Abstract
Inspired by the distinguished photochemical characteristics of new organic molecule containing the chalcogenide substitution that could be potentially applied across various disciplines, in this work, the effects of atomic electronegativity of chalcogen (O, S and Se) on hydrogen bond interactions and proton transfer (PT) reaction. We present the characteristic 2,8-diphenyl-3,7-dihydroxy-4H,6H-pyrano[3,2-g]-chromene-4,6-dione (D3HF), which is based on 3-hydroxyflavone (3HF) and contains intramolecular double hydrogen bonds that is the main objective of this study to explore in detail the influence of the change of atomic electronegativity on the dual hydrogen bond interaction and the excited state proton transfer (ESPT) behavior by photoexcitation. By comparing the structural changes and infrared (IR) vibrational spectra of the D3HF derivatives (D3HF-O, D3HF-S and D3HF-Se) fluorophores in S0 and S1 states, combined with the preliminary detection of hydrogen bond interaction by core-valence bifurcation (CVB) index, we can conclude that the hydrogen bond is strengthened in S1 state, which is favorable for the occurrence of ESPT reactions. The charge recombination behavior of hydrogen bond induced by photoexcitation also further illustrates this point. Via constructing potential energy surfaces (PESs) based on restrictive optimization, we finally clarify the excited state single PT mechanism for D3HF derivatives. Specially, we confirm change of atomic electronegativity has a regulatory effect on the ESIPT behavior of D3HF and its derivatives, that is, the lower the atomic electronegativity is more conducive to the ESIPT reaction.

Abstract
4-Aminophthalimide is a highly fluorescent signaling unit with excellent photophysical properties and wide application foregrounds. Based on this, a range of theoretical investigations are conducted on the fluorescent probe (E)-5-((2-hydroxybenzylidene) amino) isoindoline-1, 3-dione (HID) with the core of 4-aminophthalimide using density functional theory (DFT) and time-containing density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods in this paper. The optimized configurations, vertical excitation and emission energies, electronic characteristics and excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) behaviors of the probe HID are discussed in detail. Furthermore, to enhance the luminescent properties of HID, five novel compounds have been designed based on the structure of HID by introducing amino, methoxy and naphthalene groups (-NH2, -OMe and C10H8). Our work thoroughly explores how the property and position of substituents and conjugation affect photophysical characteristics and ESIPT processes. We find that the ESIPT dynamics can be modulated by the substitution and conjugation effects. Specifically, the introduction of amino and methoxy groups at the ortho-position and the introduction of the naphthalene group promote the ESIPT behavior of HID1, whereas the introduction of amino and methoxy groups at the meta-position exhibits the contrary impact. Therefore, we boldly infer that the introduction of electron-donating groups in the ortho-position and the introduction of the conjugated group make the ESIPT process more effortless to occur, whereas the introduction of substituents with opposing natures in the meta-position makes the ESIPT process more difficult to occur. In addition, the ionization potentials (IP), electron affinities (EA) and reorganization energies (λh and λe) of molecules are calculated to assess their potential as luminescent materials. Our work not only reveals the luminescence and ESIPT mechanism of the probe HID1, but also proposes to modulate the ESIPT process through the substitution and conjugation effects. In particular, the designed molecules have better photoelectric properties as a result of their red-shifted absorption and fluorescence spectra, smaller energy gaps, larger transferred charges and greater charge transferred distances, which offers some valuable ideas for the experimental development of more efficient organic luminescent materials with ESIPT properties.

Abstract
Our main focus is to explore the atomic electronegativity-dependent photoinduced behavior of styryl derivatives (HBO, HBS, and HBSe). The results of structural parameter calculation by the DFT method show that the intramolecular hydrogen bonds of normal and tautomer form are strengthened and weakened, respectively, in an excited state (S1), which is conducive to the excited intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process. The enhancement of excited hydrogen bond is beneficial to the ESIPT process from the aspects of infrared vibration frequency (IR), Mulliken's charge analysis, and density gradient reduction (RDG). Additionally, by determining the bond energy with the band critical point (BCP) parameter, we found that the lower the electronegativity of the atom, the larger the hydrogen bond strength at the excited state and the more likely ESIPT reaction occurs. Meanwhile, the intramolecular H-bonds O-H…N in HBO, HBS, and HBSe are enhanced with the weakened electron-withdrawing capacity of the atom (from O to S and Se). Subsequently, frontier molecular orbital (FMOs) and charge density difference (CDD) analyses essentially revealed that electron redistribution induces the ESIPT process. Low atomic electronegativity exhibits the high chemical activity of the excited state. Furthermore, to demonstrate the electronegativity-dependent ESIPT behavior of the system, we built potential energy curves (PECs) and located the transition states (TS) of proton transfer processes.

