Electrodeposited PEDOT:PSS-Al2O3 Improves the Steady-State Efficiency of Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells

The atomic layer deposition (ALD) of Al₂O₃ between perovskite and the hole transporting material (HTM) PEDOT:PSS has previously been shown to improve the efficiency of perovskite solar cells. However, the costs associated with this technique make it unaffordable. In this work, the deposition of an organic-inorganic PEDOT:PSS-Cl-Al₂O₃ bilayer is performed by a simple electrochemical technique with a final annealing step, and the performance of this material as HTM in inverted perovskite solar cells is studied. It was found that this material (PEDOT:PSS-Al₂O₃) improves the solar cell performance by the same mechanisms as Al₂O₃ obtained by ALD: formation of an additional energy barrier, perovskite passivation, and increase in the open-circuit voltage (V_oc) due to suppressed recombination. As a result, the incorporation of the electrochemical Al₂O₃ increased the cell efficiency from 12.1% to 14.3%. Remarkably, this material led to higher steady-state power conversion efficiency, improving a recurring problem in solar cells.

Systematic Studies on the Effect of Fluorine Atoms in Fluorinated Tolanes on Their Photophysical Properties

In this study, we synthesized a series of fluorinated and non-fluorinated tolanes, in which one or more fluorine atoms were systematically introduced into one aromatic ring of a tolane scaffold, and systematically evaluated their photophysical properties. All the tolanes with or without fluorine substituents were found to have poor photoluminescence (PL) in tetrahydrofuran (THF) solutions. On the other hand, in the crystalline state, non-fluorinated and fluorinated tolanes with one or four fluorine atoms were less emissive, whereas fluorinated tolanes with three or five fluorine atoms exhibited high PL efficiencies (Ф_PL) up to 0.51. X-ray crystallographic analyses of the emissive fluorinated tolanes revealed that the position of the fluorine substituent played a key role in achieving a high Ф_PL. Fluorine substituents at the ortho (2/6) and para (4) positions led to tight and rigid packing due to plural π–π stacking and/or hydrogen bonding interactions, resulting in enhanced Ф_PL caused by the suppression of non-radiative deactivation. Additionally, fluorinated tolanes with three fluorine atoms exhibited notable aggregation-induced PL emission enhancement in THF/water mixed solvents. This demonstrates that the PL characteristics of small PL materials can be tuned depending on the usage requirements.

Chlorinated Spiroconjugated Fused Extended Aromatics for Multifunctional Organic Electronics

The synthesis of a new molecule, SFIC-Cl, is reported, which features enhanced π-electron delocalization by spiroconjugation and narrowed bandgap by chlorination. SFIC-Cl is integrated into a single-crystal transistor (OFET) and organic light-emitting diode (OLED). The material demonstrates remarkable transport abilities across various solution-processed OFETs and retains efficient radiance in a near-infrared OLED emitting light at 700 nm. Furthermore, the intermolecular multi-dimensional connection of SFIC-Cl enables the fabrication of a single-component large-area (2 × 2 cm² ) near-infrared OLED by spin-coating. The SFIC-Cl-acceptor-based solar cell shows excellent power conversion efficiency of 10.16% resulting from the broadened and strong absorption and well-matched energy levels. The study demonstrates that chlorinated spiroconjugated fused systems offer a novel direction toward the development of high-performance organic semiconductor materials for hybrid organic electronic devices.
