Film based on magnesium impregnated biochar/cellulose acetate for phosphorus adsorption from aqueous solution

Antimicrobial, antioxidant and cytocompatible coaxial wet-spun fibers made of polycaprolactone and cellulose acetate loaded with essential oils for wound care

Chronic wounds represent a serious worldwide concern, being often associated with bacterial infections. As the prevalence of bacterial infections increase, it is crucial to search for alternatives. Essential oils (EOs) constitute a promising option to antibiotics due to their strong anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antioxidant and antibacterial properties. However, such compounds present high volatility. To address this issue, a drug delivery system composed of coaxial wet-spun fibers was engineered and different EOs, namely clove oil (CO), cinnamon leaf oil (CLO) and tea tree oil (TTO), were loaded. Briefly, a coaxial system composed of two syringe pumps, a coagulation bath of deionized water, a cylindrical-shaped collector and a coaxial spinneret was used. A 10 % w/v polycaprolactone (PCL) solution was combined with the different EOs at 2 × minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) and loaded to a syringe connected to the inner port, whereas a 10 % w/v cellulose acetate (CA) solution mixed with 10 % w/v polyethylene glycol (PEG) at a ratio of 90:10 % v/v (to increase the fibers' elasticity) was loaded to the syringe connected to the outer port. This layer was used as a barrier to pace the release of the entrapped EO. The CA's inherent porosity in water coagulation baths allowed access to the fiber's core. CA was also mixed with 10 % w/v polyethylene glycol (PEG) at a ratio of 90:10 % v/v (CA:PEG), to increase the fibers' elasticity. Microfibers maintained their structural integrity during 28 days of incubation in physiological-like environments. They also showed high elasticities (maximum elongations at break >300 %) and resistance to rupture in mechanical assessments, reaching mass losses of only ≈ 2.29 % - 57.19 %. The EOs were released from the fibers in a prolonged and sustained fashion, in which ≈ 30 % of EO was released during the 24 h of incubation in physiological-like media, demonstrating great antibacterial effectiveness against Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the most prevalent bacteria in chronic wounds. Moreover, microfibers showed effective antioxidant effects, presenting up to 59 % of reduction of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) activity. Furthermore, the coaxial system was deemed safe for contact with fibroblasts and human keratinocytes, reaching metabolic activities higher than 80 % after 48 h of incubation. Data confirmed the suitability of the engineered system for potential therapeutics of chronic wounds.

Cellulose Acetate Microparticles Synthesized from Agave sisalana Perrine for Controlled Release of Simvastatin

Simvastatin (SIM) is widely prescribed to treat hyperlipidemia, despite its limitations, such as a short half-life and low oral bioavailability. To overcome these drawbacks, the development of a controlled-release formulation is desirable. This study aims to develop a microparticulate system based on cellulose acetate (ACT) obtained from Agave sisalana Perrine to promote a controlled SIM release. SIM-loaded microparticles (SMP) were prepared using the solvent emulsification-evaporation method. Several parameters were evaluated, including particle size, surface charge, morphology, encapsulation efficiency, thermochemical characteristics, crystallinity, and in vitro release profile. ACT exhibited favorable flow properties after acetylation, with a degree of substitution values superior to 2.5, as confirmed by both the chemical route and H-NMR, indicating the formation of cellulose triacetate. The obtained SMP were spherical with an average size ranging from 1842 to 1857 nm, a zeta potential of -4.45 mV, and a high SIM incorporation efficiency (98%). Thermal and XRD analyses revealed that SIM was homogeneously dispersed into the polymeric matrix in its amorphous state. In vitro studies using dialysis bags revealed that the controlled SIM release from microparticles was higher under simulated intestinal conditions and followed the Higuchi kinetic model. Our results suggest that ACT-based microparticles are a promising system for SIM delivery, which can improve its bioavailability, and result in better patient compliance.

