Enhanced Room-Temperature Photoluminescence Quantum Yield in Morphology Controlled J-Aggregates

Supramolecular assemblies from organic dyes forming J-aggregates are known to exhibit narrowband photoluminescence with full-width at half maximum of ≈9 nm (260 cm-1). Applications of these high color purity emitters, however, are hampered by the rather low photoluminescence quantum yields reported for cyanine J-aggregates, even when formed in solution. Here, it is demonstrated that cyanine J-aggregates can reach an order of magnitude higher photoluminescence quantum yield (increase from 5% to 60%) in blend solutions of water and alkylamines at room temperature. By means of time-resolved photoluminescence studies, an increase in the exciton lifetime as a result of the suppression of non-radiative processes is shown. Small-angle neutron scattering studies suggest a necessary condition for the formation of such highly emissive J-aggregates: the presence of a sharp water/amine interface for J-aggregate assembly and the coexistence of nanoscale-sized water and amine domains to restrict the J-aggregate size and solubilize monomers, respectively.

Water soluble PEGylated phenothiazines as valuable building blocks for bio-materials

The paper reports a series of three new PEGylated phenothiazine derivatives which keep the potential of valuable building blocks for preparing eco-materials addressed to a large realm of fields, from bio-medicine to opto-electronics. They were synthetized by connecting the hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) to the hydrophobic phenothiazine via an ether, ester, or amide linking group. The successful synthesis of the targeted polymers and their purity were demonstrated by NMR and FTIR spectroscopy methods. Their capacity to self-assembly in water was studied by DLS and UV-vis techniques and the particularities of the formed aggregates were investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy, SEM, AFM, POM and UV light microscopy. The biocompatibility was assessed on normal human dermal fibroblasts and human cervical cancer cells. The synthetized compounds showed the formation of luminescent aggregates and proved excellent biocompatibility on normal cells. In addition, a concentration dependent cytotoxicity against HeLa cancer cells was noticed for the PEGylated phenothiazine containing an ester unit.

Fabrication of Dipole-Aligned Thin Films of Porphyrin J-Aggregates over Large Surfaces

We report a new approach for large-scale alignment of micron-sized J-aggregates of a derivative of porphyrin onto planar glass substrates. We applied a unidirectional nitrogen flow to an aqueous dye drop deposited onto a glass substrate to form an about 5 nm thick film of aligned J-aggregates over macroscopic surface areas up to several millimeters. The inter-aggregate distance is ∼500 nm, and it scales with the nitrogen pressure. We verified the film thickness and J-aggregate alignment using multimodal microscopy and spectroscopy techniques. Our technique is fast, simple, and cost-effective for producing large two-dimensional (2-D) arrays of aligned emitters.
