A densely packed Sb2O3 nanosheet-graphene aerogel toward advanced sodium-ion batteries

Exploration of electrochemical behavior of Sb-based porous carbon composites anode for sodium-ion batteries

Sb-based materials are considered as promising anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their excellent sodium storage capacities and suitable potentials. However, the Sb-based anodes usually suffer from intense volume expansion and severe pulverization during the alloying-dealloying process, resulting in poor cycling performance. Herein, a composite anode with Sb/Sb2O3 nanoparticles embedded in N-doped porous carbon is prepared by the gas-solid dual template method. The volume change of the anode material is mitigated by the carbon layer enwrapping and the confinement of the porous structure. Nitrogen doping provides abundant sodium storage sites, thus enhancing the storage capacity of sodium ion. Furthermore, to gain the accurate kinetic interpretation of the electrochemical process, an ex-situ transmission electron microscope (TEM) characterization combined with distribution of relaxation times (DRT) is conducted. The Sb/Sb2O3@NPC-1.0 demonstrates excellent electrochemical performance, achieving 340.3 mAh g-1 at 1A g-1, and maintains a capacity of 86.7 % after 1000 cycles. This work paves the way for the practical application of SIBs with high-performance and long-life Sb-based anodes.

The role of graphene aerogels in rechargeable batteries

Energy storage systems, particularly rechargeable batteries, play a crucial role in establishing a sustainable energy infrastructure. Today, researchers focus on improving battery energy density, cycling stability, and rate performance. This involves enhancing existing materials or creating new ones with advanced properties for cathodes and anodes to achieve peak battery performance. Graphene aerogels (GAs) possess extraordinary attributes, including a hierarchical porous and lightweight structure, high electrical conductivity, and robust mechanical stability. These qualities facilitate the uniform distribution of active sites within electrodes, mitigate volume changes during repeated cycling, and enhance overall conductivity. When integrated into batteries, GAs expedite electron/ion transport, offer exceptional structural stability, and deliver outstanding cycling performance. This review offers a comprehensive survey of the advancements in the preparation, functionalization, and modification of GAs in the context of battery research. It explores their application as electrodes and hosts for the dispersion of active material nanoparticles, resulting in the creation of hybrid electrodes for a wide range of rechargeable batteries including lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), Li-metal-air batteries, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) and zinc-air batteries (ZABs), aluminum-ion batteries (AIBs) and aluminum-air batteries and other.

Scalable Metal Free Zinc Ion Capattery Enabled by Interstitial Defect Engineering of Nanoscale n-Type Zinc Vanadate

This Letter explores the energy storage properties of nano zinc vanadate in zinc metal batteries and a Zn metal free capattery. The synthesis is a simple scalable solution state mechanochemical route with uniform nanosized one-dimensional zinc vanadate. The synthesized vanadate is engineered using NMP at the electrode fabrication stage to position the Zn2+ ions at an easily extractable site. This in turn tunes the bandgap from 2.38 to 2.16 eV, creating oxygen defective vacancies in the crystal lattice. In addition, electrochemical analysis of the engineered cathode is studied in a half-cell device that is further developed into a zinc metal free zinc ion capattery (ZiC). The developed metal free capattery delivered a capacity of 120 mAh g-1 at a current density of 100 mA g-1, and a pouch cell is fabricated to power light-emitting diodes.

Three-Phase-Heterojunction Cu/Cu2O-Sb2O3 Catalyst Enables Efficient CO2 Electroreduction to CO and High-Performance Aqueous Zn-CO2 Battery

Zn-CO2 batteries are excellent candidates for both electrical energy output and CO2 utilization, whereas the main challenge is to design electrocatalysts for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reactions with high selectivity and low cost. Herein, the three-phase heterojunction Cu-based electrocatalyst (Cu/Cu2O-Sb2O3-15) is synthesized and evaluated for highly selective CO2 reduction to CO, which shows the highest faradaic efficiency of 96.3% at -1.3 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, exceeding the previously reported best values for Cu-based materials. In situ spectroscopy and theoretical analysis indicate that the Sb incorporation into the three-phase heterojunction Cu/Cu2O-Sb2O3-15 nanomaterial promotes the formation of key *COOH intermediates compared with the normal Cu/Cu2O composites. Furthermore, the rechargeable aqueous Zn-CO2 battery assembled with Cu/Cu2O-Sb2O3-15 as the cathode harvests a peak power density of 3.01 mW cm-2 as well as outstanding cycling stability of 417 cycles. This research provides fresh perspectives for designing advanced cathodic electrocatalysts for rechargeable Zn-CO2 batteries with high-efficient electricity output together with CO2 utilization.

