Synthesis of multicolor silver nanostructures for colorimetric sensing of metal ions (Cr3+, Hg2+ and K+) in industrial water and urine samples with different spectral characteristics

In this work, we have synthesized four different color (yellow, orange, green, and blue (multicolor)) silver nanostructures (AgNSs) by chemical reduction method where silver nitrate, sodium borohydride and hydrogen peroxide were used as reagents. The as-synthesized multicolor AgNSs were successfully functionalized with bovine serum albumin (BSA) and applied as a colorimetric sensor for the assaying of metal cations (Cr³⁺, Hg²⁺, and K⁺). The addition of metal ions (Cr³⁺, Hg²⁺, and K⁺) into BSA functionalized AgNSs (BSA-AgNSs) causes the aggregation of BSA-AgNSs, and are accompanied by visual color changes with red or blue shift in the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band of BSA-AgNSs. The BSA-AgNSs show different SPR characteristic for each metal ions (Cr³⁺, Hg²⁺, and K⁺) with exhibiting different spectral shift and color change. The yellow color BSA-AgNSs (Y-BSA-AgNSs) act as a probe for sensing Cr³⁺, orange color BSA-AgNSs (O-BSA-AgNSs) act as probe for Hg²⁺ ion assay, green color BSA-AgNSs (G-BSA-AgNSs) act as a probe for the assaying of both K⁺ and Hg²⁺, and blue color BSA-AgNSs (B-BSA-AgNSs) act as a sensor for colorimetric detection of K⁺ ion. The detection limits were found to be 0.26 μM for Cr³⁺ (Y-BSA-AgNSs), 0.14 μM for Hg²⁺ (O-BSA-AgNSs), 0.05 μM for K⁺ (G-BSA-AgNSs), 0.17 μM for Hg²⁺ (G-BSA-AgNSs), and 0.08 μM for K⁺ (B-BSA-AgNSs), respectively. Furthermore, multicolor BSA-AgNSs were also applied for assaying of Cr³⁺, and Hg²⁺ in industrial water samples and K⁺ in urine sample.

Ultrafast colorimetric detection of Cr(VI) using Fe3O4@polydopamine/Prussian blue composites as a highly efficient peroxidase mimic

A recyclable peroxidase mimic Fe₃O₄@polydopamine/Prussian blue (Fe₃O₄@PDA/PB) composite was facilely prepared by coating PDA on an Fe₃O₄ nanoparticle core and in situ growth of PB nanoparticles on a PDA shell. The prepared Fe₃O₄@PDA/PB composite exhibited excellent peroxidase-like activity and can catalytically oxidize the colorless colorimetric substrate 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into a blue colored product in the presence of H₂O₂ at 30 °C in 1 min. The catalytic mechanism was deduced to be the nanozyme-promoted generation of a hydroxyl radical (·OH), and the catalytic behavior followed the typical Michaelis-Menten kinetics. Based on Cr(VI)-boosted peroxidase-like activity of Fe₃O₄@PDA/PB, a simple and fast colorimetric method for detection of Cr(VI) was developed. Under the optimum conditions, the colorimetric method exhibited wider linear range (100 nM to 140 μM), low LOD (51.1 nM), good selectivity and short detection time (1 min). Moreover, the feasibility of the proposed colorimetric method was evaluated by determination of Cr(VI) in spiked tap water and lake water samples. Good recoveries (95.2-102.9%) and low relative standard deviations (RSDs) (1.6-4.4%) were obtained, showing great promise for practical use.

Multi-functional porous organic polymers for highly-efficient solid-phase extraction of β-agonists and β-blockers in milk

A simple, accurate, and highly sensitive analytical method was developed in this study for the determination of ten β-agonists and five β-blockers in milk. In this method, new adsorbent phosphonic acid-functionalized porous organic polymers were synthesized through a direct knitting method. The synthesis procedure of the materials and the extraction conditions (such as the composition of loading buffer and eluent) were optimized. Benefitting from the high surface area (545–804 m² g⁻¹), multiple functional framework and good porosity, the phosphonic acid-functionalized porous organic polymers showed a high adsorption rate and high adsorption capacity for β-agonists (224 mg g⁻¹ and 171 mg g⁻¹ for clenbuterol and ractopamine, respectively). The analytes were quantified by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry. It showed a good linearity (with R² ranging from 0.9950 to 0.9991 in the linear range of 3–5 orders of magnitude), with low limits of quantification ranging from 0.05 to 0.25 ng g⁻¹. The limits of detection of the method for the analytes were measured to be in the range of 0.02 to 0.1 ng g⁻¹. The recoveries of target analytes from real samples on the material were in the range of 62.4–119.4% with relative standard deviations of 0.6–12.1% (n = 4). Moreover, good reproducibility of the method was obtained with the interday RSD being lower than 11.7% (n = 5) and intraday RSD lower than 12.2% (n = 4). The proposed method was accurate, reliable and convenient for the simultaneous analysis of multiple β-agonists and β-blockers. Finally, the method was successfully applied for the analysis of such compounds in milk samples.

