Current status of advancement in remediation technologies for the toxic metal mercury in the environment: A critical review

Currently, pollution due to heavy metals, in particular dissolved mercury, is a major concern for society and the environment. This work aims to evaluate the current scenario regarding the removal/elimination of mercury. Mercury removal through adsorption is mainly done through artificial resins and metallic-organic frameworks. In the case of the zinc organic framework, it was able to adsorb Hg2+, reaching an adsorption capacity of 802 mg g-1. As for the Hg(0) the coconut husk was found to have the lowest equilibrium time, 30 min, and the highest adsorption capacity of 956.2 mg g-1. Experimental reports and molecular simulation indicate that the adsorption of mercury and other chemical forms occurs due to electrostatic interactions, ion exchange, precipitation, complexation, chelation, and covalent bonds, according to the material nature. The reported thermodynamic results show that, in most cases, the mercury adsorption has an endothermic nature with enthalpy levels below 40 kJ mol-1. Thermal and chemical regeneration methods lead to a similar number of 5 cycles for different materials. The presence of other ions, in particular cadmium, lead, and copper, generates an antagonistic effect for mercury adsorption. Regarding the other current technologies, it was found that mercury removal is feasible through precipitation, phytoremediation, and marine microalgae; all these methods require constant chemicals or a slow rate of removal according to the conditions. Advanced oxidative processes have noteworthy removal of Hg(0); however, Fenton processes lead to mineralization, which leads to Fe2+ and Fe3+ in solution; sonochemical processes are impossible to scale up at the current technology level; and electrochemical processes consume more energy and require constant changes of the anode and cathode. Overall, it is possible to conclude that the adsorption process remains a more friendly, economical, and greener process in comparison with other processes.

Tailoring the covalent organic frameworks based polymer materials for solar-driven atmospheric water harvesting

Atmospheric water harvesting through reticular materials is an innovation that has the potential to change the world. Here, this study offers a technique for creating a solar-powered hygroscopic polymer material for atmospheric water harvesting with the reticular materials. The results show that the porous hygroscopic polymer materials can achieve high performance with high vapor capture (up to ac. 28.8-49.7 mg/g at 28-38 %RH and 25  ℃), rapid photothermal conversion efficiency (up to 32.2 ℃ within 15 min under 1000 W/m-2 light at 25 ℃), a low desorption temperature (lower than 40 ℃), and an effective water release rate. Besides, the material also has excellent water-retention properties, which can effectively store desorbed liquid water in polymer networks for use by vegetation during water demand periods. The strategy opens new avenues for atmospheric water-harvesting materials, which will hopefully solve the global crisis of freshwater shortages.

Super capacity of ligand-engineered biochar for sorption of malachite green dye: key role of functional moieties and mesoporous structure

This study synthesized a new thiomalic acid-modified rice husk biochar (TMA-BC) as a versatile and eco-friendly sorbent. After undergoing chemical treatments, the mercerized rice husk biochar (NaOH-BC) and TMA-BC samples showed higher BET surface area values of 277.1 m2/g and 305.8 m2/g, respectively, compared to the pristine biochar (BC) sample, which had a surface area of 234.2 m2/g. In batch adsorption experiments, it was found that the highest removal efficiency for malachite green (MG) was achieved with TMA-BC, reaching 96.4%, while NaOH-BC and BC exhibited removal efficiencies of 38.6% and 27.9%, respectively, at pH 8. The engineered TMA-BC exhibited a super adsorption capacity of 104.17 mg/g for MG dye at pH 8.0 and 25 °C with a dosage of 2 g/L. The SEM, TEM, XPS, and FTIR spectroscopy analyses were performed to examine mesoporous features and successful TMA-BC carboxylic and thiol functional groups grafting on biochar. Electrostatic forces, such as π - π interactions, hydrogen bonding, and pore intrusion, were identified as key factors in the sorption of MG dye. As compared to single-solution adsorption experiments, the binary solution experiments performed at optimized dosages of undesired ions, such as humic acid, sodium dodecyl sulfate surfactant, NaCl, and NaSCN, reflected an increase in MG dye removal of 2.8%, 8.7%, 5.4%, and 12.7%, respectively, which was attributed to unique mesoporous features and grafted functional groups of TMA-BC. Furthermore, the TMA-BC showed promising reusability up to three cycles. Our study indicates that mediocre biochar modified with TMA can provide an eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative to commercially accessible adsorbents.

