Supercritical CO2 drying of alginate/zinc hydrogels: a green and facile route to prepare ZnO foam structures and ZnO nanoparticles

Supercritical Fluid-Dried Copolymerized Aramid Nanofiber Sheets with Exceptional Thermal and Dimensional Stability

Aramid fibers exhibit outstanding properties such as heat resistance, chemical resistance, dimensional stability, durability and elongation. However, their poor dispersibility poses a significant challenge when preparing composites. Consequently, converting aramid fibers into nanofibers is crucial to enhance their dispersibility. In this study, aramid nanofibers with excellent dispersibility were prepared by applying a supercritical fluid drying process. Technora based copolymer para-aramid nanofibers (CANF) were prepared by reacting in a DMSO/KOH basic solution within a short processing time (i.e., less than 3 h), and dried by a supercritical fluid process. We obtained uniformly dispersed CANF without the change in chemical composition. In addition, uniform translucent membrane sheets were prepared by vacuum filtration methods. Their tensile strength was obtained to be 23 MPa with high dimensional stability even at 100 °C without shrinkage, which can provide the possibility of CANF sheets as a separator for lithium-ion batteries.

Influence of Cross-Linking Conditions on Drying Kinetics of Alginate Hydrogel

Hydrogels are three-dimensional cross-linked polymeric networks capable of a large amount of fluid retention in their structure. Hydrogel outputs manufactured using additive manufacturing technologies are exposed to water loss, which may change their original shape and dimensions. Therefore, the possibility of retaining water is important in such a structure. In this manuscript, kinetic analysis of water evaporation from sodium alginate-based hydrogels exposed to different environmental conditions such as different temperatures (7 and 23 °C) and ambient humidity (45, 50 and 95%) has been carried out. The influence of the cross-linking method (different calcium chloride concentration-0.05, 0.1 and 0.5 M) of sodium alginate and cross-linking time on the water loss was also considered. Studies have shown that a decrease in the temperature and increase in the storage humidity can have a positive effect on the water retention in the structure. The storage conditions that led to the least weight and volume loss were T 7 °C and 95% humidity. These experiments may help in selecting the appropriate hydrogel preparation method for future applications, as well as their storage conditions for minimum water loss and, consequently, the least change in dimensions and shape.

Rectifying ZnO-Na/ZnO-Al aerogels p-n homojunctions

Semiconductor ZnO aerogels were synthesized by a sol-gel process with different concentrations (2.5-7.5 wt.%) of Al (n-type) or Na (p-type) and dried under supercritical CO2. The materials were calcined at 500 °C to remove the organic content and to crystallize the ZnO. The microstructure of the ZnO-based aerogels comprises a porous structure with hexagonal and platelet-shaped interconnected particles. The bandgap of the aerogels doped with Al decreased significantly compared to pure, undoped ZnO aerogels, while their specific surface area increased. For the electrical characterization of the ZnO-Na/ZnO-Al junctions, the doped ZnO aerogels were deposited on commercial glass substrates coated with indium tin oxide (ITO) by drop casting method. The I-V curves of the p-n homojuntions revealed a characteristic diode rectifying behavior.

Comparison of green bio-based cerium/alginate vs. copper/alginate beads: a study of vibrational and thermal properties using experimental and theoretical methods

Herein, bio-based alginates (Alg) containing metallic beads (Ce and Cu) were synthesized via an alginate cross-linking method, and their properties were studied using experimental techniques combined with theoretical simulations. Materials were characterized through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images, to determine the cross-linking structural features, thermal stability, and surface morphology of alginates. Besides, density functional theory (DFT) methods were employed to calculate global reactivity parameters such as HOMO-LUMO gap energies (ΔE_H-L), electronegativity (χ), hardness (η), and electrophilic and nucleophilic indicators, using both gas and aqueous media for the study of the complexation process. Among other features, characterization of the thermal properties showed that Alg@Ce and Alg@Cu alginate beads behave differently as a function of the temperature. This behavior was also predicted by the conformation energy differences between Alg@Ce and Alg@Cu, which were found out theoretically and explained with the combined study of the vibrational modes between the carboxylate group with either Ce or Cu. Overall, the reactivity of the Alg@Ce alginate bead was higher than that of the Alg@Cu counterpart, results could be used as a cornerstone to employed the materials here studied in a wide range of applications.

Synthesis and Characterization of Antibacterial Carbopol/ZnO Hybrid Nanoparticles Gel

This study recommends Carbopol/zinc oxide (ZnO) hybrid nanoparticles gel as an efficient antibacterial agent against different bacterial species. To this end, ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized using chemical precipitation derived from a zinc acetate solution with ammonium hydroxide as its precipitating agent under the effect of ultrasonic radiation. The synthesized ZnO nanoparticles were stabilized simultaneously in a freshly prepared Carbopol gel at a pH of 7. The chemical composition, phase identification, particle size and shape, surface charge, pore size distribution, and the BET surface area of the ZnO nanoparticles, as well as the Carbopol/ZnO hybrid Nanoparticles gel, were by XRD, SEM, TEM, AFM, DLS, Zeta potential and BET instruments. The results revealed that the synthesized ZnO nanoparticles were well-dispersed in the Carbopol gel network, and have a wurtzite-crystalline phase of spherical shape. Moreover, the Carbopol/ZnO hybrid nanoparticles gel exhibited a particle size distribution between ~9 and ~93 nm, and a surface area of 54.26 m2/g. The synthesized Carbopol/ZnO hybrid nanoparticles gel underwent an antibacterial sensitivity test against gram-negative K. pneumonia (ATCC 13883), Bacillus subtilis (ATCC 6633), and gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538) bacterial strains, and were compared with ampicillin as a reference antibiotic agent. The obtained results demonstrated that the synthesized Carbopol/ZnO hybrid nanoparticles gel exhibited a compatible bioactivity against the different strains of bacteria.
