Stabilization of copper nanoparticles onto the double Schiff-base-functionalized ZSM-5 for A3 coupling reaction catalysis aimed under mild conditions

In this research a highly efficient and heterogeneous catalyst of ZSM-5@APTMS@(E)-4-((pyridin-2-ylimino)methyl) benzaldehyde@Cu-NPs was synthesized for upgrading the A³ coupling reaction for the synthesis of propargylamines under mild conditions. Rational tuning of the microenvironment of metallic NPs to improve efficiency and reusability in catalytic performances is of significance for scalable applications. Firstly, ZSM-5 was immobilized with APTMS (3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane) and further modified with (E)-4-((pyridin-2-ylimino)methyl)benzaldehyde. Subsequently, the amine-activated zeolite@(E)-4-((pyridin-2-ylimino)methyl)benzaldehyde was applied to increase the stabilization of Cu metal nanoparticles. The catalyst was treated with hydrazine to reduce Cu(ii) to Cu(0), which led to active metal sites. The results of catalytic performance in comparison with different parts of catalysis indicate high efficiency due to the stabilization of copper nanoparticles onto the newly synthesized support of MOF modified with nitrogen aromatic groups. The addition of N-rich organic ligand through modification alters the electronic structure of the final composite in favor of the progress of the A³-coupling reaction. Moreover, the proposed catalyst showed no reduction in the catalytic performance up to four cycles, and a minor loss of efficiency occurs after the seventh cycle. In addition, the catalyst was effectively recycled up to 7 times without leaching of Cu-NPs.

Regiospecific α-methylene functionalisation of tertiary amines with alkynes via Au-catalysed concerted one-proton/two-electron transfer to O2

Regioselective transformations of tertiary amines, which are ubiquitously present in natural products and drugs, are important for the development of novel medicines. In particular, the oxidative α-C-H functionalisation of tertiary amines with nucleophiles via iminium cations is a promising approach because, theoretically, there is almost no limit to the type of amine and functionalisation. However, most of the reports on oxidative α-C-H functionalisations are limited to α-methyl-selective or non-selective reactions, despite the frequent appearance of α-methylene-substituted amines in pharmaceutical fields. Herein, we develop an unusual oxidative regiospecific α-methylene functionalisation of structurally diverse tertiary amines with alkynes to synthesise various propargylic amines using a catalyst comprising Zn salts and hydroxyapatite-supported Au nanoparticles. Thorough experimental investigations suggest that the unusual α-methylene regiospecificity is probably due to a concerted one-proton/two-electron transfer from amines to O₂ on the Au nanoparticle catalyst, which paves the way to other α-methylene-specific functionalisations.

Alkynylation of radicals: spotlight on the "Third Way" to transfer triple bonds

The alkynylation of radical intermediates has been known since a long time, but had not been broadly applied in synthetic chemistry, in contrast to the alkynylation of either electrophiles or nucleophiles. In the last decade however, it has been intensively investigated leading to new disconnections to introduce versatile triple bonds into organic compounds. Nowadays, such processes are important alternatives to classical nucleophilic and electrophilic alkynylations. Efficient alkyne transfer reagents, in particular arylsulfones and hypervalent iodine reagents were introduced. Direct alkynylation, as well as cascade reactions, were subsequently developed. If relatively harsh conditions were required in the past, a new era began with progress in photoredox and transition metal catalysis. Starting from various radical precursors, alkynylations under very mild reaction conditions were rapidly discovered. This review covers the evolution of radical alkynylation, from its emergence to its current intensive stage of development. It will focus in particular on improvements for the generation of radicals and on the extension of the scope of radical precursors and alkyne sources.