Abstract
Inspired by the brilliant photochemical and photophysical properties of organic molecules containing chalcogenide substitutions that could be potentially applied across various disciplines, in this work, the effects of the atomic electronegativity of chalcogens (O, S, and Se) on hydrogen bond interactions and excited state proton transfer (ESPT) are mainly focused. We present characteristic oxygen-hydroxybenzazole-substituted 2,5-bis(4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)benzene-1,4-diol (BDIBD) derivatives that contain intramolecular double hydrogen bonds. The main objective of this study was to explore in detail the influence of the change of chalcogen atomic electronegativity on dual hydrogen bond interaction and ESPT behavior. By comparing the structural changes and infrared (IR) vibrational spectra of BDIBD derivative (BDIBD-O, BDIBD-S and BDIBD-Se) fluorophores in S0 and S1 states, combined with the preliminary detection of hydrogen bond interaction via the core-valence bifurcation (CVB) index and predicted hydrogen bonding energy (EHB), we conclude that dual hydrogen bonds should be strengthened in the S1 state, which is favorable for the occurrence of ESPT reactions. The charge recombination behavior of hydrogen bonds, induced by photoexcitation, further illustrates this point. By constructing potential energy surfaces (PESs) based on restrictive optimization and by searching the transition state (TS) structure, we finally elucidate stepwise excited-state double proton transfer (ESDPT). Specifically, we confirm that a change in atomic electronegativity has a regulatory effect on the ESDPT behavior in BDIBD derivatives, that is, lower atomic electronegativity is more conducive to stepwise ESDPT.

Abstract
The impact of the chalcogen atomic electronegativity (O, S, and Se atoms) of new organic molecules on excited-state dynamical reactions is self-evident. Inspired by this kind of distinguished photochemical characteristic, in this work, we performed a computational investigation of chalcogen-substituted 3,6-bis(4,5-dihydroxyoxazo-2-yl)benzene-1,2-diol (BDYBD) derivatives (i.e., BDYBD-O, BDYBD-S, and BDYBD-Se). In this paper, we pay close attention to characteristic BDYBD derivatives that contain intramolecular double hydrogen bonds (O1-H2···N3 and O4-H5···N6). The main goal of this study was to explore how changes in atomic electronegativity affect the way hydrogen bonds interact and how excited molecules affect transfer protons. We go into further detail in the main text of the paper. By fixing our attention to geometrical variations and infrared (IR) vibrational spectra between the S0 and S1 states, exploring hydrogen bonding behaviors using the core-valence bifurcation (CVB) index, and simulating hydrogen bonding energy (EHB) via the atom in molecule (AIM) method, we clarified the photo-induced strengthened dual hydrogen bonding interactions that facilitate the excited-state dual-proton transfer (ESDPT) behavior of BDYBD derivatives. The reorganization of charge stemming from photoexcitation further verifies the tendencies of ESDPT reactions. We relied on constructing potential energy surfaces (PESs) by adopting a restrictive optimization approach, and herein, we finally clarify the gradual ESDPT mechanism of BDYBD derivatives. Particularly, we confirm that the variation in chalcogen atomic electronegativity has a regulatory effect on the ESDPT behavior of BDYBD derivatives; that is, the lower the atomic electronegativity, the more favorable it is for the gradual ESDPT reaction.

Abstract
We present novel insights into the interplay between excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the 10-hydroxy-11H-benzo[b]fluoren-11-one (10-HHBF) molecule, utilizing the time-dependent density functional theory approach and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Our discoveries entail a reassessment of the luminescence mechanism for 10-HHBF, characterizing it as an ESIPT fluorophore. Additionally, we demonstrate that the molecule undergoes intersystem crossing (ISC) following proton transfer, which quenches the fluorescence of the proton-transferred state, thus resulting in the absence of dual emission and a limited spectral range of fluorescence. Furthermore, our investigation reveals that 10-HHBF displays an SOC enhancement feature induced by ESIPT, which facilitates the ISC process. This trait serves as a barrier to the application of 10-HHBF in single-molecule white light emitters (SMWLEs). Our findings underscore the notable influence of the ESIPT-induced spin-orbit interaction enhancement on luminescent properties, which necessitates consideration in the design of SMWLEs.

