Silver-infused TiO2 nanowires and unveiling their potential for superior wastewater dye remediations

Silver infused ultrathin TiO2 nanowires (NWs) were synthesized via a single step solvothermal approach. The crystallinity, structure, and morphology were determined to understand the physicochemical nature of the nanocomposites. The catalytic efficiency of the newly synthesized nanocatalysts was tested for the textile waste treatment taking methylene blue (MB) as model pollutant under solar light irradiations. Nearly 96% photodegradation efficiency for MB was achieved within 20 min. Furthermore, the recyclability of the photocatalyst was also studied, and the material remained stable and effective up to four consecutive runs. Synthesis and Characterization of Naproxen Intercalated Zinc Oxide Stacked Nanosheets for Enhanced Hepatoprotective Potential

Liver diseases pose a significant global health burden, with limited therapeutic options for chronic cases. Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanomaterials have emerged as promising candidates for hepatoprotection due to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and regenerative properties. However, their potential remains hampered by insufficient drug loading and controlled release. The current study explores the intercalation of Naproxen (Nx), a potent anti-inflammatory and analgesic drug, within ZnO stacked nanosheets (SNSs) to address these limitations. Herein, an easy and solution-based synthesis of novel Nx intercalated ZnO SNSs was established. The obtained Nx intercalated ZnO SNSs were encapsulated with poly(vinyl acetate) (PVA) to make them biocompatible. The synthesized biocomposite was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), which confirm the successful synthesis and intercalation of Nx within the ZnO SNSs. The obtained outcomes showed that the configuration of ZnO nanosheets was altered when Nx was introduced, resulting in a more organized stacking pattern. An in vivo investigation of mice liver cells unveiled that the Nx intercalated ZnO SNss had increased hepatoprotective properties. The study's results provide valuable insights into using Nx intercalated ZnO SNss for targeted drug delivery and improved treatment effectiveness, particularly for liver-related illnesses.

Ternary Metal (Cu-Ni-Zn) Oxide Nanocomposite via an Environmentally Friendly Route

In this work, we report the engineering of sub-30 nm nanocomposites of CuO/ZnO/NiO by using Dodonaea viscosa leaf extract. Zinc sulfate, nickel chloride, and copper sulfate were used as salt precursors, and isopropyl alcohol and water were used as solvents. The growth of nanocomposites was investigated by varying the concentrations of precursors and surfactants at pH 12. The as-prepared composites were characterized by XRD analysis and found to have CuO (monoclinic), ZnO (hexagonal primitive), and NiO (cubic) phases with an average size of 29 nm. FTIR analysis was performed to investigate the mode of fundamental bonding vibrations of the as-prepared nanocomposites. The vibrations of the prepared CuO/ZnO/NiO nanocomposite were detected at 760 and 628 cm^-1, respectively. The optical bandgap energy of the CuO/NiO/ZnO nanocomposite was 3.08 eV. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy was performed to calculate the band gap by the Tauc approach. Antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of the synthesized CuO/NiO/ZnO nanocomposite were investigated. It was found that the antimicrobial activity of the synthesized nanocomposite increases with an increase in the concentration. The antioxidant activity of the synthesized nanocomposite was examined by using both ABTS and DPPH assays. The obtained results show an IC₅₀ value of 0.110 for the synthesized nanocomposite compared to DPPH and ABTS (0.512), which is smaller than that of ascorbic acid (IC₅₀ = 1.047). Such a low IC₅₀ value ensures that the antioxidant potential of the nanocomposite is higher than that of ascorbic acid, which in turn shows their excellent antioxidant activity against both DPPH and ABTS.

Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) Using Debregeasia Salicifolia for Biological Applications

The synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs) using the green route is environmentally harmonious and cost-effective compared to conventional chemical and physical methods. In this study, the green synthesis of silver NPs was carried out using an extract of Debregeasia salicifolia. The synthesized Ag NPs were characterized by means of different techniques i.e., UV-Vis spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, SEM, and XRD. The XRD pattern exhibited distinctive Bragg's peaks at (200), (111), (311), and (220). The XRD analysis confirmed the face-centered cubic geometry of the synthesized NPs and revealed that the nature of these NPs is crystalline. The synthesized NPs were verified for their antibacterial activities against Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) bacteria. It showed that antibacterial activity of synthesized silver (NPs) was increased with increasing concentrations of both calcined and non-calcined NPs. The antioxidant activities of Ag NPs were also determined against ABTS at different concentrations for both calcined and non-calcined Ag NPs. Non-calcined Ag NPs have greater antioxidant activity than calcined Ag NPs. This report has a significant medicinal application, and it might open up new horizons in this field.

