Adsorption of aniline from aqueous solution using graphene oxide-modified attapulgite composites

Alginate magnetic graphene oxide biocomposite synthesis for removal of aromatic amines from aqueous samples

In the present work, alginate magnetic graphene oxide biocomposite was synthesized for the removal and extraction of aromatic amines (aniline, p-chloroaniline (PCA), and p-nitroaniline (PNA)) from water samples. The biocomposite was investigated for its physiochemical characteristics such as surface morphology, functional groups, phase determination, and elemental composition. The results revealed that the functional groups of graphene oxide and alginate retained in biocomposite with magnetic properties. The biocomposite was applied to water samples for the removal and extraction of aniline, p-chloroaniline, and p-nitroaniline through adsorption process. The adsorption process was studied under various experimental conditions like time, pH, concentration, dose, and temperature, and all the parameters were optimized. The maximum adsorption capacities at room temperature have an optimum pH = 4 for aniline = 18.39 mg g^-1, for PCA = 17.13 mg g^-1, and for PNA = 15.24 mg g^-1. Kinetic and isotherm models showed that the experimental data is best fitted to pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model. Thermodynamic study suggested that the adsorption process is exothermic and spontaneous. Ethanol was found to be the best eluent for the extraction of all the three analytes suggested by the extraction study. The maximum percent recoveries from spiked water samples were calculated for aniline = 98.82%, PCA = 96.65%, and PNA = 93.55% which showed that alginate magnetic graphene oxide biocomposite could be a useful and ecofriendly adsorbent for the removal of organic pollutants in water treatment processes.

Film-based fluorescent sensor for visual monitoring and efficient removal of aniline in solutions and gas phase

Aniline has attracted much concern for its long degradation half-life and huge toxicity to the environment and human beings. Therefore, the development of a multi-functional device for visual detection and efficient removal of aniline was highly anticipated. In our work, the small-size Eu@UiO-66(COOH) was obtained by post-synthesis modification (PSM), and then the film-based fluorescent sensor was prepared by crosslinking reaction. The films not only showed incredible mechanical stability and potential for large-scale preparation, but also have excellent fluorescence response to aniline in solutions and gas phase. As the concentration of aniline increased, the fluorescence of films gradually increased at 350 nm, while the fluorescence gradually quenching at 620 nm, and the detection limits (LOD) of aniline in water and air were 0.27 ppb and 0.086 ppb, respectively. In addition, the adsorption performance of the film for aniline has also been confirmed and the maximum adsorption capacity was 32.6 mg/g, which is a strong guarantee for the realization of ultra-trace detection and toxicity reduction of aniline. In summary, the multi-functional film sensor has been designed for ultra-trace detection and efficient removal of aniline in solutions and gas phase, and have significant value for pollutant treatment, ecological restoration and early prevention.

Adsorption Properties and Mechanism of Attapulgite to Graphene Oxide in Aqueous Solution

In order to remove toxic graphene oxide (GO) from aqueous solution, attapulgite (ATP) was used as adsorbent to recycle it by adsorption. In this paper, the effects of different pH, adsorbent mass, GO concentration, time and temperature on the adsorption of GO by attapulgite were studied, and the adsorption performance and mechanism were further explored by XRD, AFM, XPS, FTIR, TEM and SEM tests. The results show that when T = 303 K, pH = 3, and the GO concentration is 100 mg/L in 50 mL of aqueous solution, the removal rate of GO by 40 mg of attapulgite reaches 92.83%, and the partition coefficient Kd reaches 16.31. The adsorption kinetics results showed that the adsorption equilibrium was reached at 2160 min, and the adsorption process could be described by the pseudo-second-order adsorption equation, indicating that the adsorption process was accompanied by chemical adsorption and physical adsorption. The isotherm and thermodynamic parameters show that the adsorption of GO by attapulgite is more consistent with the Langmuir isotherm model, and the reaction is a spontaneous endothermic process. The analysis shows that attapulgite is a good material for removing GO, which can provide a reference for the removal of GO in an aqueous environment.

3D graphene-based adsorbents: Synthesis, proportional analysis and potential applications in oil elimination

The suitability and efficacy of three-dimensional (3D) graphene, including its derivatives, have garnered widespread attention towards the development of novel, sustainable materials with ecological amenability. This is especially relevant towards its utilization as adsorbents of wastewater contaminants, such as heavy metals, dyes, and oil, which could be majorly attributed to its noteworthy physicochemical features, particularly elevated chemical and mechanical robustness, advanced permeability, as well as large specific surface area. In this review, we emphasize on the adsorptive elimination of oil particles from contaminated water. Specifically, we assess and collate recent literature on the conceptualization and designing stages of 3D graphene-based adsorbents (3DGBAs) towards oil adsorption, including their applications in either batch or continuous modes. In addition, we analytically evaluate the adsorption mechanism, including sorption sites, physical properties, surface chemistry of 3DGBA and interactions between the adsorbent and adsorbate involving the adsorptive removal of oil, as well as numerous effects of adsorption conditions on the adsorption performance, i.e. pH, temperature, initial concentration of oil contaminants and adsorbent dosage. Furthermore, we focus on the equilibrium isotherms and kinetic studies, in order to comprehend the oil elimination procedures. Lastly, we designate encouraging avenues and recommendations for a perpetual research thrust, and outline the associated future prospects and perspectives.

