A Highly Stable Multifunctional Bi-Based MOF for Rapid Visual Detection of S2- and H2S Gas with High Proton Conductivity

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) constructed with bismuth metal have not been widely reported, especially multifunctional Bi-MOFs. Therefore, developing multifunctional MOFs is of great significance due to the increasing requirements of materials. In this work, a 3D Bi-MOF (Bi-TCPE) with multifunctionality was successfully constructed, demonstrating high thermal stability, water stability, a porous structure, and strong blue fluorescence emission. We evaluated the properties of Bi-TCPE in detecting anions (S2-, Cr2O72-, and CrO42-) in aqueous solution, along with the rapid visual detection of H2S gas and proton conduction. In terms of anion detection, Bi-TCPE achieved the rapid detection of trace S2- in aqueous solutions, while the Ksv value was 1.224 × 104 M-1 with a limit of detection (LOD) value of 1.93 μM through titration experiments. Furthermore, Bi-TCPE could sensitively detect Cr2O72- and CrO42-, with Ksv values of 1.144 × 104 and 1.066 × 104 M-1, respectively, while LOD reached 2.07 and 2.18 μM. Subsequently, we conducted H2S gas detection experiments, and the results indicated that Bi-TCPE could selectively detect H2S gas at extremely low concentrations (2.08 ppm) and with a fast response time (<10 s). We also observed significant color changes under both UV light and sunlight. Therefore, we developed a H2S detection test paper for the rapid visual detection of H2S gas. Finally, we evaluated the proton conductivity of Bi-TCPE, and the experimental results showed that the proton conductivity of Bi-TCPE reached 4.77 × 10-2 S·cm-1 at 98% RH and 90 °C, achieving an excellent value for unmodified and encapsulated MOFs. In addition, Bi-TCPE showed high stability in proton conduction experiments (it remained stable after 21 consecutive days of testing and 12 cycles of testing), demonstrating relatively high application value. These results indicate that Bi-TCPE is a multifunctional MOF material with great application potential.

Th6-Based Multicomponent Heterometallic Metal-Organic Frameworks Featuring 6,12-Connected Topology for Iodine Adsorption

Its high coordination number and tendency to cluster make Th4+ suitable for constructing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with novel topologies. In this work, two novel thorium-based heterometallic MOF isomers (IHEP-17 and IHEP-18) were assembled from a Th6 cluster, a multifunctional organic ligand [4-(1H-pyrazol-4-yl)benzoic acid (HPyba)], and Cu2+/Ni2+ cations via the one-pot solvothermal synthesis strategy. The framework features a 6,12-connected new topology net and contains two kinds of supramolecular cage structures, Th36M4 and Th24M2, suitable for guest exchange. Both MOF materials can efficiently adsorb I2. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction indicate that the adsorbed iodine is uniformly distributed within the Th36M4 cage but not the Th24M2 cage in the form of I3-.

Energy-structure-property relationships in uranium metal-organic frameworks

Located at the foot of the periodic table, uranium is a relatively underexplored element possessing rich chemistry. In addition to its high relevance to nuclear power, uranium shows promise for small molecule activation and photocatalysis, among many other powerful functions. Researchers have used metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to harness uranium's properties, and in their quest to do so, have discovered remarkable structures and unique properties unobserved in traditional transition metal MOFs. More recently, (e.g. the last 8-10 years), theoretical calculations of framework energetics have supplemented structure-property studies in uranium MOFs (U-MOFs). In this Perspective, we summarize how these budding energy-structure-property relationships in U-MOFs enable a deeper understanding of chemical phenomena, enlarge chemical space, and elevate the field to targeted, rather than exploratory, discovery. Importantly, this Perspective encourages interdisciplinary connections between experimentalists and theorists by demonstrating how these collaborations have elevated the entire U-MOF field.

