Abstract
A series of heterometallic tetranuclear clusters, Ln2Ni2(NO3)4L4(μ3-OCH3)2·2(CH3CN) (Ln = Gd(1), Tb(2), Dy(3), Ho(4), Er(5); HL = methyl 3-methoxysalicylate), were synthesized solvothermally. The intramolecular synergistic effect of two metal centers of Ln(III) and Ni(II) and the exposed multimetallic sites serving as Lewis acid activators greatly increase the efficiency of the CO2 conversion, and the yield for cluster 3 can be achieved at 96% at atmospheric pressure and low temperature. In particular, the self-assembly multimetal center with polydentate ligand shows good generality and enhanced recyclability. The design of such 3d-4f heterometallic clusters provides an effective strategy for the conversion of CO2 under greener conditions. Meanwhile, magnetic investigations indicate that cluster 1 is a good candidate for magnetic refrigerant materials with a relatively large magnetocaloric effect (MCE) (-ΔSm = 28.5 J kg-1 K-1 at 3.0 K and 7.0 T), and cluster 3 shows single-molecular magnet behavior under zero dc field. Heterometallic clusters with special magnetic properties and good catalytic behavior for the conversion of CO2 are rare. Thus, they are potential bifunctional materials applied in practice.

Abstract
Lanthanide supramolecular chemistry is a fast growing and intriguing research field due to the unique photophysical, magnetic, and coordination properties of lanthanide ions (LnIII). Compared with the intensively investigated mononuclear Ln-complexes, polymetallic lanthanide supramolecular assemblies offer more structural superiority and functional advantages. In recent decades, significant progress has been made in polynuclear lanthanide supramolecules, varying from structural evolution to luminescent and magnetic functional materials. This review summarizes the design principles in ligand-induced coordination-driven self-assembly of polynuclear Ln-structures and intends to offer guidance for the construction of more elegant Ln-based architectures and optimization of their functional performances. Design principles concerning the water solubility and chirality of the lanthanide-organic assemblies that are vital in extending their applications are emphasized. The strategies for improving the luminescent properties and the applications in up-conversion, host-guest chemistry, luminescent sensing, and catalysis have been summarized. Magnetic materials based on supramolecular assembled lanthanide architectures are given in an individual section and are classified based on their structural features. Challenges remaining and perspective directions in this field are also briefly discussed.

Abstract
A luminescence sensor based on an europium(III)-based lanthanide-organic framework, [Eu(BCB)(DMF)]·(DMF)1.5(H2O)2 (1), was synthesized via a solvothermal method using 4,4',4''-benzenetricarbonyltribenzoic acid (H3BCB) as a bridging ligand. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction indicates that Eu centers are eight-coordinated with a trigonal dodecahedron and a square antiprismatic configuration, and adjacent Eu atoms are bridged by BCB organic linkers to form a 3D rod-packing structure. Photoluminescence studies show that compound 1 emits bright red luminescence and behaves as a multi-responsive luminescent sensor toward 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and I- and Fe3+ ions in water with high sensitivity, selectivity and low detection limits. Furthermore, the possible luminescence sensing mechanisms were also investigated by PXRD analysis, UV-vis spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The recognition mechanism for 4-NP and I- ions can be attributed to the competition absorption and that for Fe3+ ions is considered to be a multi-quenching mechanism dominated by competition absorption. This study demonstrates that the lanthanide-based MOF might be a promising candidate for the detection of 4-NP and I- and Fe3+ ions in aqueous medium.

Abstract
MOFs with their accessible voids/channels have been explored immensely for sensing due to their exclusive host-guest chemistry. However, unavailability of pores/voids in interpenetrating non-porous MOFs limits their applications in sensing. We herein report for the first time, hitherto, a non-porous MOF with an interpenetrating ladder structure for iodide sensing. A Co-bpe MOF was synthesized by hydrothermal reaction between cobalt nitrate and 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (bpe) in methanol and tested against colorimetric sensing of halides. The supramolecular structure of the Co-bpe MOF was stabilized through strong hydrogen bonding. We propose a double nucleophilic substitution reaction mechanism for iodide detection, which is one of its own kind. While Co-bpe showed a significant color change from dark maroon to dark green in the presence of iodide, the rest of halides did not display any pronounced colorimetric effect. The limit of detection (LOD) of this material was found to be 2.7 × 10-7 M. This article focuses on the equal competency of non-porous MOF materials with the porous MOFs in sensing applications.

Abstract
Coumarin-based lanthanide complexes of general formula [Ln(coum)3(phen)(H2O)x]·yH2O (Ln-phen, x = 0,1, 0 ≤ y ≤ 1.5; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline; coum = 3-acetyl-4-hydroxylato-coumarin; Ln = Eu, Tb, Dy, Tm) and [Ln(coum)3(batho)]·0.7EtOH (Ln-batho, batho = 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline; Ln = Eu, Tb, Dy, Tm) were synthesized. The magnetic relaxation and photoluminescence behavior of these complexes was compared with that of the related compounds [Ln(coum)3(EtOH)(H2O)]·EtOH (Ln-coum), so as to investigate the effects of incorporating a second chromophore, either the phen or batho ligand, to the original coordination scaffold, provided with three coumarin (coum) ligands. Slow relaxation of the magnetization under H = 0 with moderate activation energies was observed for the Dy-phen (U/kB = 99.1 K) and Dy-batho (U/kB = 67.1 K) compounds, whereas Tb analogues presented field-induced single molecule magnet (SMM) behavior, with U/kB = 11.7 K (16.6 K@3 kOe) for Tb-phen (Tb-batho), respectively. Luminescent emission in the visible range was observed for all the Ln-coumarin based compounds upon ligand sensitization, with high quantum yields of 45 (40%) for Eu-phen (Eu-batho) compounds and 65-76-58% for Tb-coum, phen, batho analogues. Sensitization is mainly provided by the coumarin ligand having the energy difference ΔE between its triplet state T1 and the lanthanide emitting level closest to the optimum, while the second ligand can play either a synergistic or competing sensitizing role. The Tb-phen/batho compounds presented simultaneously SMM and luminescent behavior, with excellent values of the bifunctional figure of merit (ηSMM-QY ∼ 1000% K). The reported compounds represent a new class of bifunctional materials with potential interesting application in various fields.

Abstract
The utilization of a Schiff base ligand 2-((2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-benzylideneamino)methyl)phenol (H2L) afforded five nonanuclear lanthanide(iii) clusters. Dy9 displays slow relaxation of magnetization and Tb9 serves as luminescent sensor for Fe3+, CrO42− and Cr2O72−.
