A homochiral tartrate-bridged dinuclear chromium(III) complex anion with a resonance-assisted hydrogen bond for proton conduction

The synthesis of a homochiral building block based on L-tartrate-chromium(III) complex anions is reported. The dinuclear complex anion, which contains two bridging L-tartrate ligands and one aromatic N-donor ligand coordinated to chromium(III) ions, exhibits a boat conformation in which intramolecular resonance-assisted hydrogen bonding is present. The sodium L-tartrate-chromium(III) compound with the formula Na[Cr2(bpy)2(L-tart)2H]·9H2O (1) crystallizes from a methanol-water solution as a high water content material in the monoclinic space group P2. The as-synthesized compound is only stable at high relative humidity and undergoes structural transformations during drying, which are accompanied by water loss. However, these transformations are reversible and upon wetting, the material returns to its high water content structure. Based on a combination of experimental techniques (PXRD, in situ ATR-FTIR and EPR spectroscopy), the structure of the complex anions appears to be insensitive to the humidity variable processes (wetting and drying). Due to the presence of several hydrogen acceptor and donor groups in the L-tartrate-chromium(III) complex anion, we investigated the proton transport properties of a sodium L-tartrate-chromium(III) compound by impedance spectroscopy under dry and wet conditions at different temperatures. Since the relative humidity affects the structural transformations in this system, it also has a large influence on the proton conductivity, which varies by up to four orders of magnitude depending on the degree of hydration. These results confirm that the proton conductivity can be tuned in flexible structures in which non-covalent interactions determine the crystal packing.

Not So Similar: Different Ways of Nb(V) and Ta(V) Catecholate Complexation

The reactions between catechol (H₂cat) and niobium(V) or tantalum(V) precursors in basic aqueous solutions lead to the formation of catecholate complexes of different natures. The following complexes were isolated and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD): (1) (NH₄)₃[NbO(cat)₃]∙4H₂O; (2) K₂[Nb(cat)₃(Hcat)]·2H₂cat·2H₂O; (3) Cs₃[NbO(cat)₃]·H₂O; (4) (NH₄)₄[Ta₂O(cat)₆]·3H₂O; (5) Cs₂[Ta(cat)₃(Hcat)]·H₂cat; (6) Cs₄[Ta₂O(cat)₆]·7H₂O. The isolated crystalline products were characterized by elemental analysis, X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), FTIR, and TGA. The structural features of these complexes, such as {Ta₂O} unit geometry, Cs-π interactions, and crystal packing effects, are discussed.

Key Strategy for the Rational Incorporation of Long-Lived NIR Emissive Cr(III) Chromophores into Polymetallic Architectures

The Cr^IIIN₆ chromophores are particularly appealing for low-energy sensitization via energy transfer processes since they show extremely long excited state lifetimes reaching the millisecond range in the technologically crucial near-infrared domain. However, their properties were barely harnessed in multimetallic structures because of the lack of both monitoring methods and accessible synthetic pathways. We herein report a remedy to monitor and control the formation of Cr^III-containing assemblies in solution via the design of a Cr^IIIN₆ inert "complex-as-ligand" that can be included into polymetallic architectures. As a proof of concept, these CrN₆ building blocks were reacted in solution with Zn^II or Fe^II to give extended trinuclear linear Cr-M-Cr assemblies, the structure of which could be addressed by NMR spectroscopy despite the presence of two slowly relaxing Cr^III paramagnetic centers. In addition to long Cr^III excited state lifetimes and weak sensitivity to oxygen quenching, these polymetallic assemblies display controlled Cr^III to M^II energy transfers, which pave the way for use of the "complex-as-ligand" strategy for introducing photophysically active Cr^III probes into light-converting polymetallic devices.
