Ye Olde supramolecular chemistry, its modern rebranding and overarching trends in chemistry

We can describe current contingency of supramolecular chemistry as "post-halogen bonding", with clear reference to the success of the σ-hole model and the halogen bond concepts. This phase is characterized by a strong push towards a new nomenclature for non-covalent interactions, a group-by-group one focusing on the electrophile. As such nomenclature increasingly meets IUPAC endorsement, its proposers report resistances to such ideas, especially in the inorganic and coordination chemistry communities. The whole issue has been generating considerable debate in the last decade. Herein we fully embrace such discussion in the hope of involving a larger share of the relevant communities. Alternative descriptions are here reevaluated, novel views reconnected with older ones, and it is ultimately questioned whether the introduction of such a nomenclature and its subtending ideas would be beneficial. The themes of appreciation of general trends in chemistry, of counterintuitive interactions, of positioning of novel nomenclature with respect to existing ones, and of the extension of group-by-group naming from main block to d-block elements - as key and currently unresolved issues - are discussed. Equivalent, alternative and arguably more comprehensive descriptions are tentatively given, in the hope to overcome controversies together in the pursuit of higher rewards: a comprehensive shared view of supramolecular forces and a common language to express it.

Crystal engineering of high explosives through lone pair-π interactions: Insights for improving thermal safety

In this high-risk/high-reward study, we prepared complexes of a high explosive anion (picrate) with potentially explosive s-tetrazine-based ligands with the sole purpose of advancing the understanding of one of the weakest supramolecular forces: the lone pair-π interaction. This is a proof-of-concept study showing how lone pair-π contacts can be effectively used in crystal engineering, even of high explosives, and how the supramolecular architecture of the resulting crystalline phases influences their experimental thermokinetic properties. Herein we present XRD structures of 4 novel detonating compounds, all showcasing lone pair-π interactions, their thermal characterization (DSC, TGA), including the correlation of experimental thermokinetic parameters with crystal packing, and in silico explosion properties. This last aspect is relevant for improving the safety of high-energy materials.

Pyrene-Containing Polyamines as Fluorescent Receptors for Recognition of PFOA in Aqueous Media

The globally widespread perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a concerning environmental contaminant, with a possible toxic long-term effects on the environment and human health The development of sensible, rapid, and low-cost detection systems is a current change in modern environmental chemistry. In this context, two triamine-based chemosensors, L1 and L2, containing a fluorescent pyrene unit, and their Zn(II) complexes are proposed as fluorescent probes for the detection of PFOA in aqueous media. Binding studies carried out by means of fluorescence and NMR titrations highlight that protonated forms of the receptors can interact with the carboxylate group of PFOA, thanks to salt bridge formation with the ammonium groups of the aliphatic chain. This interaction induces a decrease in the fluorescence emission of pyrene at neutral and slightly acidic pH values. Similarly, emission quenching has also been observed upon coordination of PFOA by the Zn(II) complexes of the receptors. These results evidence that simple polyamine-based molecular receptors can be employed for the optical recognition of harmful pollutant molecules, such as PFOA, in aqueous media.

A π-Stacking Based Fluorescent Probe for Labeling of Flavin Analogues in Live Cells through Unusual FRET Process

The flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) is an indispensable coenzyme in live cells. It acts as a catalyst in many redox responsive metabolic reactions, including oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria. The real-time monitoring of flavin is important to understand the disorder in the metabolic process, redox system, etc. Thus, we have developed a fluorescent probe CPy-1 that noncovalently binds with flavin to exhibit the FRET process. ¹H- NMR and docking study indicated that there is a strong hydrophobic interaction between flavins and CPy-1. Also, a π-π stacking between isoalloxazine ring in flavin and quinoline and coumarin moieties of CPy-1 favors self-assembly. The nontoxic probe CPy-1 could distinguish cancer cells from normal cells based on expressions of endogenous FAD.

Assembly of Polyiodide Networks with Cu(II) Complexes of Pyridinol-Based Tetraaza Macrocycles