Two-dimensional material-based functional aerogels for treating hazards in the environment: synthesis, functional tailoring, applications, and sustainability analysis

Environmental pollution is a global problem that endangers human health and ecological balance. As a new type of functional material, two-dimensional material (2DM)-based aerogel is one of the most promising candidates for pollutant detection and environmental remediation. The porous, network-like, interconnected three-dimensional (3D) structure of 2DM-based aerogels can not only preserve the characteristics of the original 2DMs, but also bring many distinct physical and chemical properties to offer abundant active sites for adsorbing and combining pollutants, thereby facilitating highly efficient monitoring and treatment of hazardous pollutants. In this review, the synthesis methods of 2DM aerogels and their broad environmental applications, including various sensors, adsorbents, and photocatalysts for the detection and treatment of pollutants, are summarized and discussed. In addition, the sustainability of 2DM aerogels compared to other water purification materials, such as activated carbon, 2DMs, and other aerogels are analyzed by the Sustainability Footprint method. According to the characteristics of different 2DMs, special focuses and perspectives are given on the adsorption properties of graphene, MXene, and boron nitride aerogels, as well as the sensing and photocatalytic properties of transition metal dichalcogenide/oxide and carbon nitride aerogels. This comprehensive work introduces the synthesis, modification, and functional tailoring strategies of different 2DM aerogels, as well as their unique characteristics of adsorption, photocatalysis, and recovery, which will be useful for the readers in various fields of materials science, nanotechnology, environmental science, bioanalysis, and others.

Conversion-Alloying Anode Materials for Sodium Ion Batteries

The past decade has witnessed a rapidly growing interest toward sodium ion battery (SIB) for large-scale energy storage in view of the abundance and easy accessibility of sodium resources. Key to addressing the remaining challenges and setbacks and to translate lab science into commercializable products is the development of high-performance anode materials. Anode materials featuring combined conversion and alloying mechanisms are one of the most attractive candidates, due to their high theoretical capacities and relatively low working voltages. The current understanding of sodium-storage mechanisms in conversion-alloying anode materials is presented here. The challenges faced by these materials in SIBs, and the corresponding improvement strategies, are comprehensively discussed in correlation with the resulting electrochemical behavior. Finally, with the guidance and perspectives, a roadmap toward the development of advanced conversion-alloying materials for commercializable SIBs is created.

Three-dimensional microspheres constructed with MoS2 nanosheets supported on multiwalled carbon nanotubes for optimized sodium storage

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has been regarded as a promising anode material in the field of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), with the advantages of high theoretical capacity and large interlayer spacings. Unfortunately, its intrinsic poor electrical conductivity and large volume changes during the sodiation/desodiation reactions still limit its practical application. To deal with this shortcoming, we built MoS2 nanosheet/multiwalled carbon nanotube (denoted as MoS2-MSs/MWCNTs) composites with a three-dimensional (3D) micro-spherical structure, assembled in situ from MoS2 nanosheets. These nanosheets are connected to each other by the MWCNTs network, which provides a highly conductive pathway for electrons/ions through interparticle and intraparticle interfaces, accelerating charge transfer and ion diffusion capabilities. More importantly, the carbon network can boost electrical conductivity and relieve structural strain. Consequently, the as-prepared MoS2-MSs/MWCNTs composite presents a high reversible specific capacity of 519 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 after 100 cycles with a capacity retention of 94.4% and excellent rate performance (227 mA h g-1 at 10 A g-1). Outstanding cycling stability was also achieved (327.1 mA h g-1 over 1000 cycles at 2 A g-1) and was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. Our findings provide a simple and effective strategy to explore anode materials with advanced sodium storage properties.

Sb2O3 nanoparticles anchored on N-doped graphene nanoribbons as improved anode for sodium-ion batteries

A hybrid nanocomposite of Sb2O3 nanoparticles anchored on N-doped graphene nanoribbons is used as anode in SIBs. These hybrid electrodes demonstrate a high charge transfer and improved microstructure, facilitating the Na+ diffusion in the electrode.