Exploring the origins and cleanup of mercury contamination: a comprehensive review

Mercury is a global pollutant that poses significant risks to human health and the environment. Natural sources of mercury include volcanic eruptions, while anthropogenic sources include industrial processes, artisanal and small-scale gold mining, and fossil fuel combustion. Contamination can arise through various pathways, such as atmospheric deposition, water and soil contamination, bioaccumulation, and biomagnification in food chains. Various remediation strategies, including phytoremediation, bioremediation, chemical oxidation/reduction, and adsorption, have been developed to address mercury pollution, including physical, chemical, and biological approaches. The effectiveness of remediation techniques depends on the nature and extent of contamination and site-specific conditions. This review discusses the challenges associated with mercury pollution and remediation, including the need for effective monitoring and management strategies. Overall, this review offers a comprehensive understanding of mercury contamination and the range of remediation techniques available to mitigate its adverse impacts.

A review on adsorption of heavy metals from wastewater using carbon nanotube and graphene-based nanomaterials

The rampant rise in world population, industrialization, and urbanization expedite the contamination of water sources. The presence of the non-biodegradable character of heavy metals in waterways badly affects the ecological balance. In this modern era, the unavailability of getting clear water as well as the downturn in water quality is a major concern. Therefore, the effective removal of heavy metals has become much more important than before. In recent years, the attention to better wastewater remediation was directed towards adsorption techniques with novel adsorbents such as carbon nanomaterials. This review paper primarily emphasizes the fundamental concepts, structures, and unique surface properties of novel adsorbents, the harmful effects of various heavy metals, and the adsorption mechanism. This review will give an insight into the current status of research in the realm of sustainable wastewater treatment, applications of carbon nanomaterials, different types of functionalized carbon nanotubes, graphene, graphene oxide, and their adsorption capacity. The importance of MD simulations and density functional theory (DFT) in the elimination of heavy metals from aqueous media is also discussed. In addition to that, the effect of factors on heavy metal adsorption such as electric field and pressure is addressed.

Synergistic effect in simultaneous removal of cationic and anionic heavy metals by nitrogen heteroatom doped hydrochar from aqueous solutions

Industrial wastewater typically contains both cationic and anionic heavy metals; therefore, their simultaneous removal must be considered to ensure environmental sustainability. Herein, nitrogen heteroatom (N) doped hydrochar derived from corncob was prepared via facile NH₄Cl-aided hydrothermal carbonization and used for the simultaneous adsorption of divalent copper (Cu(II)) and hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in aqueous solutions. During hydrothermal carbonization, NH₄Cl played a vital role as the porogen and N dopant, which contributed to the efficient adsorption affinity toward coexisting Cu(II) and Cr(VI). The theoretical maximum adsorption capacities of the N-doped hydrochar were determined to be 1.223 mmol/g for Cu(II) and 1.995 mmol/g for Cr(VI), which were much better than those of the pristine hydrochar. Furthermore, in the binary-component system, the synergistic effect between Cu(II) and Cr(VI) significantly promoted the adsorption affinity of N-doped hydrochar, resulting in adsorption capacities for Cu(II) and Cr(VI) 9.48 and 1.92 times higher than those of the single-component system, respectively. A series of adsorption experiments and spectroscopic analyses demonstrated that multiple mechanisms, including electrostatic shielding, cation bridging, and redox reactions, mutually contributed to the synergistic effect in the adsorption of coexisting Cu(II) and Cr(VI). Overall, the N-doped hydrochar proved to be effective in simultaneously removing both cationic and anionic heavy metal pollutants.

