescence at 555 nm) at two different emissive channels. The detection limits of PSH towards Al³⁺ and Zn²⁺ were found to be 12.1 nM and 14.2 nM, respectively. PSH exhibited excellent selectivity and anti-interference performance and could distinguish between Al³⁺/Zn²⁺ and identify whether Zn²⁺ exists in the PSH-Al³⁺ complex by adding ATP. The binding mechanisms between PSH and Al³⁺/Zn²⁺ ions were supported by ¹H NMR, HRMS analysis, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Based on its outstanding sensing properties, the probe PSH was used to establish molecular logic function gates. Moreover, the probe PSH could be applied to detect Al³⁺ and Zn²⁺ in real environmental water, and fluorescence detection was well demonstrated by test strips. Furthermore, the probe PSH was employed for imaging Al³⁺ and Zn²⁺ in HeLa cells and zebrafish.

Ratiometric sensing of Zn2+ with a new benzothiazole-based fluorescent sensor and living cell imaging

A new fluorescent probe, 3-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-5-bromosalicylaldehyde-⁴N-phenyl thiosemicarbazone (BTT), for ratiometric sensing of Zn²⁺ ions in methanol/HEPES buffer solution (3 : 2, pH = 7.4) is reported in this paper. The presence of Zn²⁺ ions yields a significant blue shift in the maximum emission of BTT from 570 nm to 488 nm, accompanied by a clear color change from orange to green. This emission change of BTT upon binding to Zn²⁺ in a 1 : 1 ratio may be due to the block of excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) as well as chelation enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) on complex formation. The limit of detection (LOD) determined for Zn²⁺ quantitation was down to 37.7 nM. In addition, the probe BTT displays the ability to image both exogenous Zn²⁺ ions loaded into HeLa cells and endogenous Zn²⁺ distribution in living SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells.

A bisphenol based fluorescence chemosensor for the selective detection of Zn2+ and PPi ions and its bioluminescence imaging

A bisphenol based fluorescence "turn-on" chemosensor 4,4'-(propane-2,2-diyl)bis(2-((E)-(2-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)hydrazineyldene)methyl)phenol) (BHMP) has been synthesized and its sensing behavior was tested towards various ionic species. The chemo-sensing behavior of BHMP has been established through absorption, fluorescence, NMR, and mass spectroscopic techniques. The probe BHMP selectively detects zinc ions over other metal ions and the resulting BHMP + Zn²⁺ ensemble serves as a secondary probe for the detection of pyrophosphate (PPi) anion specifically over other anions. The spectroscopic studies reveal the fluorescence enhancement of BHMP in association with Zn²⁺ ions was quenched in the presence of pyrophosphate (PPi) anions. A probable mechanism of this selective sensing behavior was described on the basis of "OFF-ON-OFF" strategy for detection of both cations and anions. Moreover, the biological applicability of the chemosensor BHMP was examined via cell imaging studies.

A flexible tripod fluorescent probe for multiple cations detection and its application in living cells

To the flexible tripod platform tren (tris(2-aminoethyl)amine), a Rhodamine and two naphthalene fluorophores were introduced. The resulting fluorescence probe named TRN was fully characterized and employed in cell imaging. Probe TRN exhibited high selectivity and excellent sensitivity for the simultaneous fluorescence detection of Zn²⁺/Hg²⁺/Al³⁺/Cu²⁺. The significant changes in the fluorescence color make naked-eye detection possible. Furthermore, fluorescence imaging experiments of Zn²⁺/Hg²⁺/Al³⁺/Cu²⁺ in living PC3 cells demonstrated its value for practical applications in biological systems.

Facile synthesis of N,B-co-doped carbon dots with the gram-scale yield for detection of iron (III) and E. coli

A simple method was developed to prepare fluorescent nitrogen/boron-doped carbon dots (N,B-CDs) in the gram scale. The results showed that the CDs exhibited blue photoluminescence (PL) under 365 nm ultraviolet radiation and excitation-dependent emission. Heteroatoms entered the CDs to enhance the photochemical properties, and their positive properties can be attributed to the presence of guanidino group and functionalized with boronic acid for realizing their utilization in certain applications. These materials could be applied to monitor Fe³⁺ via static PL quenching, yielding a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.74 μM. Furthermore, the charged and boronic acid groups on the prepared N,B-CDs enabled their use as recognition elements to bind with the bacteria through electrostatic interaction and allowed covalent interactions to form the corresponding boronate ester with E. coli (E. coli) bacterial membrane. This method could satisfy a linear range of 10²-10⁷ with LOD of 165 cfu ml^-1 for E. coli. This method was applied for the determination of E. coli in tap water and orange juice samples, and satisfactory results were obtained.

A selective “turn-on” sensor for recognizing In3+ and Zn2+ in respective systems based on imidazo[2,1-b]thiazole

An imidazo[2,1-b]thiazole-based compound (X) was designed and synthesized as an “off–on–off” sensor for the multiple recognition of In³⁺ and Zn²⁺ in different systems.

Fast and Reversible "Turn on" Fluorescent Sensors Based on Bisphenol-a for Zn2+ in Aqueous Solution

Two novel bisphenol-A derivatives (R1 and R2) linked pyrene and napthylthiazole moieties were synthesized via condensation reaction, and positively applied for the selective recognition of Zn²⁺ ion in EtOH/H₂O. Their optical properties were observed by using UV-vis and fluorescence measurements. R1 and R2 exhibited high selectivity and sensitivity towards Zn²⁺ over other metal ions. This fluorescence selectivity may be owing to inhibited excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and photoinduced electron transfer (PET). The fluorescence titration analysis indicated detection limits of R1 and R2 for Zn²⁺ at 17.5 nM and 0.94 μM, respectively. Moreover, R1 and R2 were successfully applied to the detection of Zn²⁺ with different concentrations in water samples.

A selective hydrolytic and restructuring approach through a Schiff base design on a coumarin platform for “turn-on” fluorogenic sensing of Zn2+

The designed molecular probe, CMD, undergoes Zn²⁺ triggered restructuring and shows a fluorescence change in only 30 seconds. The LOD was found to be of sub-nanomolar level.
