Stable-radicals increase the conductance and Seebeck coefficient of graphene nanoconstrictions

Enhancing the thermopower of single-molecule junctions by edge substitution effects

Heteroatom substitution and anchoring groups have an important impact on the thermoelectric properties of single-molecule junctions. Herein, thermoelectric properties of several anthracene derivative based single-molecule junctions are studied by means of first-principles calculations. In particular, we pay great attention to the edge substitution effects and find that edge substitution with nitrogen can induce a transmission peak near the Fermi energy, leading to large transmission coefficients and electrical conductance at the Fermi energy. Additionally, the steep shape of the transmission function gives rise to a high Seebeck coefficient. Therefore, an enhanced power factor can be expected. The robustness of this edge substitution effect has been examined by altering the electrode distance and introducing heteroatoms at different positions. The enhancement of the power factor due to edge substitution makes the studied single-molecule junction a promising candidate for efficient thermoelectric devices.

Radical Single-Molecule Junctions

Radicals are unique molecular systems for applications in electronic devices due to their open-shell electronic structures. Radicals can function as good electrical conductors and switches in molecular circuits while also holding great promise in the field of molecular spintronics. However, it is both challenging to create stable, persistent radicals and to understand their properties in molecular junctions. The goal of this Perspective is to address this dual challenge by providing design principles for the synthesis of stable radicals relevant to molecular junctions, as well as offering current insight into the electronic properties of radicals in single-molecule devices. By exploring both the chemical and physical properties of established radical systems, we will facilitate increased exploration and development of radical-based molecular systems.

Thermoelectric Performance of Polypropylene/Carbon Nanotube/Ionic Liquid Composites and Its Dependence on Electron Beam Irradiation

The thermoelectric behavior of polypropylene (PP) based nanocomposites containing single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and five kinds of ionic liquids (Ils) dependent on composite composition and electron beam irradiation (EB) was studied. Therefore, several samples were melt-mixed in a micro compounder, while five Ils with sufficiently different anions and/or cations were incorporated into the PP/SWCNT composites followed by an EB treatment for selected composites. Extensive investigations were carried out considering the electrical, thermal, mechanical, rheological, morphological and, most significantly, thermoelectric properties. It was found that it is possible to prepare n-type melt-mixed polymer composites from p-type commercial SWCNTs with relatively high Seebeck coefficients when adding four of the selected Ils. The highest Seebeck coefficients achieved in this study were +49.3 µV/K (PP/2 wt.% SWCNT) for p-type composites and −27.6 µV/K (PP/2 wt.% SWCNT/4 wt.% IL type AMIM Cl) for n-type composites. Generally, the type of IL is decisive whether p- or n-type thermoelectric behavior is achieved. After IL addition higher volume conductivity could be reached. Electron beam treatment of PP/SWCNT leads to increased values of the Seebeck coefficient, whereas the EB treated sample with IL (AMIM Cl) shows a less negative Seebeck coefficient value.

Enhanced thermopower in covalent graphite-molecule contacts

The Seebeck effect is very attractive for technological applications as it leads to the direct conversion of heat into electricity. One of the key quantities determining the efficiency of such conversion is the thermopower S. In this paper we explore theoretically what electronic properties are responsible for the Seebeck effect in molecular junctions with graphite or graphene electrodes. We propose that S can be enhanced because of the combined effect of the dip in the density of states at the Fermi energy of these materials and the molecular resonance. Then to understand the impact of the covalent vs. non-covalent molecule-carbon bonding we calculate from first principles the electronic and transport properties of graphite/molecule/Au junctions, where both types of bonding have been reported experimentally. We ultimately predict that S is about 120 μV K^-1 at room temperature for a 3,5-dimethyl-4-aminobenzene (DMAB) molecule covalently attached to the graphite electrode. This value is one order of magnitude larger than the typical values measured to date for molecular junctions and it is a signature of the direct C-C molecule-graphite bond. Finally we also demonstrate how one can control not just the absolute magnitude of S, but also its sign by designing the graphite-molecule contact. Our results lead the way towards the use of junctions with molecules covalently attached to a C-based substrate as possible new improved platforms for molecular thermoelectric devices.
