Abstract
Although alkynes are one of the smallest functional groups, they are among the most versatile building blocks for organic chemistry, with applications ranging from biochemistry to material sciences. Alkynylation reactions have traditionally relied on the use of acetylenes as nucleophiles. The discovery and development of ethynyl hypervalent iodine reagents have allowed to greatly expand the transfer of alkynes as electrophilic synthons. In this feature article the progress in the field since 2018 will be presented. After a short introduction on alkynylation reactions and hypervalent iodine reagents, the developments in the synthesis of alkynyl hypervalent iodine reagents will be discussed. Their recent use in base-mediated and transition-metal catalyzed alkynylations will be described. Progress in radical-based alkynylations and atom-economical transformations will then be presented.

Abstract
In the direct C–H arylation with arylhalogenides in the presence of Pd(OAc)2, trifluoromethyl-containing antipyrine reacts very slowly and incompletely owing to the low nucleophilicity of its C4 center. However, it was effective in modifying polyfluoroalkyl-substituted 4-bromo- and 4-iodo antipyrines by the Suzuki and Sonogashira reactions. It was established that using Pd2(dba)3 as catalyst and XPhos as phosphine ligand was the optimal catalytic system for the synthesis of 4-aryl- and 4-phenylethynyl-3-polyfluoroalkyl-antipyrines. Moreover, iodo-derivatives as the initial reagents were found to be more advantageous compared to bromo-containing analogs. It was found that 4-phenylethynyl-5-CF3-antipyrine has a moderate activity against the influenza virus A/Puerto Rico/8/34 (H1N1) and 4-iodo-5-CF3-antipyrine reveals a weak activity against the vaccine virus (strain Copenhagen) and bovine diarrhea virus (strain VC-1). Peculiarities of heterocyclic systems with electron-withdrawing groups (polyfluoroalkyl-containing antipyrines) in Pd-catalyzed C–H arylation and cross-coupling reactions.![]()

Abstract
A Pd(ii)-catalyzed direct functionalization reaction of the 4Csp2-H bond of antipyrine derivatives is reported. This metal-catalyzed reaction of antipyrines with maleimides provided an easy and efficient access to biologically important pyrazolonomaleimides. This catalytic system is also applicable for C-4 functionalization of the antipyrine ring with quinone derivatives.

Abstract
A copper-catalyzed sequential cyclization/migration reaction of alkynyl hydrazides for the synthesis of ring-expanded N-N fused pyrazolones was developed. Control experiments indicate that the copper-ligand complex plays an essential role in the reaction. This approach features a broad scope including some functional group tolerance as well as a nucleophilic addition/1,3-migration/formal 1,2-migration sequence. This protocol provides simple manipulation and less waste due to high yield and atom economy. The synthetic utility of N-N fused pyrazolones was also demonstrated by further transformations.

Abstract
A cobalt(II)-catalyzed [4+2] annulation of picolinamides with alkynes via C-H bond activation has been developed. The operationally simple annulation reaction allows for the synthesis of acyl-substituted 1H-benzoquinoline bearing multiple aromatic rings (up to 96 % yield) without co-oxidant or other oxidation factors under mild conditions. Several control experiments were carried out. This practical [4+2] annulation provides an efficient route to access highly functionalized compounds.

Abstract
Over the last two decades, hypervalent iodine(iii) reagents have evolved from being 'bonding curiosities' to mainstream reagents in organic synthesis, in particular, electrophilic functional group transfer reactions. In this context, gold catalysts have not only emerged as a unique toolbox to facilitate such reactions (especially alkynylations) but also opened new possibilities with their different modes of reactivities for other functional group transfer reactions (acetoxylations and arylations). This feature article critically summarizes hitherto all such Au-catalyzed electrophilic functional group transfer reactions with hypervalent iodine(iii) reagents, emphasizing their mechanistic aspects.

Abstract
We describe the synthesis of α-alkynyl-β-substituted cyclic ketones and analogue chromanones via one-pot Michael addition/hypervalent iodine-based α-alkynylation. Cu(I)-catalyzed Michael addition using either alkyl-aluminum or Grignard reagents, followed by diastereoselective electrophilic alkynylation of the resulting enolate by 1-ethynyl-1λ3,2-benziodoxol-3(1H)-one (EBX) resulted in the α-alkynyl-β-substituted cyclic ketones or chromanones within 34-89% yield (16 examples). The reaction was successfully upscaled to the 5 mmol scale, and further functionalization of a model alkynylated ketone was demonstrated.
