Plasmon-enhanced versatile optical nonlinearities in a Au-Ag-Au multi-segmental hybrid structure

A Novel SPR Immunosensor Based on Dual Signal Amplification Strategy for Detection of SARS-CoV-2 Nucleocapsid Protein

Since the global outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), it has spread rapidly around the world. The nucleocapsid (N) protein is one of the most abundant SARS-CoV-2 proteins. Therefore, a sensitive and effective detection method for SARS-CoV-2 N protein is the focus of research. Here, we developed a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor based on the dual signal-amplification strategy of Au@Ag@Au nanoparticles (NPs) and graphene oxide (GO). Additionally, a sandwich immunoassay was utilized to sensitively and efficiently detect SARS-CoV-2 N protein. On the one hand, Au@Ag@Au NPs have a high refractive index and the capability to electromagnetically couple with the plasma waves propagating on the surface of gold film, which are harnessed for amplifying the SPR response signal. On the other hand, GO, which has the large specific surface area and the abundant oxygen-containing functional groups, could provide unique light absorption bands that can enhance plasmonic coupling to further amplify the SPR response signal. The proposed biosensor could efficiently detect SARS-CoV-2 N protein for 15 min and the detection limit for SARS-CoV-2 N protein was 0.083 ng/mL, with a linear range of 0.1 ng/mL~1000 ng/mL. This novel method can meet the analytical requirements of artificial saliva simulated samples, and the developed biosensor had a good anti-interference capability.

Revealing the alloying and dealloying behaviours in AuAg nanorods by thermal stimulus

Binary metallic nanocrystals are attractive as they offer an extra degree of freedom for structure and phase modulation to generate synergistic effects and extraordinary properties. However, whether the binary structures and phases at the nanoscale still follow the rules established on the bulk counterparts remains unclear. In this work, AuAg nanorods were used as a sample to probe into this issue. An in situ heating method by combining aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopes with a chip-based heating holder was employed to perform the heating experiments. It was found that the AuAg nanorods, which initially possessed heterostructures, can be designed and engineered to be gradient phase alloys with thermal pulses over 350 °C. Atomic diffusion inside the rod structures did not alter the shape of the rods but provided a route to fine-tune their properties. At higher temperatures, the discrepant sublimation behaviours between Au and Ag lead to dealloying of the nanorods. Durative sublimation of the Ag element can continuously tailor the lengths of the nanorods while concentrating the Au composition simultaneously. Especially, nearly pure Au nanocrystals can be obtained with the depletion of Ag by sublimation. These findings give insights into the nanoscale structure and phase behaviours in binary alloys and provide an alternative way to fine-tune their structure, phase, and properties.

Gold Nanorods: The Most Versatile Plasmonic Nanoparticles

Gold nanorods (NRs), pseudo-one-dimensional rod-shaped nanoparticles (NPs), have become one of the burgeoning materials in the recent years due to their anisotropic shape and adjustable plasmonic properties. With the continuous improvement in synthetic methods, a variety of materials have been attached around Au NRs to achieve unexpected or improved plasmonic properties and explore state-of-the-art technologies. In this review, we comprehensively summarize the latest progress on Au NRs, the most versatile anisotropic plasmonic NPs. We present a representative overview of the advances in the synthetic strategies and outline an extensive catalogue of Au-NR-based heterostructures with tailored architectures and special functionalities. The bottom-up assembly of Au NRs into preprogrammed metastructures is then discussed, as well as the design principles. We also provide a systematic elucidation of the different plasmonic properties associated with the Au-NR-based structures, followed by a discussion of the promising applications of Au NRs in various fields. We finally discuss the future research directions and challenges of Au NRs.

Gap-Induced Giant Third-Order Optical Nonlinearity and Long Electron Relaxation Time in Random-Distributed Gold Nanorod Arrays

The third-order optical nonlinearities and the hot electron relaxation time (τ) of random-distributed gold nanorods arrays on glass (R-GNRA) have been investigated by using Z-scan and optical Kerr effect (OKE) techniques. Large third-order optical susceptibility (χ⁽³⁾) with the value of 2.5 × 10^-6 esu has been obtained around the plamsonic resonance peak under the excitation power intensity of 0.1 GW/cm². Further decrease of the excitation power intensity down to 0.3 MW/cm² will lead to the significant increase of χ⁽³⁾ up to 6.4 × 10^-4 esu. The OKE results show that the relaxation time of R-GNRA around the plasmonic peak is 13.9 ± 0.4 ps, which is more than 4 times longer than those of the individual gold nanostructures distributed in water solutions. The Finite-difference time domain simulations demonstrate that this large enhancement of χ⁽³⁾ and slow down of τ are caused by the gap-induced large local field enhancement of GNRs dimers in R-GNRA. These significant results offer great opportunities for plasmonic nanostructures in applications of photonic and photocatalytic devices.

Highly tunable nonlinear response of Au@WS2 hybrids with plasmon resonance and anti-Stokes effect

We synthesize Au@WS2 hybrid nanobelts and investigate their third-order nonlinear responses mediated by a strong anti-Stokes effect. By using the femtosecond Z-scan technique and tuning the excitation photon energy (Eexc), we find the sign reversals of both nonlinear absorption coefficient β and nonlinear refractive index γ to be around 1.60 eV, which is prominently higher than the bandgap (1.35 eV) of WS2 bulk owing to the strong anti-Stokes processes around the bandgap of the indirect semiconductors. The saturable absorption and self-defocusing of the WS2 nanobelts are significantly enhanced by the plasmon resonance of the Au nanoparticles when Eexc > 1.60 eV. But the excited state absorption assisted by the anti-Stokes processes and the self-focusing observed at Eexc < 1.60 eV are suppressed by the surface plasmon. Furthermore, by using population rate equations, we theoretically analyze the sign reversals of both β and γ and reveal the physical mechanism of the unique nonlinear responses of the hybrids with the plasmon resonance and anti-Stokes effect. These observations enrich the understanding of the nonlinear processes and interactions between the plasmon and exciton and are helpful for developing nonlinear optical nanodevices.