Abstract
Inspired by the distinguished regulated photochemical and photophysical properties of 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)benzazole derivatives, in this work, the novel bis(2'-benzothiazolyl)hydroquinone (BBTHQ) fluorophore is explored, looking at its photo-induced behaviors associated with different substituted atomic electronegativities, i.e., BBTHQ-SO, BBTHQ-SS and BBTHQ-Se compounds. From the structural changes, infrared (IR) vibrational variations and simulated core-valence bifurcation (CVB) indexes for the dual hydrogen bonds for the three BBTHQ derivatives, we see that low atomic electronegativity could be conducive to enhancing hydrogen bonding effects in the S1 state. Particularly, the O4-H5⋯N6 of BBTHQ-SO and the O1-H2⋯N3 of BBTHQ-SSe could be strengthened to be more intensive in the S1 state, respectively. Looking into the charge recombination induced by photoexcitation, we confirm a favorable ESDPT trend deriving from the charge reorganization of the dual hydrogen bonding regions. By constructing the potential energy surfaces (PESs) along with the ESDPT paths for the BBTHQ-SO, BBTHQ-SS and BBTHQ-Se compounds, we not only unveil stepwise ESDPT behaviors, but also present an atomic electronegativity-regulated ESDPT mechanism.

Abstract
CONTEXT In recent years, fluorescent probe technology has received more and more attention. However, the photophysical and photochemical properties of probe molecules still need to be further explored. This paper presents the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) processes and photophysical properties of the probe molecule 4-bromo-2-((E)-((Z)-((5-bromo-1H-indol-2-yl) methylene) hydrazono) methyl) phenol (BHPL) and its four derivatives (BHPL2, BHPL3, BHPL4, and BHPL5). Infrared spectra and geometric structure analyses revealed that introducing the -NH2 group on the benzene ring with the hydroxyl group will enhance the intramolecular hydrogen bond, which benefits the ESIPT process. Combining their absorption and fluorescence spectra, it can be concluded that BHPL2 and BHPL4 are both excellent probe candidates due to their large Stokes shift. The hole and electron and root mean square displacement analyses manifest that the fluorescence quenching of BHPL4 may be due to the intramolecular charge transfer process. Potential energy curves of BHPL and its four derivatives noted that ESIPT process of the BHPL2 is the most favorable to occur. The frontier molecular orbital and NBO analyses indicated that besides introducing electron-donating groups to reduce the energy gap and enhance fluorescence emission, introducing double electron-withdrawing groups can also achieve this effect, explaining why the energy barrier of ESIPT process for BHPL2 is lower than BHPL5. This work would provide the theoretical basis for designing novel fluorescence probes with more prominent properties. METHODS The ground (S0) and excited (S1) state structures of all compounds were optimized by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent (TDDFT) method, with B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) level, respectively. The infrared spectra and potential energy curves were simulated at the same theoretical level. The reduced density gradient scatter plots and interaction region indicator isosurfaces were drawn using Multiwfn and VMD programs. The absorption and fluorescence spectra were simulated by the TDDFT/B3PW91/6-311+G(d,p) method. All the calculations in this work are carried out in Gaussian 16 program package.

Abstract
In this present work, four novel molecules (BPN, BPNS, BPS, and BPSN), possessing excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) characteristics, were designed to quantify the impacts of substituent effects on their photophysical properties. By exploring the primary geometrical parameters concerning hydrogen bonds, it should be noticed that the intramolecular hydrogen bonds (IHBs) of the studied molecules have been strengthened at S1 state. Infrared vibrational spectra analysis illustrates that adding electron-donating group thiophene to the proton donor side can weaken the IHBs in comparison to the electron-withdrawing group pyridine. Through investigating the absorption and fluorescence spectra, it can be clearly found that the maximum absorption peaks of the studied molecules are all located in the UVA region, and their regions of fluorescence peaks are harmless to human skin. Furthermore, considering the light intensity factor, it can be concluded that BPNS is the most potential to be used as UV absorbers in the studied molecules. This work investigates the effects of the positions and types of substituent groups on photophysical properties of 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl) benzazoles derivatives, which can help design and exploit novel UV absorbers.

