Synthesis of sulfamic acid supported on Cr-MIL-101 as a heterogeneous acid catalyst and efficient adsorbent for methyl orange dye

Synthesis and characterization of magnesium ferrite-activated carbon composites derived from orange peels for enhanced supercapacitor performance

Supercapacitors have emerged as highly efficient energy storage devices, relying on electrochemical processes. The performance of these devices can be influenced by several factors, with key considerations including the selection of electrode materials and the type of electrolyte utilized. Transition metal oxide electrodes are commonly used in supercapacitors, as they greatly influence the electrochemical performance of these devices. Nonetheless, ferrites' low energy density poses a limitation. Hence, it is crucial to create electrode materials featuring unique and distinct structures, while also exploring the ideal electrolyte types, to enhance the electrochemical performance of supercapacitors incorporating magnesium ferrites (MF). In this study, we effectively prepared magnesium ferrites (MgFe2O4) supported on activated carbon (AC) derived from orange peels (OP) using a simple hydrothermal method. The resulting blends underwent comprehensive characterization employing various methods, including FTIR, XRD, TEM, SEM, EDX, and mapping analysis. Moreover, the electrochemical performance of MgFe2O4@AC composites was evaluated using GCD and CV techniques. Remarkably, the MF45-AC electrode material showed exceptional electrochemical behavior, demonstrating a specific capacitance of 870 F·g-1 within current density of 1.0 A g-1 and potential windows spanning from 0 to 0.5 V. Additionally, the prepared electrodes displayed exceptional cycling stability, with AC, MF, and MF45-AC retaining 89.6%, 94.2%, and 95.1% of their initial specific capacitance, respectively, even after 5000 cycles. These findings underscore the potential of MF-AC composites as superior electrode materials for supercapacitors. The development of such composites, combined with tailored electrolyte concentrations, holds significant promise for advancing the electrochemical performance and energy density of supercapacitor devices.

High-performance catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol using M-BDC (M = Ag, Co, Cr, Mn, and Zr) metal-organic frameworks

The catalytic activity of pure metal nanoparticles is always limited by aggregation during the reaction. Therefore, promising candidates such as metal-organic frameworks possess benefits due to their 3D porous structures, high stability, and high specific surface area. In this study, effective and reusable catalysts based on M-BDC metal-organic frameworks were synthesized utilizing five different coordinating metal ions (M = Ag, Co, Cr, Mn, and Zr) as metal nodes and 1-4-benzene dicarboxylic acid (BDC) as an organic linker and used in catalytic reduction of 4-Nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-Aminophenol (4-AP) for the first time. The as-prepared catalysts were characterized using SEM, EDX, XRD, and FTIR techniques. Based on catalytic performance, Co-BDC showed the best catalytic efficiency compared to the other M-BDC MOF catalysts with a conversion yield of about 99.25 in 2 min. All of the catalysts could catalyze the complete reduction of 4-NP to 4-AP at different reaction times (2-10); however, Mn-BDC could not finish the catalytic reduction reaction even after 20 min. The two more efficient catalysts including Co-BDC and Cr-BDC demonstrated high stability and reusability (more than 85% catalytic efficiency) even after 5 cycles.

Sulfamic acid grafted to cross-linked chitosan by dendritic units: a bio-based, highly efficient and heterogeneous organocatalyst for green synthesis of 2,3-dihydroquinazoline derivatives

In this work, novel cross-linked chitosan by the G1 dendrimer from condensation of melamine and toluene-2,4-diisocyante terminated by sulfamic acid groups (CS-TDI-Me-TDI-NHSO₃H), as a bio-based and heterogeneous acidic organocatalyst, was designed and prepared. Also, the structure of the prepared organocatalyst was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis/derivative thermogravimetry (TGA/DTA). Subsequently, the catalytic performance of the biobased and dendritic CS-TDI-Me-TDI-NHSO₃H, as a multifunctional solid acid, was evaluated for the preparation of 2,3-dihydroquinazoline derivatives through a three-component reaction by following green chemistry principles. Some of the advantages of this new protocol include high to excellent yields and short reaction times as well as easy preparation and remarkable catalyst stability of the introduced acidic organocatalyst. The CS-TDI-Me-TDI-SO₃H catalyst can be used for up to five cycles for the preparation of quinazoline derivatives with a slight decrease in its catalytic activity.

