Regioselective Seeded Polymerization in Block Copolymer Nanoparticles: Post‐Assembly Control of Colloidal Features

Post‐assembly modifications are efficient tools to adjust colloidal features of block copolymer (BCP) particles. However, existing methods often address particle shape, morphology, and chemical functionality individually. For simultaneous control, we transferred the concept of seeded polymerization to phase separated BCP particles. Key to our approach is the regioselective polymerization of (functional) monomers inside specific BCP domains. This was demonstrated in striped PS‐b‐P2VP ellipsoids. Here, polymerization of styrene preferably occurs in PS domains and increases PS lamellar thickness up to 5‐fold. The resulting asymmetric lamellar morphology also changes the particle shape, i.e., increases the aspect ratio. Using 4‐vinylbenzyl azide as co‐monomer, azides as chemical functionalities can be added selectively to the PS domains. Overall, our simple and versatile method gives access to various multifunctional BCP colloids from a single batch of pre‐formed particles.

Effect of Site-Specific Functionalization on the Shape of Nonspherical Block Copolymer Particles

Shape-anisotropic polymeric colloids having chemically distinct compartments are promising materials, however, introducing site-specific surface functionality to block copolymer (BCP) particles has not yet been actively investigated. The current contribution demonstrates the selective surface functionalization of nanostructured, ellipsoidal polystyrene-b-polybutadiene (PS-b-PB) particle and investigate their effects on the particle shape. Photo-induced thiol-ene click reaction was used as a selective functionalization chemistry for modifying the PB block, which was achieved by controlling the feed ratio of functional thiols to the double bonds in PB. Importantly, the controlled particle elongation was observed as a function of the degree of PB functionalization. Such an increase in the aspect ratio is attributed to the (i) increased incompatibility of the PS and modified PB block and (ii) the reduced surface tension between the particles and surrounding aqueous medium, both of which contributes to the further elongation of ellipsoids. Further tunability of the elongation behavior of ellipsoids was further demonstrated by controlling the particle size and chemical structure of functional thiols, showing the versatility of this approach for controlling the particle shape. Finally, the utility of surface functionality was demonstrated by the facile complexation of fluorescent dye on the modified surface of the particle via favorable interaction, which showed stable fluorescence and colloidal dispersity.

A nanopatterned dual reactive surface driven by block copolymer self-assembly

Herein, we report the selective functionalization of nano-domains obtained by the self-assembly of a polystyrene-block-poly(vinyl benzyl azide) PS-b-PVBN₃ copolymer synthesized in three steps. First, a polystyrene macro-initiator was synthesized, and then extended with vinyl benzyl chloride by nitroxide mediated polymerization to form polystyrene-block-poly(vinyl benzyl chloride) PS-b-PVBC. Nucleophilic substitution of vinyl benzyl chloride into a vinyl benzyl azide moiety is finally performed to obtain PS-b-PVBN₃ which self-assembled into nano-domains of vinyl benzyl azide PVBN₃. Click chemistry was then used to bind functional gold nanoparticles and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) on PVBN₃ domains due to the specific anchoring at the surface of the nanopatterned film. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to observe the block copolymer self-assembly and the alignment of the gold nanoparticles at the surface of the PVBN₃ nanodomains. Thorough X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis of the functional film showed evidence of the sequential grafting of nanoparticles and PNIPAM. The hybrid surface expresses thermo-responsive properties and serves as a pattern to perfectly align and control the assembly of inorganic particles at the nanoscale.

Making the best of it: nitroxide-mediated polymerization of methacrylates via the copolymerization approach with functional styrenics

The addition of 5 mol% of functional styrenics imparts control to the SG1-mediated polymerization of methacrylates and provides access to nanostructured functional methacrylic materials.

Quantitative Comparison of Dye and Ultrasmall Fluorescent Silica Core-Shell Nanoparticle Probes for Optical Super-Resolution Imaging of Model Block Copolymer Thin Film Surfaces

In recent years, high-resolution optical imaging in the far field has provided opportunities for alternative approaches to nanocharacterization traditionally dominated by electron and scanning probe microscopies. Here, we report the optical super-resolution imaging of model block copolymer (BCP) thin film surface nanostructures through stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy (STORM). We compare a set of surface-functionalized fluorescent core-shell silica nanoparticles encapsulating two different organic dyes, Cy3 and Cy5, with the corresponding free dyes in STORM. Using various click-type chemistries, these probes are covalently attached to the surface of specific blocks of BCP thin films, enabling selective block labeling and optical visualization. We demonstrate that the enhanced brightness of these particle probes offers distinct advantages over conventional dye labeling, outperforming one of the best STORM dyes available (Cy5).

CO2-Driven reversible wettability in a reactive hierarchically patterned bio-inspired honeycomb film

A triple structured honeycomb film is fabricated through block copolymer directed self-assembly in “Breath Figure” templating as a clickable patterned platform to enhance its reversible surface wettability between hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity upon a biological CO₂ trigger.
