Molecular design and synthesis of methoxy-substitued spiropyrans with photomodulated NIR-fluorescence

This study focuses on the molecular design and synthesis of salt spiropyrans with near-IR fluorescence. The structure of the obtained compounds was confirmed by NMR, IR and mass spectroscopy. In the course of studying the spectral and photoluminescent characteristics, it was possible to reveal the effect of some substituents in various positions on the properties of spiropyran dyes. Due to the structural similarity of one of the isomers to cyanine dyes, the obtained compounds are of interest as potential fluorescent probes for bioimagimg, in particular, for DNA studies. To reveal their ability of binding to DNA molecules molecular docking was carried out. Toxic effects of compounds demonstrating NIR fluorescence were studied on biofilms, as well as using bacterial lux-biosensors.

A Modern Look at Spiropyrans: From Single Molecules to Smart Materials

Photochromic compounds of the spiropyran family have two main isomers capable of inter-switching with UV or visible light. In the current review, we discuss recent advances in the synthesis, investigation of properties, and applications of spiropyran derivatives. Spiropyrans of the indoline series are in focus as the most promising representatives of multi-sensitive spirocyclic compounds, which can be switched by a number of external stimuli, including light, temperature, pH, presence of metal ions, and mechanical stress. Particular attention is paid to the structural features of molecules, their influence on photochromic properties, and the reactions taking place during isomerization, as the understanding of the structure-property relationships will rationalize the synthesis of compounds with predetermined characteristics. The main prospects for applications of spiropyrans in such fields as smart material production, molecular electronics and nanomachinery, sensing of environmental and biological molecules, and photopharmacology are also discussed.

Excited State Proton Transfers in Hybrid Compound Based on Indoline Spiropyran of the Coumarin Type and Azomethinocoumarin in the Presence of Metal Ions

Spectral-luminescence properties of a hybrid compound containing a coumarin-type spiropyran and an azomethinocoumarin fragment in toluene-acetonitrile solution in the presence of Li⁺, Ca²⁺, Zn²⁺ and Mg²⁺ ions are reported. Two excited state proton transfers can occur in the hybrid compound—the transfer of a proton from the OH group of the 7-hydroxy coumarin tautomer to the N atom of the C=N bond of the azomethine fragment leading to green ESIPT fluorescence with a maximum at 540 nm and from the OH group of the 7-hydroxy coumarin tautomer to the carbonyl group of the pyrone chromophore, which leads to the formation of the 2-hydroxyl-tautomer T of coumarin with blue fluorescence with a maximum at 475 nm. Dependence of these excited state proton transfers on the metal nature and irradiation with an external UV source is discussed.

Luminescent detection of pesticides by color changeable flexible coumarin-3-carboxylic acid/GdF3:Sm3+ composite film

The utilization and residue of pesticides exist multifaceted non-restrictive effects on food safety and ecological protection. Exploitation of rapid and sensitive pesticide detection technology is imperative and will be helpful to better control the detriment of pesticides. Here, a novel flexible film has been prepared based on organic-inorganic composite materials (coumarin-3-carboxylic acid and GdF₃:Sm³⁺), which exhibits good optical performance and can well realize the timely and maneuverable detection for different pesticides. The spectra and luminescence properties of each composition in the composite have been analyzed systematically, and the coordinated fluorescence emission of Sm³⁺ and coumarin-3-carboxylic acid is revealed at an excitation wavelength of 373 nm. Besides, the energy transfer mechanism is also researched by both experiment and theoretical calculation. The actual detection of different pesticides reveals differential fluorescence influence degree. Meanwhile, the flexible film still possesses sensitive recognition in the presence of micro concentration of pesticides. Results indicate that the flexible film with good optical performance can produce visual detection ability and provide a promising strategy for wider detection applications.