Application of BCXZM Composite for Arsenic Removal: EPS Production, Biotransformation and Immobilization of Bacillus XZM on Corn Cobs Biochar

This study determined the effect of Bacillus XZM extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) production on the arsenic adsorption capacity of the Biochar-Bacillus XZM (BCXZM) composite. The Bacillus XZM was immobilized on corn cobs multifunction biochar to generate the BCXZM composite. The arsenic adsorption capacity of BCXZM composite was optimized at different pHs and As(V) concentrations using a central composite design (CCD)2² and maximum adsorption capacity (42.3 mg/g) was attained at pH 6.9 and 48.9 mg/L As(V) dose. The BCXZM composite showed a higher arsenic adsorption than biochar alone, which was further confirmed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs, EXD graph and elemental overlay as well. The bacterial EPS production was sensitive to the pH, which caused a major shift in the -NH, -OH, -CH, -C=O, -C-N, -SH, -COO and aromatic/-NO₂ peaks of FTIR spectra. Regarding the techno economic analysis, it was revealed that USD 6.24 are required to prepare the BCXZM composite to treat 1000 gallons of drinking water (with 50 µg/L of arsenic). Our findings provide insights (such as adsorbent dose, optimum operating temperature and reaction time, and pollution load) for the potential application of the BCXZM composite as bedding material in fixed-bed bioreactors for the bioremediation of arsenic-contaminated water in future.

Potentially Harmful Elements Associated with Dust of Mosques: Pollution Status, Sources, and Human Health Risks

Potentially harmful elements (PHEs) associated with dust generated from anthropogenic sources can be transported into mosques and deposited on the filters of the air-conditioners (AC); thereby, children and adults are exposed to such PHEs while visiting mosques. Data dealing with the assessment of PHEs pollution and its human health risk in mosques dust in Saudi Arabia are scarce. Therefore, this work aims to examine the levels and pollution status of PHEs in AC filter dust (ACFD) of mosques and their associated human health risk in three Saudi cities: Jubail, Jeddah, and Dammam metropolitan. A similar concentration pattern of PHEs is observed in three cities' mosques with noticeably higher concentrations than both global crustal and local background values for Zn, Cu, Pb, As, and Cd only. Except for Fe, Al, and Mn, the highest PHEs concentrations were found in Jeddah (1407 mg/kg), followed by Dammam (1239 mg/kg) and Jubail (1103 mg/kg). High PHEs' concentrations were also recorded in mosques located near workshops and suburban areas compared to urban areas. Based on the spatial pattern, enrichment factor, geo-accumulation index, pollution load index, and ecological risk values, Jubail, Jeddah, and Dammam have shown moderate pollution levels of Cd, As, Pb, and Zn. On the other hand, Cu. Zn, Cu, Cr, Pb, Ni, As, and Cd had degrees of enrichment levels that varied from significantly enriched to extremely highly enriched in the ACFD of the three cities. Heavy pollution is found in Jubail, which posed a higher potential ecological risk than in Jeddah and Dammam. Cd presents the highest ecological risk factors (ER) in the three cities. Carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks for children and adults follow the order: Jeddah > Dammam > Jubail, and the ingestion pathway was the main route for exposure. Carcinogenic and con-carcinogenic risks in the mosques of the various studied cities were generally within the acceptable range.

The recent development of inverse vulcanized polysulfide as an alternative adsorbent for heavy metal removal in wastewater

Inverse vulcanized polysulfides have been used as low-cost and effective adsorbents to remediate heavy metals in wastewater. Inverse vulcanization introduces sustainable polysulfide synthesis by solving the rapid desulfurization problem of unstable polysulfides, and provides superior performance compared to conventional commercial adsorbents. The review discussed the brief applications of the inverse vulcanized polysulfides to remove heavy metal wastewater and emphasized the modified synthesis processes for enhanced uptake ratios. The characteristics of polysulfide adsorbents, which play a vital role during the removal process are highlighted with a proper discussion of the interaction between metal ions and polysulfides. The review paper concludes with remarks on the future outlook of these low-cost adsorbents with high selectivity to heavy metals. These polysulfide adsorbents can be prepared using a wide variety of crosslinker monomers including organic hydrocarbons, cooking oils, and agro-based waste materials. They have shown good surface area and excellent metal-binding capabilities compared to the commercially available adsorbents. Proper postmodification processes have enabled the benefits of repetitive uses of the polysulfide adsorbents. The improved surface area obtained by appropriate choice of crosslinkers, modified synthesis techniques, and regeneration through post-modification has made inverse vulcanized polysulfides capable of removing.