Abstract
The excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) mechanism, photophysical properties of 8-(benzo[D] thiazole-2-yl)-7-hydroxy-2H-benzopyran-2-one (L-HKS) and the effect of O/Se atomic substitution on L-HKS have been studied in detail based on density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) methods. The S atom in the thiazole ring of L-HKS has been replaced by O/Se atom (denoted to L-HKO/L-HKSe) to analyze the effects of atomic electronegativity on the intramolecular H-bond, absorption/emission spectrum and ESIPT process. Through the analysis of series of calculated results, it can be found that the intramolecular H-bonds at normal form and tautomer form are enhanced and weakened in the S1 state, respectively, which is favorable to ESIPT process. The potential energy curves revealed that the ESIPT process is much easier to occur gradually from L-HKO to L-HKS and L-HKSe, as the electron-withdrawing ability of atom (from O to S and Se) is weakened. The atomic substitution also has an effect on the photophysical properties. From L-HKO to L-HKS, the emission peak at tautomer form red-shifts 70 nm. The energy gaps of the three compounds follow the decreased order of L-HKO (4.866 eV) > L-HKS (4.753 eV) > L-HKSe (4.371 eV) with the weakened electron-withdrawing ability of atom (from O to S and Se), which leads to the gradual red-shift of the absorption spectra from L-HKO to L-HKS and L-HKSe.

Abstract
In this work, the pharmaceutical cocrystals xanthotoxin-para-aminobenzoic acid (XT-PABA) and xanthotoxin-oxalic acid (XT-OA) were systematically investigated in the gas and water phases by using the quantum chemical approach. The weak intermolecular interactions have been estimated and the O1…H4 (O1…H5) intermolecular hydrogen bond (IHB) with moderate intensity and partial covalent natures was confirmed based on the computed structural parameters, topology analysis, and reduced density gradient (RDG) isosurfaces. The electrophilic and nucleophilic reactivities of different positions associated with intermolecular interactions in XT, PABA, and OA were predicted by plotting the molecular electrostatic potential (MESP) diagrams. The calculated natural bond orbital (NBO) population analysis has quantitatively unveiled the intrinsic reason for the variations in weak intermolecular interactions within XT-PABA and XT-OA cocrystals, from the gas phase to the water phase. Besides, the frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs), Fukui function, and various global reactivity descriptors were computed to measure the chemical reactivity of all the investigated molecular systems. The XT-PABA and XT-OA cocrystals explored in this work could be regarded as valuable exemplar systems to design and synthesize the high-efficiency pharmaceutical cocrystals in the experiment.

Abstract
We explore the mechanism specifically on quantum yields difference of 2-(4,4-Dimethyl-4,5-dihydrooxazol-2-yl)-3-hydroxybenzonitrile (1-CN) and 4-(4,4-Dimethyl-4,5-dihydrooxazol-2-yl)-3-hydroxybenzonitrile (3-CN) by density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory within the Tamm-Dancoff approximation. The structures optimization and the potential energy curves scanning of singlet excited state directly prove that the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) can take place in 1-CN and 3-CN molecules. The calculated spectra show that the fluorescence peaks of two molecules come from the emission of keto* configuration. The non-covalent interaction and the atomic dipole moment corrected Hirshfeld charge are also analyzed. Through the comparison of emission oscillator strength between 1-CN and 3-CN molecules suggests that the radiative transition process is not the main reason for the difference on quantum yields. Internal conversion process is also excluded on account of the large energy gap between S0 and S1. Considering the interaction between singlet and triplet states, both molecules can undergo intersystem crossing. The prominent difference is that, compared with 3-CN, the larger spin-orbit coupling constant and smaller energy level difference promote the intersystem crossing process of 1-CN. This provides direct evidence for the fluorescence quantum yield of 1-CN is lower than that of 3-CN. We envision that the present work can provide help for the synthesis and application of ESIPT compounds with high quantum yields.

