Application of Biomass Materials in Zinc-Ion Batteries

Currently, aqueous zinc-ion batteries, with large reserves of zinc metal and maturity of production, are a promising alternative to sustainable energy storage. Nevertheless, aqueous solution has poor frost resistance and is prone to side reactions. In addition, zinc dendrites also limit the performance of zinc-ion batteries. Biomass, with complex molecular structure and abundant functional groups, makes it have great application prospects. In this review, the research progress of biomass and its derived materials used in zinc-ion batteries are reviewed. The different regulation strategies and characteristics of biomass used in zinc-ion battery electrodes, electrolyte separators and binders are demonstrated. The regulation mechanism is analyzed. At the end, the development prospect and challenges of biomass in energy materials application are proposed.

Visible light photocatalytic and magnetic properties of V doped α-Fe2O3 (VFO) nanoparticles synthesized by polyol assisted hydrothermal method

Vanadium-doped α-Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles (VFO nanoparticles) were prepared by polyol-assisted hydrothermal method. The impact on the structure, optical, magnetic and photocatalytic properties of α-Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles were studied by varying the vanadium concentration from 1 to 5%. XRD analysis confirms the presence of hematite phase with hexagonal structure and estimates the nanocrystals size as ∼26-38 nm. FESEM and TEM reveal the formation of 3D flower-like morphology bundled with 2D nanoflakes. The estimated band gap energy was in the range 2.01 eV-2.12 eV. XPS study shows the presence of vanadium in V⁴⁺ oxidation state in VFO nanoparticles. VSM study shows a non-saturated hysteresis loop with weak ferromagnetic behavior for all the VFO nanoparticles. 5% V doped α-Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles (5%VFO nanoparticles) exhibited superior visible light driven photocatalytic activity compared to other samples.

A dual-functional flexible sensor based on defects-free Co-doped ZnO nanorods decorated with CoO clusters towards pH and glucose monitoring of fruit juices and human fluids

Herein, ZnO nanorods were doped with Co and decorated with CoO clusters through an in situ technique to create a CoO/Co-doped ZnO (CO/CZO) heterostructure at low temperatures (150 °C) on a flexible PET substrate. In the CO/CZO heterostructure, the Co dopant has a low energy barrier to substitute Zn atoms and adsorb over oxygen atoms and their vacancies. Therefore, it decreased the charge density (ND = 2.64 × 1019 cm-3) on non-active sites of ZnO and lowered the charge transfer resistance (317 Ω) at Co-doped-ZnO/electrolyte interface by suppressing the native defects and reducing the Schottky barrier height (- 0.35 eV), respectively. Furthermore, CoO clusters induced a p-n heterostructure with Co-doped ZnO, prevented corrosion, increased the active sites for analyte absorption, and increased the ultimate tensile strength (4.85 N m-2). These characteristics enabled the CO/CZO heterostructure to work as a highly sensitive, chemically stable, and flexible pH and glucose oxidation electrode. Therefore, CO/CZO heterostructure was explored for pH monitoring in human fluids and fruit juices, demonstrating a near-Nernst-limit pH sensitivity (52 mV/pH) and fast response time (19 s) in each human fluid and fruit juice. Also, it demonstrated high sensitivity (4656 µM mM-1 cm-2), low limit of detection (0.15 µM), a broad linear range (0.04 mM to 8.85 mM) and good anti-interference capacity towards glucose-sensing. Moreover, it demonstrated excellent flexibility performances, retained 53% and 69% sensitivity of the initial value for pH and glucose sensors, respectively, after 500 bending, stretching, and warping cycles.