Use of Typical Wastes as Biochars in Removing Diethyl Phthalate (Det) from Water

Diethyl phthalate (DEP), one of the six typical PAEs priority pollutants declared by the US EPA, has attracted tremendous attention due to its widespread pollution and was selected as the adsorbate in this study. Properties of biochar samples obtained from three different feedstocks, i.e., sawdust (SDBC), rice straw (RSBC), and giant reed (GRBC), pyrolyzed at 400 °C as well as their ability to adsorb DEP from an aqueous solution were investigated. The results showed that the adsorption kinetics were well fitted with the pseudo-second-order model (R2 > 0.99) and the intraparticle diffusion model (R2 > 0.98). The maximal adsorption capacity of the DEP by the prepared biochar was in an order of GRBC (46.04 mg g−1) > RSBC (31.54 mg g−1) > and SDBC (18.39 mg g−1). The higher adsorption capacity of DEP by GRBC is mainly attributed to the higher surface area. The reduction in adsorption capacity of the biochar against DEP with an increase in the solution pH (from 2.5 to 10.0) was possibly due to promoting the electrostatic repulsion between the DEP and the surface of the biochar. However, the increasing sodium ionic strength promoted the adsorption of the biochar, which could be interpreted by the reduced solubility of the DEP due to enhancing “salting out” effects as increasing sodium concentration. In addition, it was favorable for the adsorption of DEP onto the biochars at a lower temperature (15 °C) and the calculated ∆G0 was less than zero, indicating that the adsorption was a spontaneous and exothermic process. These experiments designate that these derived biochars can be used as an inexpensive adsorbent for the purification of PAEs contaminated water.

Soft-template-assisted synthesis: a promising approach for the fabrication of transition metal oxides

The past few decades have witnessed transition metal oxides (TMOs) as promising candidates for a plethora of applications in numerous fields. The exceptional properties retained by these materials have rendered them of paramount emphasis as functional materials. Thus, the controlled and scalable synthesis of transition metal oxides with desired properties has received enormous attention. Out of different top-down and bottom-up approaches, template-assisted synthesis predominates as an adept approach for the facile synthesis of transition metal oxides, owing to its phenomenal ability for morphological and physicochemical tuning. This review presents a comprehensive examination of the recent advances in the soft-template-assisted synthesis of TMOs, focusing on the morphological and physicochemical tuning aided by different soft-templates. The promising applications of TMOs are explained in detail, emphasizing those with excellent performances.

Electronic Tuning of Zinc Oxide by Direct Fabrication of Chromium (Cr) incorporated photoanodes for Visible-light driven Water Splitting Applications

Herein, we report the synthesis of Cr incorporated ZnO sheets arrays microstructures and construction of photoelectrode through a direct aerosol assisted chemical vapour deposition (AACVD) method. The as-prepared Cr incorporated ZnO microstructures were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, powdered X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and UV-Vis diffused reflectance spectroscopy. The Cr incorporation in ZnO red shifted the optical band gap of as-prepared photoanodes. The 15% Cr incorporation in ZnO has shown enhanced PEC performance. The AACVD method provides an efficient in situ incorporation approach for the manipulation of morphological aspects, phase purity, and band structure of photoelectrodes for an enhanced PEC performance.

Self-Assembly of Ultrathin Nanocrystals to Multidimensional Superstructures

The self-assembly of ultrathin nanocrystals (UTNCs) into well-organized multidimensional superstructures is one of the key topics in material chemistry and physics. Highly ordered nanocrystal assemblies also known as superstructures or synthetic structures have remained a focus for researchers over the past few years due to synergy in their properties as compared to their components. Here, we aim to present the recent progress being made in this field with highlights of our research group endeavors in the engineering of self-assembled complex multidimensional superstructures of various inorganic materials, including polyoxometalates. The driving forces for the assembly process and its kinetics along with the potential applications associated with these unique ordered and spatially complex superstructures are also discussed.