Abstract
To reveal the influence of different substituents on the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process and photophysical properties of 4′-N, N-dimethylamino-3-hydroxyflavone (DMA3HF), two novel molecules (DMA3HF-CN and DMA3HF-NH2) were designed by introducing the classical electron-withdrawing group cyano (-CN) and electron-donating group amino (-NH2). The three molecules in the acetonitrile phase were systematically researched by applying the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) methods. The excited-state hydrogen bond enhancement mechanism was confirmed, and the hydrogen bond intensity followed the decreasing order of DMA3HF-NH2 > DMA3HF > DMA3HF-CN, which can be explained at the electronic level by natural bond orbital, fuzzy bond order, and frontier molecular orbital analyses. Moreover, we found from the electronic spectra that the fluorescence intensity of the three molecules in keto form is relatively strong. Moreover, the calculated absorption properties indicated that introducing the electron-withdrawing group -CN could significantly improve the absorption of DMA3HF in the ultraviolet band. In summary, the introduction of an electron-donating group -NH2 can promote the ESIPT reaction of DMA3HF, without changing the photophysical properties, while introducing the electron-withdrawing group -CN can greatly improve the absorption of DMA3HF in the ultraviolet band, but hinders the occurrence of the ESIPT reaction.

Regulation of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer process and photophysical properties for benzoxazole isothiocyanate fluorescent dyes by changing atomic electronegativity. Abstract
Excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) is favored by researchers because of its unique optical properties. However, there are relatively few systematic studies on the effects of changing the electronegativity of atoms on the ESIPT process and photophysical properties. Therefore, we selected a series of benzoxazole isothiocyanate fluorescent dyes (2-HOB, 2-HSB, and 2-HSeB) by theoretical methods, and systematically studied the ESIPT process and photophysical properties by changing the electronegativity of chalcogen atoms. The calculated bond angle, bond length, energy gap, and infrared spectrum analysis show that the order of the strength of intramolecular hydrogen bonding of the three molecules is 2-HOB<2-HSB<2-HSeB. Correspondingly, the magnitude of the energy barrier of the potential energy curve is 2-HOB>2-HSB>2-HSeB. In addition, the calculated electronic spectrum shows that as the atomic electronegativity decreases, the emission spectrum has a redshift. Therefore, this work will offer certain theoretical guidance for the synthesis and application of new dyes based on ESIPT properties.

Abstract
In this work, the effects of atomic electronegativity (O, S, and Se atoms) on the competitive double excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) reactions and photophysical characteristics of uralenol (URA) were systematically explored by using the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) methods. The calculated hydrogen bond parameters, infrared (IR) vibrational spectra, reduced density gradient (RDG) scatter plots, interaction region indicator (IRI) isosurface and topology parameters have confirmed the six-membered intramolecular hydrogen bond (IHB) O4H5…O3 is the stronger one in all the three studied compounds. Subsequently, frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) and natural bond orbital (NBO) population analysis essentially uncover that the electron redistribution has induced the ESIPT process. Besides, the constructed potential energy curves (PECs) have indicated that the ESIPT process prefers to occur along the O4H5…O3 rather than the O1H2…O3 and the proton-transfer energy barrier is gradually decreased with the weakening of atomic electronegativity from URA to URA-S and URA-Se. In a conclusion, the attenuating of atomic electronegativity has enhanced the IHBs of URA and thereby promoting the ESIPT reaction, which is helpful for further developing novel fluorophores based on ESIPT behavior in the future.

Abstract
In this contribution, the solvent effects on the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and photophysical properties of 2-(4-(diphenylamine)phenyl)-3-hydroxy-4H-chromen-4-one (3HF-OH, Dyes Pigm. 2021, 184, 108865) in the dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), acetonitrile (ACN), dichloromethane (DCM) and cyclohexane (CYH) phases have been comprehensively explored by using the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods. The obtained bond lengths, bond angles and infrared (IR) vibration analysis related to the intramolecular hydrogen bond (IHB) reveal that the IHB intensity of 3HF-OH is weakened as the solvent polarity increased. Besides, the ESIPT process changes from the endothermic to the exothermic with the enlargement of solvent polarity, and the reaction barrier increases gradually. It is worth noting that the molecular configuration torsion of 3HF-OH is gradually intensified with the decline of solvent polarity, which aggravates the twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) state and thereby partially attenuates the short-wavelength fluorescence of 3HF-OH in the CYH solvent. In addition to these, the structural torsion has restrained the occurrence of the ESIPT behavior by means of elevating the energy barrier. This theoretical research would provide valuable guidance for regulating and controlling the photophysical behavior of compounds via the strategy of changing solvent polarity.

