Insight into mineralizer modified and tailored scorodite crystal characteristics and leachability for arsenic-rich smelter wastewater stabilization

First principles study of structural and electron properties in scorodite: the bulk and surface

Scorodite (FeAsO4·2H2O) is an ideal material for the fixation of arsenic that has attracted considerable research interest in recent decades. However, the position of the H atom in the scorodite crystal structure, water molecular configuration, surface morphology, and chemical state of the surface atoms have not been reported. In this work, density functional theory (DFT) is used to optimize the scorodite crystal structure, and the atomic bonding is analyzed. At the same time, a surface model is constructed to calculate the configuration and electronic structure of the surface atoms for different coordination groups. The results show that the tetrahedral [AsO4] and octahedral [FeO4(2H2O)] groups in the scorodite crystal structure have good stability(geometry configuration), and the covalent bond strength between the As atom and the bridged oxygen atom (Ob) is greater than that between the Ob atom and the Fe atom. The water molecules in the crystal structure do not seriously deform and ionize. The configuration of the water molecules remains stable through electrostatic interactions (Ow-Fe) and hydrogen bonding (H-Ob). The Fe atoms on the surface of scorodite can coordinate with OH and H2O, while the As atoms can only form a stable coordination with OH. When an Fe atom on the surface coordinates with two H2O atoms, the Fe atom will shrink to the inside of the bulk. With the increase in the hydroxylation number of the Fe atom, the bonding strength between the Fe atom and the Ob atom decreases. Different surface configurations do not affect the stability(geometry configuration) of the [AsO4] structure. In addition, the surface water molecular layer has a very weak effect on the surface coordination configuration. By contrast, in the surface configuration of the (W + OH) structure, the change in the surface atomic layer spacing is the smallest.

Minimization and stabilization of smelting arsenic-containing hazardous wastewater and solid waste using strategy for stepwise phase-controlled and thermal-doped copper slags

Minimization and stabilization of arsenic-containing smelting wastewater and residue is of crucial issue to resolve the arsenic contamination. Calcium arsenate is a typical precipitate produced from disposal of smelting acid wastewater. However, it suffers from poor stability and large quantity in the aqueous environment. Copper slags, as for rich-iron species materials, are disposed of in landfills or open-air tailing ponds, which are another waste material that have not been effectively utilized for reuse application. In this study, strategy for sequence of phase-controlled and thermal-doped copper slag technique was used as the efficient means of minimization and stabilization of arsenic-bearing resides. Detailed results were showed that stepwise phase precipitation significantly reduced the formation of hazardous solid waste; the total solid waste was reduced 47.0 wt% because the gypsum was separated from arsenic calcium residues through two-step methods. Subsequently, solid waste stabilization was achieved by using thermal-doped slag, and the high yield of magnetite (75.6 wt%) and fayalite (22.7 wt%) was produced from copper slags. It was proved that these iron-rich species displayed the remarkable performance to stabilize arsenic due to the formation of Fe-As-Ca-O complex; compared with the raw solid waste, the arsenic leachability was decreased from 280.75 to 1.05 mg/L via copper slag stabilization process. The immobilized arsenic content was 25.0 wt%. Overall, the proposed strategy for stepwise phase-controlled and thermal-doped copper slags was a potentially effective strategy for reducing emissions and pollution of arsenic-containing wastewater and residue.

The effect of precursor speciation on the growth of scorodite in an atmospheric scorodite synthesis

In this study, we propose a growth pathway of scorodite in an atmospheric scorodite synthesis. Scorodite is a non-direct product, which is derived from the transformation of its precursor. Different precursor speciation leads to different crystallinity and morphology of synthesized scorodite. At 10 and 20 g l-1 initial arsenic concentration, the precursor of scorodite is identified as ferrihydrite. At 10 g l-1 initial arsenic concentration, low arsenic concentration is unfavourable to the complex between arsenate and ferrihydrite, inhibiting the transformation of ferrihydrite into scorodite. The synthesized scorodite is 1-3 µm in size. At 20 g l-1 initial arsenic concentration, higher arsenic concentration favours the complex between arsenate and ferrihydrite. The transformation process is accessible. Large scorodite in the particle size of 5-20 µm with excellent crystallinity is obtained. However, the increasing initial arsenic concentration is not always a positive force for the growth of scorodite. When initial arsenic concentration increases to 30 g l-1, Fe(O,OH)6 octahedron preferentially connects to As(O,OH)4 tetrahedron to form Fe H 2 As O 4 2 + or FeHAs O 4 + ion. Fe-As complex ions accumulate in solution. Once the supersaturation exceeds the critical value, the Fe-As complex ions deprotonate and form poorly crystalline ferric arsenate. Even poorly crystalline ferric arsenate can also transform to crystalline scorodite, its transformation process is much slower than ferrihydrite. Therefore, incomplete developed scorodite with poor crystallinity is obtained.

Disposal of high-arsenic waste acid by the stepwise formation of gypsum and scorodite

The typical disposal of high-arsenic waste acid is at the expense of discharging a large quantity of hazardous solid waste, resulting in secondary pollution of arsenic. We propose a modified lime/ferric salt method for high-arsenic waste acid disposal by the stepwise formation of gypsum and scorodite at atmospheric pressure. The sulfuric acid in the high-arsenic waste acid is first removed by calcium carbonate generating gypsum, and then the arsenic in the solution is precipitated in form of scorodite. Gypsum with an arsenic leaching concentration below 5 mg L⁻¹ is obtained at a final pH of 0.5 in the calcium carbonate neutralization stage. In the second stage, the optimal conditions including a starting pH of 2.0, an Fe/As ratio of 1.5, a reaction temperature in the range of 80–90 °C and a reaction time equal to or longer than 8 hours provide an arsenic removal efficiency of 95.34% by the formation of well-crystallized and environmentally stable scorodite with grain sizes in a range of 1–5 μm. The proposed process offers a promising and facile solution for the low-cost disposal of high-arsenic waste acid in the nonferrous metallurgical industry, which enables an efficient arsenic removal with the good accessibility of chemical reagents and facilities.

Arsenic is removed from high arsenic waste acid via the stepwise formation of gypsum and scorodite.