Trends in the Electronic Structure and Chemical Bonding of a Series of Porphyrinoid-Uranyl Complexes

In this paper, we have explored the relativistic density functional theory study on a series of deprotonated porphyrinoid (Lⁿ) complexes of uranyl to investigate the geometrical structures and chemical bonding. The ligands bound with uranyl in the 1:1 complexes [UO₂(Lⁿ)]^x (n = 4, 5, 6; x = 0, -1, -2), showing more thermodynamic stability for "in-cavity" structures of L⁵ and L⁶ than that of the "side-on" structure of L⁴ and an increase in stability with the increase of negative charges, L^2- < L^3- < L^4-. Among the six ligands, the cyclo[6]pyrrole presents the best selectivity toward uranyl. Based on chemical bonding analyses, the U-N_L bond in the in-cavity complexes adopts a typical dative N_L → U bond with mainly ionic bonding and significant covalency, which comes from the significant orbital interaction of U 5f_ϕ6d_δ7s hybrid AOs and N_L 2p-based MOs. This work provides a systematic understanding of the coordination chemistry in uranyl pyrrole-containing macrocycle complexes and the nature of chemical bonding in such systems, which may provide inspirations for the future design of synthetic targets that could be relevant to actinide separations or in the remediation of spent nuclear fuel.

Complexation and enantioselectivity of novel bridge-like uranyl- 2-((1Z,9Z)-9-(2-Hydroxyphenyl)-3,5,6,8-tetrahydrobenzo[h][1,4,7,10] dioxadiazacyclododecin-2-yl)-5-methoxyphenol with chiral organophosphorus pesticide enantiomers of R/S-malathions

Designing new uranyl complexes with enantioselectivity is of great significance for the identification and separation of enantiomers of chiral pesticides. In this paper, a new asymmetric rigid uranyl-2-((1Z,9Z)-9-(2-Hydroxyphenyl)-3,5,6,8-tetrahydrobenzo[h][1,4,7,10] dioxadiaza-cyclododecin-2-yl)-5-methoxyphenol(Uranyl-HTDM) was designed, we used Uranyl-HTDM as a receptor to selectively coordinate with the guests of the chiral organophosphorus pesticide R/S-malathions(R/S-MLTs) to explore the receptor's enatioselectivity recognition of the chiral guests of R/S-MLTs. Density functional theory (DFT) method was used to comprehensively study the complexation mode of the receptor with enantiomers. The results showed that the U of Uranyl-HTDM could coordinate with both the thiophosphoryl sulfur and carbonyl oxygens of R/S-MLTs in different environments, respectively. The thermodynamics calculations further indicated that the receptor could selectively recognize the thiophosphoryl sulfur and carbonyl oxygen atoms of R/S-malathions, and the complexation abilities of Uranyl-HTDM to the R/S-malathions under different solvents were not the same. The smaller the polarity of solvents, the stronger the complexation ability of Uranyl-HTDM with R-malathion, toluene was an ideal solvent with large △G change and enatioselectivity coefficient of 99.55%. The study provides useful references for the design of new uranyl-salophens and for the experimental study on the molecular recognition of chiral organophosphorus pesticides.

Modular Assembly of Isostructural Mixed-Ligand Uranyl Coordination Polymers Based on a Patterning Strategy

Controlling the orderly assembly of molecular building blocks for the formation of the desired architectural, chemical, and physical properties of the resulting solid-state materials remains a long-term goal and deserves to be examined. In this work, we propose a patterning strategy for modular assembly and structural regulation of mixed-ligand uranyl coordination polymers (CPs) through the combination of couples of organic ligands with complementary molecular geometry and well-matched coordination modes. By using a 5-(p-tolyldiazenyl)isophthalic acid ligand (H₂ptdi) with different rigid linear bicarboxylic acid linkers to construct a well-defined ladder-like pattern, five novel isostructural uranyl coordination polymers, [(UO)₂(ptdi)(bdc)_0.5](dma) (1), [(UO)₂(ptdi)(bpdc)_0.5](dma) (2), [(UO)₂(ptdi)(tpdc)_0.5](dma) (3), [(UO)₂(ptdi)(ndc)_0.5](dma) (4), and [(UO)₂(ptdi) (pdc)_0.5](dma) (5) {H₂bdc, 1,4-dicarboxybenzene; H₂bpdc, 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid; H₂tpdc, terphenyl-4,4″-dicarboxylic acid; H₂ndc, 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid; H₂pdc, 1,6-pyrenedicarboxylic acid; [dma]⁺, [(CH₃)₂NH₂]⁺}, were successfully synthesized. Structural analysis reveals that 1-5 have similar ladder-like units but different sizes of one-dimensional nanochannels and interlayer spacing due to the different lengths and widths of the linkers. Because of the changes in interlayer spacing of these isostructural cationic frameworks, differences in the performance of Eu³⁺ ion exchange with [dma]⁺ are observed. Moreover, those compounds with high phase purity have been further characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and luminescence spectroscopy, element analysis, PXRD and UV spectroscopy. Among them, compound 3 with strong fluorescence can selectively detect Fe³⁺ over several competing metal cations in aqueous solution. This work not only provides a feasible patterning method for effectively regulating the modular synthesis of functional coordination polymers but also enriches the library of uranyl-based coordination polymers with intriguing structures and functionality.