Fe/Co-MOF Nanocatalysts: Greener Chemistry Approach for the Removal of Toxic Metals and Catalytic Applications

This study describes the preparation of new bimetallic (Fe/Co)-organic framework (Bi-MOF) nanocatalysts with different percentages of iron/cobalt for their use and reuse in adsorption, antibacterial, antioxidant, and catalytic applications following the principles of green chemistry. The prepared catalysts were characterized using several techniques, including X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. These techniques proved the formation of MOFs, and the average crystallite sizes were 25.3-53.1, 27.6-67.2, 3.0-18.9, 3.0-12.9, and 3.0-23.6 nm for the Fe-MOF, Co-MOF, 10%Fe:90%Co-MOF, 50%Fe:50%Co-MOF, and 90%Fe:10%Co-MOF samples, respectively. The nanoscale (Fe/Co) Bi-MOF catalysts as efficient heterogeneous solid catalysts showed high catalytic activity with excellent yields and short reaction times in the catalytic reactions of quinoxaline and dibenzoxanthene compounds, in addition to their antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Furthermore, the nanoscale (Fe/Co) Bi-MOF catalysts efficiently removed toxic metal pollutants (Pb²⁺, Hg²⁺, Cd²⁺, and Cu²⁺) from aqueous solutions with high adsorption capacity.

Gold-selenide quantum dots supported onto cesium ferrite nanocomposites for the efficient degradation of rhodamine B

In this work, different weight percentage of gold-selenide quantum dots (AuSe QDs) (1.0, 2.5, 5.0 and 7.0 wt.%) were successfully synthesized and decorated on cesium ferrite nanocomposite (Cs2Fe2O4 NC). The as-prepared pure AuSe QDs, pure Cs2Fe2O4 NC, and x wt.% AuSe QDs/Cs2Fe2O4 NC photocatalysts were investigated using different characterization techniques such as nitrogen adsorption desorption isotherms (BET), X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. The results show that AuSe QDs were uniformly distributed on Cs2Fe2O4NCs surface as spherical dots with an average size of 1.0-8.0 nm. While the Cs2Fe2O4 NCs possess an average size between 10 to 35 nm. The photocatalytic performance of x wt. % AuSe QDs/Cs2Fe2O4NCs were measured through the photodegradation of rhodamine B (RhB) dye as a model water pollutant, under a150 W-Mercury lamp with a filter (JB400) as a simulated source of visible light. The results revealed that the % degradation of RhB increased from 50.0 %, 59.1 %, 76.4 %, and to 99.15 % within 150 min for the pure Cs2Fe2O4, 1.0, 2.5 and 5.0 wt.% AuSe QDs/Cs2Fe2O4 NC photocatalysts, respectively. The 5.0 wt.% AuSe/Cs2Fe2O4 NC sample showed highest photocatalytic activity. The effect of recycling also studied. High photocatalytic performance and superior stability confirmed that the prepared nanocomposites act as good photocatalysts.

Role of NiO Nanoparticles in Enhancing Structure Properties of TiO2 and Its Applications in Photodegradation and Hydrogen Evolution

Pure and modified mesoporous TiO2 nanoparticles with different loadings of NiO (3-20.0 wt %) were prepared through the surfactant-assisted sol-gel approach with the use of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as a template. The optical and structural properties of different samples were examined using N2 adsorption-desorption analysis, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction results confirmed the insertion of Ni2+ into the lattice of TiO2, and the crystallite size reduced remarkably after the addition of NiO. The diffuse reflectance spectroscopy spectra displayed obvious red shift in the absorption edges, and new absorption bands appeared in the visible region when NiO was added, which indicates the formation of surface defects and oxygen vacancies. The optical band gap of TiO2 reduced sharply when the contents of NiO were increased. The increase in the surface defects as well as oxygen vacancies were examined using PL spectroscopy. The photocatalytic performance of the as-synthesized samples was investigated over photodegradation of brilliant green (BG) and phenol and hydrogen generation under visible light. 10% NiO/TiO2 exhibited the highest photocatalytic efficiency. The photocatalytic activity was improved due to the creation of a p-n junction at the interface of NiO/TiO2, which efficiently promotes the separation of photogenerated electron/hole pairs and consequently enhances its photodegradation activity. According to the photocatalytic activity results, NiO contents were considered one of the most important factors affecting the photodegradation of BG and phenol and H2 evolution. Also, we discussed the mechanism of photodegradation, mineralization (total organic carbon), and photocatalytic reaction kinetics of BG and phenol.