Environment-friendly degradable zinc-ion battery based on guar gum-cellulose aerogel electrolyte

With the vigorous development of electronics and the increasingly prominent problem of environmental pollution, it is particularly important to exploit environmentally friendly electronic devices. Transient electronics represent a kind of device that once the specified functions have completed can completely or partially disappear through physical or chemical actions. In this work, we introduce a novel guar gum-cellulose aerogel (GCA) membrane based on natural biomaterials and successfully use it as an electrolyte film to fabricate a degradable zinc-ion battery (DZIB). All components of the prepared DZIBs can be successfully degraded or disintegrate in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) containing a solution of proteinase K after approximately 40 days. This electrolyte film has a high ionic conductivity of approximately 4.73 × 10^-2 S cm^-1 and a good mechanical stress property. When applied to DZIB, the production of zinc dendrites can be restrained, leading to the battery showing excellent electrochemical performance. The battery exhibits a specific capacity of 309.1 mA h g^-1 at a current density of 308 mA g^-1 after 100 cycles and a steady cycling ability (100% capacity retention after 200 cycles). More importantly, the electrochemical performance of DZIB is better than that of transient batteries reported in the past, taking a solid step in the field of transient electronics in the initial stage.

Turning off the “shunt channel” by coating with CoFe layered double hydroxide nanocrystals for efficient photoelectrocatalytic water splitting

Tiny and crystalline CoFe(C) nanoparticles can close the “shunt channel” between the cocatalyst and the substrate, and the recombination of photogenerated charge caused by back-reaction is inhibited.

Interfacial Charge Transport in 1D TiO2 Based Photoelectrodes for Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

1D nanostructured photoelectrodes are promising for application as photoelectrochemical (PEC) devices for solar energy conversion into hydrogen (H₂ ) owing to the optical, structural, and electronic advantages. Titanium dioxide (TiO₂ ) is the most investigated candidate as a photoelectrode due to its good photostability, low production cost, and eco-friendliness. The obstacle for TiO₂ 's practical application is the inherent wide bandgap (UV-lights response), poor conductivity, and limited hole diffusion length. Here, a comprehensive review of the current research efforts toward the development of 1D TiO₂ based photoelectrodes for heterogeneous PEC water splitting is provided along with a discussion of nanoarchitectures and energy band engineering influences on interfacial charge transfer and separation of 1D TiO₂ composited with different dimensional photoactive materials. The key focus of this review is to understand the charge transfer processes at interfaces and the relationship between photogenerated charge separation and photoelectrochemical performance. It is anticipated that this review will afford enriched information on the rational designs of nanoarchitectures, doping, and heterojunction interfaces for 1D TiO₂ based photoelectrodes to achieve highly efficient solar energy conversion.

Enhancing photoelectrochemical performance of the Bi2MoO6 photoanode by ferroelectric polarization regulation

Photoelectrochemical water splitting provides a promising strategy for converting solar energy into chemical fuels and has attracted extensive interest. Herein, Bi₂MoO₆ nanopillars with large surface areas were fabricated on an ITO-coated glass substrate and their photoelectrochemical properties are enhanced through appropriate manipulation of ferroelectric polarization. The Bi₂MoO₆ photoanode with polarization orientation toward ITO shows an enhanced photocurrent density of 250 μA cm^-2 at 1.23 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode, which is 28% higher than that of pristine Bi₂MoO₆ nanopillars without macroscopic polarization. The corresponding depolarization electric field benefits the separation of light-excited electron-hole pairs, thus minimizing the recombination of charge carriers and further enhancing the photocurrent current density. Our work offers a new strategy of Bi₂MoO₆-based photoelectrochemical devices with great potential of application in the conversion of solar energy into chemical fuels.

Piezotronics and Piezo-phototronics of Third Generation Semiconductor Nanowires

With the fast development of nanoscience and nanotechnology in the last 30 years, semiconductor nanowires have been widely investigated in the areas of both electronics and optoelectronics. Among them, representatives of third generation semiconductors, such as ZnO and GaN, have relatively large spontaneous polarization along their longitudinal direction of the nanowires due to the asymmetric structure in their c-axis direction. Two-way or multiway couplings of piezoelectric, photoexcitation, and semiconductor properties have generated new research areas, such as piezotronics and piezo-phototronics. In this review, an in-depth discussion of the mechanisms and applications of nanowire-based piezotronics and piezo-phototronics is presented. Research on piezotronics and piezo-phototronics has drawn much attention since the effective manipulation of carrier transport, photoelectric properties, etc. through the application of simple mechanical stimuli and, conversely, since the design of new strain sensors based on the strain-induced change in semiconductor properties.