A novel and fast method to prepare a Cu-supported α-Sb2S3@CuSbS2 binder-free electrode for sodium-ion batteries

Antimony sulfide (Sb₂S₃) is a promising anode material for sodium-ion batteries due to its low cost and high theoretical specific capacity. However, poor stability and a complex preparation process limit its large-scale application. Herein, we prepare a binder-free composite electrode composed of amorphous (α-) Sb₂S₃ and copper antimony sulfide (CuSbS₂) through a simple closed-space sublimation (CSS) method. When applied as the anode in sodium-ion batteries, the α-Sb₂S₃@CuSbS₂ electrode exhibits excellent performance with a high discharge capacity of 506.7 mA h g⁻¹ at a current density of 50 mA g⁻¹ after 50 cycles. The satisfactory electrochemical performance could be ascribed to the α-Sb₂S₃–CuSbS₂ composite structure and binder-free electrode architecture, which not only retain the structural stability of the electrode but also improve the electrical conductivity. Consequently, CSS, as a scalable and environmentally friendly method, can produce a binder-free electrode in just a few minutes, demonstrating its great potential in the industrial production of sodium-ion batteries. This study may open an avenue to preparing binder-free commercial electrodes.

Dual metal oxides interconnected by carbon nanotubes for high-capacity Li- and Na-ion batteries

Sb₂O₃ and Co₃O₄ as potential anode materials for Li- and Na-ion batteries exhibit high theoretical capacities and excellent electrochemical stability; however, volume expansion, exfoliation and poor electronic conductivity affect the electrochemical performance to some extent. Here, we design dual metal oxide hybrid composites by one- and two-step solvothermal processes, in which Co₃O₄ with Sb₂O₃ traps Li⁺ ions and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as a network guarantee for electron transport. Sb₂O₃/CNTs/Co₃O₄ and Sb₂O₃/Co₃O₄/CNTs composites exhibit different morphologies, particles sizes and Li⁺/Na⁺ storage performance. The Sb₂O₃/CNTs/Co₃O₄ composite showes initial capacities of 1790 and 1450 mAh g^-1 after 100 cycles as the anode for a Li-ion battery. The capacity retention of the Sb₂O₃/Co₃O₄/CNTs composite is better than the Sb₂O₃/CNTs/Co₃O₄ composite for Na-ion storage. With charge/discharge cycles, the transition reaction of Sb₂O₃ and Co₃O₄ to Sb and Co repeats, leading to a homogenous distribution in CNTs and further growth of the nanoparticles. This work provides new insights into the design of high-capacity anodes for Li- and Na-ion storage by adjusting their composition and morphology.

Porous Sb with three-dimensional Sb nanodendrites as electrode material for high-performance Li/Na-ion batteries

The increasing demand in energy consumption and the use of clean energy from sustainable energy sources have driven the research in the development of advanced materials for Li-ion and Na-ion batteries. In this work, we have developed a simple technique to synthesize a porous Sb structure through a galvanic replacement reaction between Sb³⁺ and Zn particles. The porous Sb structure consists of a three-dimensional-hierarchical structure with tree-like nanoscale Sb dendrites. The Sb in the nanodendrites is crystal of a rhombohedral structure. We construct Li-/Na-ion half cells and Li-/Na-ion full cells with the Sb nanodendrites as the active material in the working electrode and anode, respectively, and introduce an additive of vinylene carbonate for the Li-ion half/full cells and an additive of fluoroethylene carbonate for the Na-ion half/full cells. All the Li-/Na-ion half cells and Li-/Na-ion full cells exhibit excellent electrochemical performance and cycling stability. Such excellent performance can be attributed to the synergistic interaction between the three-dimensional-dendritic structure and electrolyte, which likely ensures fast transport of ions and electrons and the formation of a stable solid-state interphase.

