Ligand- and metal-exchange reactions of robust nickel complexes with pentagonal bipyramidal structures

The coordination chemistries of transition metal complexes with pentagonal bipyramidal geometries were investigated, and the highly stable nature of a cyclic pentapyridyl ligand was disclosed. A NiCl2 complex with the pentapyridyl ligand was found to be stable toward water and acidic conditions. The stable complex underwent ligand-exchange reactions with nucleophilic reagents, and a series of pentagonal bipyramidal complexes with different apical ligands was prepared. Crystallographic analyses with the aid of theoretical calculations revealed that the complexes were constructed by electrostatic threading of a divalent linear nickel complex into the ring of the neutral, cyclic pentapyridyl, which resulted in robust water- and acid-resistant complexes with unique pentagonal bipyramidal structures. A reductive metal exchange reaction was then discovered, which enabled "linear divalent metal + electrostatic ring" formulations with different metal atoms.

Meso-Formyl, Vinyl, and Ethynyl Porphyrins-Multipotent Synthons for Obtaining a Diverse Array of Functional Derivatives

This review presents a strategy for obtaining various functional derivatives of tetrapyrrole compounds based on transformations of unsaturated carbon-oxygen and carbon-carbon bonds of the substituents at the meso position (meso-formyl, vinyl, and ethynyl porphyrins). First, synthetic approaches to the preparation of these precursors are described. Then diverse pathways for the transformations of the multipotent synthons are discussed, revealing a variety of products of such reactions. The structures, electronic, and optical properties of the compounds obtained by the methods under consideration are analyzed. In addition, there is an overview of the applications of the products obtained. Biomedical use of the compounds is among the most important. Finally, the advantages of using the reviewed synthetic strategy to obtain dyes with targeted properties are highlighted.

A porphyrin pentamer as a bright emitter for NIR OLEDs

The luminescence and electroluminescence of an ethyne-linked zinc(ii) porphyrin pentamer have been investigated, by testing blends in two different conjugated polymer matrices, at a range of concentrations. The best results were obtained for blends with the conjugated polymer PIDT-2TPD, at a porphyrin loading of 1 wt%. This host matrix was selected because the excellent overlap between its emission spectrum and the low-energy region of the absorption spectrum of the porphyrin oligomer leads to efficient energy transfer. Thin films of this blend exhibit intense fluorescence in the near-infrared (NIR), with a peak emission wavelength of 886 nm and a photoluminescent quantum yield (PLQY) of 27% in the solid state. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) fabricated with this blend as the emissive layer achieve average external quantum efficiencies (EQE) of 2.0% with peak emission at 830 nm and a turn-on voltage of 1.6 V. This performance is remarkable for a singlet NIR-emitter; 93% of the photons are emitted in the NIR (λ > 700 nm), indicating that conjugated porphyrin oligomers are promising emitters for non-toxic NIR OLEDs.

Anion-enhanced excited state charge separation in a spiro-locked N-heterocycle-fused push-pull zinc porphyrin

A new type of push–pull charge transfer complex, viz., a spiro-locked N-heterocycle-fused zinc porphyrin, ZnP-SQ, is shown to undergo excited state charge separation, which is enhanced by axial F⁻ binding to the Zn center. In this push–pull design, the spiro-quinone group acts as a ‘lock’ promoting charge transfer interactions by constraining mutual coplanarity of the meso-phenol-substituted electron-rich Zn(ii) porphyrin and an electron deficient N-heterocycle, as revealed by electrochemical and computational studies. Spectroelectrochemical studies have been used to identify the spectra of charge separated states, and charge separation upon photoexcitation of ZnP has been unequivocally established by using transient absorption spectroscopic techniques covering wide spatial and temporal regions. Further, global target analysis of the transient data using GloTarAn software is used to obtain the lifetimes of different photochemical events and reveal that fluoride anion complexation stabilizes the charge separated state to an appreciable extent.

Distortions, deviations and alternative facts: reliability in crystallography

This feature article is derived from the author's presentation of the Lonsdale lecture at the BCA Spring Meeting in 2018. One of the research results for which Kathleen Lonsdale is best known was her 1929 demonstration that the benzene ring in crystalline hexa-methyl-benzene is planar and has essentially hexagonal symmetry, resolving decades of dispute among organic chemists. More recent crystallographic studies of hexa-methyl-benzene have shown that there are actually small deviations from planarity. Such deviations for aromatic compounds may be due to electronic, steric, and/or intermolecular factors. Some substituted benzene molecules display remarkably large deviations, both from a planar ring structure and from regular hexagonal angular geometry around the ring. Starting from this specific connection with Kathleen Lonsdale's research, a number of stories are recounted of structural distortions and deviations from expected results and explanations that have been suggested for them, across a wide range of chemical topics including macrocycles, metal clusters, unusual coordination geometry and isomerism. On the way we find genuine surprises and results that have led to new understanding, but also examples of poor experiments, misinterpretation of data, scientific bias and preconceived ideas, incompetence and even deliberate fraud. Some aspects of structure validation are discussed. While showcasing some interesting research in its own right, this account also serves an educational purpose.
