Emulsion-based, flexible and recyclable aerogel composites for latent heat storage

Although emulsion-based, phase change material-encapsulated monolithic composites are promising for latent heat storage, their rigidity and non-recyclability imposed by the relatively dense covalent crosslinking hinder the composites from real applications. Herein, we report the fabrication of aerogel composites with flexibility and recyclability from cellulose nanocrystal-stabilized, octadecane-encapsulated Pickering emulsions solidified using physical gelation. The resulting monolithic composites exhibited controllable external shapes, and the introduction of poly(vinyl alcohol) significantly reduced the leakage of the encapsulated octadecane. The aerogel composites showed flexibility at temperature over 30 °C, and robust compressive behavior, without fracture at 70% compressive strain. The composites possessed similar heat storage (melting) temperature and heat release (crystallization) temperature to that of bulk octadecane, high heat capacity (up to 253 J^.g^-1) and high reusability, without obvious deterioration in heat capacity after 100 heating-cooling cycles. Moreover, the aerogel composites exhibited recyclability, simply by dissolving the composites in hot water to form emulsions and then by freeze drying to form aerogel composites. The flexibility and recyclability, together with robust compression, controllable external shapes, high heat capacity and good reusability, make the aerogel composites to be excellent candidates for latent heat storage.

Temperature-Sensitive Anti-Inflammatory Organohydrogels Containing Janus Particle Stabilized Phase-Change Microinclusions

A fabrication strategy for multifunctional organohydrogels is proposed, which combines phase-change microinclusions within a double-network (DN) hydrogel under the stabilization of Janus particles. Janus particles possess reactivity and colloidal stability for more robust organohydrogels, while the interstice among Janus particles enhances the mass transfer between the phase interfaces. Moreover, DN hydrogels are achieved through dynamic cross-linking networks, endowing organohydrogels with injectability and self-healing performance. Phase-change microinclusions are beneficial to the organohydrogels with temperature-responsive mechanical property and temperature-programed shape-memory performance. Organohydrogels can be employed for temperature therapy through the melting-crystallization process of phase-change microinclusions. Simultaneously, the payloads within microinclusions can be released for antibacteria upon melting the encapsulated wax. The organohydrogels can be served as an ideal dressing with temperature-responsive mechanical property, temperature therapy effectiveness, and temperature-triggered antibacterial ability.

Emulsion-Templated, Magnetic, Hydrophilic-Oleophobic Composites for Controlled Water Removal

Emulsion-templated, hydrophilic-oleophobic porous materials are promising for the removal of a small amount of water from oil-water mixtures, but the maneuver and complete collection of these porous materials are challenging. Herein, we report the fabrication of magnetic, hydrophilic-oleophobic polyHIPE composites from reactive Fe₃O₄ nanoparticle-stabilized high internal phase emulsions through simultaneous bulk polymerization of water-soluble monomers and interface-catalyzed polycondensation of 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane. The resulting composites were hydrophilic-oleophobic, with water droplets rapidly absorbed (within 20 s), and exhibited designable magnetic responsiveness. The hydrophilicity-oleophobicity enabled water to be removed through selective absorption from oil-water mixtures (including surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil emulsions), with a high separation rate over 99%. The magnetic-responsiveness enabled both the dry and the swollen composites to be maneuvered in a remote and contactless manner and to be fully collected. Therefore, the magnetic, hydrophilic-oleophobic polyHIPE composites are excellent candidates for the removal of water from water-oil mixtures with complete collection.

Interconnectivity and morphology control of poly-high internal phase emulsions under photo-polymerization

We here demonstrate that the interconnectivity and morphology of photo-polymerized HIPEs can be controlled by changing the type of initiators and stabilizers, and the intensity of light.

Thermoreversible Polymer Gels in DMF Formed from Charge- and Crystallization-Induced Assembly

Polymer organogels formed through dynamic interactions are interesting for various applications. The fabrication of polymer organogels in polar solvents through ionic interaction is rare, although such organogels in non-polar organic solvents have been well studied. Herein, polymer organogels in a polar solvent N,N-dimethyl formamide (DMF) were fabricated from a triblock copolymer, poly(4-vinyl pyridine)-block-poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (4VPm-EGn-4VPm), and a fluorinated surfactant, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), and their microphase separation and properties were studied. Ordered microphase separation and the crystalline structures were revealed by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), respectively. All the 4VPm-EGn-4VPm/PFOA organogels are sensitive to temperature, and the ratio of PFOA to pyridine groups reversibly. The polymer organogels are also responsive to triethylamine and triethylammonium acetate.

Encapsulating an organic phase change material within emulsion-templated poly(urethane urea)s

Interfacial step growth polymerization within oil-in-water high internal phase emulsions was used to synthesize poly(urethane urea) monoliths, consisting of 90% organic phase change material encapsulated within micrometer-scale capsules, for thermal energy storage and release applications.