Irreversible colorimetric bio-based curcumin bilayer membranes for smart food packaging temperature control applications

Research into innovative food safety technologies has led to the development of smart packaging with embedded chemical sensors that can monitor food quality throughout the supply chain. Thermochromic materials (TM), which are able to dynamically change colour in response to temperature fluctuations, have proven to be reliable indicators of food quality in certain environments. Natural colourants such as curcumin are becoming increasingly popular for smart packaging due to their low toxicity, environmental friendliness and ability to change colour. The innovation in this research lies in the production of a bio-based bilayer membrane specifically designed for irreversible temperature monitoring. Membrane A was prepared by dissolving cellulose acetate and curcumin in acetone at room temperature, with glycerol serving as a plasticiser. At the same time, membrane B was carefully formulated by dissolving cellulose acetate and triethanolamine in acetone, with sorbitol as plasticiser. The preparation of these different membranes revealed a remarkable event: a gradual and irreversible colour transition from an initial yellow to a brick-red hue after 24 hours of storage at 25 °C. The chemical structure and morphological analyses of the membranes were performed using several techniques, including FTIR, DSC and SEM. The membrane labels were adhered to aluminium cans and their colorimetric response was observed over a period of 10 days. Minimal colour variations were observed, confirming the reproducibility and stability of the curcumin-based membranes as temperature sensors.

Porous microneedle arrays as promising tools for the quantification of drugs in the skin: a proof of concept study

This study aimed to demonstrate the potential of using porous microneedles (PMNs) as a promising tool for the noninvasive quantification of topically applied pharmaceutical products. We fabricated a porous microneedle (PMN) from a blend of cellulose acetate and dimethyl sulfoxide by casting and phase separation; it was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and a Texture Analyzer. An ex vivo study was conducted as a proof-of-concept study to assess whether this PMN could be used to quantify drug absorption through the skin after the topical administration of two nonequivalent products of sodium ibuprofen (gel and dissolving microneedles). Three cellulose acetate formulations (PMN1: 37.5%, PMN-2: 44.4%, and PMN-3: 50%) were used to prepare PMN patches; subsequently, these were evaluated for their morphological and insertion properties. Only PMN-2 microneedle patches were chosen to continue with the ex vivo study. The ex vivo study results demonstrated that PMNs could absorb and release sodium ibuprofen (SDIB) and differentiate between two different SDIB topical products. This can be attributed to the porous and interconnected architecture of these microneedles. This developmental study highlights the potential success of such a tool for the quantification of dermal drug concentration and supports moving to in vivo tests.

Covalent immobilization of human serum albumin on cellulose acetate membrane for scavenging amyloid beta - A stepping extracorporeal strategy for ameliorating Alzheimer's disease

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by interrupted neurocognitive functions and impaired mental development presumably caused by the accumulation of amyloid beta (Aβ) in the form of plaques. Targeting Aβ has been considered a promising approach for treating AD. In the current study, human serum albumin (HSA), a natural Aβ binder, is covalently immobilized onto the surface of a cellulose acetate (CA) membrane to devise an extracorporeal Aβ sequester. The immobilization of HSA at 3.06 ± 0.22 μg/mm2 of the CA membrane was found to be active functionally, as evidenced by the esterase-like activity converting p-nitrophenyl acetate into p-nitrophenol. The green fluorescent protein-Aβ (GFP-Aβ) fusion protein, recombinantly produced as a model ligand, exhibited characteristics of native Aβ. These features include the propensity to form aggregates or fibrils and an affinity for HSA with a dissociation constant (KD) of 0.91 μM. The HSA on the CA membrane showed concentration-dependent sequestration of GFP-Aβ in the 1-10-μM range. Moreover, it had a greater binding capacity than HSA immobilized on a commercial amine-binding plate. Results suggest that the covalent immobilization of HSA on the CA surface can be used as a potential platform for sequestering Aβ to alleviate AD.

Synergistic approach for synthesis of functionalized biochar for efficient adsorption of Lopinavir from polluted water

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a significant increase in antibiotic consumption, along with a 70% rise in antiviral drug concentrations in aquatic ecosystems. For the effective adsorption of antibiotics, biochar was modified by incorporating layered double hydroxide (LDH) through hydrothermal method. The results showed that LDH provides additional hydroxyl groups, positive surface charges and ion exchange. Whereas biochar component provides a larger specific surface area (467.8 m2/g). Batch adsorption experiments of biochar @ layered double hydroxide (BC@LDH) showed enhanced adsorption performance (832.9 mg/g), compared to pristine LDH (420.3 mg/g) and unmodified biochar (548.5 mg/g). Adsorption data were best interpreted (R2 = 0.99) by pseudo second order, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models. Adsorption was a synergism of LDH and biochar physiochemical properties, whereas pore-filling was the primary mechanism. The recyclability of BC@LDH confirmed its good structural stability. This study introduces a sustainable and efficient method for synthesizing a versatile adsorbent with superior antibiotic removal.

