Current Challenges in Microcapsule Designs and Microencapsulation Processes: A Review

Microencapsulation is an advanced methodology for the protection, preservation, and/or delivery of active materials in a wide range of industrial sectors, such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, fragrances, paints, coatings, detergents, food products, and agrochemicals. Polymeric materials have been extensively used as microcapsule shells to provide appropriate barrier properties to achieve controlled release of the encapsulated active ingredient. However, significant limitations are associated with such capsules, including undesired leaching and the nonbiodegradable nature of the typically used polymers. In addition, the energy cost of manufacturing microcapsules is an important factor to be considered when designing microcapsule systems and the corresponding production processes. Recent factors linked to UN sustainability goals are modifying how such microencapsulation systems should be designed in pursuit of "ideal" microcapsules that are efficient, safe, cost-effective and environmentally friendly. This review provides an overview of advances in microencapsulation, with emphasis on sustainable microcapsule designs. The key evaluation techniques to assess the biodegradability of microcapsules, in compliance with recently evolving European Union requirements, are also described. Moreover, the most common methodologies for the fabrication of microcapsules are presented within the framework of their energy demand. Recent promising microcapsule designs are also highlighted for their suitability toward meeting current design requirements and stringent regulations, tackling the ongoing challenges, limitations, and opportunities.

Crystal capillary origami capsule with self-assembled nanostructures

The self-assembling mechanism of elasto-capillaries opens new applications in micro and nanotechnology by providing 3D assembly structures with 2D planar unit cells, so-called capillary origami. To date, the final structure has been designed based on the predetermined shape and size of the unit cell. Here, we show that plate-like salt crystallites grow and cover the emulsion interface, which is driven by Laplace pressure. Eventually, it creates a spherical capsule with self-assembled nanostructures. The capsule and the crystallite are investigated by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. To explain the mechanism, we develop a theoretical model to estimate the capsule size, the shell thickness, and the conditions necessary to form the shell based on a thin-walled pressure vessel. The proposed crystal capillary origami can fabricate a three-dimensional self-assembled salt capsule without any complicated procedures. We believe that it can offer a new physicochemical avenue for the spontaneous and facile fabrication of water-soluble carrier particles.

Unimodal sized silica nanocapsules produced through water-in-oil emulsions prepared by sequential irradiation of kilo- and submega-hertz ultrasounds

This study investigates the regulation of the size of 100 nm hollow-sphere silica particles using surfactant-free water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion. First, water droplets were dispersed in soybean oil via sequential ultrasound irradiation (28 kHz → 200 kHz → 950 kHz). A precursor of hollow silica particles was prepared using hydrolysis and polymerization of methylsilyl trichloride into a stable W/O emulsion. The final structure/morphology of the silica particles was influenced by the volume ratio of water/soybean oil, the cycle number of the sequential ultrasound irradiation, and the amount of organosilane added to the emulsion. The emulsion was stabilized by Ostwald ripening, as the size distribution at 5/10³ (water/oil = v/v) was a bimodal split between a water droplet size of a few μm and some with a size of a few tens of nm. The most appropriate cycle number was 3 in this system. Further cycling to 5 resulted in a broad and bimodal size distribution of the final particles due to rapid coalescence of water droplets. Subsequent hydrolysis of methylsilyl trichloride consumed water with diminishing large droplets, forming fine and unimodal (0.12 ± 0.02 μm) hollow silica particles. Very fine and uniform-sized hollow particles (0.08 ± 0.01 μm) were successfully produced by decreasing the volume ratio to 1/10³ (water/oil) because of a transparent stable emulsion as a homogeneous template of the hollow structures.

A Multi-Scale, Semi-Analytical Model for Transient Heat Transfer in a Nano-Composite Containing Spherical Inclusions

This paper presents a semi-analytical model for transient heat conduction in a composite material reinforced with small spherical inclusions. Essential to the derivation of the model is the assumption that the size of the inclusions is much smaller than the length scale characterizing the macroscopic problem. An interfacial thermal resistance is also present between the two phases. During heating, the inclusions are treated as heat sinks within the matrix, with the coupling provided by the boundary conditions at the surface of the embedded particles. Application of Duhamel’s Theorem at the particle scale provides the local relationship between the temperature profile in a particle and the matrix that surrounds it. A simple spatial discretization at the macro-scale leads to an easily solvable system of coupled Ordinary Differential Equations for the matrix temperature, particle surface temperature and a series of ψ-terms related to the heat exchange between phases. The interfacial thermal resistance between the two phases can lead to the particle temperature lagging behind that of the surrounding matrix. The resulting transient response of the matrix temperature cannot be reproduced by a material with a single effective thermal conductivity. In the case where transient methods are used to determine effective thermal conductivity, this transient response may introduce errors into the measurement.
