A general strategy for the functionalization of two-dimensional metal chalcogenides

3D self-assembled indium sulfide nanoreactor for in-situ surface covalent functionalization: Towards high-performance room-temperature NO2 sensing

Thiol functionalization of two-dimensional (2D) metal sulfides has been demonstrated as an effective approach to enhance the sensing performances. However, most thiol functionalization is realized by multiple-step approaches in liquid medium and depends on the dispersity of 2D materials. Here, we utilize a three-dimensional (3D) In₂S₃ nano-porous structure that self-assembled from 2D components as the nanoreactor, in which the surface-absorbed thiol molecules from the chemical residues of the nanoreactor are used for the in-situ covalent functionalization. Such functionalization is realized by facile heat the nanoreactor at 100 °C, leading to the recombing sulfur vacancies with thiol-terminated groups. The NO₂ sensing performances of such functionalized nanoreactor are investigated at room temperature, in which In₂S₃-100 exhibits a response magnitude of 21.5 towards 10 ppm NO₂ with full reversibility, high selectivity, and excellent repeatability. Such high-performance gas sensors can be attributed to the additional electrons that transferring from the functional group into the host, thus significantly modifying the electronic band structure. This work provides a guideline for the facile in-situ functionalization of metal sulfides and an efficient strategy for the high performances gas sensors without external stimulus.

Fundamental Properties of Hydrogen-Functionalized GaSe Monolayer

Functionalization reveals potential opportunities for modifying essential properties and designing materials due to the strong interaction between functionalized atoms and the surface. Among them, hydrogenation possesses such a way to control electronic and optical characteristics. In this paper, the stability and transformed electronic, optical properties of H-functionalized GaSe in two cases (single and double sites) were reported that exhibit the effects of hydrogen functionalization via first-principles calculations. Formation energies suggest that H-functionalized GaSe systems are stable for construction. H-GaSe and 2H-GaSe display distinct properties based on the functionalized way (single- or double-site functionalization). Accordingly, H-GaSe is metallic, while 2H-GaSe belongs to a semiconductor. The magnetic configuration with ferro- and anti-ferromagnetic could be found in H- and 2H-functionalized cases through spin distribution, respectively. Especially, the chemical hybridized bonds of Se-H, Ga-Se, and Ga-Ga corresponding to s-sp³ and sp³-sp³ bondings, respectively, are clearly verified in the orbital-projected density of states and charge density. The optical properties of 2H-GaSe could provide the main characteristics of a semiconductor, which is the limited range of transparency by electronic absorption at short and long wavelengths. Moreover, increasing the number of GaSe segments (L) could change the band gap leading to application in the band gap engineering of the 2H-GaSe systems. Thus, hydrogen functionalization could provide the possible manner for adjusting and controlling features of GaSe, promising for the development of electronic devices and applications.

Defect-rich, negatively-charged SnS2 nanosheets for efficient photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction and organic dye adsorption in water

Nanostructures of layered materials have gained increasing attention in photocatalytic and water-treatment processes. Herein, we report on sub-30 nm SnS₂ nanosheets (NSs) which can perform photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) quite efficiently on one hand, while removes large quantities of toxic organic dye molecules by choosing an adsorption mode of operation over photo-degradation on the other hand, unlike most other SnS₂ nanostructures. The NSs have a highly extended crystallinity growing perpendicular to the (001) lattice direction but exhibit poor X-ray diffraction for the 10 l (1 = 1,2,3…) lattice planes. With such defects, the NSs have a narrow bandgap of 2.21 eV and exhibit a significant photocurrent density at near band-edge illumination. Cr(VI) photo-reduction using the SnS₂ NSs follows a first-order reaction kinetics (rate constant of 0.10 min-1), five-fold higher than commercial TiO₂ (P-25). Furthermore, the NSs adsorb Rhodamine B dye molecules from an aqueous solution by forming a monolayer of dye molecules following a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and exhibit an adsorption capacity of ∼ 53.28 mg/g. We show that the NSs have a Zeta potential of ∼ -22 eV and preferably adsorb cationic dyes only. Thus the SnS₂ NSs can be effective for Cr(VI) contaminated waste-water treatment in a photocatalytic manner and can also act as a potential adsorbent for polluting dye molecules either in the presence or absence of sunlight. While both these activities are known for SnS₂ as well as other materials, the competitive nature of the two mechanisms while each of them is a possibility has never been investigated. Therefore, besides the high activities, the study highlights the presence of different active sites on the material surface that can respond preferentially to either inorganic or organic impurities.

Surface chemistry regulates the optical properties and cellular interactions of ultrasmall MoS2 quantum dots for biomedical applications

Molybdenum disulfide quantum dots (MoS2 QDs) have drawn increasing attention owing to their distinct optical properties and potential applications in many fields such as biosensing, photocatalysis and cell imaging. Elucidating the relationship between the surface chemistry of MoS2 QDs and their optical properties as well as biological behaviors is critical for their practical applications, which remain largely unclear. Herein, by adopting a sulfur vacancy modification strategy, a toolbox of MoS2 QDs functionalized with different thiolate ligands was prepared. The effect of surface chemistry on the optical properties of MoS2 QDs was systematically explored by various spectroscopic techniques, revealing the important role of surface ligands in defining their absorption band gap and luminescence quantum yield. Furthermore, cellular experiments showed that the cytotoxicity and intracellular fate (i.e., lysosomal accumulation) of MoS2 QDs are closely related to the properties of surface ligands. Our results underscore the important roles of surface ligands in regulating the properties and biological interactions of these QDs, which will facilitate the future development of MoS2-based materials with precisely controlled functions for biomedical applications.

Coordination-Driven Hierarchical Assembly of Hybrid Nanostructures Based on 2D Materials

2D materials have received tremendous scientific and engineering interests due to their remarkable properties and broad-ranging applications such as energy storage and conversion, catalysis, biomedicine, electronics, and so forth. To further enhance their performance and endow them with new functions, 2D materials are proposed to hybridize with other nanostructured building blocks, resulting in hybrid nanostructures with various morphologies and structures. The properties and functions of these hybrid nanostructures depend strongly on the interfacial interactions between 2D materials and other building blocks. Covalent and coordination bonds are two strong interactions that hold high potential in constructing these robust hybrid nanostructures based on 2D materials. However, most 2D materials are chemically inert, posing problems for the covalent assembly with other building blocks. There are usually coordination atoms in most of 2D materials and their derivatives, thus coordination interaction as a strong interfacial interaction has attracted much attention. In this review, recent progress on the coordination-driven hierarchical assembly based on 2D materials is summarized, focusing on the synthesis approaches, various architectures, and structure-property relationship. Furthermore, insights into the present challenges and future research directions are also presented.