Syntheses, Structures, and Properties of Coordination Polymers with 2,5-Dihydroxy-1,4-Benzoquinone and 4,4'-Bipyridyl Synthesized by In Situ Hydrolysis Method

The coordination polymers (CPs) with binary ligands, including 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone (H2DHBQ) and 4,4'-bipyridyl (bpy), were synthesized using in situ hydrolysis of 2,5-dimethoxy-1,4-benzoquinone (DMBQ). Three kinds of CPs were obtained depending on the metal ions. For M = Mn and Zn, a 1D zigzag chain structure with cis conformation ( cis-1D-M) was obtained, whereas Co, Ni, and Cu compounds afforded a 2D net structure with trans conformation (trans -2D-M) with a 1D pore. A linear chain structure was also obtained for M = Cu. Magnetic susceptibility (χ_M T) at 300 K in cis -1D-Mn and trans -2D-Co was evaluated to be 4.421 and 2.950 cm³ K mol^-1, respectively, indicating that both compounds are in the high-spin state. According to the N₂ adsorption isotherms at 77 K, trans -2D-Ni showed microporosity with the BET surface area of 177 m² g^-1, whereas the isomorphic trans -2D-Co rarely adsorbed N₂ at 77 K. This phenomenon was explained by the difference of diffusion kinetics of the adsorbent molecules, which was supported by the CO₂ adsorption isotherms at 195 K. The optical band gaps of cis -1D-Mn, cis -1D-Zn, trans -2D-Co, and trans -2D-Ni were estimated to be 1.6, 1.8, 1.0, and 1.1 eV, respectively, by using UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy.

Hydrous titanium oxide and bayberry tannin co-immobilized nano collagen fibrils for uranium extraction from seawater and recovery from nuclear wastewater

Extraction uranium from complicated aqueous solutions (seawater and nuclear wastewater) has been promoting the development of multi-functional adsorbents with high adsorption capacities and high selectivity. Here, we proposed a co-immobilization approach to preparing uranium adsorbents. Due to specific recognition and binding between functional groups, bayberry tannin (BT) and hydrous titanium oxide (HTO) were co-immobilized onto nano collagen fibrils (NCFs). The adsorption performances of NCFs-HTO-BT to uranium were systematically investigated in two aqueous systems, including nuclear wastewater and seawater. Results proved that NCFs-HTO-BT possessed the remarkable adsorption capacities and affinities for uranium in wastewater (393.186 mg g^-1) and spiked seawater (14.878 mg g^-1) with the uranium concentration of 320 mg g^-1 and 8 mg g^-1, respectively. Based on characteristic analysis of the adsorbent before and after uranium adsorption, the hydroxyl groups of HTO, the adjacent phenolic hydroxyl groups of BT, and nitrogen-containing and oxygen-containing functional groups of NCFs were active sites for uranium adsorption.

Unveiling the Unique Roles of Metal Coordination and Modulator in the Polymorphism Control of Metal-Organic Frameworks

Polymorphism control of metal-organic frameworks is highly desired for elucidating structure-property relationships, but remains an empirical process and is usually done in a trial-and-error approach. We adopted the rarely used actinide cation Th⁴⁺ and a ditopic linker to construct a series of thorium-organic frameworks (TOFs) with a range of polymorphs. The extraordinary coordination versatility of Th⁴⁺ cations and clusters, coupled with synthetic modulation, gives five distinct phases, wherein the highest degree of interpenetration (threefold) and porosity (75.9 %) of TOFs have been achieved. Notably, the O atom on the capping site of the nine-coordinated Th⁴⁺ cation can function as a bridging unit to interconnect neighboring secondary building units (SBUs), affording topologies that are undocumented for other tetravalent-metal-containing MOFs. Furthermore, for the first time HCOOH has been demonstrated as a bridging unit of SBUs to further induce structural complexity. The resulting TOFs exhibit considerably different adsorption behaviors toward organic dyes, thus suggesting that TOFs represent an exceptional and promising platform for structure-property relationship study.

