A facet-controlled Rh3Pb2S2 nanocage as an efficient and robust electrocatalyst toward the hydrogen evolution reaction

γ-Ray-Induced Photocatalytic Activity of Bi-Doped PbS toward Organic Dye Removal under Sunlight

Photocatalysts based on semiconducting chalcogenides due to their adaptable physio-chemical characteristics are attracting attention. In this work, Bi-doped PbS (henceforth PbS:Bi) was prepared using a straightforward chemical precipitation approach, and the influence of γ-irradiation on PbS's photocatalytic ability was investigated. Synthesized samples were confirmed structurally and chemically. Pb(1-x)BixS (x = 0, 0.005, 0.01, 0.02) samples that were exposed to gamma rays showed fine-tuning of the optical bandgap for better photocatalytic action beneath visible light. The photocatalytic degradation rate of the irradiated Pb0.995Bi0.005S sample was found to be 1.16 times above that of pure PbS. This is due to the occupancy of Bi3+ ions at surface lattice sites as a result of their lower concentration in PbS, which effectively increases interface electron transport and the annealing impact of gamma irradiation. Scavenger tests show that holes are active species responsible for deterioration of the methylene blue. The irradiated PbS:Bi demonstrated high stability after being used repeatedly for photocatalytic degradation.

Understanding Surface Modulation to Improve the Photo/Electrocatalysts for Water Oxidation/Reduction

Water oxidation and reduction reactions play vital roles in highly efficient hydrogen production conducted by an electrolyzer, in which the enhanced efficiency of the system is apparently accompanied by the development of active electrocatalysts. Solar energy, a sustainable and clean energy source, can supply the kinetic energy to increase the rates of catalytic reactions. In this regard, understanding of the underlying fundamental mechanisms of the photo/electrochemical process is critical for future development. Combining light-absorbing materials with catalysts has become essential to maximizing the efficiency of hydrogen production. To fabricate an efficient absorber-catalysts system, it is imperative to fully understand the vital role of surface/interface modulation for enhanced charge transfer/separation and catalytic activity for a specific reaction. The electronic and chemical structures at the interface are directly correlated to charge carrier movements and subsequent chemical adsorption and reaction of the reactants. Therefore, rational surface modulation can indeed enhance the catalytic efficiency by preventing charge recombination and prompting transfer, increasing the reactant concentration, and ultimately boosting the catalytic reaction. Herein, the authors review recent progress on the surface modification of nanomaterials as photo/electrochemical catalysts for water reduction and oxidation, considering two successive photogenerated charge transfer/separation and catalytic chemical reactions. It is expected that this review paper will be helpful for the future development of photo/electrocatalysts.

Reactive nanotemplates for synthesis of highly efficient electrocatalysts: beyond simple morphology transfer

Efficient electrocatalysts for energy conversion in general, and fuel cell operation and water electrolysis in particular, are pivotal for carbon-free hydrogen production. While the requirements of successful electrocatalysts include a high number density of catalytically active sites, high surface-to-volume ratio, inherently high catalytic activity, and robustness of the catalyst surface structure under harsh operating conditions, it is extremely difficult to synthesize nanocatalysts that could possess all these structural characteristics. Nanotemplate-mediated synthesis, namely, the coating or filling of a template with a desired material phase followed by the removal of the template, has captured the interest of researchers because of the ease of creating hollow-structured nanocatalysts with a high surface to volume ratio. Recent studies, however, have revealed that nanotemplates could be more than just passive supports because they greatly affect catalytic performance by creating an unusual synergy between the substrate and catalyst and by providing dopants to the actual catalyst phase owing to their reactive nature. In this review, we discuss the most notable recent advances in the nanotemplate-based synthesis of electrocatalysts as well as the unusual effects of nanotemplates on the performance of nanocatalysts. We also provide an outlook for this fledgling field so that future research efforts could be focused on the development of practically useful electrocatalysts that could shape the future of energy technologies.

Morphology-Controlled Metal Sulfides and Phosphides for Electrochemical Water Splitting

Because H₂ is considered a promising clean energy source, water electrolysis has attracted great interest in related research and technology. Noble-metal-based catalysts are used as electrode materials in water electrolyzers, but their high cost and low abundance have impeded them from being used in practical areas. Recently, metal sulfides and phosphides based on earth-abundant transition metals have emerged as promising candidates for efficient water-splitting catalysts. Most studies have focused on adjusting the composition of the metal sulfides and phosphides to enhance the catalytic performance. However, morphology control of catalysts, including faceted and hollow structures, is much less explored for these systems because of difficulties in the synthesis, which requires a deep understanding of the nanocrystal growth process. Herein, representative synthetic methods for morphology-controlled metal sulfides and phosphides are introduced to provide insights into these methodologies. The electrolytic performance of morphology-controlled metal sulfide- and phosphide-based nanocatalysts with enhanced surface area and intrinsically high catalytic activity is also summarized and the future research directions for this promising catalyst group is discussed.

One-pot aqueous synthesis of two-dimensional porous bimetallic PtPd alloyed nanosheets as highly active and durable electrocatalyst for boosting oxygen reduction and hydrogen evolution

Recently, two-dimensional materials have gained increasing research attention due to their large surface area, high physical and chemical stability, and excellent electrocatalytic performances. Herein, we reported a simple and fast one-pot aqueous method for synthesis of two-dimensional porous bimetallic PtPd alloyed nanosheets (NSs) using benzyldimethylhexadecylammonium chloride (HDBAC) as the capping agent and stabilizer. The formation mechanism involved the oriented attachment and self-assembly. The PtPd NSs exhibited excellent oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity with the positive shift (c.a. 43 mV) of the half-wave potential in 0.1 M KOH solution, clearly outperforming that of commercial Pt/C (50 wt%). Moreover, the as-prepared catalyst displayed 2.4 times enlargement in mass activity (MA, 382.10 mA mg^-1) and 3.5 times enhancement in specific activity (SA, 0.95 mA cm^-2) relative to those of Pt/C at 0.80 V. Meanwhile, the as-obtained catalyst demonstrated highly boosted hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in 0.5 M H₂SO₄ electrolyte, surpassing that of Pt/C. These results reveal the practical applications of the catalyst in energy storage and conversion.

Hollow nanoparticles as emerging electrocatalysts for renewable energy conversion reactions

While the realization of clean and sustainable energy conversion systems primarily requires the development of highly efficient catalysts, one of the main issues had been designing the structure of the catalysts to fulfill minimum cost as well as maximum performance. Until now, noble metal-based nanocatalysts had shown outstanding performances toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the scarcity and high cost of them impeded their practical use. Recently, hollow nanostructures including nanocages and nanoframes had emerged as a burgeoning class of promising electrocatalysts. The hollow nanostructures could expose a high proportion of active surfaces while saving the amounts of expensive noble metals. In this review, we introduced recent advances in the synthetic methodologies for generating noble metal-based hollow nanostructures based on thermodynamic and kinetic approaches. We summarized electrocatalytic applications of hollow nanostructures toward the ORR, OER, and HER. We next provided strategies that could endow structural robustness to the flimsy structural nature of hollow structures. Finally, we concluded this review with perspectives to facilitate the development of hollow nanostructure-based catalysts for energy applications.
