Effect of ionic size compensation by Ag+ incorporation in homogeneous Fe-substituted ZnO: studies on structural, mechanical, optical, and magnetic properties

X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy Study of Iron Site Manganese Substituted Yttrium Orthoferrite

In this work, manganese (Mn)-doped YFeO3, i.e., YFMxO powders with 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.1, was synthesized by a hydrothermal method to study the influences of doping on its structural, morphological, optical, magnetic, and local electrical properties. The experimental results show that all the samples exhibit an orthorhombic structure with space group Pnma. Refined structure parameters are presented. Morphology images show the shape evolution from layered to multilayered with increasing Mn content. Infrared spectra reveal the characteristic vibrations of the obtained YFMxO samples. From the magnetic study, an increased magnetic moment in the range of 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.075 is observed. The Fe and Y K-edge local structure studies indicate that the valency of Fe and Y is mainly found in the trivalent state, which also indicates that the substitution of Mn ions not only affects the nearest neighbor atomic shell of Fe but also affects the nearest neighbor’s local structure of Y atoms. Our results show that the addition of Mn exhibits an evident influence on the local structural and magnetic properties.

Photo generated charge transport studies of defects-induced shuttlecock-shaped ZnO/Ag hybrid nanostructures

We report the stimulating effects of interfacial charge transfer process between spherical Ag nanoparticles and shuttlecock-shaped ZnO nanostructures observed by UV-visible spectroscopy and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. In specific, ZnO nanorods and shuttlecock-shaped ZnO/Ag nanostructures were developed using a simple chemical colloidal method and characterized for structural variations using XRD. The observed red shift in plasmonic peak and the increase in Urbach energy signify interfacial interactions and increased randomness in the hybrid ZnO/Ag nanostructures. Simultaneously, the enhanced intensity of deep-level emission in the ZnO/Ag hybrid suggests the increased recombination rate of electron-hole pairs. The red and blue emissions evolving with temperature subsequently suggests the presence of oxygen vacancies or zinc interstitials in the system. The decrease in intensities and emerging features in O K-edge and Zn L-edge indicates the charge transfer from Ag to ZnO at the interface of ZnO/Ag hybrids. Moreover, the differences in absorption edges with alternating light on/off conditions were analyzed for the exploitation of this ZnO-based system in various applications.

AACVD Synthesis and Characterization of Iron and Copper Oxides Modified ZnO Structured Films

Non-modified (ZnO) and modified (Fe2O3@ZnO and CuO@ZnO) structured films are deposited via aerosol assisted chemical vapor deposition. The surface modification of ZnO with iron or copper oxides is achieved in a second aerosol assisted chemical vapor deposition step and the characterization of morphology, structure, and surface of these new structured films is discussed. X-ray photoelectron spectrometry and X-ray diffraction corroborate the formation of ZnO, Fe2O3, and CuO and the electron microscopy images show the morphological and crystalline characteristics of these structured films. Static water contact angle measurements for these structured films indicate hydrophobic behavior with the modified structures showing higher contact angles compared to the non-modified films. Overall, results show that the modification of ZnO with iron or copper oxides enhances the hydrophobic behavior of the surface, increasing the contact angle of the water drops at the non-modified ZnO structures from 122 to 135 and 145 for Fe2O3@ZnO and CuO@ZnO, respectively. This is attributed to the different surface properties of the films including the morphology and chemical composition.