Double-Layer Nitrogen-Rich Two-Dimensional Anionic Uranyl-Organic Framework for Cation Dye Capture and Catalytic Fixation of Carbon Dioxide

A novel two-dimensional double-layer anionic uranyl-organic framework, U-TBPCA {[NH₂(CH₃)₂][(UO₂)(TBPCA)], where H₃TBPCA = 4,4',4″-s-triazine-1,3,5-triyltripamino-methylene-cyclohexane-carboxylate}, with abundant active sites and stability was obtained by assembling UO₂(NO₃)₂·6H₂O and a triazine tricarboxylate linker, TBPCA^3-. Due to the flexibility of the ligand and diverse coordination modes between carboxyl groups and uranyl ions, U-TBPCA exhibits an intriguing topological structure and steric configuration. This double-layer anionic uranyl-organic framework is highly porous and can be used for selective adsorption of cationic dyes. Due to the presence of high-density metal ions and basic -NH- groups, U-TBPCA acts as an effective heterogeneous catalyst for the cycloaddition reaction of carbon dioxide with epoxy compounds. Moreover, the various modes of coordination between the tricarboxylic ligand and uranyl ion were studied by density functional theory calculations, and several simplified models were established to probe the influence of hydrogen bonding between carbon dioxide and U-TBPCA on the ability of U-TBPCA to bind carbon dioxide. This work should aid in improving our understanding of the coordination behavior of uranyl ion as well as the development and utilization of new actinide materials.

Construction of Hybrid Bimetallic Uranyl Compounds Based on a Preassembled Terpyridine Metalloligand

Six hybrid uranyl-transition metal compounds [UO₂ Ni(cptpy)₂ (HCOO)₂ (DMF)(H₂ O)] (1), [UO₂ Ni(cptpy)₂ (BTPA)₂ ] (2), [UO₂ Fe(cptpy)₂ (HCOO)₂ (DMF)(H₂ O)] (3), [UO₂ Fe(cptpy)₂ (BTPA)₂ ] (4), [UO₂ Co(cptpy)₂ (HCOO)₂ (DMF)(H₂ O)] (5), and [UO₂ Co(cptpy)₂ (BTPA)₂ ] (6), based on bifunctional ligand 4'-(4-carboxyphenyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (Hcptpy) are reported (H₂ BTPA = 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid). Single-crystal XRD revealed that all six compounds feature similar metalloligands, which consist of two cptpy^- anions and one transition metal cation. The metalloligand M(cptpy)₂ can be considered to be an extended linear dicarboxylic ligand with length of 22.12 Å. Compounds 1, 3, and 5 are isomers, and all of them feature 1D chain structures. The adjacent 1D chains are connected together by hydrogen bonds and π-π interactions to form a 3D porous structure, which is filled with solvent molecules and can be exchanged with I₂ . Compounds 2, 4, and 6 are also isomers, and all of them feature 2D honeycomb (6,3) networks with hexagonal units of dimensions 41.91×26.89 Å, which are the largest among uranyl compounds with honeycomb networks. The large aperture allows two sets of equivalent networks to be entangled together to result in a 2D+2D→3D polycatenated framework. Remarkably, these uranyl compounds exhibit high catalytic activity for cycloaddition of carbon dioxide. Moreover, the geometric and electronic structures of compounds 1 and 2 are systematically discussed on the basis of DFT calculations.

In Situ Metal-Ligand Reactions under Solvent-Dependent Hydro(solvo)thermal Conditions: Structures, Mass Spectrometry, and Magnetism

In this study, four in situ hydro(solvo)thermal metal-ligand reactions, including oxidation (H₂L¹), C-C coupling (H₄L²), nitration (H₂L³), and condensation (HL^4-6), based on bis[3-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-1,2,4-triazol-5-yl]methane (H₂L⁰), in the presence of Dy^III ions, were carried out. The in situ metal-ligand reaction gave six new ligands existing in eight novel Dy^III coordination complexes, which were characterized by crystal structure, mass spectrometry, and magnetism.

Modulated synthesis and isoreticular expansion of Th-MOFs with record high pore volume and surface area for iodine adsorption

Isoreticular expansion of Th-MOFs via modulated synthesis yielded seven hierarchical complexes with superior quality single crystals, record high void space and BET surface area among Th materials, and exceptional iodine adsorption capacities.