Synthesis & fabrication of O-linked polymeric hybrids for recovery of textile dyes: Closed loop economy

Dyes are an important resource employed for the production systems in textile, paper, paint and leather industry. An estimate of 200,000 tons of dyes are discharged as textile effluent each year worldwide. It becomes imperative to recover these dyes by treating the effluents using economically viable routes. The present research was undertaken with the objective to attain zero emission and zero waste through development of novel polymeric hybrids as adsorbents. For this purpose, metal moieties (Al3+, Si4+, Ti4+ and Zr4+) were hybridized with polyacrylic acid, and cellulose acetate for the uptake of selected dyes under optimized parameters. The structural elucidation of four synthesized hybrids (MP-Al, MP-Si, MP-Ti and MP-Zr) by FTIR, EDX and TGA confirmed O-linked grafting of metal moieties with polymers and thermally stable porous materials. SEM micrographic images displayed void spaces providing channels for effective adsorption. The batch experiments demonstrated removal of malachite green (77-96%) and congo red (70-82%) upon contact of initial 45 min on polymeric hybrids On the other hand, pristine polyacrylic acid and cellulose acetate showed remarkably low removal of dyes. The adsorption mechanism is proposed as physical in nature following type II isotherm. Further, Langmuir and Ho's pseudo second order fitness was evaluated. In order to determine the economic viability of the present research, the real textile dyes were recovered in three consecutive cycles of adsorption and chemical treatment of hybrids. The results propose a system with positive impact on economy by maximum utilization of hybrids as adsorbents and recovery of textile dyes for reuse in textile processing.

Petroleum Coke Embedded in Cigarette Butts: All Waste-Derived Solar Evaporator for Effective Water Evaporation

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation is an eco-friendly solution for tackling the impending water scarcity the world is facing in our century. In this work, a solar-driven interfacial evaporator was prepared from cigarette butts loaded with petroleum coke powder (Filter-PetCoke), a by-product of the oil refinery processes, for the improvement of the absorption of the incident solar light. A comparison between a flat 2D and a 3D evaporator with a surface composed of orderly patterned protrusions of 2.1 cm was carried out to assess the influence of the evaporator configuration on the evaporation performance. The 3D evaporator (3D Filter-PetCoke) achieved by far the best performance (evaporation rate: 1.97 ± 0.08 kg m-2 h-1 and solar conversion efficiency: 93.2 ± 5.4%) among the prepared samples (3D Filter-PetCoke, 3D Filter, 2D Filter-PetCoke, and 2D Filter). In addition, this configuration seems to be adaptable for real and more massive operation because of the geometry of the evaporator. The high efficiency was ascribed to the good heat generation of the petroleum coke and the excellent heat management of the 3D structure of the evaporator. Moreover, this evaporator was resistant to multiple repeated usages without significant efficiency loss and capable of producing drinking water from seawater and Escherichia coli (E. coli)-contaminated water. The findings in this work indicate that this evaporator is pertinent to real situations to supply safe freshwater very efficiently from chemically/biologically contaminated water.

Magnesium Ortho-Vanadate/Magnesium Oxide/Graphene Oxide Embedded through Cellulose Acetate-Based Films for Wound Healing Applications

A multifunctional nano-films of cellulose acetate (CA)/magnesium ortho-vanadate (MOV)/magnesium oxide/graphene oxide wound coverage was fabricated. Through fabrication, different weights of the previously mentioned ingredients were selected to receive a certain morphological appearance. The composition was confirmed by XRD, FTIR, and EDX techniques. SEM micrograph of Mg₃(VO₄)₂/MgO/GO@CA film depicted that there was a porous surface with flattened rounded MgO grains with an average size of 0.31 µm was observed. Regarding wettability, the binary composition of Mg₃(VO₄)₂@CA occupied the lowest contact angle of 30.15 ± 0.8^o, while pure CA represents the highest one at 47.35 ± 0.4°. The cell viability % amongst the usage of 4.9 µg/mL of Mg₃(VO₄)₂/MgO/GO@CA is 95.77 ± 3.2%, while 2.4 µg/mL showed 101.54 ± 2.9%. The higher concentration of 5000 µg/mL exhibited a viability of 19.23%. According to optical results, the refractive index jumped from 1.73 for CA to 1.81 for Mg₃(VO₄)₂/MgO/GO@CA film. The thermogravimetric analysis showed three main stages of degradation. The initial temperature started from room temperature to 289 °C with a weight loss of 13%. On the other hand, the second stage started from the final temperature of the first stage and end at 375 °C with a weight loss of 52%. Finally, the last stage was from 375 to 472 °C with 19% weight loss. The obtained results, such as high hydrophilic behavior, high cell viability, surface roughness, and porosity due to the addition of nanoparticles to the CA membrane, all played a significant role in enhancing the biocompatibility and biological activity of the CA membrane. The enhancements in the CA membrane suggest that it can be utilized in drug delivery and wound healing applications.