Polyiodide networks are currently of great practical interest for the preparation of new electronic materials. The participation of metals in the formation of these networks is believed to improve their mechanical performance and thermal stability. Here we report the results on the construction of polyiodide networks obtained using Cu(II) complexes of a series of pyridinol-based tetraazacyclophanes as countercations. The assembly of these crystalline polyiodides takes place from aqueous solutions on the basis of similar structural elements, the [CuL]²⁺ and [Cu(H_–1L)]⁺ (L = L2, L2-Me, L2-Me₃) complex cations, so that the peculiarities induced by the increase of N-methylation of ligands, the structural variable of ligands, can be highlighted. First, solution equilibria involving ligands and complexes were analyzed (potentiometry, NMR, UV–vis, ITC). Then, the appropriate conditions could be selected to prepare polyiodides based on the above complex cations. Single-crystal XRD analysis showed that the coordination of pyridinol units to two metal ions is a prime feature of these ligands, leading to polymeric coordination chains of general formula {[Cu(H_–1L)]}_nⁿ⁺ (L = L2-Me, L2-Me₃). In the presence of the I^–/I₂ couple, the polymerization tendency stops with the formation of [(CuL)(CuH_–1L)]³⁺ (L = L2-Me, L2-Me₃) dimers which are surrounded by polyiodide networks. Moreover, coordination of the pyridinol group to two metal ions transforms the surface charge of the ring from negative to markedly positive, generating a suitable environment for the assembly of polyiodide anions, while N-methylation shifts the directional control of the assembly from H-bonds to I···I interactions. In fact, an extended concatenation of iodine atoms occurs around the complex dimeric cations, the supramolecular I···I interactions become shorter and shorter, fading into stronger forces dominated by the orbital overlap, which is promising for effective electronic materials.

Polyiodides with high iodine density are generated by Cu(II) complexes of pyridinol-based tetraazacyclophanes. Direct coordination of iodine atoms to Cu(II), anion−π interactions with electron-poor aromatic surfaces, and shift of the directional control of assembly from H-bonds to I···I interactions, governed by N-methylation, are the main elements leading to enhanced iodine chaining and strengthening of I···I contacts.

A Highly Efficient Neutral Anion Receptor in Polar Environments by Synergy of Anion-π Interactions and Hydrogen Bonding

Herein, it is shown how anion recognition in highly polar solvents by neutral metal-free receptors is feasible when multiple hydrogen bonding and anion-π interactions are suitably combined. A neutral aromatic molecular tweezer functionalized with azo groups is shown to merge these two kinds of interactions in a unique system and its efficiency as an anion catcher in water is evaluated using first-principles quantum methods. Theoretical calculations unequivocally prove the high thermodynamic stability in water of a model anion, bromide, captured within the tweezer's cavity. Thus, static calculations indicate anion-tweezer interaction energies within the range of covalent or ionic bonds and stability constants in water of more than 10 orders of magnitude. First-principles molecular dynamics calculations also corroborate the stability through the time of the anion-tweezer complex in water. It shows that the anion is always found within the tweezer's cavity due to the combination of the tweezer-anion interactions plus a hydrogen bond between the anion and a water molecule that is inside the tweezer's cavity.

Words in supramolecular chemistry: the ineffable advances of polyiodide chemistry

Polyiodide chemistry has a rich history deeply intertwined with the development of supramolecular chemistry. Technological and theoretical interest in polyiodides has not diminished in the last decade, quite the contrary; yet the advances this perspective intends to cover are muddled by the involution of supramolecular vocabulary, preventing their unbiased discussion. Herein we discuss the pressing necessity of ordering the current babel of novel - and less so - supramolecular terms. Shared decisions at the community level might be required to shape the field into a harmonious body of knowledge, dominated by concepts rather than words. Secondary, σ-hole and halogen bonding schools of thought are all addressed here, together with their respective impact on the field. Then, on the basis of a shared vocabulary, a discussion of polyiodide chemistry is presented, starting with a revisited view of triiodide. The contemporary fields of supramolecular caging and polyiodide networks are then discussed, with emphasis on how the terms we choose to use deeply affect scientific progress.

Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Supported Pd(II) Complexes: A Supramolecular Approach towards Single-Ion Oxygen Reduction Reaction Catalysts

Lowering the platinum group metal content of oxygen reduction reaction catalysts is among the most prevalent research focuses in the field. This target is herein approached through supported Pd(II) complexes. Starting from a commercial macrocycle, a new ligand is synthesized, its solution behavior and binding properties briefly explored (potentiometry, UV-Vis) and then used to prepare a new catalyst. A supramolecular approach is used in order to obtain homogeneous decoration of carbon nanotubes surfaces, fostering novel possibilities to access single-ion active sites. The novel catalyst is characterized through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy and its promising oxygen reduction reaction performance is evaluated via rotating ring-disk electrode and rotating disk electrode in half-cell studies.