Carbon-based adsorbents as proficient tools for the removal of heavy metals from aqueous solution: A state of art-review emphasizing recent progress and prospects

Carbon-centric adsorbents (CCA) are diverse forms, from simple biochar (BC) to graphene derivatives, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and activated carbon (AC), which have been vastly explored for their removal of a plethora of pollutants, including heavy metals (HM). The prominent features of CCA are their operational attributes like extensive surface area, the occurrence of flexible surface functional groups, etc. This work offers a comprehensive examination of contemporary research on CCA for their superior metal removal aptitude and performances in simulated solutions and wastewater flows; via portraying the recent research advances as an outlook on the appliances of CACs for heavy metal adsorption for removal via distinct forms like AC, BC, Graphene oxide (GO), and CNTs. The bibliometric analysis tool was employed to highlight the number of documents, country-wise contribution, and co-occurrence mapping based on the Scopus database. The coverage of research works in this review is limited to the last 5 years (2017-2021) to highlight recent progress and prospects in using CCAs such as AC, BC, GO, and CNTs to remove HM from aqueous media, which makes the review unique. Besides an overview of the common mechanisms of CACs, the future scope of CAC, especially towards HM mitigation, is also discussed in this review. This review endorses that further efforts should be commenced to enhance the repertory of CCAs that effectively eliminate multiple targeted metals in both simulated and real wastewater.

Remediation of heavy metal polluted waters using activated carbon from lignocellulosic biomass: An update of recent trends

The use of a cheap and effective adsorption approach based on biomass-activated carbon (AC) to remediate heavy metal contamination is clearly desirable for developing countries that are economically disadvantaged yet have abundant biomass. Therefore, this review provides an update of recent works utilizing biomass waste-AC to adsorb commonly-encountered adsorbates like Cr, Pb, Cu, Cd, Hg, and As. Various biomass wastes were employed in synthesizing AC via two-steps processing; oxygen-free carbonization followed by activation. In recent works related to the activation step, the microwave technique is growing in popularity compared to the more conventional physical/chemical activation method because the microwave technique can ensure a more uniform energy distribution in the solid adsorbent, resulting in enhanced surface area. Nonetheless, chemical activation is still generally preferred for its ease of operation, lower cost, and shorter preparation time. Several mechanisms related to heavy metal adsorption on biomass wastes-AC were also discussed in detail, such as (i) - physical adsorption/deposition of metals, (ii) - ion-exchange between protonated oxygen-containing functional groups (-OH, -COOH) and divalent metal cations (M²⁺), (iii) - electrostatic interaction between oppositely-charged ions, (iv) - surface complexation between functional groups (-OH, O^2-, -CO-NH-, and -COOH) and heavy metal ions/complexes, and (v) - precipitation/co-precipitation technique. Additionally, key parameters affecting the adsorption performance were scrutinized. In general, this review offers a comprehensive insight into the production of AC from lignocellulosic biomass and its application in treating heavy metals-polluted water, showing that biomass-originated AC could bring great benefits to the environment, economy, and sustainability.