Beyond Lithium-Based Batteries

We discuss the latest developments in alternative battery systems based on sodium, magnesium, zinc and aluminum. In each case, we categorize the individual metals by the overarching cathode material type, focusing on the energy storage mechanism. Specifically, sodium-ion batteries are the closest in technology and chemistry to today's lithium-ion batteries. This lowers the technology transition barrier in the short term, but their low specific capacity creates a long-term problem. The lower reactivity of magnesium makes pure Mg metal anodes much safer than alkali ones. However, these are still reactive enough to be deactivated over time. Alloying magnesium with different metals can solve this problem. Combining this with different cathodes gives good specific capacities, but with a lower voltage (<1.3 V, compared with 3.8 V for Li-ion batteries). Zinc has the lowest theoretical specific capacity, but zinc metal anodes are so stable that they can be used without alterations. This results in comparable capacities to the other materials and can be immediately used in systems where weight is not a problem. Theoretically, aluminum is the most promising alternative, with its high specific capacity thanks to its three-electron redox reaction. However, the trade-off between stability and specific capacity is a problem. After analyzing each option separately, we compare them all via a political, economic, socio-cultural and technological (PEST) analysis. The review concludes with recommendations for future applications in the mobile and stationary power sectors.

High Volumetric and Gravimetric Capacity Electrodeposited Mesostructured Sb2 O3 Sodium Ion Battery Anodes

Sodium ion batteries (SIBs) are considered promising alternatives to lithium ion batteries for grid-scale and other energy storage applications because of the broad geographical distribution and low cost of sodium relative to lithium. Here, fabrication and characterization of high gravimetric and volumetric capacity 3D Ni-supported Sb₂ O₃ anodes for SIBs are presented. The electrodes are prepared by colloidal templating and pulsed electrodeposition followed by heat treatment. The colloidal template is optimized to provide large pore interconnects in the 3D scaffold to enable a high active materials loading and accommodate a large volume expansion during cycling. An electrodeposited loading of 1.1 g cm^-3 is chosen to enable a combined high gravimetric and volumetric capacity. At this loading, the electrodes exhibit a specific capacity of ≈445 mA h g^-1 and a volumetric capacity of ≈488 mA h cm^-3 with a capacity retention of 89% after 200 cycles at 200 mA g^-1 . The stable cycling performance can be attributed to the 3D metal scaffold, which supports active materials undergoing large volume changes, and an initial heat treatment appears to improve the adhesion of the Sb₂ O₃ to the metal scaffold.

A generalized strategy for the synthesis of two-dimensional metal oxide nanosheets based on a thermoregulated phase transition

Two-dimensional (2D) metal oxide (MO) nanomaterials, like graphene, possess unique electrical, mechanical, optical and catalytic performances, and have attracted substantial research interest recently. However, it remains a challenge to easily obtain 2D MO nanosheets by a generalized synthetic pathway. Here, we report a general and facile strategy for the synthesis of 2D MO nanosheets induced by nonionic surfactant micelles. Notably, the novel strategy primarily relies on the thermoregulated phase transition of the micelles. The resulting 2D MO nanosheets show high specific surface areas. As a demonstration, Sb2O3 nanosheets synthesized by our method as anodes for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have a high reversible capacity of 420 mA h g-1 and a high capacity retention of 99% after 150 cycles at 0.1 A g-1. Mn3O4 nanosheets for supercapacitors have a remarkable specific capacitance of 127 F g-1 at a current density of 0.5 A g-1. Even at a large current density of 5 A g-1 after 10 000 cycles, 96% of the specific capacitance is retained, demonstrating the remarkable performance of these nanosheets for energy storage applications.

A graphite-modified natural stibnite mineral as a high-performance anode material for sodium-ion storage

Recently, Sb₂S₃ has drawn extensive interest in the energy storage domain due to its high theoretical capacity of 946 mA h g⁻¹. However, the inherent disadvantages of serious volume expansion and poor conductivity restrict the development of Sb₂S₃ for its application in SIBs. In addition, chemical synthesis is a main method to prepare Sb₂S₃, which is commonly accompanied by environmental pollution and excessive energy consumption. Herein, the natural stibnite mineral was directly applied in SIBs after modification with graphite via an effective and facile approach. The novel composites exhibited excellent electrochemical properties with higher reversible capacity, better rate capability and more outstanding cycling stability than the bare natural stibnite mineral. Briefly, this study is anticipated to provide a reference for the development of natural minerals as first-hand materials in energy storage and a new approach to improve natural stibnite mineral composites for their application as anodes in SIBs.
