Utilization of modified Dioscorea opposita Thunb. as a novel biosorbent for the adsorption of indigo carmine in aqueous solutions

Treating waste with waste: Adsorption of anionic dyes in wastewater with surfactant-modified phosphogypsum

Phosphogypsum (PG) is a solid waste generated during the wet process of phosphoric acid production. The environmental-friendly disposal and recycling of PG is vital in the field of environmental solid waste treatment. In this study, PG is used for adsorbent of dyes in wastewater to achieve the goal of recycling waste with waste. Surfactant-modified phosphogypsum (ODBAC@PG) was prepared using octadecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (ODBAC) as modifier. ODBAC@PG exhibits high adsorption capability for anionic dyes (methyl blue (MeB) and indocyanine carmine (IC)). The pseudo-second-order kinetic model fits the kinetic experimental data for the adsorption of two organic anionic dyes. Langmuir adsorption isotherm fits the adsorption characteristics of MeB and IC on ODBAC@PG, exhibiting a monolayer adsorption pattern. Thermodynamic parameters indicate the spontaneous and exothermic properties of MeB and IC on ODBAC@PG. MeB and IC have antagonistic effects on each other in binary adsorption system. High adsorption capacity after six cycles of experiments demonstrates the high reusability of ODBAC@PG. The nature for the adsorption includes electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bond and hydrophobic interaction. Using ODBAC@PG for dyes wastewater treatment can accomplish the goal of treating waste with waste and turning waste into treasure.

In situ anchoring Zn-doped ZIF-67 on carboxymethylated bacterial cellulose for effective indigo carmine capture

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) have been considered as advanced adsorption materials to alleviate dye pollution. However, the application range is limited due to the powder characteristics of ZIFs. The conjugation of ZIFs with nanocellulose is an attractive strategy to construct profitable materials. Herein, we report an in situ anchoring method for preparing novel ZIFs@carboxymethylated bacterial cellulose (ZCMBC) composite films. The resulting ZCMBC composite films show a high ZIFs loading rate and satisfactory selective indigo carmine removal efficiency. With simple methanol washing, ZCMBC composite films retain a high removal efficiency after regeneration. In addition, ZCMBC composite films also show excellent mechanical properties. The proposed adsorption mechanism and the universality of this in situ anchoring method are also discussed, indicating their application potential in the dye-contaminated wastewater treatment field.

Efficient removal of three dyes using porous covalent triazine frameworks: adsorption mechanism and role of pore distribution

Dyes are widely used in production and life. In this study, porous covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) were synthesized and the adsorption behavior for three dyes was investigated by batch adsorption experiments. CTFs were characterized by various spectroscopic techniques for structure, porosity and surface properties. Several possible adsorption mechanisms were proposed including pore-filling, electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding interaction with the triazine structure of CTFs. The mechanisms were further verified by the pore size distribution and pH dependence. Additionally, CTF_DCBP displayed stronger adsorption affinity and faster adsorption kinetics for dyes, because of the wide pore size distribution. This study provides a new insight into the mesoporous CTFs, which exhibit great potential as an effective adsorbent for dye removal.

Yellow pigment formation, pigment composition, and quality of fresh-cut yam (Dioscorea opposita) slices

Fresh-cut yam (Dioscorea opposita) slices brown easily and can turn yellow under certain storage conditions. The formation conditions of yellow pigment, pigment composition, and quality of yellow fresh-cut yam slices were investigated in this study. The results showed that storage temperature, gas ratio of packaging, and slice thickness affected the formation of yellow pigmentation. The highest content of yellow pigment was found in 0.1 cm-thick yam slices stored at 25 °C for 18 h and packaged in 20% O₂ and 80% N₂. Yellow pigments were composed primarily of bisdemethoxycurcumin (73.7%) and two other unknown compounds that were not attributed to microorganisms. Yellow fresh-cut yam exhibited good quality, and the alcohol and ester extracts of yellow yams had higher oxygen radical adsorption capacity and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging ability compared to white fresh-cut yam.

Removal characteristics of two anionic dyes by a polyethylenimine/poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) gel

The highly efficient gel obtained via the copolymerization of polyethylenimine (PEI) and poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) was successfully applied for the removal of two anionic dyes (amaranth and sunset yellow) from their aqueous solutions. Moreover, the results of the adsorption experiments for sunset yellow and amaranth on the PEI/PDMAEMA gel demonstrate that the adsorption equilibrium both could be achieved within 1 h, and the maximum adsorption capacities were 757 mg g⁻¹ and 744 mg g⁻¹ under unoptimized conditions, respectively. Moreover, the PEI/PDMAEMA composite gel was found to be pH-sensitive and the addition of salts together with ionic strength were also explored for understanding the adsorption performance. In addition, it can be found from the studies of adsorption mechanism that it is mainly electrostatic adsorption; moreover, the separation process conforms to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model and the pseudo second-order kinetic model, which is a spontaneous endothermic process. When the PEI/PDMAEMA gel was used in continuous flow column, it could handle large volumes of dye solution with very low concentrations due to its strong enrichment capacity. Finally, the desorption experiments show that the PEI/PDMAEMA gel is easier to regenerate and has a longer lifetime. Therefore, the high adsorption capacity and easy operation of adsorption for amaranth and sunset yellow on the PEI/PDMAEMA gel make it a potential application prospect for the practical removal of other kinds of similar pollutants.