Anhydrous proton conductivity of electrospun phosphoric acid-doped PVP-PVDF nanofibers and composite membranes containing MOF fillers

A high-temperature proton exchange membrane was fabricated based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) blend polymer nanofibers. Using electrospinning method, abundant small ionic clusters can be formed and agglomerated on membrane surface, which would facilitate the proton conductivity. To further enhance the conductivity, phosphoric acid (PA) retention as well as mechanical strength, sulfamic acid (SA)-doped metal-organic framework MIL-101 was incorporated into PVP-PVDF blend nanofiber membranes. As a result, the anhydrous proton conductivity of the composite SA/MIL101@PVP-PVDF membrane reached 0.237 S cm^-1 at 160 °C at a moderate acid doping level (ADL) of 12.7. The construction of long-range conducting network by electrospinning method combined with hot-pressing and the synergistic effect between PVP-PVDF, SA/MIL-101 and PA all contribute to the proton conducting behaviors of this composite membrane.

Palladium supported on mixed-metal-organic framework (Co-Mn-MOF-74) for efficient catalytic oxidation of CO

Successful monometallic and bimetallic metal-organic frameworks with different Co/Mn ratios have been synthesized under solvothermal conditions. The as-synthesized MOFs followed by deposition of Pd nanoparticles with 0.5 to 7 wt%. The XRD, BET, SEM, TEM, EDAX and FT-IR characterization results reveal that bimetallic MOFs and Pd nanoparticles were finely dispersed on the prepared MOFs surfaces. XRD results confirm the formation of the desire MOFs and show the high degree of dispersion of Pd nanoparticles. TEM images show that Pd nanoparticles are nano-sized with almost uniform shape. EDAX shows that Pd nanoparticles successfully loaded on Co0.5-Mn0.5-MOF-74 catalyst. CO oxidation as a model reaction was then used to assess the catalytic performance of the prepared catalysts. The catalytic activity results show enhancement in the catalytic activities of monometallic MOFs after introducing another metal in the same framework and show an excellent improvement in CO conversion after loading with Pd nanoparticles. Furthermore, the samples that contain Pd nanoparticles exhibits higher catalytic activities which raised with increasing the content of Pd nanoparticles.

The role of PMA in enhancing the surface acidity and catalytic activity of a bimetallic Cr-Mg-MOF and its applications for synthesis of coumarin and dihydropyrimidinone derivatives

In the present study, a bimetallic Cr-Mg-MOF was successfully synthesized by the solvothermal method and then modified by loading different amounts of phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) using a simple wet impregnation technique. The morphological and structural properties of the prepared samples were investigated using X-ray diffraction, TEM, SEM, BET and FTIR spectroscopy. Importantly, Mg doping not only caused the Cr-Mg-MOF to have a higher surface area than MIL-101 (Cr) or MOF-74 (Mg), but the strategy of doping metal ions can be an effective way to improve the adsorption performance of MOFs. The surface acidity and the acid strength of the samples were determined using potentiometric titration and the FTIR of pyridine adsorption. The incorporation of PMA crystals gradually enhances both the surface acidity and the acid strength of the PMA/Cr-Mg-MOF catalysts up to 75 wt%. The catalytic performances of the prepared catalysts were tested in two acid-catalyzed organic transformations, namely, 7-hydroxy-4-methyl coumarin and 3,4-dihydropyrimidinone. In the two reactions, the catalytic activity attains the maximum value at 75 wt% PMA loading. The PMA catalysts supported on Cr-Mg-MOF are potentially promising heterogeneous catalysts for acid-catalyzed organic transformations in environmentally friendly processes, to replace the use of conventional homogeneous PMA catalysts.