Novel phosphonic acid-functionalized porous organic polymers were synthesized through direct knitting method. It shows high adsorption efficiency and high adsorption capacity for multiple β-agonists and β-blockers analysis.

Colorimetric detection of chromium (VI) ion using poly(N-phenylglycine) nanoparticles acting as a peroxidase mimetic catalyst

This paper reports on enzyme-like catalytic properties of polyethylene glycol-functionalized poly(N-phenylglycine) (PNPG-PEG) nanoparticles, which have not been explored to date. The developed nanoparticles have the ability to display great inherent peroxidase-like activity at very low concentrations, and are able to catalyze the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) substrate in presence of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂). The oxidized product of TMB has a deep blue color with a maximum absorbance at ~655 nm. The PNPG-PEG nanoparticles exhibit K_m values of 0.2828 for TMB and 0.0799 for H₂O₂, indicating that TMB oxidation takes place at lower concentration of H₂O₂ in comparison to other nanozymes. Based on the known mechanism of H₂O₂ oxidation by hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] ions to generate hydroxyl radicals (^•OH), these nanoparticles were successfully applied for the colorimetric sensing of Cr(VI) ions. The sensor achieved good performance for Cr(VI) sensing with detection limits of 0.012 μM (0.01-0.1 μM linear range) and 0.52 μM (0.05-12.5 μM linear range). The detection scheme was highly selective, and successfully applied for the detection of Cr(VI) in real water samples.

Field analysis of Cr(vi) in water samples by using a smartphone-based ultralong absorption path reflection colorimetric device

Hexavalent chromium is highly toxic and regarded as one of the main pollutants in the environment. A multiple reflection colorimetric cell is designed to improve the sensitivity in field analysis for Cr(vi).

Dual sensing and synchronous fluorescence spectroscopic monitoring of Cr3+and Al3+ using a luminescent Schiff base: Extraction and DFT studies

A well designed, new pyrene based small molecule (L) was synthesized from 1:1 condensation reaction of 1-aminopyrene and 6-(1,3-benzodioxal-5-yl)-2-pyridine carboxaldehyde which was characterized by absorption, emission spectrometry, FTIR, NMR and mass studies. Interestingly the UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopic studies revealed that the ligand (L) works as a dual turn-on luminescent chemosensor for chromium(III) (Cr³⁺) and aluminium(III) (Al³⁺) in aqueous environment which were further supported by DFT and TDDFT studies. L shows a significant colour change from pale yellow to reddish yellow with a detection limit of ~10^-9 M in the presence of Cr³⁺ and Al³⁺ whereas there were no noteworthy changes in the presence of other monovalent and divalent metal ions. The molecular signaling in the presence of Cr³⁺, Al³⁺, Fe³⁺ and EDTA was compared with advanced level combinational INHIBIT gate based on 4 input logic gates. Herein, first derivative constant wavelength synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy (1^st DCWSFS) was applied for the determination of Cr³⁺, Al³⁺ ion concentrations in a mixture via increment of spectral resolution of the respective overlapping peaks. 1^st DCWSFS is reported to be used in pharmaceuticals but very few works have been done for determination of metal ion concentration in environmental sample without prior separation. The individual Cr³⁺and Al³⁺ ion concentrations in a mixture were determined through liquid-liquid extraction process and the efficiencies were compared with 1^st derivative SFS method. It was observed that 1^st derivative SFS process is more efficient than conventional liquid-liquid extraction process. Therefore, 1^st DCWSFS method using sensor L might be useful as a diagnostic tool for detection of individual metal ion concentrations (Cr³⁺ and Al³⁺) from a mixture which will be cost-effective, time saving and more precise.

Graphene oxide chemically modified with 5-amino-1,10-phenanthroline as sorbent for separation and preconcentration of trace amount of lead(II)

Graphene oxide (GO) was chemically functionalized with 5-amino-1,10-phenanthroline. The resulting conjugate (phen-GO) was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The experiments show that phen-GO has a high affinity for extraction of Pb(II) ions. Isotherms and kinetics fit the Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order equations. By using phen-GO as a sorbent, Pb(II) ions can be quantitatively adsorbed at pH 6.0. The adsorption capacity is 548 mg g^-1. Following desorption with 2 mol L^-1 HNO₃, Pb(II) was quantified by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. The effects of pH value, eluent type, sorption time, sample volume, and matrix ions were optimized. The accuracy of the method was validated by analysis of the reference materials DOLT-3 (dogfish liver) and SRM 1640a (natural water). Under optimal conditions, the calibration plots cover the 0.25 to 500 ng mL^-1 Pb(II) concentration range. The method was successfully applied to the analysis of spiked water and biological samples. Other figures of merit include a preconcentration factor of 250, a detection limit of 46 ng L^-1, and a relative standard deviation of <5%.