Effective removal of Hg(II) and MeHg from aqueous environment by ball milling aided thiol-modification of biochars: Effect of different pyrolysis temperatures

In order to synthesize biochar with the enhanced adsorption of inorganic mercury (Hg(II)) and organic mercury (Methylmercury, MeHg), biochars pyrolyzed at different pyrolysis temperatures (300, 500, and 700 °C) were ball milled with 3-trimethoxysilylpropanethiol (3-MPTS). Characterization results showed that 3-MPTS acted as an activator which further enlarged pores in biochars and ball-milling increased surface area of biochars. During ball milling, oxygen-containing functional groups increased which facilitated the loading of -SH group. The maximum adsorption capacities for Hg(II) adsorption in ball mill sulfhydryl modified biochars of 300, 500, and 700 °C were 401.8, 379.6 and 270.6 mg/g, respectively; simultaneously, the maximum adsorption capacity of MeHg was 108.16, 85.27 and 39.14 mg/g, respectively, which showed preferential increasing of 5.54 times on MeHg compared to the non-thiol modified biochar at low pyrolysis temperature of 300 °C. Results of kinetic adsorption experiments suggested that sorption data fitted well with Pseudo-second-order kinetic model, which proved that the mainly rate-limiting adsorption step was surface diffusion. Langmuir isotherm model fitting result showed that ligand exchange, surface complexation, surface adsorption and electrostatic attraction are dominant removal mechanisms. The 3-MPTS content and ball milling time are crucial during ball milling, and 2% 3-MPTS and 30 h of ball milling were found to be the most suitable conditions for both Hg(II) and MeHg adsorption. The result suggests that ball milling aided thiol-modification has great potential in synthesis of -SH modified biochar with prioritized MeHg adsorption.

Heavy metal removal by biomass-derived carbon nanotubes as a greener environmental remediation: A comprehensive review

The concentrations of heavy metal ions found in waterways near industrial zones are often exceed the prescribed limits, posing a continued danger to the environment and public health. Therefore, greater attention has been devoted into finding the efficient solutions for adsorbing heavy metal ions. This review paper focuses on the synthesis of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) from biomass and their application in the removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions. Techniques to produce CNTs, benefits of modification with various functional groups to enhance sorption uptake, effects of operating parameters, and adsorption mechanisms are reviewed. Adsorption occurs via physical adsorption, electrostatic interaction, surface complexation, and interaction between functional groups and heavy metal ions. Moreover, factors such as pH level, CNTs dosage, duration, temperature, ionic strength, and surface property of adsorbents have been identified as the common factors influencing the adsorption of heavy metals. The oxygenated functional groups initially present on the surface of the modified CNTs are responsible towards the adsorption enhancement of commonly-encountered heavy metals such as Pb²⁺, Cu²⁺, Cd²⁺, Co²⁺, Zn²⁺, Ni²⁺, Hg²⁺, and Cr⁶⁺. Despite the recent advances in the application of CNTs in environmental clean-up and pollution treatment have been demonstrated, major obstacles of CNTs such as high synthesis cost, the agglomeration in the post-treated solutions and the secondary pollution from chemicals in the surface modification, should be critically addressed in the future studies for successful large-scale applications of CNTs.

Biochar-Assisted Phytostabilization for Potentially Toxic Element Immobilization

In response to the growing threat to the quality of the soil environment, new technologies are being developed to protect and remediate contaminated sites. A new approach, namely, assisted phytostabilization, has been used in areas contaminated with high levels of potentially toxic elements (PTEs), using various soil additives. This paper determined the effectiveness of biochar-assisted phytostabilization using Dactylis glomerata L. of soil contaminated with high concentrations of the selected PTEs (in mg/kg soil): Cu (780 ± 144), Cd (25.9 ± 2.5), Pb (13,540 ± 669) and Zn (8433 ± 1376). The content of the selected PTEs in the roots and above-ground parts of the tested grass, and in the soil, was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). The addition of biochar to the contaminated soil led to an increase in plant biomass and caused an increase in soil pH values. Concentrations of Cu, Cd, Pb and Zn were higher in the roots than in the above-ground parts of Dactylis glomerata L. The application of biochar significantly reduced the total content of PTEs in the soil after finishing the phytostabilization experiment, as well as reducing the content of bioavailable forms extracted from the soil using CaCl2 solution, which was clearly visible with respect to Cd and Pb. It is concluded that the use of biochar in supporting the processes of assisted phytostabilization of soils contaminated with PTEs is justified.