Fabrication of UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe) binary MOF/carboxylated-GO composite for adsorptive removal of methylene blue dye from aqueous solutions

This study provides a novel composite as an efficient adsorbent of cationic methylene blue dye. UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe) binary metal organic framework (MOF) was fabricated using a solvothermal technique. Additionally, the developed binary MOF was modified with carboxylated graphene oxide (GOCOOH) using a post-synthetic technique. The as-fabricated UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe)-GOCOOH composite was analyzed by FTIR, XRD, SEM, BET, TGA, XPS and zeta potential analysis. The adsorption performance of UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe)-GOCOOH composite was examined for its aptitude to adsorb cationic MB dye using a batch technique. The obtained data revealed that, the developed UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe)-GOCOOH composite exhibited higher adsorption capacity compared to UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe) binary MOF. Adsorption isotherms and kinetic studies revealed that MB dye adsorption onto UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe)-GOCOOH composite fitted a Langmuir isotherm model (q m = 448.71 mg g-1) and both pseudo 1st order and pseudo 2nd order kinetic models. An intra-particle diffusion model showed that the adsorption process occurs through three steps. Besides, thermodynamic data reflected that the adsorption of MB onto UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe)-GOCOOH composite is an endothermic and spontaneous process and the adsorption involves both physisorption and chemisorption interactions. The as-fabricated UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe)-GOCOOH composite exhibited good reusability and can be considered as a promising reusable adsorbent for the treatment of dye-containing industrial effluents with high efficiency.

Sulfamic acid incorporated HKUST-1: a highly active catalyst and efficient adsorbent

Herein we introduce an effective approach for incorporating sulfamic acid (SA) into HKUST-1. The synthesized materials have been characterized using XRD, XPS, BET, FT-IR, SEM, EDX and TEM. The X-ray diffraction pattern of SA@HKUST-1 is analogous to that of parent HKUST-1 in line shape and d-spacing, proving that chemical modification could be obtained without damage to structural solidity. The XPS spectra confirmed successful sulfonation, due to the single S 2p peak being attributable to SO₃H groups at 168 eV. Catalytic efficiency was studied for 7-hydroxy-4-methyl coumarin and 3,4-dihydropyrimidinone synthesis and it was found to be highly dependent on the amount of SA loaded over HKUST-1. Moreover, the adsorptive removal activity of some common organic and inorganic pollutants from water has been studied. To fully understand the adsorption process, the effects of initial dye concentration, pH of solution, adsorbent dosage, contact time and temperature on the adsorption process were successfully studied. Under the optimum conditions 10 wt% SA@HKUST-1 was able to reach the maximum adsorption capacity for Pb²⁺ (298 mg g⁻¹) and Malachite green (290 mg g⁻¹). Hopefully, this will facilitate research on improving the prospective use of MOFs for future applications.

Facile fabrication of bimetallic Fe–Mg MOF for the synthesis of xanthenes and removal of heavy metal ions

This work reported the preparation of Mg-MOF, Fe-MOF and Fe–Mg MOF by a solvothermal technique and their characterization with FT-IR, XRD, SEM, EDS, TEM and S_BET analyses. The nanoparticle diameter ranged from 3.1 to 10.9 nm. The acidity of the MOFs was measured by nonaqueous potentiometric titration of n-butylamine. It was observed that the formation of a bimetallic MOF sharply increases the surface acidity and the catalytic activity. The catalytic results of the Fe–Mg MOF catalyzing the synthesis of 14-aryl-14-H-dibenzo[a,j]xanthenes in comparison with those of parent MOFs showed a higher yield of the desired product in a lower time and among various Fe : Mg, the (0.6 : 1) Fe–Mg MOF showed the highest catalytic activity and acidity. Even after the 4^th run, the Fe–Mg MOF catalyst still maintained nearly the initial catalytic activity. The adsorption performance of Mg-MOF, Fe-MOF and Fe–Mg MOF was evaluated by batch experiments. The effect of contact time, the solution pH, the adsorbent dose and the initial concentration of the heavy metal ions was discussed. It was found that the capacity of the bimetallic Fe–Mg MOF for Pb(ii), Cu(ii) and Cd(ii) adsorption was higher than that of the Mg-MOF and Fe-MOF, the kinetic data followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the isothermal data obeyed the Langmuir isotherm model. The mechanism of the removal of the heavy metal ions was discussed.