Preparation of PP-g-(AA-MAH) Fibers Using Suspension Grafting and Melt-Blown Spinning and its Adsorption for Aniline

This paper uses polypropylene (PP) as the matrix and acrylic acid (AA) and maleic anhydride (MAH) as functional monomers to prepare PP-g-(AA-MAH) fibers by suspension grafting and melt-blown spinning technology that are easy to industrially scale-up. The fibers can be used to adsorb aniline. Results showed that the grafting ratio reached the maximum of 12.47%. The corresponding optimal conditions were grafting time of 3 h, AA: MAH = 0.75, total monomer content of 55%, benzoyl peroxide 1.4%, xylene concentration of 6 mL/g PP, and deionized water content of 8 mL/g PP. Owing to its good fluidity and thermal stability, the product of suspension grafting can be used for melt-blown spinning. Infrared spectroscopic and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic analyses indicated that AA and MAH were successfully grafted onto PP fibers. After grafting, the hydrophilicity of PP-g-(AA-MAH) fiber increased. Therefore, it had higher absorptivity for aniline and the adsorption capacity could reach 42.2 mg/g at 45 min and pH = 7. Moreover, the PP-g-(AA-MAH) fibers showed good regeneration performance.

Bioengineered Graphene Oxide Microcomposites Containing Metabolically Versatile Paracoccus sp. MKU1 for Enhanced Catechol Degradation

Paracoccus sp. MKU1, a metabolically versatile bacterium that encompasses diverse metabolic pathways in its genome for the degradation of aromatic compounds, was investigated for catechol bioremediation here for the first time to our knowledge. Paracoccus sp. MKU1 degraded catechol at an optimal pH of 7.5 and a temperature of 37 °C, wherein 100 mg/L catechol was completely mineralized in 96 h but required 192 h for complete mineralization of 500 mg/L catechol. While investigating the molecular mechanisms of its degradation potential, it was unveiled that Paracoccus sp. MKU1 employed both the ortho and meta pathways by inducing the expression of catechol 1,2-dioxygenase (C12O) and catechol 2,3-dioxygenase (C23O), respectively. C23O expression at transcriptional levels was significantly more abundant than C12O, which indicated that catechol degradation was primarily mediated by extradiol cleavage by MKU1. Furthermore, poly(MAA-co-BMA)-GO (PGO) microcomposites containing Paracoccus sp. MKU1 were synthesized, which degraded catechol (100 mg/L) completely within 48 h with excellent recycling performance for three cycles. Thus, PGO@Paracoccus microcomposites proved to be efficient in catechol degradation at not only faster rates but also with excellent recycling performances than free cells. These findings accomplish that Paracoccus sp. MKU1 could serve as a potential tool for bioremediation of catechol-polluted industrial wastewater and soil.

Green Carbon Material for Organic Contaminants Adsorption

Eco-friendly and economical adsorbents are desirable for removing organic pollutants from the environment. Herein, a kind of green carbon material, electrolytic carbon (EC) prepared by the electrochemical conversion of greenhouse gas (CO₂) in molten carbonate, is verified as an effective adsorbent for aniline and other small aromatic organic molecules. The EC consists of nanoparticles and nanoflakes, featuring the specific surface area of ∼641 m²/g with an enriched micropore structure. It exhibits a large adsorption capacity (Q_max > 114.1 mg/g) for aniline, especially in water with a lower contamination level. The adsorption conforms to the pseudo-second-order equation kinetically and the Freundlich model thermodynamically in the temperature range of 303-323 K. Moreover, it is found that the adsorption performance of the material can be further improved through reducing surface oxygen functional groups by a simple thermotreatment. Its adsorption capacity for aniline is enhanced by 1.7 times, demonstrating that the π-π dispersive interaction plays a primary role for the efficient adsorption. This adsorption mechanism is further confirmed by the excellent adsorption performance of the carbon materials for other analogue aromatic compounds (phenol, nitrobenzene). The super performance of the CO₂-derived carbon adsorbents will be helpful for capturing CO₂ as well as for removing organic pollutants.

High-efficiency adsorption and regeneration of methylene blue and aniline onto activated carbon from waste edible fungus residue and its possible mechanism

Edible fungus residue as an efficient and low-cost precursor was used to produce Edible Fungus residue Activated Carbon (EFAC) using the zinc chloride activation method at a 1 : 2 impregnation ratio and 600 °C activation for 3 hours. The activation process does not need gases like nitrogen and is suitable for mass production. Fungal biodegradation facilitates efficient chemical activation, which might have generated abundant pores on the activated carbon sample. Using BET, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and FTIR characterization, reveals that EFAC exhibits a large specific surface area (1070 m² g⁻¹), and large pore volume (0.68 cm³ g⁻¹), with its surface displaying a honeycomb-like structure. The EFAC adsorbs methylene blue (MB) and aniline in water, with maximum adsorptions of 662.25 and 27.10 mg g⁻¹, respectively. Various adsorption conditions, such as the EFAC dosage, pH, contact time and initial concentration were investigated. The adsorption is characterized by the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models, with thermodynamics studies indicating that the adsorption is endothermic and spontaneous. Furthermore, the EFAC exhibited good regeneration performance by a 90% ethanol solution. The EFAC is a low-cost and environmentally friendly adsorbent for removing organic contaminants in wastewater.

Synthesis and characterization of TiO2/graphene oxide nanocomposites for photoreduction of heavy metal ions in reverse osmosis concentrate

In this study, graphene oxide (GO), titanium dioxide (TiO2) and TiO2/GO nanocomposites were synthesized as the catalysts for photoreduction of endocrine disrupting heavy metal ions in reverse osmosis concentrates (ROC). The morphology, structure and chemical composition of these catalysts were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, Barrett-Joyner-Halenda, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The photocatalytic experiments showed that TiO2/GO nanocomposites exhibit a higher photoreduction performance than pure TiO2 and GO. Under the optimal conditions, the removal rates of Cd2+ and Pb2+ can reach 66.32 and 88.96%, respectively, confirming the effectiveness of photoreduction to reduce the endocrine disrupting heavy metal ions in ROC resulted from the combined adsorption-reduction with TiO2/GO nanocomposites.