Construction of efficient Ni-FeLDH@MWCNT@Cellulose acetate floatable microbeads for Cr(VI) removal: Performance and mechanism

Water pollution is an aggravating dilemma that is extending around the world, threatening human survival. Strikingly, the notorious heavy metals like hexavalent chromium ions (Cr⁶⁺) cause environmental problems raising awareness of the essentials for finding feasible solutions. For this purpose, the self-floating Ni-FeLDH@MWCNT@CA microbeads were prepared for removing Cr⁶⁺. The morphological, thermal, and composition characteristics of Ni-FeLDH@MWCNT@CA microbeads were analyzed using XRD, FTIR, TGA, SEM, XPS, and zeta potential. Notably, the adsorption aptitude of Cr⁶⁺ was enhanced by raising the MWCNTs proportion to 5 wt% in microbeads. The Cr⁶⁺ adsorption onto Ni-FeLDH@MWCNT@CA fitted Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models with q_m of 384.62 mg/g at pH 3 and 298 K. The adsorption process was described kinetically by the pseudo-2nd order model. More importantly, the adsorption of Cr⁶⁺ onto Ni-FeLDH@MWCNT@CA occurred via electrostatic interactions, inner/outer sphere complexations, ion exchange, and reduction mechanisms. Besides, the cycling test showed the remarkable reusability of Ni-FeLDH@MWCNT@CA floatable microbeads for five subsequent cycles. The self-floating Ni-FeLDH@MWCNT@CA microbeads in this work provide essential support for the potential applications for the remediation of heavy metals-containing wastewater.

Titanium Dioxide/Chromium Oxide/Graphene Oxide Doped into Cellulose Acetate for Medical Applications

Wound dressings have been designed based on cellulose acetate encapsulated with different concentrations of chromium oxide (Cr₂O₃) and titanium oxide (TiO₂) with/without graphene oxide (GO). This study comprises the structural, morphological, optical, thermal, and biological behavior of chromium oxide/titanium dioxide/graphene oxide-integrated cellulose acetate (CA) films. The CA-based film bond formation was introduced by functional group analysis via Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The fabricated Cr₂O₃/TiO₂/GO@CA film SEM micrographs demonstrate transition metal oxides Cr₂O₃ and TiO₂ on a nano-scale. The TiO₂@CA shows the lowest contact angle with 30°. Optically, the refractive index increases from 1.76 for CA to 2.14 for the TiO₂@CA film. Moreover, normal lung cells (A138) growth examination in a function of Cr₂O₃/TiO₂/GO@CA film concentration is conducted, introducing 93.46% with the usage of 4.9 µg/mL. The resulting data showed a promising wound-healing behavior of the CA-based films.

Cellulose Acetate Film Containing Bonechar for Removal of Metribuzin from Contaminated Drinking Water

Bonechar presents high sorption capacity for mobile herbicides retained in soil and water. However, its use in a granulated and/or powder form makes it difficult to remove water. The objective of this study was to produce a cellulose acetate film with bonechar as a viable alternative to remove metribuzin from water. The treatments were composed of 2 and 3 g of bonechar fixed on a cellulose acetate film, pure bonechar, and a control (no bonechar). The sorption and desorption study was carried out in the equilibrium batch mode with five concentrations of metribuzin (0.25, 0.33, 0.5, 1, and 2 mg L−1). The water used in the experiment was potable water. Herbicide analysis was performed by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The addition of 2 and 3 g of the bonechar fixed on the acetate film sorbed 40% and 60%, respectively, of the metribuzin at the lowest concentrations (0.25, 0.33, and 0.5 mg L−1). For both additions, desorption was low, being 7% and 2.5% at 24 and 120 h, respectively. There are still no reports of the production of cellulose acetate film with bonechar for herbicide removal in water, considered an alternative of easy handling and indicated for water treatment plants.