Abstract
The excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) processes and photophysical features of 3-(benzo[d]oxazol-2-yl)-2-hydroxy-5-methoxy benzaldehyde (BOHMB) and 3-(benzo[d]selenazole-2-yl)-2-hydroxy-5-methoxy benzaldehyde (BSeHMB) molecules were investigated in detail by using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) methods. The strengthened excited state hydrogen bonds (H-bond) of the title compounds are favorable to ESIPT process according to the analyses of structural parameter, infrared vibration frequency, electron density and reduced density gradient. The atomic substitution changes the intramolecular H-bond O1-H2…O3 and O1-H2…N4 and the fluorescence emission peaks of BOHMB-N and BSeHMB-N in normal and tautomer forms. The potential energy curves indicate that the ESIPT energy barriers of BOHMB-O, BTHMB-O and BSeHMB-O increase as the electron-withdrawing abilities of atoms (from O to S and Se) are gradually weakened. However, the ESIPT energy barriers of BOHMB-N and BTHMB-N follow the totally opposite order. For BOHMB and BSeHMB, ESIPT process prefers to occur in the direction from O-H group to the O atom.

Abstract
The fluorescent detection mechanism of 2-(4-nitro-1,3-dioxoisoindolin-2-yl) acetic acid (CORM3-green) on CO-Releasing Molecule-3 (CORM-3) is theoretically studied. Upon reaction with CORM-3, the non-fluorescent CORM3-green is transferred to the keto form of 2-(4-amino-1,3-dioxoisoindolin-2-yl)acetic acid (PTI) to produce strong fluorescence peak located at 423 nm. This peak red-shifts to 489 nm, which is induced by the strengthening of intermolecular hydrogen bond (HB) between PTI and water molecules and attributed to the experimentally observed fluorescence emission at 503 nm. This result is dramatically different from previous reports that the experimental fluorescence corresponds to the proton transferred enol form of PTI. To illustrate this confusion, the calculated fluorescence peak of PTI-Enol is located at 689 nm, which is much larger than that of experimental result. This result excludes the occurrence of excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT). It is concluded that intermolecular HBs hinders the formation of intramolecular HB and the ESIPT of the keto form of PTI. This conclusion confirms that experimental Stokes shift of 113 nm is mainly caused by the intermolecular hydrogen bonding rather than by ESIPT process. This work proposes a reasonable explanation for the detection mechanism of CORM3-green and experimental fluorescence phenomenon.

Abstract
Inexperiment, Song et al. have successfully synthesizedtwo novel molecules BtyC-1 and BtyC-2 and observedasingle and dual fluorescence peaks in these two molecules respectively. (Song et al. Tetrahedron Lett. 2019, 60, 1696-1701) However, they still lack a detailed and reasonable theoretical explanation. Then we wonder why these two similar structures behave so much differently? In this work, we focus on explaining the photochemical and photophysical properties of BtyC-1 and BtyC-2 by studying the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) mechanisms. Based on the optimized geometric configurations, the calculated infrared spectra indicate the intramolecular hydrogen bonding interactions are heightened in their excited states. The frontier molecular orbitals reflect the charge redistribution in photoinduced process, which explains that the driving force of ESIPT process is provided by enhanced hydrogen bonding interactions. In the meantime, the calculations of potential energy curves vividly explain the principle of the experimental dual fluorescence phenomenon. The analysis of Mulliken charges deepens the discussion of molecular structures on the potential energy barriers. Calculated absorption spectra via using density functional theory and emission spectra via using time-dependent density functional theory are consistent with the experimental data, which confirms the correctness of our calculation methods. The reduced density gradient isosurfaces help us distinguish the complex non-covalent bonds. Base on the above analyses, we conclude that there is no stable structure for BtyC-1 in excited state, which make it occur the ESIPT reaction spontaneously. BtyC-2 exists a stable normal structure in excited state. Its dual fluorescence signals are emitted by its normal and isomer structures, respectively.