Application of biochar in advanced oxidation processes: supportive, adsorptive, and catalytic role

The advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), especially sulphate radical (SO₄^•-)-based AOPs (SR-AOPs), have been considered more effective, selective, and prominent technologies for the removal of highly toxic emerging contaminants (ECs) due to wide operational pH range and relatively higher oxidation potential (2.5-3.1 V). Recently, biochar (BC)-based composite materials have been introduced in AOPs due to the dual benefits of adsorption and catalytic degradation, but the scientific review of BC-based catalysts for the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROSs) through radical- and non-radical-oriented routes for EC removal was rarely reported. The chemical treatments, such as acid/base treatment, chemical oxidation, surfactant incorporation, and coating and impregnation of minerals, were applied to make BC suitable as supporting materials (SMs) for the loading of Fenton catalysts to boost up peroxymonosulphate/persulphate/H₂O₂ activation to get ROSs including ^•OH, SO₄^•-, ¹O₂, and O₂^•- for targeted pollutant degradation. In this review, all the possible merits of BC-based catalysts including supportive, adsorptive, and catalytic role are summarised along with the possible route for the development prospects of BC properties. The limitations of SR-AOPs especially on production of non-desired oxyanions, as well as disinfection intermediates and their potential solutions, have been identified. Lastly, the knowledge gap and future-oriented research needs are highlighted.

Health Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals Accumulated on PM2.5 Fractioned Road Dust from Two Cities of Pakistan

The aim of this study is to identify and investigate levels of toxic heavy metals in PM2.5 fractioned road dust to better understand the associated inhalation risk and potential health impacts. To achieve this aim, concentrations of seven traffic generated heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Ni, Sb, and Cr) were determined in the PM2.5 fraction of road dust samples from four different locations (offices, residential, hospital, and school) in two cities (Karachi and Shikarpur) of Pakistan using ICP-MS. The average concentration values of heavy metals in Karachi were as follows: 332.9 mg/kg Cu, 426.6 mg/kg Pb, 4254.4 mg/kg Zn, 62.3 mg/kg Cd, 389.7 mg/kg Ni, 70.4 mg/kg Sb, 148.1 mg/kg Cr, whereas the average concentration values of heavy metals in Shikarpur were 245.8 mg/kg Cu, 538.4 mg/kg Pb, 8351.0 mg/kg Zn, 57.6 mg/kg Cd, 131.7 mg/kg Ni, 314.5 mg/kg Sb, 346.6 mg/kg Cr. The pollution level was assessed through two pollution indices enrichment factor (EF) and geoaccumulation index (Igeo). These indices showed moderate to extreme level pollution in studied areas of both cities. The health risk assessment through inhalation contact was conducted according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency's (USEPA) model for children and adults. Both non-cancerous and cancerous risks were characterised in the road dust samples for each location. As yet, there is not a single study on the concentrations of heavy metals in PM2.5 fractions of road dust in Karachi and Shikarpur, findings of this research will facilitate researchers for further investigations in current field.

Remediation of mercury contaminated soil, water, and air: A review of emerging materials and innovative technologies

Mercury contamination in soil, water and air is associated with potential toxicity to humans and ecosystems. Industrial activities such as coal combustion have led to increased mercury (Hg) concentrations in different environmental media. This review critically evaluates recent developments in technological approaches for the remediation of Hg contaminated soil, water and air, with a focus on emerging materials and innovative technologies. Extensive research on various nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), nanosheets and magnetic nanocomposites, for mercury removal are investigated. This paper also examines other emerging materials and their characteristics, including graphene, biochar, metal organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), layered double hydroxides (LDHs) as well as other materials such as clay minerals and manganese oxides. Based on approaches including adsorption/desorption, oxidation/reduction and stabilization/containment, the performances of innovative technologies with the aid of these materials were examined. In addition, technologies involving organisms, such as phytoremediation, algae-based mercury removal, microbial reduction and constructed wetlands, were also reviewed, and the role of organisms, especially microorganisms, in these techniques are illustrated.