Stabilisation of Exotic Tribromide (Br3-) Anions via Supramolecular Interaction with A Tosylated Macrocyclic Pyridinophane. A Serendipitous Case

Tetraaza-macrocyclic pyridinophane L-Ts, decorated with a p-toluenesulfonyl (tosyl; Ts) group, appear to be a useful tool to provide evidence on how the interplay of various supramolecular forces can help stabilise exotic anionic species such as tribromide (Br₃⁻) anions. Indeed, crystals of (H₂L-Ts)(Br₃)_1.5(NO₃)_0.5 unexpectedly grew from an acidic (HNO₃) aqueous solution of L-Ts in the presence of Br⁻ anions. The crystal structure of this compound was determined by single crystal XRD analysis. Hydrogen bonds, salt-bridges, anion-π, π-π stacking, and van der Waals interactions contribute to stabilising the crystal lattice. The observation of two independent Br₃⁻ anions stuck over the π-electron densities of pyridine and tosyl ligand groups, one of them being sandwiched between two pyridine rings, corroborates the significance of anion-π interactions for N-containing heterocycles. We show herein the possibility of detecting anion-π contacts from fingerprint plots generated by Hirshfeld surface analysis, demonstrating the effective usage of this structural investigation technique to further dissect individual contributions of stabilising supramolecular forces.

Genesis of Complex Polyiodide Networks: Insights on the Blue Box/I−/I2 Ternary System

The Stoddart’s blue box (BB) (cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene))/iodide binary system was recently demonstrated to give rise to porous three-dimensional networks which can hardly be classified as common XOF-type materials (X = M, C, S, i.e., metal, covalent, or supramolecular organic frameworks), leading to the definition of permutable organized frameworks (POFs). The ternary BB/iodide/iodine system was reported to generate pentaiodide-based structures constituted by the most complex interlocked polyiodides so far isolated (up to an infinite supramolecular pseudopolyrotaxane with a poly[3]catenane axle). The missing link, i.e., the XRD structure of the BB/triiodide complex, is herein reported: structural similarities and novel Raman evidence, opening perspectives in the genesis of solid-state BB-based complex polyiodide networks from solution.

Porous Frameworks Based on Supramolecular Ball Joints: Bringing Flexibility to Ordered 3D Lattices

XOFs-type materials (X=M, C, S, that is, metal-organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks and supramolecular organic frameworks, respectively) share a common unifying feature: mutual spatial orientation of constituting components is strictly directional and unchanging by design. Herein, we illustrate an alternate design for porous architectures, as rigid joints constituted by coordinative (MOFs), covalent (COFs), or hydrogen-donor/acceptor (SOFs) bonds, are replaced by supramolecular ball joints, which confer unprecedented flexibility, especially angular, to porous networks. The obtained frameworks remain highly organized but are also permutable: lacking a forced convergence towards an immutable minimum energy structure, these systems remain able to adjust depending on external conditions. Results of POF (permutable organized framework) synthesis is a family of structures rather than a single pre-determined three-dimensional arrangement, as we demonstrate with an illustrative set of 5 XRD structures.

Sensing Zn2+ in Aqueous Solution with a Fluorescent Scorpiand Macrocyclic Ligand Decorated with an Anthracene Bearing Tail

Synthesis of the new scorpiand ligand L composed of a [9]aneN3 macrocyclic ring bearing a CH2CH2NHCH2-anthracene tail is reported. L forms both cation (Zn2+) and anion (phosphate, benzoate) complexes. In addition, the zinc complexes of L bind these anions. The equilibrium constants for ligand protonation and complex formation were determined in 0.1 M NaCl aqueous solution at 298.1 ± 0.1 K by means of potentiometric (pH-metric) titrations. pH Controlled coordination/detachment of the ligand tail to Zn2+ switch on and off the fluorescence emission from the anthracene fluorophore. Accordingly, L is able to sense Zn2+ in the pH range 6-10 down to nM concentrations of the metal ion. L can efficiently sense Zn2+ even in the presence of large excess of coordinating anions, such as cyanide, sulphide, phosphate and benzoate, despite their ability to bind the metal ion.

Modulation of hydrogen bonds and iodine–iodine interactions, both covalent and supramolecular, unlocks novel possibilities for the construction of transition metal-polyiodide hybrid networks.

Solid State and Solution Study on the Formation of Inorganic Anion Complexes with a Series of Tetrazine-Based Ligands

Four molecules (L1-L4) constituted by an s-tetrazine ring appended with two identical aliphatic chains of increasing length bearing terminal morpholine groups were studied as anion receptors in water. The basicity properties of these molecules were also investigated. Speciation of the anion complexes formed in solution and determination of their stability constants were performed by means of potentiometric (pH-metric) titrations, while further information was obtained by NMR and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) measurements. The crystal structures of two neutral ligands (L3, L4) and of their H2L3(ClO4)2∙2H2O, H2L4(ClO4)2∙2H2O, H2L3(PF6)2, and H2L3(PF6)2∙2H2O anion complexes were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The formation of anion-π interactions is the leitmotiv of these complexes, both in solution and in the solid state, although hydrogen bonding and/or formation of salt-bridges can contribute to their stability. Evidence of the ability of these ligands to form anion-π interactions is given by the observation that even the neutral (not-protonated) molecules bind anions in water to form complexes of significant stability, including elusive OH- anions.