Abstract
The spectroscopic properties of 3-(benzo[d]-thiazol-2-yl)-2-hydroxy-5-methoxy benzaldehyde molecule were investigated [J. Phys. Chem. A 2019, 123, 10246-10253]. The result shows that the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) was driven toward the N center over the O center. In this research, the density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory method were used to calculate molecule structures. Through our calculations, the ESIPT process toward N atom is proved to be feasible. Moreover, the emission peak we obtained of ESIPT process from the OH proton to aldehyde O atom is located at 564 nm, which is attributed to 500 nm in previous research. From the potential energy curves, the 0.35 kcal/mol energy barrier indicates the ESIPT process could occur when excited to S1 state from the OH proton to aldehyde O atom. In addition, the frontier molecular orbitals analysis and IR spectrum were also calculated. Finally, we revise the direction of BTHMB molecule, the two directions of ESIPT are both feasible when excited to S1 state.

Abstract
Simple and effective detection of thiophenols has attracted great attention. A fluorescent probe 1 with high selectivity and sensitivity is designed and synthesized based on the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) in experiment. However, we conclude that the ESIPT process fails to happen actually based on the calculation results. In the present work, the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods are employed to investigate the real sensing mechanism. The calculated absorption and emission spectra agree well with the experimental results. By comparing the energy of enol and keto configurations and the constructed potential energy surfaces (PESs) in the ground (S0) and excited (S1) states of 3-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-10-butyl-10H-phenothiazin-2-ol (dye 2), the ESIPT process is confirmed impossible because of the relatively high keto form energy and potential energy barrier. Besides, the transition state of dye 2 is optimized to offer the accurate potential energy barrier. The results of calculated frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) and spectra indicate that it is the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) process that results in the fluorescence quenching of probe 1. After adding thiophenols, the thiolysis of 2,4-dinitrophenyl ether bond is triggered and dye 2, which emits strong fluorescence because of the absence of PET process, is obtained. Consequently, our study has demonstrated that probe 1 can act as a fluorescent probe to detect thiophenols through the off-on fluorescence variation based on the PET mechanism but not the ESIPT process.

Abstract
In this work, the one- and two-photon absorption properties of two quadrupolar A-π-D-π-A dyes, featuring carbazole and triphenylamine as donors of varying strengths, are calculated using density functional theory. The characteristics of two-photon excitation are analysed by using the three-state model closest to the real physical process. By taking the intermediate state as a bridge, the charge transfer characteristics in the two-photon excitation process are studied in detail by using various visualisation methods. Comparing the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) characteristics shows that increasing the ability of the push-pull electrons of the central substituents, thus increasing the intramolecular charge transfer, is a more efficient method to enhance the molecular σtp. Our study promotes a deeper understanding of the design of A-π-D-π-A molecules with large cross-sections in two-photon absorption.

Abstract
The rates of charge separation and charge recombination of the cyanine dye/C60 heterojunction solar cell in an external electric field were provided using the Marcus and Marcus-Levich-Jortner formalisms. The vibrational mode as another influencing factor was also introduced into the rate expression for the planar heterojunction solar cell. Detailed theoretical analysis of the excited-state of the Cy3/C60 blend was achieved using density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory. The Gibbs free energy was regulated by an external electric field, while the reorganisation energy presented the opposite conclusion. Frequency analysis was utilised to demonstrate the energy stability of the obtained structures. The rate calculated using the Marcus formalism was greater than that obtained by the Marcus-Levich-Jortner formalism. Consideration of the calculated rates in all vibration modes and at different external electric field strengths indicated that vibrational mode and external electric field played important roles in determining the rates of charge separate and charge recombination, which could provide a more accurate theoretical rate for organic photovoltaic devices.

Abstract
The three organic dye molecules (JY31, JY32 and JY33) were applied to the photoactive layer in solar cells. Photophysical and photochemical characteristic have been investigated with natural bond orbital (NBO), frontier molecular orbital, ionization potentials, electron affinities, absorption properties, reorganization energies, static first hyperpolarizability, emission characteristics, IR spectra, charge density difference; the influence of alkyl chains and 4-butoxyphenyl on properties were revealed; Subsequently, three new molecules JY33-1, JY33-2 and JY33-3 were designed by inserting the electron withdrawing group -CN into the acceptor part of JY33 in order to understand molecular engineering mechanism. The results show that the three original molecules have relatively high molar extinction coefficients, and the molecule of JY33 with a 4-butoxyphenyl group enables a bathochromic shift in absorption spectrum and is beneficial to improve the hole transport, injection capacity and ICT properties as well as better energy levels matching. The current study provides an effective channel for manipulating performance in materials design of solar cells.