From Hazardous Waste to Green Applications: Selective Surface Functionalization of Waste Cigarette Filters for High-Performance Robust Triboelectric Nanogenerators and CO2 Adsorbents

This article reports a novel and rational approach to convert waste cigarette filters (CFs), one of the largest sources of ocean pollution, into high-performance triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) and efficient CO₂-capturing adsorbents. CFs are plasticized cellulose acetate, which take several years to degrade. To revalorize these fibers, selective amine surface functionalization is performed (10PAL-20T-CFs). For the proof of concept, when the modified fibers are employed in a TENG, it could generate an output voltage (96.63 V) and current (9.37 μA) that are, respectively, 43 and 8 times higher than those obtained employing the pristine CFs for the nanogenerator. The proposed TENG displays an instantaneous peak power of 3.75 mW, which is higher than that of many recently reported TENGs made from cellulose materials. Moreover, the TENG displayed outstanding durability to humidity and high-performance stability when it is subjected to cyclic loading (i.e., 12,000 cycles of loading-unloading). A 9 cm² TENG could effectively light up 100 or more colored light-emitting diodes when it is manually pressed. Finally, the modified filter fibers show an excellent CO₂ adsorption capacity of 1.93 mmol/g, which is 9.2 times higher than that obtained using the pristine fibers. These results demonstrate that hazardous wastes such as CFs can be upcycled into valuable resources.

Acetic acid-mediated cellulose-based carbons: Influence of activation conditions on textural features and carbon dioxide uptakes

In this work, we developed a simple methodology for producing highly porous carbons. Herein, we combined the hydrothermal method with chemical activation to fabricate cellulose-based, melamine modified porous carbons, using acetic acid as an additive. The preparation conditions including activation temperature, activation time, and melamine ratio were varied to obtain an optimized adsorbent exhibiting efficient textural features and maximized carbon dioxide (CO₂) adsorption uptake. By varying the preparation conditions, high specific surface area (SSA) (1260-3019 m² g^-1), microporosity in the range of 0.21-1.13 cm³ g^-1, and a well-developed porous structure was obtained. The optimized adsorbent exhibits an excellent CO₂ adsorption uptake of 297.05 mg g^-1 (6.75 mmol g^-1) and 174.4 mg g^-1 (3.96 mmol g^-1) at 273 K and 298 K at 1 bar, respectively, due to the existence of ultra-micropores (<0.68 nm, < 0.81 nm), high SSA (3019 m² g^-1), and high nitrogen content (8%). Furthermore, the role of micropores in the CO₂ adsorption process suggests that micropores between 0.68 nm and 1 nm exhibit high CO₂ adsorption potential. Additionally, all synthesized carbons exhibited a high isosteric heat of adsorption (45 kJ mol^-1) and a greater affinity for adsorbed CO₂ species than nitrogen (N₂) molecules. Thus, as-fabricated porous carbon adsorbents are an effective competitor for CO₂ uptake applications to mitigate global warming.

Waste cigarette filter as nanofibrous membranes for on-demand immiscible oil/water mixtures and emulsions separation

The rapid industrial growth and the frequent oil spill accidents have led to the large production of oily wastewater. Thus, it is urging to develop a low-cost and eco-friendly material to purify the oily wastewater. In our work, the waste cigarette filter as the raw material was used to prepare cigarette filter coated meshes (CFCMs) by a facile electrospinning approach. The as-prepared CFCMs prewetted with water or oil achieved the special wetting performance of underwater superoleophobicity or underoil superhydrophobicity without any further chemical modification. Hence, the cigarette filter coated meshes with larger or smaller pore size can be applied to on-demand immiscible oil/water mixtures (light or heavy oil/water mixtures) and oil/water emulsions separation (water-in-oil or oil-in-water emulsions), respectively. Moreover, the CFCMs still exhibited high separation efficiency larger than 99.9% for immiscible oil/water mixtures and emulsions after many cyclic testing. The work provides an application in oil/water separation for waste cigarette filters and contributes to reduce the pollution for environment from the waste cigarette filters.
